LIFESTYLE LETTER

Letter From the Editor

November 2026 PUBLISHER

November slows us down and makes us take stock. The year's pace begins to soften. The calendar fills with gatherings, familiar recipes make their annual appearance, and we start thinking a little more intentionally about the people and places that make our lives feel full. That’s what I love about Thanksgiving. Beneath all the food, football, and family traditions, there’s a simple invitation: notice what you have. Here in West Cobb, there is plenty to notice. There are the local businesses we return to year after year, the parks and trails where we spend Saturday mornings, the restaurants where celebrations become traditions, and the community events that give us a chance to run into neighbors we might otherwise never see. There are the farmers, makers, artists, volunteers, and educators who contribute something of themselves to the place we call home. Most importantly, there are the people. As I’ve worked on this issue, I’ve found myself thinking about how much of our everyday lives are tied to this community. The places we grab coffee, the streets we drive down every day, the friends we meet for dinner, the local businesses whose owners recognize us when we walk through the door. These seemingly ordinary things become part of our life story. This month, we’re celebrating some of those things. Inside this issue, you’ll find inspiration for gathering around your own Thanksgiving table, ideas for incorporating local flavor into your holiday celebrations, and a look at some of the Cobb County places we’re especially grateful to have in our backyard. We’re also celebrating the people, businesses, and traditions that make this community worth calling home. Wherever your Thanksgiving takes you this year, I hope you’ll take a moment to look around the table and beyond it. Think about the people who showed up for you this year. The places that gave you good memories. The small businesses you’re glad are here. The traditions you hope to carry forward. Those are the things that make a community, and those are the things worth being thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving, West Cobb. Warmly,

GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up

Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our nonprofit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

12

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.

We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.

“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.

Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.

This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.

Thankful for Healthy Legs

This Season, Give Thanks for the Steps That Carry You Through Life This season is a time to reflect on the things we’re most thankful for; family, friends, good health, and the moments that keep us moving. But when was the last time you were thankful for your legs? Your legs carry you through busy days, family gatherings, holiday traditions, and everything in between. If aching, heaviness, swelling, varicose veins, or tired legs are slowing you down, they may be signs of underlying vein disease. At Truffles Vein Specialists, we’re thankful for the opportunity to help our patients feel better, move more comfortably, and get back to enjoying the moments that matter most.

This November, take care of the legs that carry you through life. Free vein screenings

Kylie Hardy, Cobb County School District’s 2026–27 Teacher of the Year, was honored with a handprint ceremony at Marietta Square, joining a permanent tribute to outstanding educators. The Mableton Elementary School English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher credited the teachers, mentors and colleagues who helped shape her career. “It just reminds me of the responsibility and the honor and the privilege of being in this position,” Hardy says. Mableton’s student singers, the Mabletones, performed in English and Spanish. For Hardy, the performance highlighted the progress of students who, just a few years ago, knew no English. “Being able to use your voice is such a big part of what I do with the kids,” she says. As Cobb’s Teacher of the Year, Hardy hopes to advocate for fellow educators and remind them to celebrate everyday progress, from a student gaining confidence to a lesson finally clicking.

“Just look for the small things, look for the little wins, because any type of progress is something to celebrate,” Hardy says. “The work that we are doing matters.” Cobb County’s Teacher of the Year is leaving a lasting impression on Marietta Square and in her classroom. Mableton Elementary teacher Kylie Hardy’s handprints now join a permanent tribute to outstanding educators in Cobb County. Hardy’s students learn English and find the confidence to use their voices. Her students celebrated her during the ceremony with songs in English and Spanish. For Hardy, the honor also belongs to the teachers and colleagues who helped her along the way. “Today as I place my handprints on the Teacher Walk of Honor, I’m reminded that I didn’t get here alone. Today’s handprints may be mine, but they represent so much more than me. The greatest feeling we can give someone is the CONTINUED >

feeling that they matter, that they belong, that they have a place in this world and someone is willing and able to see them.” Hardy is also continuing her education through Georgia’s BEST. Cobb’s partnership with the University of West Georgia covers tuition for selected educators pursuing advanced degrees, with a three-year commitment to stay in the district. Cobb Schools bestowed this honor after naming her, Ebony Collier, and Lisa Peacock its 2026-2027 District Teachers of the Year, recognizing three outstanding educators whose unique paths to the classroom have transformed students' lives across the district. Superintendent Chris Ragsdale, district leaders, family members, and colleagues surprised the three educators at their schools during special recognition celebrations. While each teacher's journey is different, they share a common commitment to helping every student succeed.

Ebony Collier, a fine arts teacher at Tapp Middle School, has expanded opportunities for students by building a thriving theater program at her school. Her work encourages students to build confidence, express themselves through the arts, and dream beyond the classroom. Lisa Peacock, a biology teacher at Osborne High School, spent more than three decades mentoring and tutoring children before entering the public-school classroom. Her hands-on, innovative teaching style inspires curiosity while creating a classroom where students feel safe, supported, and engaged. "This recognition reflects the incredible impact these educators have on students every day,” said Ragsdale. "Whether through the arts, language acquisition, or science, Ebony, Kylie, and Lisa exemplify the passion, innovation, and commitment that define excellence in Cobb Schools."

Your ultimate guide to the perfect game gathering this holiday season ARTICLE BY BETH DEL VILLE ’Tis the season for get-togethers with family and friends. Kids are home from school, friends and family are visiting for the holidays, and neighbors are especially, well, neighborly! In the whirlwind of holiday to-dos and festive planning, it’s easy to get lost in the chaos. This year, take a moment to carve out some time for a little fun! With screens and social media dominating our attention, a nostalgic, simple and joyful game night sets the scene for laughter, friendly competition and making memories with those you love. Check out our guide to creating the best game night ever.

The Guest List

: Game nights might just be the perfect party; they’re great for everyone from toddlers to grandparents. And games can be the great equalizer while bringing everyone together. The sweet spot for your game night’s guest size should be manageable but large enough to be lively (somewhere between 6 to 10 people).

Setting the Scene

: Clear away the clutter to make space for games and guests. Assemble a comfortable seating area with cozy blankets, cushy poufs and floor pillows to encourage everyone to relax and stay a while. Curate a fun and upbeat playlist to have in the background - just loud enough to create the perfect party ambiance. Indie folk or smooth jazz can keep the energy up without distracting from gameplay. Set up a variety of lighting from string lights to candles to craft a magical mood, ensuring the space feels inviting.

Snack Attack: Keep the rivalry friendly by ensuring your guests are satiated. Set up a popcorn bar, a low-effort but high-impact snack station! Stock up on individual popcorn boxes so your guests can create their own snack sensations. You can rent an old-fashioned popcorn machine for a fun, nostalgic touch or simply provide a large bowl of freshly popped corn. Then, arrange your toppings. Think butter or olive oil, a variety of seasonings from traditional salt to nutritional yeast, sweet candies for that salty-sweet combination, melted chocolate and caramel sauce, and more.

A FAMILY A FAMILY TRADITION TRADITION SINCE SINCE 1930 1930

The Games: The best strategy for selecting games is to have a variety at the ready. For large, loud and energetic play, think group party games like Codenames and Wavelength. For smaller, more thoughtful groups, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne and other strategy games may be the way to go. You can’t go wrong with timeless staples such as Pictionary, Scrabble or a deck of cards. Or take game night outdoors and prepare for a spirited contest with classic outdoor games like ladder toss and cornhole.

No matter who wins the game, we all know the real win is spending time with your loved ones.

CREATING A THANKSGIVING TABLE WITH COBB COUNTY FINDS

This year, give your Thanksgiving table a local touch by bringing together seasonal Georgia ingredients, farmers' market finds, natural elements, and handmade details from Cobb County. The result is a warm, welcoming tablescape that feels collected rather than store-bought, and a celebration that supports the local growers, makers, and small businesses that make our community special.

1. START WITH A LOCALLY INSPIRED COLOR PALETTE

Think beyond the traditional orange-and-black Thanksgiving palette. Take inspiration from a Georgia autumn, using muted terracotta, warm cream, deep burgundy, olive green, and the golden hues of late-season foliage. Build your foundation with what you already own: a neutral tablecloth, linen runners, everyday dinnerware, or simple cloth napkins. Then add seasonal color through produce, flowers, and natural textures instead of buying an entirely new set of decorations. Look for miniature pumpkins, gourds, dried corn, and seasonal foliage at farm stands and markets.

2. MAKE THE CENTERPIECE FROM THINGS YOU CAN EAT

Some of the most interesting arrangements use seasonal produce, clipped greenery, and a few pieces you can reuse after the holiday. Try this simple formula: • Choose a focal point. Use two or three miniature pumpkins or a larger heirloom pumpkin as the anchor. • Add Georgia-grown or regionally sourced produce. Look for pecans, apples, pears, persimmons, and other fall fruits available from local vendors. • Introduce greenery. Add locally purchased foliage or clippings from your own garden, such as magnolia leaves, rosemary, or other suitable branches. • Finish with candlelight. Use low candleholders or battery-operated candles to create a soft glow without crowding the table. For a more organic look, arrange everything down the center of the table instead of building one tall bouquet. Vary the heights and let some elements overlap naturally. CONTINUED >

3. SHOP COBB COUNTY FOR THE INGREDIENTS AND FLORALS

The secret to creating a locally inspired table is to shop with a plan and stay flexible enough to use what looks beautiful that week. Marietta Square Farmers Market 41 Mill Street, Marietta Make this your first stop for seasonal produce, baked goods, specialty foods, and other market finds. The adjacent Marietta Square Artisan Market is another place to look for handmade accents. Farmer John's Produce 3810 Due West Road, Marietta A neighborhood produce stop to explore for seasonal fruits, vegetables, and fall decorations. Ask which items are locally grown and what is available for Thanksgiving.

4. PUT GEORGIA FLAVORS ON THE TABLE

A local Thanksgiving table should look inviting, but it should taste like Georgia, too. Incorporate regional ingredients into the menu, and use a few in the presentation. Georgia pecans Fill a small wooden bowl with pecans for guests to snack on before dinner, or serve a pecan pie from a local bakery. They add natural texture to the table and are a recognizable Southern staple. Sweet potatoes and fall vegetables Serve roasted sweet potatoes, winter squash, or other seasonal vegetables on a handmade-looking ceramic platter. Locally baked bread Pick up cornbread, sourdough, biscuits, or a crusty loaf from a local baker. Present it in a lined basket or on a wooden board for a relaxed, family-style feel. Local honey and seasonal fruit Use a jar of locally produced honey as part of a small serving station, or pair apples and pears with a cheese board. These also make easy take-home gifts for guests.

5. SET EACH PLACE WITH THOUGHTFUL, HANDMADE DETAILS

You don't need matching dinnerware to create a cohesive table. Mixing pieces you already own with a few handmade or locally sourced additions can make the setting feel more personal. Here are three easy details to try: • Handwritten place cards: Write each guest's name on kraft paper, a small piece of cardstock, or a fallen leaf that has been cleaned and dried. • Herb-tied napkins: Fold a linen or cotton napkin and secure it with twine and a sprig of rosemary. Use culinary herbs from your own garden or a local seller. • A gratitude note: Place a small card at each setting asking guests to share something they're thankful for this year. Collect the cards in a bowl after dinner or invite everyone to read theirs aloud. For handmade serving pieces, browse the Marietta Square Artisan Market or local makers for pottery, wooden boards, and other pieces you can bring out for holidays to come. A memorable Thanksgiving table isn't about perfection, following trends, or how much you spend. It's about celebrating the place you call home, from the food grown in Georgia to the small businesses and makers right here in Cobb County.

The Places We're Thankful For The places that make home feel like home Thanksgiving gives us an excuse to pause and appreciate the big things in life, but sometimes, gratitude is found in the little, familiar places we return to again and again. Cobb County is full of places that have become part of our routines, our memories, and, ultimately, our sense of home. This season, we’re thankful for a few of them.

MARIETTA SQUARE: WHERE COBB COMES TOGETHER

At the heart of downtown Marietta, Glover Park gives residents a place to slow down, while the surrounding streets bring together restaurants, shops, museums, theaters, markets, and community events. The Square’s calendar keeps it lively year-round, from concerts and festivals to the Saturday farmers’ market. We’re thankful for a place where you can make an entire afternoon out of simply wandering around, and where a quick trip for coffee can easily turn into dinner, shopping, and an evening under the lights.

KENNESAW MOUNTAIN: A REMINDER TO LOOK UP

Cobb’s landscape might be suburban, but Kennesaw Mountain gives residents a distinctly different way to experience it. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park combines preserved history with miles of

28

M UST SE E | ARTS + C ULT U RE

trails, making it possible to spend a morning hiking, exploring, and learning about the land beneath your feet. We’re thankful for the reminder that sometimes the best way to clear your head is to put your phone away, take a walk, and see Cobb from a different perspective.

THE SILVER COMET TRAIL: ROOM TO BREATHE

From Smyrna through the western portion of the county, the Silver Comet Trail gives walkers, runners, cyclists, and skaters a place to get moving without leaving Cobb. The county’s section stretches 12.8 miles along a former railroad corridor and passes through several communities and trailheads. We’re thankful for a place for the Saturday morning bike ride, the after-work run, the leisurely dog walk, and the excuse to get outside after too much time indoors.

OUR LOCAL PARKS

One of the easiest things to take for granted is green space close to home. From East Cobb Park to Lost Mountain Park and the many others scattered throughout the county, these spaces become the backdrop for everyday life: birthday parties, first bike rides, afternoon walks, soccer games, picnics, and quiet moments alone. We’re thankful that some of the best places in Cobb don’t require a reservation, or even an admission ticket.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PLACES

Perhaps what we're most thankful for isn't a particular park, square, or trail, but the people who make these places feel like ours. The small-business owners who open their doors every morning. The local artists who fill galleries and markets with their work. The farmers and makers who show up at community markets. The volunteers who maintain parks, organize events, and support local organizations. The restaurant workers who remember regulars. The neighbors who turn a familiar place into a gathering place. That sense of community is part of what makes Cobb more than somewhere we live.

A COUNTY WORTH COMING HOME TO

There will always be reasons to leave Cobb for the weekend, but Thanksgiving is a good reminder to appreciate what’s waiting for us when we come home, like a mountain trail, town square, neighborhood park, favorite local restaurant, or familiar face. They may seem like ordinary parts of our everyday lives, but those ordinary places make a community feel extraordinary. This November, we're thankful for the places that give us somewhere to go, something to do, and, most importantly, somewhere to belong.

THE PERFECT WAY TO USE UP LEFTOVER ROAST TURKEY

TURKEY CROQUETTES ARTICLE BY REE DRUMMOND

If you’ve ever wondered what to do with all those Thanksgiving leftovers, these turkey croquettes are about to become your new favorite post-holiday tradition! They’re crispy, golden, and unbelievably comforting--everything you love about a Thanksgiving plate rolled into one delicious, dippable bite. This recipe transforms leftover mashed potatoes, roast turkey, and stuffing into irresistible little croquettes filled with melty mozzarella, savory parmesan, and fresh parsley.

Ingredients

• 2 cups cold leftover mashed potatoes • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for serving • 2 tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped, plus more for serving • 1/4 tsp. black pepper • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour • 3 large eggs • 1 1/2 cups very finely chopped cooked turkey • 1 cup leftover stuffing • 2 Tbsp. whole milk • 1 cup seasoned dried breadcrumbs • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt, plus more for sprinkling

• Vegetable oil, for frying • 1/2 cup leftover gravy, warmed • 1/2 cup leftover cranberry sauce

Directions

1. In a large bowl, combine mashed potatoes, mozzarella, parmesan, parsley, pepper, ¼ cup of the all-purpose flour, and 1 of the eggs. Fold in the turkey and stuffing. 2. Shape 1 ½-tablespoon scoops of the mixture into disks. 3. Place the remaining ½ cup flour in a shallow bowl. In another bowl, whisk together the milk and remaining 2 eggs. In a third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and salt.

How do you keep the turkey croquettes from falling apart while frying? Make sure the mixture is cold and firm before breading. If the mixture feels too soft, pop it in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes before shaping, and again after breading to help everything set.

4. Coat the disks in the flour, shaking off excess. Dip in the egg mixture and coat in the breadcrumb mixture. Place the croquettes on a tray or baking sheet. Chill in the freezer until firm, about 20 minutes. 5. Heat 1 ½ inches vegetable oil to 350°F 6. Add croquettes and fry until golden brown on all sides, 1 to 2 minutes, turning occasionally. Transfer to a paper towel and immediately sprinkle with salt. Serve the croquettes sprinkled with more parmesan and parsley, with warm gravy and cranberry sauce on the side for dipping.
