Spring is here! We’ve been cooped up indoors long enough, it’s time to get back out and explore. That doesn't have to mean planning an expedition to Antarctica. With 65 square miles between West Chester and Liberty, there is plenty of exploring to do right here in town. Spring is a great time to check out an event, park or museum here locally. Whether you want to stay near or dream of traveling somewhere far away, this issue has a new adventure for everyone. Many people have a bucket list of places they’d love to travel to one day. A group of West Chester parishioners who had been dreaming of visiting Israel were finally able to make that trip a reality. Flip to page 22 to read one traveler's highlights of that life-changing adventure. If you’d rather stay a little closer to home, consider spending a day volunteering at Tikkun Farm, a local nonprofit in Mt. Healthy. Learn more about how this organization gives back by providing food and job training opportunities for locals in need. You don’t have to leave our zip code to see something spectacular. MidPointe Library’s Makerspace allows users to explore their own creativity while making unique items on their state-of-the-art equipment. I’ve walked past this space dozens of times and never realized just how many amazing (and free to use) pieces of equipment are inside. Read more on page 12. We all know the saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” But April showers also bring umbrellas (hopefully, otherwise they bring a very wet result). It got us thinking about umbrella insurance policies and how little most people really know about them. So we enlisted a local insurance expert to clear up the confusion and answer some of the most common questions about umbrella policies. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. Lose yourself on a new trail, or in that book that’s been collecting dust. Schedule that trip you’ve been thinking about, or spend a day volunteering with your family. Whatever matters most to you, we hope you make time to add it to your calendar this spring.

Have you ever wanted to make a personalized gift but lacked the necessary tools? Or tried to order a customized item for your business, only to discover a cost-prohibitive minimum order requirement? The MidPointe Library Makerspace, Innovation Pointe, offers creative solutions for small businesses and families. “For a small business, this is so practical,” says Cari Hillman, community engagement director. “This provides opportunities that you really couldn’t afford to do one-off because it would be too expensive. So for a small business, this is a great option if you need branded materials.” The Makerspace isn’t limited to businesses–any member of the family can schedule a time to get trained on the extensive selection of equipment at Innovation Pointe. “We offer in-person appointments where you can come in, get trained on the machine, learn how to use it, learn how it works and how to operate the software,” says Makerspace Supervisor Noah Howells.
“You can select something that you can create and look at as a family,” adds Cari. “The togetherness time and the joys of creating something with your children is absolutely amazing.” Here is a rundown of seven of the most popular resources available at Innovation Pointe.
WALL VINYL/STICKERS “We have local businesses that use it for their product labels or their displays on the walls of their business, door signs, window signage and more,” says Noah. MidPointe charges at cost by the linear foot, starting at just $1 for a 6-inch by 28-inch sheet of stickers.
BUTTON MAKER At just 15 cents apiece, the button maker is a great choice for all ages. Bring a printed image, then use templates to create the final 2.25-inch button.
3D SCANNER + PRINTERS The 3D scanner makes a near-identical digital model file that can be 3D printed. This is popular for replacing lost game pieces or replicating precious memorabilia. The 3D printers can produce your own design or the staff offers feature prints that change monthly. Printer filament is provided at a pass-through cost of 10 cents per gram.

“Our most popular (machine) is our laser cutter/ engraver,” says Noah. “It uses a high-power CO2 laser to cut through and engrave on lots of different types of material.” MidPointe stocks a selection of materials that patrons can purchase at cost such as plywood, acrylic and MDF panels. Patrons may bring in their own materials and use the machine for free. Popular uses are to engrave on glass, water bottles and travel mugs.
The large format vinyl printer can print banners and posters up to 52 inches high and as long as 150 feet. This is used to create large banners for events, parties, birthday celebrations and more. Grommets can be added to make them easy to hang. Costs range from $2 to $4 per linear foot.

SUBLIMATION PRINTING Sublimation printing uses heat to transfer special ink. Innovation Pointe has a clamshell used for flat objects such as t-shirts and canvas bags (check their website for material requirements). Their mug press is designed specifically for mugs meant to be sublimated on, which they sell on-site at-cost, starting at $3.50.
DIGITAL CONVERSATION Innovation Point has tools to convert precious memories to digital. Patrons can rapidly scan photos and also convert 8mm film, slides and VHS to digital. “All of this is fabulous for saving those memories,” says Cari. “Anything you have on VHS that you want to preserve, you’re going to need to convert to digital.”

DISCOVER TIKKUN FARM, AN OASIS OF GROWTH + RESTORATION

Halfway down a quiet street in the heart of Mt. Healthy, you will find an unexpected plot of land known as Tikkun Farm, a home to farm animals and enterprising humans alike. This unique, nonprofit farm is an oasis of growth and restoration. Alongside a salt-and-pepper set of alpacas, an orchard of saplings and a greenhouse full of vegetable seedlings, hope grows here. The harvest is all about restoration. Tikkun Farm is an urban farm using sustainable practices to care for their land, animals and neighbors. It is equipped with the barns and trappings of traditional farms but outfitted for modern agriculture methods including hydroponics, aquaponics and vermicomposting. Tikkun’s animals are a supporting cast of characters with distinct personalities: potbellied pigs, a diverse flock of fowl, alpacas and other rescue animals live together in the barnyard. They teach lessons about community and trust and invite laughter and awe from visitors of all ages.
The mission of the farm is to restore people, community and creation. Executive Director Rev. Dr. Mary Laymon was divinely inspired to name the nonprofit homestead after “Tikkun olam,” the Jewish concept of mending the world. She leads the Tikkun community to bring healing to the world by providing food, educational programming, job training and healing arts for their neighbors. “We are a small, three-and-a-half-acre farm but we pack a lot in,” Mary says. “We want to feed people. We want to expand our environmental contribution. We want to bring nature to a school district that is very poor and very urban.” Tikkun Farm is a free food source that supports more than 30,000 people a year who shop at the onsite Well House three times a week. The shelves are stocked by more than 20 food-supplying partners. The Farm also offers cooking classes to children and adults and distributes 275 crock pot meals per week. Baggies of cut veggies and measured seasonings are lovingly prepared by volunteers. Education is a big part of life at Tikkun. In partnership with Mt. Healthy City Schools, Tikkun engages students of all ages in caring for the animals, land and each other as they learn to embrace the outdoors. The calendar includes literacy and poetry events, in-school programs, workshops and retreats, all to help teach students about nature, farm life and working together. The learning opportunities at Tikkun extend to include hands-on job training for young adults who are considering work in one of the trades. A 10-week rotational program
introduces post-high school students to a variety of experiences. “We offer culinary, urban farming and environmental work experiences,” Mary explains. “Our goal is to provide this educational experience for 18-to-21-year-olds who aren’t going to college. Plumbing, carpentry, electrical and welding—building trades are a great way for people to make a good living,” she says. “We hope to add that learning track in Summer of 2024.” The healing arts offered at Tikkun Farm go hand-in-hand with the spirituality that is central to the Tikkun Farm experience. Fiber Arts projects, Soul Collages, writing, pottery, painting and drum circles are regularly offered on the farm. Spiritual retreats and yoga are also on the busy community calendar. As you enter the property, you can’t miss the charred shell of The Farm House, the living space and headquarters for the Tikkun community that was lost to a devastating fire last December. Everyone made it out safely, but the house was a total loss. Mary, her husband and the staff are not strangers to rebuilding. CONTINUED >

As they recover from the fire, the Tikkun community looks ahead with positivity and hope, eager to make changes that better serve the community in which they live. The Tikkun Farm team is dedicated to strengthening programs that break cycles of poverty, address racial divides and repair and heal the community. “We are working on using the funding from the fire to build a building on the farm that will house a teaching kitchen for culinary classes and a home for a Trades workshop,” Mary says. Join Tikkun Farm in their mission of restoration: chop carrots and onions for crock pot meals, tackle a mountain of mulch, work the land, feed the animals, install plumbing for hydroponics and help rebuild. I landed at the airport outside Tel Aviv, Israel, with a sense of excitement. Since I was traveling with a group from Lord of Life Lutheran Church in West Chester, I was able to rely on the planning and expertise of our tour company to guide us through our adventure. I assumed we would spend most of our time seeing religious sites since Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Baha’i and several other faiths claim this as their home, but I was amazed to find that the area offers more culture and history to experience than the moniker “Holy Land” suggests. Israel is a unique melting pot of cultures, where the confluence of Roman, Ottoman, Egyptian, Arab and Jewish traditions create a tapestry of history and heritage. Situated at the southeast edge of the Mediterranean Sea, it is a tiny triangle of land connected to the African continent,
the Arabian peninsula and Asia. Europe is a short distance across the sea. On our first day, we stopped near the port city of Haifa, at Caesarea National Park. I could see the influence of Europe at its peak in this region—an entire Roman port, amphitheater, the remains of a palace and an aqueduct, none of which has been redeveloped in more than 2,000 years. I was fascinated by the lack of change in this sliver of land. This was a stark contrast to one of our next stops, Tel Megiddo. Here, we could see several layers of civilization, one built on top of the other. The earliest settlements at this site can be dated to around 9,000 years ago! Our journey continued to holy sites in Nazareth, Capernaum, Tiberius and across the Palestinian border into Bethlehem. Everywhere in the region, newer

buildings are built so they preserve what is left of the ancient cities. It is easy to imagine ancient texts coming to life among the old stone roads. On the Sea of Galilee, we took a wooden boat across the water and experienced the wind and mist as if we might have been throwing out nets to fish. At the Jordan River, pilgrims from various Christian denominations renewed their baptismal vows in the same waters where John the Baptist performed his baptisms. We visited Masada, an ancient fortress perched on top of a mountain overlooking the Dead Sea. The views of the desert and the sea were breathtaking, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the engineering feat of constructing a fortress in such a remote location. And then there was the unforgettable experience of floating in the Dead Sea. The high salt concentration of the water makes it effortless to float on the surface. The nearby gift shop sold countless spa products containing salt and minerals from the Dead Sea because of the supposed health benefits for your skin. Rather than shop, I chose to visit the humorously named “Lowest Bar in the World,” which sits 420 meters below sea level on the beach. When we finally got to the capital city of Jerusalem, we entered through the Lion’s Gate, which faces

the Mount of Olives. We explored the Old City and the Jewish Quarter, both of which offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history. The ancient walls, narrow alleyways and religious landmarks like the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock made me feel as though I had stepped back in time. The Western Wall, a remnant of the ancient Jewish Temple, is a powerful place of pilgrimage for millions of people each year. The bustling market is full of vibrant colors and the aromas of spices and produce. At a music shop, I bought a regional stringed instrument called an oud, which is shaped like a fat-bellied guitar with a bent neck. Throughout our journey, we enjoyed modern accommodations. We usually ate at least one meal per day at our hotel, sampling traditional cuisine from the region. The local hummus, shakshuka and falafel were all delicious. The food was even better as we explored the smaller establishments in the area, including street food vendors, local restaurants and bedouin tents.
On one of our last days in Israel, I visited Razzouk’s Tattoo Shop, which has been in business since 1300 AD, during the crusader era. I have never had a tattoo, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have a permanent memento of my trip. My artist was Nazir Razzouk, who is the 28th generation Razzouk in a long line of artists who have been marking pilgrims in the Holy Land. The tattoo on my arm is of the lion from the Lion’s Gate standing under an olive tree. Seven days of trekking through these well-worn paths left me exhausted but full of wonder and memories. I brought home a new fondness for all kinds of Mediterranean food and an appreciation for how history and geography can shape a region and a wideeyed traveler like me. Lord of Life will return to the region with another community group in March, 2024.
