*APY=Annual Percentage Yield. APY is accurate as of the last dividend declaration date. APYs accurate as of 11/1/2022. Rates may change after account is opened. If qualifications are met each monthly qualification cycle: (1) Balances up to $15,000 receive APY of 3.00%; and (2) balances over $15,000 earn 0.15% dividend rate on portion of balance over $15,000, resulting in 3.00% - 0.15% APY depending on the balance. If qualifications are not met, all balances earn 0.05% APY. Qualifying transactions must post to and settle account during monthly qualification cycle. Transactions may take one or more banking days from the date transaction was made to post to and settle an account. ATM-processed transactions do not count towards qualifying debit card transactions. “Monthly Qualification Cycle” means a period beginning one day prior to the first day of the current statement cycle through one day prior to the close of the current statement cycle. For example, if it is the month of March, there are 31 days in the month, therefore all your debit card transactions must clear and post by the close of business on March 30th. Items clearing and posting on March 31st will count toward your April debit card transaction count for qualification purposes. Transfers between accounts do not count as qualifying transactions. New Year’s Resolutions
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Michelle Moody | Michelle.Moody@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR
Tera Michelson | Tera.Michelson@CityLifestyle.com
It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority, or at least what we hope will be. About ten years ago, I made a New Year’s resolution to write a book. While I still haven’t made it past the third chapter, I did launch a magazine—so I like to count that as close enough to achieving that goal. In this month's issue, we highlight six people who live, work or grew up in our community and have all gone well beyond just chapter three—they have each published a book. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier. Our stories on Mercy Health Fairfield Hospital and Stretch Mobility both spotlight some of their unique services available to help you get healthier. Other common goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to give back or become more active in our community. On page 22 we learn how the Lakota Sports Organization is impacting both youth and adults. This local youth sports organization has a huge need for adult volunteers throughout the year. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2023!

Hospital with Heart FOUR FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT MERCY HEALTH–FAIRFIELD HOSPITAL
ARTICLE BY TERA MICHELSON PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MERCY HEALTH
At the turn of the new year, we turn our attention to Mercy Health–Fairfield Hospital, our neighboring community hospital which has earned national recognition for heart, stroke and breast cancer care. Faithfully providing quality care since 1892, Mercy Fairfield is part of the Mercy Health system in Greater Cincinnati. The warm and welcoming spirit of Fairfield Hospital starts at the top with President Justin Krueger. “Everybody has a ‘why’ for pursuing healthcare. It’s usually immensely personal,” shares Krueger, who remembers doing hospital rounds with his physician stepfather as a curious 10-year-old. “The 1,400 associates who work here get up every day, as do I, wanting to help people. They provide expert care for their neighbors,” he says. Krueger sat down with us to share four facts you may not know about this community hospital with heart.
SERVICES REACH BEYOND ITS NORTHERN SUBURB. Fairfield Hospital is rooted in Fairfield, but its services extend far beyond campus. The hospital serves as a hub of healthcare for Butler County, from Oxford to Springdale. Its mobile mammography vans travel across Cincinnati, bringing screenings directly to patients. After-hours care and convenient locations increase accessibility and flexibility for the community. “We give individuals access to care that they might not otherwise be able to receive,” says Krueger.

THE CARE TEAM IS HAPPY TO SEE YOU GO HOME.
FAIRFIELD HOSPITAL LAUNCHES HEALTHCARE CAREERS.
As much as they like their patients, the goal of Fairfield Hospital’s care team is to send you home well. In fact, they hope you don’t ever require hospitalization. By offering public education and increasing outpatient services, they are moving from reactive to proactive care, hoping to prevent illness and promote healthy lifestyles. “We are making a shift to a health and wellness focus,” explains Krueger.
Fairfield Hospital is an educational institution. As one of 600 hospitals in the world with Magnet accreditation, it is recognized as a gold-standard of excellence for training nurses. Watch for medical residents on campus soon, as they are newly approved to become a teaching hospital for physicians. “We are excited to play our role in contributing to the pipeline of future clinicians and caregivers,” Krueger says.

FAIRFIELD HOSPITAL IS POISED FOR GROWTH TO MEET THE COMMUNITY’S NEEDS.
Fairfield Hospital continues to grow alongside the community it serves. Watch for expansion in cardiovascular services with the opening of a new electrophysiology lab this year, meeting a significant need in our area. “We’ve provided expert care for nearly 45 years at Mercy Fairfield and we will continue to do that. As the community grows and evolves, we will too,” assures Krueger. “We are committed to keeping quality care close to home.”

Healing Pioneer 10 Years of Total Healing with Stretch Mobility Coach Founder Kim Nartker ARTICLE BY TERA MICHELSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTHEW J CAPPS PHOTOGRAPHY
For years, Kim Nartker was told she has a special touch as a physical therapist assistant. She listened to her patients, combined traditional therapies and pushed them a step further, developing a brand-new method in the preventative and wellness arena— The Stretch Method and its training program, The Stretch Mobility Coach. Approaching its 10-year anniversary this May, her program is going nationwide, and Kim couldn’t be more excited. “Patients kept telling me, ‘Kim, you do something different than other PTs.’ I thought they were just being sweet,” the founder and owner of The Stretch Mobility Coach in West Chester says in her signature southern accent. “What I realized is that physical therapists are taught only to get people out of pain. My model is about fixing and improving bodies by getting at the root of issues, for total healing.” As a pioneer in preventative care, Kim’s goal is to move patients from frustrating health care that limits movement to a pain-free, injury-free and surgery-free lifestyle resulting from her powerful healing methods.
“The best part of being in this business is that it works!” says Kim. “Every day we see people that have lost hope in the medical system discovering that they can live a life fully mobile, without pain and without surgery.” The newest addition to Kim’s clinic is Red Light Therapy, medical-grade lasers that supercharge the body at a cellular level. “With Red Light Therapy, you get the same benefits of a heavy workout and exposure to the vitamin D of sunlight just by resting under the red lights for 20 minutes,” Kim says. The results are glowing, youthful skin, weight loss, improved energy, sleep and digestive and eye health. It tightens skin, decreases fine lines and wrinkles and detoxes the body. Warm and soothing, Red Light Therapy also brings relief to patients suffering from chronic pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis and thyroid issues. This new year, stop in for Red Light Therapy and green light total healing with the pioneering methods of The Stretch Mobility Coach.

LSO Softball
Hav ing a Ball LAKOTA SPORTS ORGANIZATION IMPACTS CHILDREN + THEIR ADULTS Being a member of a youth sports team introduces the first taste of sweet victory and the heartbreak of defeat. As teammates, we discover what it means to work together toward a goal as we build confidence, find our place on a team and begin to unravel the mystery of our place in the world. Coaches inspire us to prepare for the worst and perform at our best. It takes a network of committed volunteers to keep a community youth sports program like the Lakota Sports Organization (LSO) running smoothly: coaches, officials, board members, groundskeepers, sponsors, parents and players work diligently to bring each season to fruition. Since 1978, LSO has grown to offer seven sports to our community’s kids of all ages, on a mission to teach game rules, playing techniques, skills and good sportsmanship. The
nonprofit organization led by volunteers organizes 350 teams each year, keeping 5,000 local children active and engaged in soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, flag football, rookie rugby and tennis. LSO offers both recreational and select sports team opportunities for children ages three and up, developing a foundation of skills and a love of sports. “LSO has affected thousands of youth in our community through the years because of the commitment, enthusiasm and compassion of our volunteers. We couldn’t ask for better role models for the kids of today and our future,” says Bruce Rhodes, LSO Executive Administrator for 16 years. Adult volunteers may say they do it for the kids, but the secret is that they’re making just as many memories and having just as much fun as the athletes.

Daniel Colpi Coach, Sponsor, Umpire + Baseball Commissioner | 10 years “Volunteering through LSO is good for my stress level. It gives me a great swell of pride and satisfaction when a player or family member—sometimes after almost a decade of them being on my team—tells me how much impact I had on them and that being on my team helped them to do whatever it is they are doing now. Without volunteering with LSO, I would not have anywhere near the level of work/life balance that keeps me loving the life I have. For that, I am grateful.”
Summer Naegal Softball + Soccer Coach | 3 years “My volunteer work is very important to me. I have stage four breast cancer and I cherish every day I get to spend teaching our local youth about the games of softball and soccer. When I am out on the field, I forget I have cancer. These kids give me more strength than they could ever comprehend. Both sports have helped my family and me create lifetime friendships.”
Mat t Clippinger Soccer Coach | 13 years “I am thankful to LSO for the many great memories our family has enjoyed and for the families that we’ve had the opportunity to meet through the LSO soccer program. The recreational soccer season has been a perfect fit for our family to enjoy soccer in-season and have an off-season to enjoy so many other fun things our area has to offer.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Jason Harden Baseball, Soccer + Flag Football Coach | 6 years “Not only is the time with my sons very important to me, but the relationships with all the children, coaches and families is priceless. The relationships we have developed over the years will last beyond our time in LSO. To me, the best thing is going to any event in the Lakota district and seeing a child that I have coached. I love hearing how they have grown, finding out what they are doing now and even being invited to go watch some at the next level, playing select ball or middle school sports. There are so many great memories, it’s hard to imagine not taking the time to coach these children.”
A ngela Schmidt Volleyball Coach, Director of Volleyball + Resource Committee Support | 13 years “Through LSO, we created and offered the youth volleyball program for the first time to our community. We started with 6 teams that first fall season, and we are now over 30 teams and offer year-round participation 13 years later. Although my kids have both grown out of participation age, my daughter now coaches and is a trainer and I still remain...I know how much LSO makes a long-lasting impact on its youth and families and I want to contribute as a leader to continue making that happen.”

OPEN WATER SWIMMER JOHN MUENZER GOES THE DISTANCE WITH HIS GOALS— AND SAYS YOU CAN TOO
Hello, 2023! This is it. This is the year that you’re going to do it! You’re going to lose those 10 pounds, run the half marathon, take that overseas trip, swim 20 miles from Catalina Island to the California mainland. Wait. What? Swim 20 miles in the ocean to California?! Oh, that is so last year for John Muenzer, who on the morning of August 3, 2022, completed the Catalina Channel Swim in 10 hours, 15 minutes, 47 seconds—a personal record. At 60 years of age, he became the oldest person to achieve the Grand Slam in open water swimming, which entails swimming the English Channel, the 20 Bridges Manhattan Swim, the Tampa Bay Marathon Swim and the Catalina Channel Swim. His story is one of unimaginably grueling workouts, menacing waters and plenty of McDonald’s and V8 Juice. It’s a nearly superhuman tale, but it can teach the rest of us a lot about setting and achieving
I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE
goals, even if it’s just cutting down on carbs or matching all the socks in our laundry. On August 2, John started his swim, entering a rough Pacific Ocean at 11:30 at night. His boat captain had given him a choice—swim now or wait until as late as noon the next day. So, he got in and started swimming in four- to five-foot swells. At one point, he swam across water that was 2,000 meters deep. For a while, a couple of whales joined him. He saw dolphins, too, and when the sun was coming up, he swam over a jellyfish field. “I got there just in the nick of time because if I got in there an hour earlier, I would’ve run through them just like I did in the English Channel,” John says matter-of-factly. Speaking like a true jellyfish veteran, he explains, “They start to go down when the sun’s coming up, and so when I went over them, they were already three feet below me.” Despite the initial high waves, sea creature encounters, and swimming through “stuff” that was like “worms and straw,” John said the hours went by quickly. He became a machine that just kept moving—with occasional breaks for “feedings,” as he calls them, until the sun came up. Around eight in the morning, he could start to see the coast. It seemed so near, but he still had about two and half hours to go. Towards the finish line, his youngest son Ray swam the last 800 meters with him. “That was really special for me,” he says. John’s Grand Slam goal, which he began working on in 2009, the year he completed the Tampa Bay and English Channel swims, had been achieved. He did it despite obstacles that included training with a broken foot in late 2021 and with torn cartilage in his left wrist in early 2022. Then, of course, there was COVID, which caused all the pools to shut down—but that didn’t stop John from finding a way to swim. He simply drove to a lake about a half hour from his house.
John en route to Catalina Island.
“I was swimming out there by myself in literally 45-, 50-degree water—with logs,” he recalls. And if the thought of working out after working all day makes you just want to lie on the couch and binge-watch Netflix, consider John, who in the middle of the winter was getting up just before four in the morning to swim three to three-and-a-half hours a day before work. For John, the secret to staying on track— through jellyfish, logs, COVID and injuries—was commitment. It was his North Star, and he absolutely refused to give up on it. “Once you start the commitment on anything—I don’t care what it is—you’ve got to finish it,” he says. Also, he used time as a strategic advantage. There was a board at his office in West Chester, listing his 56 weeks of training, and he would cross off each week as he completed it. As John sees it, “Your goal will find you, because time never stops.” Like any endurance athlete, John didn’t start off swimming 20 miles at once. He built up to it, going from swimming 4,000 yards a day to 14,000-yard daily workouts before tapering down. CONTINUED >

“JOHN IS ONE OF ONLY 27 PEOPLE WHO HAVE COMPLETED THE GRAND SLAM IN OPEN WATER SWIMMING.” John's Catalina Island swim with kayak pacer, boat and crew.
Very few of us plan to swim 20 miles in the open water. In fact, John is one of only 27 people who have completed the Grand Slam in open water swimming. However, we can all have goals that motivate us to move forward. As John sees it, we’re all on our own path to create our own story of the extraordinary. It may not be one that makes us famous, but pursuing it can lead to self-discovery, and for John, a great sense of fulfillment.

“All of us are born ordinary,” John reflects. “It’s how we find what we’re extraordinary at and take that extraordinary and build it into our life.” So, if it’s a gray day outside, and it’s oh-sotempting to stay in your cozy pants and watch that next episode, John has this invitation: “Get up off the sofa and go create your own story,” he says. “You only get to live one time, so go create your own story. It’s fun.” Jellyfish and all.

This personal narrative and poetry collection is an inspiring meditation on how life change can be for the better. Neff works through the experience of selling a business and settling into a sober life, finding clarity and purpose as he writes. Poetry is a form of healing for him, and reading his journal through loss, mental health struggles, addiction and burnout can also help readers face and learn from the challenges in their own lives.

Spe a k i ng Up for Mom
Bu i ld You r L e g ac y Gu ide

by Llee Sivitz
by Dale and Lynn Maloney
by Linda Snow-Griffin, Ph.D.
Informed by her own experience as a patient advocate for her mother, Sivitz chronicles her journey to navigate the healthcare system effectively and get the information, resources and decision-making power she needed to stand by her mom. She didn’t want anyone else to find themselves without this information when they are making hard choices about medical treatment.
Another practical handbook is this guide for handling finances in three stages: right now, if/then and after. As the Maloneys were combining financial plans in their blended family, they realized that they could use more tools for organizing their whole financial picture. Finances must be handled now but also down the road, and having everything in one place was helpful for them. They wanted to share their successful system with others.
ney of understanding; she was a practicing psychologist when her own son was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Over the course of 20 years, they both learned a lot about how best to be family to each other in the face of his diagnosis. Readers will find it both engaging as a story and informative as a resource for others seeking answers about Schizophrenia.
