We work months ahead on our content for each issue, so as I sat down to write this letter on a rainy October afternoon, I was struggling to get into the holiday mindset. So I lit a cookie-scented candle and asked Alexa to play Christmas music. By engaging a few of my senses, I was immediately transported forward in time to a cozy holiday evening. It made me think about what an important role our senses play in our memories, especially those tied to the holiday season. Hearing—I LOVE Christmas music! I have a rule that I won’t start playing it until after Thanksgiving. But once that day comes, all other music genres vanish until January. Last year I finally made a playlist of my all-time favorite holiday songs—everything from Bing Crosby to Gwen Stefani with lots of Pentatonix and Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers in between. It’s the perfect blend of songs that take me back to my childhood mixed with more modern songs that my kids enjoy. Smell—Scent is the most powerful sense tied to memory. I love the intermixing of fragrances during the holidays; imagine a blend of fresh-cut pine with Christmas cookies or the smell of a turkey baking while mulling spices simmer. The scents of the holidays are truly the best of the year! Taste—Every family has favorite foods and drinks they serve during the holidays, saving many of those recipes just for this special time of the year. Keeping those foods for the holidays helps engrain them in the memories we tie to the season. Sight—People decorate their homes inside and out for the holidays more than any other time of the year. We have two traditions in my home centered around Christmas ornaments. Every family member gets a new ornament each year based on their current interests. We also buy an ornament on every family trip. This makes decorating our Christmas tree a beautiful walk down memory lane. Touch—My favorite part of the season is spending time with family that lives far away. We only get to see these relatives once or twice a year, so it makes our Christmas together extra special. A hug from a loved one is quite possibly the best gift of the season. This holiday season we encourage you to actively engage your senses to create long-lasting memories.

The Spicy Olive Pomegranate Party Punch BASE RECIPE • 5½ cups pomegranate juice (or pom-cranberry) • 2 cups ginger ale, chilled • 2 cups seltzer or club soda, chilled • ½ cup The Spicy Olive’s Pomegranate Quince White Balsamic Vinegar Pour 1½ cups of pomegranate juice into an ice cube tray and freeze overnight. In a large bowl, mix remaining 4 cups of juice, ginger ale, soda and vinegar. Add the pomegranate ice cubes and serve from a punch bowl.
Spirited Twists Two of our favorite ways to transform this punch into an adults-only crowdpleaser. (Have delicious ideas of your own? Go ahead, let your creativity sparkle!) 1. Add your preferred vodka or light rum (or both?) to the recipe above and enjoy. 2. For an elegant, special cocktail, place three pomegranate seeds in the bottom of a champagne flute. Add the pomegranate punch to fill the flute half full. Add champagne or other effervescent wine and toast the wonderful host.

Another popular decorating trend this holiday is plaid, evoking a cozy cabin vibe. Natural elements like frosted pinecones and bright berries are a weather-resilient and inexpensive backdrop to this rustic porch. The star of this style is a joyful wooden door hanger in red plaid. Mundey adds a pop of color with matching red tartan ribbons and bows as tree toppers and on the exterior light fixtures. “Plaid is in for the holidays,” says Mundey. “Some people really go for alternatives to wreaths on the door like this ‘joy’ sign—simple banners, planters and signboards can tie in your style,” he adds. Pay homage to the holidays of the past with a Vintage Retro front porch. This sentimental style evokes warm memories and storytelling. A covered porch is a safe place to feature family heirlooms like a pair of light-up nutcrackers that stand sentry at the front door, welcoming guests with carols. “These are our small set of nutcrackers,” Mundey says with a chuckle. WHEEL OF FORTUNE WINNER Liberty Township Resident Wins
Mark Neff is a word guy. He grew up playing the Jumble in the daily newspaper with his mom and as an adult, he is an author. His world came full circle when he earned a contestant spot on Wheel of Fortune. After some dramatic ups and downs in his game, he came home to Liberty Township as a winner. “I’ve always been a word person,” Neff says. “I was watching the show with friends during the pandemic, and a lot of times I can get a puzzle with just a few letters.” With their encouragement, Neff applied that very evening. “Three years later, I got the email that they wanted to put me in the interview process to be a contestant.”

Neff easily navigated the audition process simply by being himself—a hair stylist turned life coach, a self-proclaimed “Hair-apist.” While in Los Angeles for the show, Neff and the other players had the full backstage experience: hair and makeup, meals in the Sony Studios cafeteria and personal greetings by the hosts, Pat Sajak and Vanna White. In a show of grace under pressure, Neff solved the phrase, “APPLE PIE JUST LIKE MOM USED TO MAKE.” In the Bonus Round, he won with “FORMAL GALA.” By the end of the episode, he eked out the win, just $599 above the second-place player. “I won $14,300 in cash, a 10-day rail tour of Ireland and a 2023 Lincoln Corsair,” he announces. “Just being on the show, I felt like I was winning already. The prizes were a bonus on top of that,” he says. Neff was the guest of honor at a local viewing party, held in September at the Draft Bar & Grille. He had to wait until the show aired to share his good news. “It was the longest seven weeks of my life!” Neff exclaims. “I had gotten two bankruptcy spots as my first two spins. I knew it was going to make great nail-biting TV. It was super fun to see the excitement of everyone as they cheered me on.” Neff’s game show experience reaches way beyond the limelight—he’s deeply grateful. “The real magic for me was the full circle moment of having written a book on authenticity and then having that be one of the key characteristics they’re looking for in their contestants,” he explains. “When we’re being our authentic selves, we’re open in more ways than we realize. That’s when we’re able to receive the amazing things that life presents us. Being on the Wheel of Fortune is a perfect example of something amazing to receive.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds.
