In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages an expression of gratitude. Early each Friday morning at the National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting, you can follow the sounds of laughter and lively discussion to find the Rotary Club of West Chester/ Liberty. The local branch of this international organization gathers weekly to meet, eat, learn and laugh together. The diverse group—women and men of all ages and from a wide variety of professional backgrounds—is united in a singular goal: service. “We are the largest service organization in the world,” shares Steve Silverberg, Rotary president. With more than 40 members and hard at work for 32 years, the West Chester/Liberty club is thriving in an expanding district. “Rotary was started by a gentleman who just wanted to bring people together from different industries and do good for their community,” says Emily Hughes, former club president. “Now we are in 100 plus countries and here locally, we have clubs from Bellefontaine to Cincinnati in our district.” The generous group of local professionals give their time, talents and treasure, individually and collectively. A blue banner emblazoned with the prominent gold Rotary wheel is a backdrop to the weekly meetings, a reminder of the importance of each member as a spoke in the wheel to bring strength to the unit, working together to push forward. Their motto is, “Service Above Self.” The inspiring momentum of the West Chester/Liberty Rotary Club is giving back with gratitude. Rotary Club members engage in year-round community service and

fundraising efforts to partner with organizations that are making a big difference in our townships: EDGE Teen Center, Reach Out Lakota, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Faith Alliance benefit from Local Impact Grants given by Rotary—$15,000 was awarded last year. Rotary also awards 32 scholarships to local high school seniors each year, celebrating students in leadership roles at Butler Tech, as well as Lakota East, West and Central. Their generosity extends regionally through their work with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, coming together with other club branches to provide supplies and skills to craft beds for children in our county who don’t have them. “We built 80 beds for Kids in the Butler County region last year,” Hughes shares. “We’ve set a goal to build 200 beds this year,” Silverberg adds. Rotary Club even takes their spirit of giving abroad to Mexico, where they work with a local chapter to provide opportunities for safe water for families. “It’s life-changing! They make over 200 water filters that go home with 200 different families,” says Silverberg. “Those filters really provide the financial freedom to be able to continue elevating a family,” shares Hughes, who went on last year’s trip. “It’s a beautiful spot where we can make an immediate impact. It’s a vacation with a purpose,” she says. With a natural blend of professionals from so many different areas of expertise, membership in Rotary is a networking and learning experience. “I love being around people from different industries,” Hughes reflects about her Rotary membership. “I’m a young professional. In Rotary, I’ve been challenged by experiences I may not have had in my job, but I’m able to grow as a professional, meet some friends along the way and have amazing mentors. That’s what has been really valuable to me.” Between work and service projects, Rotary members enjoy fun times together, too. They gather for regular happy hours, parties and community events.

“It’s not a social club, but we are social,” Silverberg explains. “These are lifelong friends that are like-minded and want to give service to others. It’s beautiful. It’s a great club of great people that are friendly and outgoing and I’m very blessed to be a part of it.” The Rotary wheel is a cog that functions best when it links with others for community service, learning and fun. THE LAKOTA FAMILY YMCA BRINGS THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER IN BODY, MIND + SPIRIT All year long, the Lakota Family YMCA gives back to all ages of members of our community, from newborns dropped off at their daycare to retirees participating in SilverSneakers. Sara Matchison, membership and marketing director for the Lakota Family YMCA, admires the nonprofit’s ability to bring people together from all backgrounds across Liberty Township and West Chester into one community. “We try to do everything we can to make everyone feel welcomed in this area,” Matchison says. “The focus of YMCA is on the needs of the community.” While the first YMCA, or Young Men’s Christian Association, was founded in England in 1844, the organization has since grown to become one of the largest nonprofits in the United States with more than 2,650 branches across the United States. The charity serves approximately seven million adults and four million children and teens in

the country each year through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility programs. “I think people forget that we’re a nonprofit and they don’t always see the impact we’re having on the community,” Matchison says. The Lakota Family YMCA strengthens the local community through a wide variety of programs and resources geared to help people develop a healthy body, mind and spirit. The center serves as a convenient drop-off donation location for Reach Out Lakota, a local community food and clothing pantry. They also regularly host free blood drives and mammogram screenings for community members. The nonprofit even extends their reach to families who may only be temporarily living in the area, offering free memberships to those staying at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for chemotherapy or medical treatment. With this gym in particular, you can come and feel like you’re part of one big family, from newborns all the way up.” Daniel Kuhn, marketing coordinator for the Lakota YMCA, says engaging in these programs allows him to learn more about the Liberty Township and West Chester areas. “‘It’s more than a gym,’…is the big thing I hear a lot,” Kuhn says. “With this gym in particular, you can come and feel like you’re part of one big family, from newborns all the way up.” Kuhn says the YMCA offers its members an escape from the stresses of work and daily life. “Whether it’s members or our staff, everyone’s very happy-go-lucky around here,” Kuhn says. “It’s a warm, safe, inviting place you can come to.” This winter, the Lakota Family YMCA continues giving back to the local community with their annual Giving Tree in partnership with Reach Out Lakota. Set to launch during the second week of November, community members select an ornament–which lists a requested gift–off of the Lakota YMCA’s Giving Tree. Community members purchase, wrap and donate the requested gifts, which go to one of 800 local children whose families are experiencing financial hardship. The Lakota Family YMCA will also participate in the global movement Giving Tuesday, coming November 28. Through this Giving Tuesday campaign, Lakota Family YMCA members can help support financial assistance for those who cannot afford a membership and the organization’s Veteran discount program. The Giving Tuesday campaign also supports The Lakota Family YMCA’s foster care/kinship program, which gives some families 20% off their memberships and scholarships for childcare, swimming, camp and other programs. Matchison and Kuhn say the nonprofit’s biggest event this year will be Cookies with Santa from 6-8 p.m. on Dec. 8. During this event families can bring their children to visit and eat cookies with Santa Claus. Those who are interested in volunteering for this event can email helpcenter@lakotaymca.com for more information. “At the end of the day, seeing the kids’ smiles makes it all worth it,” Kuhn says.

I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak…I will shepherd the flock with justice. — Ezekiel 34:16 NIV Drawing inspiration from the profound words of Ezekiel 34:16, Scott and Kathy Rosenow have become steadfast shepherds at the helm of The Shepherd’s Crook Orphan Ministry (TSC) in Fairfield Township. Established in 2002, TSC is a beacon of hope for orphaned children facing unique challenges.

Parents to four biological children, two of whom have their own challenges, the Rosenows feel a deep calling to extend their love and care to other children in similar situations. In their journey to expand their family through adoption, they choose to focus on the often-overlooked, hard-to-adopt children, setting in motion a remarkable ministry that has primarily grown through word of mouth. Their family has grown to 23 children, with 16 still at home, along with one granddaughter. The Rosenows’ 19 adopted children hail from diverse corners of the world, including China, Haiti, Bolivia, Guatemala, Romania and Africa. CONTINUED >

According to the Rosenow family, wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, antiseizure medications, braille and monthly doctor and therapy appointments are the norm for their home, but they wouldn’t change a thing. “One thing we tell our kids is Jeremiah 29:11: God has plans with hope and a future, even when our senses tell us differently,” says Kathy. “There is beauty the world has missed by mislabeling our precious ones.”

Today, TSC features more than 1,200 adoptable-age children on their website, utilizing email campaigns and Facebook to raise awareness. The landscape of adoption has evolved significantly over the years. In 2004, adoption reached its peak, with approximately 23,000 U.S. and foreign adoptions. This number has dwindled to fewer than 2,000 annually due to numerous changes in intercountry adoption.

“From the very beginning, we decided we were going to be a partner organization for adoption agencies,” Scott reflects. “They tell us which of their kids with special needs they want us to help them with.” In response to shifts in transnational adoption, the Rosenows adapted and expanded their ministry. They now provide essential necessities to orphans, run an adoption prevention program to support struggling families, finance rehabilitation and surgery trips for untreated medical conditions and offer training on dealing with the unique challenges faced by trauma-affected children. Many adopted children grapple with emotional issues stemming from their time in orphanages. The invaluable tools and insights developed by the Rosenows for adoptive parents have proven beneficial for biologically born children as well. Scott emphasizes the importance of understanding a threatened child’s brain and the instinctual fight or flight response. “We teach parents how to talk to their children and react when things get out of hand,” he says.

The impact of TSC is profound, with more than 400 children finding loving homes through their inspiring work. Stories of triumph, like that of TSC adoptees Leighanna and Linnea, serve as a testament to TSC’s enduring commitment. “The Lord sees you in your suffering,” Leighanna says. “Your affliction is not your identity. But if you’re willing, he will use it to encourage others and help them know they are not alone.” “There were challenges through the teenage years,” Linnea adds, “but my parents persevered through the tough times. I sometimes wonder what my life would be like if I was left behind and never adopted. It would be a sad story for sure.” Join in the mission of TSC, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, operating with three full-time employees and a dedicated team of about 30 volunteers and relying solely on donations and fundraisers to continue their work. Farm Fresh Turkey Take Your Thanksgiving Meal to the Next Level + Support Local Farms with Fresh Turkey The star of many holiday meals is undoubtedly the turkey. Rich in essential vitamins, minerals and protein, it’s a wholesome part of dinner. This Thanksgiving season we’re highlighting southwest Ohio farms offering fresh turkeys for your big meal. The most significant taste differences between fresh and frozen turkeys are texture and moisture. Freezing causes ice crystals to form around the muscles which makes the meat chewier and drier. Fresh turkeys may have slightly different flavors due to a natural diet and are more tender and juicy. “A fresh turkey tends to hold moisture better, cook up faster and is more flavorful. A fresh, local turkey has been raised and cared for by a member of your community. When you support your local farmers, you are supporting your community,” says Dogwood Farm’s Samantha Steiner. Experts recommend planning for 1.5 lbs per person, which allows for leftovers. Fresh turkey should be stored in the refrigerator and cooked within a few days. “Purchasing fresh saves the hassle of days of thawing, still being frozen because you forgot to thaw or going bad because the turkey was thawed too early,” explains Kevin Koch of Valley View Turkey Farm. There are many ways to prepare a holiday bird. A few of the classic methods include deep frying, smoking, oven roasting, grilling and brining. Steiner and Koch prefer oven-roasting their turkeys. Cooking the breast down allows more moisture to stay in the breast meat while cooking the breast up results in crispier skin and a more rounded presentation.

While Saylor Pastures is primarily a chicken and egg farm, they do offer a limited selection of fresh, pasture-raised Thanksgiving turkeys. Their turkeys are raised outdoors which provides a diet enriched by grasses, fresh air, adequate exercise and sunlight. Their white feathered turkeys are supplemented with organic grains, resulting in moist, flavorful birds. Turkeys are ready by 11/20. Deposit: $40 per turkey. Price: $4.50 per pound. Average weight: 18-20 lbs.
