Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue of West Chester + Liberty Lifestyle, we highlight students who are making a difference in our community and around the world. We meet student athletes who recently achieved state title championships, a college senior who spent a month volunteering in Switzerland and a high school student serving on a selective national committee. If you know a local student who did something amazing this summer, we’d love to hear about it. We know how much our readers love their “fur babies,” so half of this issue is dedicated to those beloved pets of ours. On page 21, you can read about the joys of greyhound adoption and meet a West Chester family who currently has four adopted dogs. We also provide the recipe for some special treats for your pets and kids. As summer begins to wind down, we want to share a fun travel destination that is perfect for kids and adults of all ages—Universal Orlando. We picked a spot that works well for a long weekend, so even if you’re out of vacation days for this summer, you can still plan a quick fall or winter getaway. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love—whether they walk on two legs or four.

When looking for a family-friendly vacation spot, it can be challenging to find one location that appeals to a variety of ages. Some vacation spots lack the attractions needed to keep adventurous teens entertained, while others leave the little ones sitting in strollers with little to do. Universal Orlando offers a vacation that is sure to please family members of all ages.

FOR THE LITTLE ONES Woody Woodpecker’s Kidzone and Seuss Landing are the two main areas specifically geared toward the younger ones. Filled with whimsical décor and kid-friendly rides, shows and attractions, these storybook scenes come to life and kids love being immersed in them. Camp Jurassic is packed with indoor, hands-on activities perfect to entertain the tots as older kids head to bigger coasters nearby. Me Ship, The Olive is a Popeye-themed playground with multiple levels of fun to explore. There are other rides scattered throughout the parks that are good for all ages (see below), but before stepping into the queue, it’s a good idea to read the detailed descriptions in a tour book, as some rides could have slightly scary content or unpredictable turns.

TEENS AND BEYOND Adventure-seekers will find dozens of ways to get their adrenaline pumping at Universal Orlando. There are numerous high-thrill coasters like the new Jurassic World VelociCoaster, The Incredible Hulk Coaster with seven inversions and the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, which has a completely vertical ascent. Universal Orlando is known for its creative integration of 3-D videos with high-action rides that make the rider feel like they’re right in the action. Through these creative

and thrilling rides, one can escape from Gringotts, help the Transformers protect the AllSpark and partner with SpiderMan to save the world, just to name a few.

ALL AGES The themes in each unique section of the parks are stunning to take in regardless of age, but nothing tops the detail in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Be sure to pick up a wand at Olivander’s so its “magic” can be used to make the storefronts come to life. The Hogwarts Express transfers passengers between the two main parks in a memorable journey. Flight of the Hippogriff is a good “beginner” coaster for those 36” and higher. Each Wizarding World of Harry Potter has live performances throughout the day, and Hogsmeade has Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle that are worth staying until dusk to see. The shows are spectacular! Animal Actors on Location will have you laughing at the silly and talented animal actors. The new Bourne Stuntacular utilizes an incredibly realistic video screen paired with real life stunt actors to put on a death-defying live show. Other rides that work well for most ages are Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, The Simpsons Ride, Pteranodon Flyers, Kang & Kodos’ Twirl ‘n’ Hurl and Poseidon’s Fury.

TIPS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR TRIP Plan three full days for a visit so you can spend one day at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, another at Universal Studios Florida and use the third day to either return to favorite attractions or head to the waterpark, Volcano Bay. This also makes a visit to Universal Orlando perfect for a long weekend, so there’s no need to wait for winter, spring or summer break to plan your trip. CONTINUED >

Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure

“Nothing tops the detail in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.” For the full experience, stay at one of the Universal hotels. They include early admission to one park each day and free shuttles to the parks and CityWalk, the restaurant and entertainment district. The brand-new value properties offer affordable accommodations, while the three premier resorts include the added benefit of a free upgrade to Express Unlimited. Express Unlimited is an add-on to your ticket that allows you in the Express Lane for almost all rides and attractions. This feature typically cuts the wait time by 75%, averaging around a 15-minute wait per ride. Express ticket options can also be purchased for an extra fee. Arrive early to maximize your day. Wait times are often shortest first thing in the morning, so time your arrival to be about a half hour before the park opens so you can get to some of the most popular attractions like the new Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (my family’s favorite ride) and Jurassic World VelociCoaster.

Be prepared—the water rides at Island of Adventure will drench you. These rides are a great way to cool down on a hot day, but be sure to bring a change of socks and shoes so you’re comfortable for the rest of the visit. Free lockers are provided throughout the park, so you can bring a small backpack without worrying about how to stow it (check size recommendations on their website). They are adding new rides and attractions each year, with CityWalk’s new escape rooms, Universal’s Great Movie Escape, opening soon. The two interactive missions use captivating storytelling and intricately detailed sets to take guests to the dinosaur adventures of Jurassic World or the time-traveling chaos of Back to the Future. When the doorbell rings at the Turner household, four long, sleek snouts line up at the front door with a wet welcome. Doug and Sarah Turner are parents to teenage daughter Emily and fur babies Eva, Rummy, Sheeba and Sid. The tall, lean dogs are retired racing greyhounds, adopted into the family through Greyhound Adoption of Greater Cincinnati (GAGC). While they are eager to greet and meet someone new, they quickly retreat to various cushions in the family’s living room, ears back and tongues hanging out, super chill. Doug fell in love with the unique breed when he and his mom adopted their first two greyhounds in 1995

and since, he and his family have adopted six others and fostered more than 15. “I’m like a moth to a flame when it comes to these dogs,” Doug says. “There’s something about them that I’ve been drawn to for decades.” Now a senior at Lakota West High School, Emily is used to being surrounded by her fur family. “All my friends say, ‘Oh my gosh, your dogs are so big!’ And I’m like, ‘They’re big babies!’” Emily says. “One of my first very clear memories is little 4½-yearold me running alongside Wally [the first family greyhound]. We picked each other.” CONTINUED >

When they retire from the track and enter the adoption process, many greyhounds are coming into homes for the first time and must navigate suburban basics, like how to go up and down stairs and the dangers of slippery floors and glass doors. The foster program helps ease this transition. “It’s amazing. Our dogs kind of show the fosters the ropes,” Sarah says. “That’s why the foster program works so well,” Doug adds. “They are very intelligent and pick up on the patterns of the other greyhounds. We get them acclimated.” The four pets are happy at home with the Turners. Each displays its own unique personality. At age 12, Rummy is the diva of the pack. Nine-year-old Eva sprawls on her back on the couch with legs mid-air in a pose the Turners call “cockroaching.” Four-year-old Sid’s tongue is often hanging out. He is still learning how to share squeaky toys with 2-year-old Sheeba, the newest addition to the family. All of the pups enjoy treats and are motivated by scratches behind the ears. “They are the best dogs—so sweet and so loyal,” Emily shares. GAGC Founder and President Brenda Pennix of Liberty Township has been in the business of finding loving homes for retired racing greyhounds for 25 years. What started as a hobby has grown into a passion. The organization celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, having placed more than 1,500 dogs in tri-state homes. “I’ve found it is my mission to find loving homes for greyhounds,” Brenda says. “The Turners are super owners. I wish all of my families were as passionate about their dogs as they are!” While greyhounds tend to be sensitive creatures that love human attention, they are pretty low maintenance and require no more exercise than your average dog. GAGC dogs come from caring owners and healthy training environments. “There’s a common misconception that they are high-energy animals that come

from a bad experience—the truth is quite the opposite,” Brenda explains. “They are 45-miles-an-hour couch potatoes,” she says. “We do not rescue dogs. They are all cared for very well. We simply find homes for them,” she says. Since they are sprinters and trained to chase game, greyhounds can only come off leash in a fenced area. After some morning “zoomies” around the yard, the Turner’s fab four spend a majority of the day relaxing, living out the dog days of summer in the air conditioning. “I’m kind of like the dog dealer among my friends,” Doug says. “The danger is that you might not be able to stop with just one!” he says with a knowing smile. Peanut Butter Balls are a delicious, high protein snack that are perfect for kids. With a few simple modifications, you can also make this recipe dog-friendly. So, grab two bowls and get ready to mix up these delicious and easy-to-make treats.

1 cup rolled oats cup natural peanut butter 2 Tablespoons honey ¼ cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips ½ cup flax seeds

1 cup pumpkin puree ¼-1/2 cup natural peanut butter ¼ cup milk or water 3 cups pre-cooked* oatmeal or rolled oats

DIRECTIONS • Keep your kid and pet ingredients separate. In two separate bowls, mix each set of ingredients, reserving a small portion of the oats for the end. Refrigerate for 15 minutes. Roll into ¼-inch balls. Once done, roll balls into reserved oats to lightly coat.. Place in a closed container and refrigerate for up to two weeks.

REGAN DENHAM There’s no such thing as a summer break for 2020 Lakota East graduate Regan Denham. Regan plowed through a four-year undergraduate program in just two years, earning a degree in Human Health Science from the University of Kentucky in 2022. This summer, she met 17 other students in Geneva, Switzerland for a threeweek summer traineeship with UNICEF. The program offered hands-on experience with UNICEF’s humanitarian aid efforts, combining real-life work with the opportunity to give back. While there, Regan enjoyed sightseeing: the particle accelerator at CERN, Red Cross Museum, the charming town of Lutry and even nearby France. “This trip was humbling. There’s a whole world out there,” Regan reflects. “It’s a good reminder for when I get stuck on small things. I learned how to be happy and content with myself.”

A’ZARIYAH BRYANT When Lakota East senior A’Zariyah Bryant toed up to the starting line for her race, there were hundreds of people watching her from the stands of Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The 2022 Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Track and Field Championships brought the best athletes from across the state, but no one could faze A’Zariyah as she leaped out of the starting blocks at the sound of the gun, taking the win in just a matter of seconds. In early June, just after her graduation, A’Zariyah competed in the OHSAA Track and Field Championships in the 100 and 200-meter-dash, placing first in both events. A’Zariyah, who has been running track since the age of eight, says that her preparation helped her secure the win in her events. “My favorite part about running track is the mental readiness in advance,” A’Zariyah says.

“You could have all the physical attributes to be an advanced runner, but if you’re not mentally secured, all of that is insubstantial. When I’m in a great headspace, I’m prone to have a greater performance.” Overcoming an injury in 2021 makes A’Zariyah especially grateful for both her athletic performance and faith in God, which fuel her as she continues her athletic and academic careers at the University of Illinois. “One bad day, practice or meet does not define your overall agility as an athlete,” A’Zariyah says. “Take glory in your ‘bad days’ or ‘losses’ because we know that if we can overcome days like this, this produces perseverance and perseverance creates character and great character gives you a greater hope for yourself.” CONTINUED >

LAKOTA WEST VARSITY SOFTBALL TEAM When the season began, winning a state title was no more than a far-off idea for the Lakota West Varsity Softball team. But as the team clinched 16 consecutive wins, this idea became a reality when the Firebirds took the field at Firestone Stadium in Akron for the 2022 OHSAA Division I Softball Championship game against Holland Springfield. The Firebirds won the state title with a score of 9-2. West senior and first baseman Jasmine Walker was one of 10 seniors on the team led by Coach Keith Castner. “Our coach always tells us to focus on the game we’re playing at that moment or the practice we’re doing that day,” Jasmine says. “So, when we were actually there, playing the game, and actually starting to win, it was surreal.” Fellow senior and right fielder Lily Volmer, who will be attending University of Arizona this fall, was surprised by the size of Firestone Stadium, much larger than her home field. Despite the magnitude of the stadium, the environment felt supportive, thanks to the parents and players. “The atmosphere was very welcoming,” Lily says. “Even though the other team [lived] closer and had more parents, our parents brag that they were louder than them.” Jasmine will be attending Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University this fall and says that winning the state game was a perfect way to end her softball career. “We made the idea [of winning state] super tangible,” Jasmine says. “At first it didn’t feel like a state game. It felt like any other game, but then when we won it kind of hit that four years of hard work paid off.”

SUNITVIR TAUNQUE Lakota West Junior Sunitvir Taunque had never been called to the principal’s office before, but last spring the scholar athlete was summoned for good news—he had been selected to serve on the National Student Advisory Council for the League of Innovative Schools. Sunitvir is one of six founding students chosen from the country to lead and guide the League of Innovative Students, a technology focus group. Together, the teams will provide a student voice and real-time feedback to school districts as they embrace and expand technology for innovation in education. They began meeting virtually in June, allowing Sunitvir to log on from India while visiting his grandparents.

Sunitvir, who enjoys playing multiple instruments and competing with cross country, track, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) and the chess team at Lakota West, is passionate about exploring practical educational experiences for students. “Not enough experiences in schools are practical,” he says. “It’s important to ensure that students are learning, not just memorizing. Virtual reality technology, for example, is a way to be in school, but in a real world setting at the same time.” Another initiative that Sunitvir hopes to address with the Council is the elimination of racism and bias in education. “Education should be fair and equal,” he says. “Everybody should get equal opportunities at school.”
