Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the most enjoyable summers are those taken at a slower pace exploring places and activities around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” aren’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it can be refreshing to take the time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best summer day activities are a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water or eating ice cream. Among my favorite summertime activities as a child were our neighborhood games of kickball, kick the can and ghosts in the graveyard. All the kids from our street would gather for these nightly games, no matter how old or young they were. I love seeing this tradition continue in my neighborhood today with my children and their friends. Most nights there will be a game of flashlight tag, capture the flag, kickball or baseball happening on our street with kids spanning ages 5 to 18. It's great to see these summertime traditions carry on to the next generation. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the happenings around our towns this summer and ways to get out and explore together. From summer volunteer opportunities to the best spot to enjoy a cool summer treat, this issue is packed with ideas to help you have a fun summer right here in Cincinnati. Have a happy summer!

The American Sign Museum is a Cincinnati treasure—a 20,000 square-foot gem, glowing with lightbulbs and neon. Be a tourist in our own town and take in the sights of 500 signs from the last century for a colorful mash-up of history, art and science. Designed to celebrate the rich history of American signage through preservation and education, the museum hosts more than 50,000 visitors each year from around the globe and celebrated its tenth anniversary in its Camp Washington location in June. Founder Tod Swormstedt has been on a mission to tell the stories of signs and the sign industry since the museum’s beginning in 1999. “We see signs every day, so we may take them for granted,” says Erin Holland, manager of digital communications and engagement at the American Sign Museum. “So much craftsmanship goes into signs. They connect deeply with our culture. It’s something you might not think about as you are driving through downtown, but once they start taking the signs down, you do.” The path through the exhibits follows a timeline and evolution of signs in America, featuring the obscure to the familiar. “Our signs come from all across the country,” Erin says. “We’ve got signs from Times Square; Kansas City; Anaheim, California; and Columbus, Ohio. We do our best to have a nationwide representation.” The museum houses 100 years of wooden, lightbulb, neon and plastic signage from the US. The showrooms highlight the changing technologies that artisan signmakers used to craft the mascots, slogans and logos of businesses. “Bulbs gave way to neon in the US in the 1930s,” Erin explains. “The cheerful orange neon was popular during the height of the depression. Eventually, businesses wanted something a little faster and cheaper, so plastic took over,” she continues, gesturing to an oversized Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame. A historic Frisch’s Big Boy welcomes visitors at one aisle, while Speedy, an early McDonald’s mascot, blinks on another. Nostalgic businesses advertise their wares and services in all shapes, sizes and colors. Many of the signs on exhibit have been carefully restored, but each piece is approached with the goal of preserving its history. Some wooden signs are chipped; one of the signs sports a bullet hole. The signs tell a story and teach lessons about the culture that posted them. Stroll down a recreated American avenue the museum calls “Main Street,” complete with storefronts of a bygone era. Across from the barber shop and next door to a pizza parlor stands the storefront of an actual Cincinnati business, Rohs Hardware. CONTINUED >

“Rohs was a hardware store on Vine Street in OTR,” says Erin. “We were only expecting to get the neon letters, but Tod also acquired the storefront panels and front door. It is our most legitimate storefront.” A wall of Cincinnati signs pays homage to other local businesses: Hudepohl, General Electric, Suders Art Store and more. The lineup of familiar names faces a rustic barn wall with a Mail Pouch Tobacco ad painted black and gold. The American Sign Museum hosts private parties and gatherings of all sizes between these two contrasting and iconic scenes. They are a vivid backdrop to receptions, live music, classes and corporate meetings. This is your sign to head to the American Sign Museum for a tour you won’t soon forget. Enjoy warm summer nights by relaxing with a cool beverage in a comfortable Adirondack chair. A great alternative to buying a new chair is to build one yourself. These Adirondack chairs can easily be built in a couple hours with a just a few tools and some wood. So, if you’re looking for an easy DIY project that can make your summers more enjoyable, head to the hardware store and give it a try. Most of the tools needed for this project can be found at any local hardware store or even be borrowed from a neighbor. When complete, sand and finish with an appropriate exterior finish or paint.

Step One Cut the chair stringers at a 90-degree angle at the foot. Attach the 31¾ inch arms with 2½ inch screws to one of the 19½ inch 2x4 boards. Build the arms the same way.

Step Two Drill pocket holes on both ends of two of the 19½ inch 2x4s. Attach with the 2½ inch screws to the frame of the chair.

Step Three Lay the seat boards that are 22½ inches to the frame of the chair with 1½ inch screws. Screw three per side and leave ¼ inch gap in between for water drainage.

Step Four Place one of the 19½ inch boards behind the chair back for support and attach the 32¾ boards flush to the bottom of the stringer and attach through the legs of the chair with 2½ inch screws. Repeat with the other side then remove the support board.

Step Five Attach a 19½ inch 2x4 to base of the chair in the back with 2½ inch screws and then attach the seat back 19½ inch 1x10s to the chair back using 1½ inch screws and leaving a gap for drainage. Sand and stain with a good exterior stain.

Six Opportunities to Make a Difference This Summer Do you have some extra time on your calendar this summer? Fill it with volunteer opportunities that match your passions and talents for a meaningful season of service. Our community runs on volunteer power. From fundraisers to advocacy, there’s no shortage of opportunities to help. Giving back to our neighbors and the place we call home even has health benefits. Beyond gaining a sense of purpose and better understanding of our community, generous people live longer and have better mental and physical health. Volunteers experience lower blood pressure, less stress and anxiety and increased happiness. Scientists call the feel-good side effects of generosity “Giver’s Glow.” Philanthropy alters brain chemistry, giving a sense of peace and calm. Volunteer to help those who are ill and their loved ones and caregivers at UC Health’s West Chester Hospital. Give your time to assist with hospitality, patient visitation, as a musician, in the gift shop or in many other service roles as needed. There are two separate volunteer programs, one for adults and the other for teens; both are ongoing, yearround. Orientation and training are provided. Voice of America MetroPark relies on volunteers to keep it beautifully maintained and staffed for daily use and special events. Calling all outdoors enthusiasts and green thumbs! Assist park staff with hands-on tasks like gardening and litter collection on Community Workdays, scheduled for each third Thursday of the month during May through November. If you enjoy the park’s trails, consider serving as a Biking Monitor, Hiking Monitor or Trail Steward through the Trail Ambassador Program (TAP). Volunteers monitor, maintain and promote the trail system on a flexible schedule. For those that don’t mind getting a little wet, volunteer at the annual Crazy Cardboard Regatta on July 16. Help is needed with setup, cleanup, registration, boat inspections, the award ceremony and more at this community favorite event. Jump into action at the Food Truck Rally, sponsored by the Union Centre Boulevard Merchant Association (UCBMA) on August 12. Whistle while you work to set up, pour and serve beverages, sell tickets or teardown this annual community event featuring dozens of food trucks and live music at the Clock Tower at The Square @ Union Centre, West Chester. This year, proceeds support Edge Teen Center. Sign up for a specific job and shift online.

This nonprofit, faith-based organization in Sharonville is committed to turning hunger into hope by making food and clean water available to children in need locally, regionally and internationally. Volunteer as a part of a team to pack, seal and box high-protein food packs to be sent where needed. Spots fill quickly. See the online schedule for upcoming public sessions, offered twice each month on Saturdays, or schedule a private or mobile session for a group.

Do you have an artistic spirit and enjoy teaching children? The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is partnering with Liberty Township for a summer art experience at Fort Liberty Playland Park. Assist with set up, teaching kids an arts + crafts activity and cleanup. These family-friendly events are for volunteers ages 13 + older.
