Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in oneself, but at the same time being able to see the gifts in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed is beautiful and rewarding. This month we encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for the impact they’ve made on you. This month we are sharing stories of four women who have made careers out of serving their neighbors. On page 26 we spotlight a local doctor who took her business to new heights this year while influencing future generations of women. We are also recognizing an inspirational Lakota teacher who recently returned from the International Americas Triathlon Para Championship. Then flip to page 32 to get acquainted with the West Chester chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Don’t worry men, next month it’s all about you. Lakota West ninth grade English teacher Kendra Herber has a competitive spirit, determined attitude and the daily discipline needed to achieve big things, and never more so than in the past year, as she added author and triathlete to her life accomplishments. In addition to teaching and being a parent, she recently became a published author, writing a memoir called WHOLE: A Leg Up on Life. Her book discusses her personal story, including how a birth defect resulted in her leg and foot amputation at age two. In promoting the book, she began interviewing Paralympians, eventually meeting one who was a triathlete, Melissa Stockwell. Triathletes compete in swimming, running and bicycling in a competition that tests many different aspects of athletic prowess. “Melissa inspired me to sign up for my first Super Sprint, a really short distance to get my toes wet, and I really started training,” says Kendra. “As I posted some of my times, Melissa sent me a message inviting me up to her training camp in Wisconsin.” Kendra began training in earnest as Melissa saw her potential and pointed out that she could qualify for the Paratriathlon National Championships, which she did. In less than nine months, Kendra prepared to compete in the International Americas Triathlon Para Championship as well, placing third in both events. She continually shaved minutes off her best times in these training-packed months.

“I like the variation of triathlons; even before, I would never do the same workout back to back,” explains Kendra. “It’s humbling, since I still have events where I can challenge myself, like swimming.” Running can be painful and high-impact when using some kinds of medical prosthetics, but with advances in technology, Kendra now has a prosthesis that includes shock absorption for running. Prosthetics are complex and expensive to produce, reducing global access to these helpful devices. This year, Kendra became a Global Mobility Ambassador for the organization Penta Medical Recycling, which recycles components of medical prosthetics to help individuals all over the world get fitted with personalized recycled prosthetics to increase their mobility and independence. “I saw the videos of Penta giving these devices to people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to them free of cost, and their lives completely change,” says Kendra. “I knew I had to be all about it.”

“I think there’s a bigger purpose out there for all of this. I don’t even know who all I’ve helped and inspired, but I know this is where I’m supposed to be.” CONTINUED >

Kendra believes her faith has helped her manage her busy family life, her teaching career and the demanding training regimen of a high-profile athlete. “I think there’s a bigger purpose out there for all of this,” says Kendra. “I don’t even know who all I’ve helped and inspired, but I know this is where I’m supposed to be.”

CHRISTINE M ATAC I C Recently retired after 20 years as a Liberty Township Trustee, Christine Matacic’s résumé reads like a to-do list, with all of the boxes checked. Her plucky spirit spurs those around her to join in, making her a force among volunteers. Christine knows the importance of community. “All of my various activities have given me an opportunity to make a difference and to work with others to accomplish what cannot be done alone,” she explains. Christine is an agent of change and her public service is marked by her goals to keep our town feeling like a place to call home. “I thoroughly enjoy how Liberty Township has maintained open space, parks, hike and bike trails that give us a better quality of life and maintains a country atmosphere, while providing the amenities of a more urban environment,” she says.

M A R GY CONDITT Margy Conditt was the first woman from Butler County to be elected to the Ohio statehouse, serving in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2011-2017, and the first woman to be elected as Liberty Township Trustee, serving 1998-2001. She views her ten years of elected service and lifetime of volunteer work as a practical answer to a need for help. “I have come to realize that our government is run by the people who show up,” Margy says. In retirement, she and husband Dave Bruno are active supporters of local nonprofits. “Serving on the Board of the Boys & Girls Club of West Chester/Liberty has made me aware of the ‘invisible’ need of families in our community,” Margy shares. “We appear to be ‘fine,’ but there are many families in our community who need help from their neighbors.” She continues, “My hope and prayer for the West Chester/Liberty area is that we continue to grow responsibly as a safe, family-friendly community that cares for each other with neighbors helping neighbors.”

Peek behind the scenes in West Chester to spot Barbara Wilson, the 19-year Public Information and Engagement Director for the township. Barbara and her team manage communication and plan township events, from the farmers’ market to concerts on The Square. “You can say, ‘No!’” she whispers in the ear of her younger self.

The best life lessons come from our own experiences, especially when we take time to reflect. Dr. Elizabeth Muennich, dermatologist and local owner at Dermatology & Skin Care Associates, hit pause on her busy life as a physician, business owner, spouse, mother and neighbor to share some wisdom with her younger self. As a youngster, Dr. Muennich pictured herself as a physician, even dressing in scrubs for Halloween. With a PhD in neuroanatomy, a career in neurosurgery originally grabbed her attention, but she opted for dermatology with its better work-life balance. Practicing dermatology allows her to explore both the clinical and cosmetic sides of healthcare, offer a full menu of dermatological services to her patients, complete with trailblazing technology, and still have time to devote to her husband, Josh, and their two children. This Cincinnati native is firmly rooted in West Chester and Liberty, raising her family and growing her business here in her own backyard. When asked what words of advice she would share with her younger self, Dr. Muennich smiles as if rolling down a car window and looking in the rearview mirror on a roadtrip to remember.

SLOW DOWN “I have this amazing ability to get sucked into the hamster wheel,” shares Dr. Muennich. “I tend to get overcommitted—a lot of women do. We are people pleasers. We want to help. You can say, ‘No!’” she whispers in the ear of her younger self. “Although, I’m still working on that,” she adds.

LET YOUR CAREER FIND YOU “I knew I wanted to be in medicine but I didn’t exactly know what route I wanted to take,” reflects Dr. Muennich. “Your career finds you in a bizarre kind of way. When you are a med student, there are a lot of options. It’s hard to make those major decisions. I’d tell myself it’s okay to change track. I thought I was going to be a neurosurgeon but I’m not and I’m happy.”

KEEP HAVING FUN “I had a lot of fun as a kid. I’d tell my younger self to keep doing that!” A child of the 70s, Dr. Muennich’s fun came on wheels. Her childhood roller skating days and later love for martial arts landed her a spot on the Gem City Roller Girls during medical school at Wright State University. Nicknamed “Bad Attitude Barbie,” Muennich skated with the club for more than three years. “That was my stress relief during medical school,” she says. “I had t-shirts and coffee mugs that said, ‘Looks like Barbie—Hits like Ken.’” “I even met my husband boxing,” she continues. “He was teaching a kickboxing class I was taking. He kicked my hand and I talked him into taking me out to dinner.” “Fun is an important part of who I am—especially as a parent,” she says.

BACK TO THE FUTURE Nostalgia aside, Dr. Muennich looks ahead to the adventures life may bring next, ready to tackle them with the sense of humor and strong sense of self that characterizes her and her work. “I’m ready for the next era,” she says with her signature confidence. SURPRISE A SPECIAL WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE WITH A DELICIOUS MOTHER’S DAY QUICHE

INGREDIENTS • 1 pie crust • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cups total of raw spinach, cooked broccoli, cooked asparagus • 7 large eggs • 1¼ cups light cream • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley + thyme • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt • ¼ teaspoon pepper • ¾ cup grated gruyere or white cheddar cheese • ¼ cup grated parmigiano-reggiano

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Press the dough into a 9-inch pie plate, crimping the edges. 3. Place parchment paper into the pie shell and fill with pie weights, uncooked rice or dried beans. Bake until lightly golden, about 25 minutes. If edges start to brown, cover with foil. Remove from oven. 4. In a large bowl, lightly whisk eggs, cream, herbs, nutmeg, salt and pepper. 5. Sprinkle half the cheese on the cooked pie crust, followed by the veggies and then the remaining cheese. Pour the egg mixture over the top and bake until set, about 35 minutes.

Making History Come Alive HOPEWELL CHAPTER OF THE DAR BRINGS EDUCATION, HISTORIC PRESERVATION + PATRIOTISM TO WEST CHESTER

ARTICLE BY LAURA LEAVITT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED A visit to a historic site is so much more than learning important dates or seeing artifacts: it’s all about exploring the stories of those who lived in the past, many of whom might be our own ancestors. For Jan Mauch and other members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), joining the group helped them learn the stories of their own heritage and carry on the inspiring legacies they found in their research. “The service and history aspects got me into it. When I met the women, though, I realized there was so much that we shared,” says Jan Mauch, Regent of West Chester’s Hopewell Chapter of the DAR. She joined in 2009 at another chapter and then was instrumental in the 2019 founding of the Hopewell chapter.

Joining the DAR requires extensive research, since every member must be a direct descendant of someone who contributed to the American Revolution in some way. It doesn’t have to be a soldier or founding father specifically, but the rules are specific and DAR genealogists actively help prospective members find the needed documentation for this process. Once members are officially brought into the organization, they gather monthly to discuss projects as well as hear interesting speakers on a variety of topics. Many of the women then join committees to participate in various acts of service, like writing letters to veterans, collecting donations for the Dove House, USO, Veterans Hospital and Boys and Girls Club, assembling packets for naturalized citizens and more.

“We do a lot of personal and quiet efforts, where the ladies just do projects on their own,” says Jan. “Many of them don’t want to record their service hours because they aren’t in it for recognition.” The ladies of the DAR focus their efforts on three broad categories: education, historic preservation and patriotism. Projects in their first three years include providing copies of the Constitution to local children, placing commemorative wreaths on the graves of local veterans and volunteering as docents at the historic Waldschmidt Homestead. “The history part of the DAR is so fascinating. The state DAR owns the Waldschmidt Homestead, and I’m a docent there and a trustee,” says Jan. “People come in for a tour and they end up sharing things they know, so we learn from the people who come in.” CONTINUED >

One of Jan’s fondest memories is when the chapter hosted a booth at the West Chester Pumpkin Fest. A Constitution Trivia game created by members drew families in and helped them have conversations about history and patriotism. Children were also invited to write encouraging messages through Operation Gratitude, an effort that sends letters and care packages to members of the military. Over 300 people participated in the booth. The Hopewell DAR members are excited for the future and all the ways they hope to serve the West Chester community.

“We’ve learned a lot already, and we’re hoping to continue the things we have begun and then do more with literacy,” says Jan. “We’d also like to increase the amount of student awards we give.” If you have an interest in history and service, the DAR might be a fit for you—a wide variety of women join the Hopewell chapter, and the leadership of the organization loves to help people figure out if they are a good fit for membership.
