Shiver Security Donates 5th K9 to Butler County Sheriff’s Office The Butler County Sheriff’s Office just welcomed a new team member: Boris, a Belgian Malinois, was donated by Shiver Security Systems and partnered with Deputy Tony Wilmer. Both officers will be patrolling in Liberty Township. Boris was imported from Holland and imprinted on narcotic odor and tracking for two months of training. Boris is Shiver’s fifth donated K9. When an opportunity presents itself, there are incredible benefits to committing and making it happen. For the Piening family of Liberty Township, that moment came in July of 2020, when a few different factors were lining up for them to take an unforgettable yearlong road trip. “We had a lightbulb moment when choosing between in-person and virtual school,” said Jaime Piening. “[My husband] Dan said, ‘You’re telling me that the kids can stay in Lakota in their schools and my job just sent me remote? I have a crazy idea. What if we just buy a camper and travel?’” “We had a lot of preparations to make,” pointed out Dan Piening. “We had to buy a camper, sell sedans and rent out the house and we figured everything out while making some maiden voyages that summer to see how it’d all work.” They began by heading north to Michigan and New York, then circled down the East Coast and spent as much time in the warmer states as possible during the wintertime. Their trip took on a fairly comfortable rhythm, with travel happening on most Sundays, settling them into a new campsite for the week. If the children were able to finish their school tasks early on a given afternoon, they’d have the option to explore local attractions, and the whole family set out on Friday evening and Saturday to see the local sites. They saw at least 14 national parks, multiple historic sites and a variety of other landmark locations from Niagara Falls to the Grand Canyon.

The Pienings had a relatively roomy camper, 37 feet long, but it was really their ability to get along that helped them enjoy the many stops on their route. The family of five–Dan, Jaime and their three kids, Elle, Daniel and Cami– also had their family dog Bailey along, who helped everyone feel more at home. “I’m really close with my siblings, and it was pretty easy to be with each other a lot,” explained Cami, now in second grade. Along the way, the weekly routine was interrupted by some moments of true serendipity, or ‘divine appointments’ as Dan and Jaime called them. These were experiences that they could never plan for. Just by being on the road and willing to adjust on the fly, they were able to experience great things. Take, for instance, how Jaime’s sister coaches college basketball and they were in Texas at the perfect time to see a tournament game. Or how they pulled into a campsite on South Padre Island while they were still in Texas only to realize their timing worked out for them to watch a SpaceX test launch. Other timing was beautiful because of the learning it empowered. When passing through Alabama, the Pienings were

able to spend Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Selma, getting a real-life taste of Civil Rights movement history. Their Lakota teachers learned that they could bring in what the Piening children were uncovering in their travels and make it part of virtual learning. “I’d give facts to my class about the place where I was, and everyone would guess, like ‘Where in the world is Elle?’” said sixth grader Elle. “I could get on Zoom calls and people could see me at forts or even in the Kennedy Space Center.” The siblings didn’t even see sharing a single room for a year as very difficult. Third grader Daniel pointed out that being in the camper didn’t feel that much different from being at home once he and his siblings were able to spread out around the camper and their campsites. That’s the fun thing about spontaneous adventures: when you never know what new discoveries will come, rising to the occasion in the moment can be a real bonding experience. The Pienings learned that and many other valuable lessons with more than 20,000 miles and 26 states in their rearview mirror, returning home ready to see those they cared about here in Ohio and tell them about all they learned.

Listening and sharing stories of past experiences and memories is an ancient method for bonding, especially during the cold months. After all, with fewer outdoor events and a slower rhythm of life, the winter is the best time to take a moment to reflect and share with those who matter to us. It was in this spirit that “Miss Mary” Raffel, beloved former parks and recreation director at West Chester Township, created the Armchair Program in 1991. While she has since passed away, her programming lives on as a valuable resource for camaraderie, fun and learning. The concept is fairly simple: about six times per winter, residents and friends gather to hear a traveler share stories, photographs, and other mementos of a journey to a far-off place. Over the 30 years of the program, more than 150 people have shared their experiences, and the attendees have collectively “visited” every single continent from the comfort of an armchair here in West Chester. “People who aren’t able to travel or who want to get ideas for future travel love to come to these events,” says Laura Groff, the longtime Township administrative assistant who coordinates the Armchair Program.

“Miss Mary was always aspiring to give people larger experiences through the Armchair Program, and she also enjoyed being able to ‘travel’ herself this way.” Part of the longevity of the program comes from a regular following that also produces speakers for future sessions. “Most of our speakers just approach me at a program and offer to do a program about somewhere they’ve been,” says Laura. “We’ve had some people who’ve done programs for years, and others who say they have a friend they’ll connect me to. Word of mouth does a lot to get us more speakers.” Director of Public Information & Engagement Barb Wilson recalls presenting about a family trip to Switzerland with her young children many years ago. “It was such a good experience with my boys, sharing the slides with memories of our trip,” says Barb. “We got to hear the questions that the audience had, and I think it made my kids feel special that they’d done something that people wanted to hear about.” A lot of the programs are made special not just about having an exotic destination but by having a personal and specific story that engages the audience. “Anyone can go to the Grand Canyon, but if someone took a special mule ride down and spent the night in the canyon, that makes the story much different and more vivid,” says Barb. Andrew Reeder, Public Information Coordinator for West Chester Township, has created an interactive map online at WestChesterOH.org/government/parks/armchair-program that allows viewers to explore the many past destinations of Armchair Programs. If you’ve been somewhere that isn’t noted on the map, you might be a good candidate to speak! While the program has found a loyal following among local senior citizens, the potential to learn something new appeals to quite a lot of audiences. “This can be a great family-friendly program; a family can look at the topics and bring kids who are working on a report or learning about the place being featured,” says Barb. “We always encourage community members to explore our programming and get involved. We hope more people will find this program and enjoy it.” Programs are typically held on select Friday nights during January, February and March at 7 p.m. in West Chester Township Hall, 9113 Cincinnati-Dayton Road. Promising new possibilities have emerged in cancer treatment in recent years, providing new hope and opportunities for healing. Choosing the best next steps requires both a caring and supportive medical team and access to the best treatments available. At The Jewish Hospital – Mercy Health Cincinnati Cancer and Cellular Therapy Center (3CTC), choosing and pursuing cancer treatment is personalized. Staff align the treatment plans toward protecting the patient and improving outcomes at every step. Diane Shapiro, RN and Transplant Coordinator, has worked with The Jewish Hospital Cancer Center for more than 27 years. She states,“I love the team approach we have. It’s not just the doctor, we have an amazing group that includes nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, a dietitian, a social worker and a psychologist. It truly takes a village for a successful outcome for the patients and family.” In 2017, the first chimeric antigen receptor t-cell immunotherapy drugs (CAR-T) were approved. Dr. James Essell, Medical Director of the 3CTC at The Jewish Hospital, says, “As soon as we heard about CAR-T, even when it was still in clinical trials, we thought it was important for our patients to have access to this potentially life-saving therapy. We’re the first in the region to have this for adults.”

WHAT IS CAR-T THERAPY? The first CAR T-cell immunotherapy was approved as a treatment for leukemia in 2017, and since then, CAR-T protocols have been approved for some types of lymphoma and multiple myeloma. CAR-T begins with collecting lymphocyte cells called T-cells from the patient. These cells are genetically modified in a lab to specifically attack the cancer. The cells are grown in the lab, and they are then infused back into the

patient’s blood. The modified T-cells attach to the malignant cancer cells and kill them. The CAR-T continues to multiply and expand in the body to fight the cancer. For more details visit LLS.org.

WHO RECEIVES CAR-T AND HOW DOES IT HELP? Dr. Essell explains that CAR-T is a targeted form of cancer treatment called cellular therapy, which helps the body to attack cancer itself, rather than having chemotherapy or radiation doing the primary cancer-fighting work. CAR-T immunotherapy is currently only considered in candidates whose cancer has not gone into remission during two or more previous chemotherapy attempts. Many of these patients would have previously had few, if any, options for continuing treatment effectively. While research is ongoing, at least one study shows more than a third of cancer cases going into long-term remission after the treatment. Dr. Essell has reason to believe that cured patient percentages will rise even further due to continued innovation in the world of cellular therapy.

THE FUTURE OF CAR-T Multiple CAR-T therapies have been approved by the FDA and the early successes have prompted many new trials to provide CAR-T for other cancer types, since each treatment is specific to the particular kind of cancer. 3CTC is part of ongoing innovation in cancer care. They are opening a new patient infusion center in April 2022 that will allow them to expand their capacity and do even more in the fight against highly resistant cancers.
