When the new season comes knocking, greet it with a ring of colorful spring flowers on your front door. We turn to local creative mind Julie Abrams, owner of Front Porch Creative, for step-by-step directions for a do-it-yourself wreath that even beginners can put together in a short, spring afternoon.

Find a Happy Place Find a workspace that motivates you. The front porch is Julie’s favorite place to create, thus the name of her business. She earned a reputation for bringing innovative ideas to fruition as a Lakota mom, philanthropist and while working in marketing and events at The West Chester • Liberty Chamber Alliance. Julie started her business in March 2020, and now spends her days marketing, planning events and making beautiful things. “I do my best work on my front porch,” Julie says. “It’s my inspiration spot.”

Keep it Simple Julie finds inspiration in discovering new uses for old items. “I really like urban styles and repurposing furniture,” she says. Pinterest is one of her go-to apps for igniting ideas, but many of Julie’s creative visions come at night. “I keep a notepad by my bed,” she shares. “When ideas come, I sketch them out, even if it’s 3 a.m.!”

Sourcing Supplies Don’t be intimidated by choosing flowers. Julie suggests selecting a small bouquet that represents the season. Look for a mix of sizes and colors, including leafy greenery in various shades and textures. Choose two or three larger flowers to become a focal point. Plan to spend a little extra to get better quality flowers that look realistic but will tolerate the weather. “Watch the sales at local craft stores,” Julie advises. “A few stems can really add up. I use every little piece.”

Step One Start with a rustic grapevine wreath. Trim the stems with wire cutters and arrange a base layer of greenery in a couple of shades, allowing some of the grapevine to show through. When you have the leafy greens where you like them, tuck them into the branches of the wreath.

Step Two Don’t be intimidated by floral design. Trust your eye and arrange the stems to your liking. Begin with the largest, focal flowers, then add smaller stems of florals around them in a balanced manner. Use hot glue to attach them to the wreath and hold them in place.

Step Three Make a bow. Measure the ribbon into five, 22-inch strips and staple twice to form five rings. Cut one 11-inch strip and staple it twice into a smaller ring; set aside. Cut three 6-inch pieces of wire. Turn the five rings on their sides and flatten their centers, doubling the ribbon.

Step Four Pinch the ribbons together at their centers and stack in alternating directions. Wrap wire around the middle to bind. Add the small ring (unflattened, stapled side down) to the top with more wire. Fluff the bow. Tie it to the wreath with a long ribbon, leaving two tails as a finishing touch.

COUNTRY COOKING LEARN HOW TO CREATE A FEAST OF CLASSIC COUNTRY COMFORT FOODS ARTICLE BY MICHELLE MOODY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAUL VERSLUIS One way to make your house feel and smell like a home is with a delicious, homecooked meal. On a chilly March evening, nothing beats country comfort foods. This feast includes buttermilk brined fried chicken, roasted heirloom carrots and peach bread pudding. Round out your meal with salad, bread and a delicious cocktail for a memorable family meal.

Buttermilk Brined Fried Chicken INGREDIENTS FOR DRIED SPICE MIX • 2 tablespoons white pepper • 1 teaspoon ground mustard • 5 teaspoons paprika • 2 teaspoons fresh black pepper • 2 tablespoons garlic powder • 2 teaspoons dried oregano

2 teaspoons cayenne 1 teaspoon celery salt ½ teaspoon dried thyme 4 teaspoons onion powder Palm kosher salt

ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS • Whole cut up chicken or 2 bone-in breasts, 2 thighs and 2 drumsticks • 4 cups buttermilk • 1 bunch fresh sage • ½ of dry spice mixture from above

2 cups flour ½ cup cornstarch 1 tablespoon baking powder 4 cups shortening

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Mix dried spice ingredients together. 2. Mix half the dried spice mixture with buttermilk to make the marinade. Place chicken in large storage bag and pour marinade over top. Add fresh sage and store in refrigerator for up to 24 hours. 3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a baking rack with a sheet pan for raw chicken and one for cooked chicken. 4. Whisk the flour, cornstarch, baking powder and remaining dried spice mix together. 5. Heat shortening to 350 degrees, preferably in a cast iron Dutch oven. 6. Pull chicken out of buttermilk mixture and let drip. One piece at a time, coat chicken firmly in flour mixture and set on raw chicken rack. 7. Place 2 or 3 pieces of chicken in oil and cook 3-5 minutes per side. Place on cooked chicken rack. Put cooked chicken in oven to complete cooking for 15 minutes. Roasted Heirloom Carrots INGREDIENTS • 1 ½ pounds heirloom carrots • 1 tablespoon olive oil • Kosher salt • 2 tablespoons honey

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. 2. Rinse and dry the carrots well with a kitchen towel. 3. Toss the carrots, olive oil and ½ teaspoon kosher salt on a baking sheet. Arrange in a single layer. 4. Roast carrots in the oven, turning once, until tender and slightly browned, approximately 15 minutes. 5. Warm 2 tablespoons honey in the microwave for 20-30 seconds. 6. Plate the carrots and drizzle with the warm honey. Sprinkle with more salt if desired.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Cut bread into 1-inch cubes. Dice peaches into medium sized pieces. 3. Place peaches, white sugar, and butter in saucepan. 4. Cook until sugar is dissolved and peaches are soft. Set a few of the peach pieces aside to use for topping at the end. 5. Mix all other ingredients together. 6. Spray a 9x13-inch baking pan and add peach mixture with brioche pieces and then add milk mixture. 7. Bake for 45 minutes. Let cool for 20 minutes before cutting. 8. Spoon into individual serving bowls, top with a few of the peach pieces reserved for topping, then add a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

When Charlene and John Busby began building their dream home in the Carriage Hill neighborhood, they knew just who to call to make their design visions come true. Longtime friend and interior designer Helen Wright at Interiors Plus in Mason had worked on previous homes for them, and Charlene knew she’d capture her style to a T. Charlene had some specific asks, from integrating art by her son-in-law, to maintaining a neutral and elegant palette throughout the home. She also wanted to ensure her grandkids would be comfortable in the space when they visited, so they took that into account too. Helen went to work designing their dream home, and didn’t disappoint. Charlene describes the decor in her previous home as Tuscan and traditional, but in her new home, she wanted a neutral look, which she felt would better suit the larger home with an open floor plan. Her main room features creams, beiges and other light colors that make for a more spacious and clean look. “The neutrals throughout the house made it soft, and we can add whatever colors we want since she likes to add for the seasons,” Helen explains, as she also decorates their home for the holidays.

Helen worked to feature Charlene’s son-in-law’s art in high visibility areas so that the family could enjoy those pieces, which add color and vibrancy to the neutral palette. The artwork was inspired by photos from their European travels, which he turned into abstract artwork. Helen also used indoor plants to liven up the space with touches of green, and to add sophistication and elegance. One of Charlene’s most loved touches is the hood above the kitchen stove, flanked by open shelving, where she displays some of her favorite items. Large cream lanterns draw the eye to the kitchen island, where she enjoys entertaining family and friends. Helen didn’t forget about the six grandkids, designing a space in the basement especially for them. “They have a special room for them to hook up their games, and we play games during Christmas or whenever they come. We call it the Game Room. It has a poker table and it’s decorated with dominoes and all types of game stuff,” Charlene says. The room could also be used as a fifth bedroom, if needed. Helen’s goals in the game room design were to provide ample storage and choose furniture that’s comfortable for the grandkids to enjoy.

The porch is another space Charlene utilizes for entertaining, which Helen designed with neutral wicker furniture and a gray and white rug. The television and fireplace make it an enjoyable area during many seasons, with abundant seating for when their large family visits. The master bedroom continues the theme of elegance and luxury, as well as the neutral palette, with a stunning chandelier, artwork above the headboard and a large rug spanning the area. There is also a well-lit sitting area near the windows with floor-to-ceiling curtains that help the couple truly utilize the whole bedroom. Gold and bronze accents level up the decor throughout the home. Helen was careful not to over-decorate. “It is a big house with larger spaces, so you have to be careful not to clutter it up,” she says. Charlene hopes that others will consider working with an interior designer like Helen. “Just talk to her from your heart—tell her what you want, and she will find a way,” Charlene advises.

If the walls at 6491 Cincinnati Dayton Road could speak, they would have stories to tell. Built in 1859, it is only fitting that the historic structure is home to SpotOn Productions, a full-service video production company that’s in the business of telling stories. The warm and welcoming house is an inspiring place to work. Owner and Founder Mike Murray started the family business 24 years ago. He now works alongside spouse Kerry Murray, vice president, and their son, Ian Murray, president. They moved the business’ hub from their Liberty Township home to the charming row house three years ago. The beautifully maintained home is surprisingly spacious. Ian’s office is in what was once the living room. Its centerpiece is a wood burning fireplace that is original to the home. A first-floor former bedroom houses Kerry’s office, recently refreshed with the removal of decades of wallpaper. “We were looking for a place with a boutique feel and fun, creative atmosphere. When we saw this place, this was it,” explains Kerry. “It matches who we are.” “Clients love coming here and so do we,” says Mike.

Each room is a showcase, bridging the past and future. “It feels right to take something old and build something new in it,” says Ian. “We are one of the oldest still-standing houses in Liberty Township, with some of the fastest internet,” says Kerry. The house came with a set of historical ledgers, filled with the daily accounting of expenses and income for the property. “Some of the stories are from the early 1900s, and say things like, ‘Sold 1 dozen eggs, 38 cents,’” Mike shares. “Liberty Township has a great history. The growth from a little farming area to what it is today is incredible.” “Here in this space, we’ve been given the opportunity to grow, get better and bring great people together,” says Kerry. At one end is a conference table with chairs, at the other is a comfortable sectional sofa; both include large screens for viewing videos. 02 // COLLABORATIVE ZONES Three bedrooms on the second floor were converted to open floor plan offices. The SpotOn team and clients meet in huddle spaces, meeting spots around the home in a variety of seating sizes and configurations, where they get their heads together to create. 03 // CONTEMPORARY AMENITIES A professional highlight of the property is an onsite, state-of-the-art studio, located across the parking area in a remodeled carpenter’s workshop. The team also films in and around the historic home using its rooms and specially painted walls as backgrounds. The airy kitchen is a favorite shoot location.
