New Year New Look
January 2022 PUBLISHER
Michelle Moody | Michelle.Moody@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR
Tera Michelson | Tera.Michelson@CityLifestyle.com
It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. West Chester + Liberty Lifestyle is using this new year as an opportunity to refresh our look with a few small changes. We’re still full of the same great stories, photos and local business connections you love. Hopefully you’ve visited us online at CityLifestyle.com/ WestChesterAndLiberty. There we have many of our past issues, a robust business directory and even more stories and events from around here and from other cities, too. Since “Lifestyle” extends beyond just publications and in more than our townships, our overarching name has changed from Lifestyle Publications to City Lifestyle. We’re now in over 100 towns around the country including cities as close as Mason and Loveland, so changing our name better represents our presence both online and in print in cities and townships around the country. Our readers have been asking us to include captions on our “Good Times” photos, so those will be added in this section that we’re now calling “City Scenes.” Starting with this issue we’ll be able to combine multiple events on the same page so we can showcase even more celebrations around our towns. Our “Calendar” section is now “Events” and we’ve added a new section called “Business Monthly” that will spotlight a few businesses or interesting local information each month. Scan the QR codes in this section and "Local Experiences" to read more! You can find more events and local news items on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/ WestChesterAndLibertyLifestyle. As you flip through our pages this month, you’ll see stories to help get 2022 off to a healthy start. The cover story introduces you to some of West Chester’s newest residents, the Porter Family, who have competed in multiple Olympics. If they inspire you to start training, turn to page 18 to read more about how to build strength at the newest gym in West Chester. We also went grocery shopping with a local health and wellness expert to learn how we can make small changes to our eating and shopping habits to get healthier this year. This is just some of what we have in store for you this month and throughout the year. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

STARTING STRENGTH CINCINNATI BREAKS DOWN THE KEY PARTS OF FITNESS
18
G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS
STRATEGY FOR STRENGTH When you walk into the West Chester studio of Starting Strength Cincinnati, you’ll see nine identical racks and platforms and screens with plans for the day’s workout. If you’re used to a gym with lots of machines, you might be surprised. However, the coaches, apprentices and owner Luke Schroeder are practitioners of a formula for strength training that works every time, and it’s at the center of their work. “It all began with a book, Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, by Mark Rippetoe in 2005,” says Luke. “It discusses why strength is the single most important physical adaptation we’ve got, and how it helps us do everything else better in our lives.” The book takes that principle and develops, in deep detail, how a certain set of exercises with the barbell—the squat, deadlift, overhead press, bench press and the power clean— make the body work as a system in a way that builds strength throughout the body, not just in isolated body parts. When Rippetoe’s book gained recognition as the definitive guide of its kind, he and other gym owners began using it as a manual for coaching people who wanted to get stronger. Now, official Starting Strength gyms are popping up all
over the United States, with Starting Strength Cincinnati as the ninth gym of its kind to open. Workouts at a Starting Strength gym are programmed and coached. You start with an introductory session where the credentialed coach teaches you the form and technique of movements that you’ll use, while establishing baselines of strength. Coaching sessions are typically three times a week, each session attuned to where you are in your strength journey. Starting Strength is shown to work for all ages, male and female, and you’re likely to see that diversity in a given group coaching session. “Strength training is especially important as we age,” says Luke. “A lot of our clients are in the 65 and older category. There’s a 97-yearold woman who trains at Starting Strength Boston. In that age group, with 90 days on our program, the 65+ groups are stronger than the 18-45 age group is on day one.” The Starting Strength coaching credential is the most rigorous in the industry, with studies in human physiology, physics, how to coach the lifts and how to develop the individualized programming. It culminates in challenging final exams that test both knowledge and effective coaching.

In the process of an intensive thrice-weekly workout, friendships form in the gym, driven by the excitement of seeing progress. “It really becomes a community, since while there’s nothing in here that’s dangerous, strength training can be hard, and there’s a bond that comes with doing things that aren’t easy as a group,” says Luke. The Starting Strength pricing strategy is simple, with a structured rate per session, billed monthly. They avoid cancellation fees, joining fees and contracts because they fully believe their results will keep clients coming back. Starting Strength Cincinnati breaks down the key parts of fitness while building up strength and relationships. START STRONG Through January, the grand-opening discount is $24 per session for the 3-times-per-week program. Register online for their open houses, Saturdays at 11:30 a.m., to see the gym and meet and observe the team. Cincinnati.StartingStrengthGyms.com

HEALTHY HABITS COACH: NOUN

OPTIMIST, ENCOURAGER, LIFE + HEALTH COACH
Lindsey Bonadonna’s eyes light up in the produce section. As a Healthy Habits Coach, fresh foods get her all fired up. Lindsey is certified as a Health Coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and also carries international credentials in gut health and as a yoga instructor. As a busy mom of two and a woman with health issues and food sensitivities, she knows the challenge of making healthy lifestyle changes firsthand. Many of us take on resolutions for healthier eating in the new year, but find ourselves slipping into old habits as we push our carts through the grocery aisles. We took a trip to a local Kroger store with Lindsey to get tips on small changes we can make at the grocery store to make a big impact. We learned (and laughed) a lot. Here are Lindsey’s tips for shopping and eating for better health.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Shopping for your health does not require a specialty grocer. You don’t have to blow your budget or drive across town to a gourmet supermarket; your favorite local store is full of nourishing, accessible choices. “If it is not accessible, you are probably not going to do it, especially for the long term” Lindsey says with furrowed eyebrows.
CROWD IT OUT Fill your cart (and life) with fresh foods to crowd out other, more processed foods that may not make your body feel as well. Make gradual changes that accumulate to progress. “The more fresh foods that we can include in our day to day, versus more processed foods, the more it adds to our health,” Lindsey says. “If you are filling up with the fresh foods, there’s naturally less space for the other stuff.” “For example, if you are eating 10 cookies a day and you replace just one of those cookies with a piece of fruit, that’s a reason to celebrate,” she adds. “The habit will continue to grow.” CONTINUED >

SELF-CELEBRATION Have a party in your mind each time you make a healthy choice. Did you reach for a glass of water instead of a soda at lunch? Cue the confetti! You are flooding your brain with dopamine, a feelgood hormone, each time you celebrate yourself, building habits that help your body, mind and soul sing. “When we celebrate the healthy changes we are making, we are rewiring our brain’s neural pathways to want to repeat those healthy choices, which is a fun, effective way to build a habit, versus guilting ourselves into submission,” Linsdey explains.
FUN-SIZE CHANGES Focus on making a series of small changes to get to a long-term, sustainable, vibrant lifestyle, rather than completely depriving yourself of something you love. “This is why my company is called Kale and Cake—it’s important to have both,” says Lindsey. “Changing your lifestyle is not an all or nothing situation. We’re not looking to build healthy lifestyles in just 30 days—no quick fixes when we’re looking to live a life built to last a lifetime. We have to look at all aspects of our lives and find what works best for you and what helps your body.”
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Pay attention to your body’s response to your choice of foods. If it doesn’t make you feel good, get curious. “Get curious about why you are making the decisions you are,” Lindsey encourages. “When you are reaching for something out of habit, take a pause and identify the reason. Are you really hungry for that or are you being driven by your emotions? You can still eat whatever it is, but going into it with awareness is really powerful.”
WHAT’S IN YOUR CART?
— A look inside the shopping cart of local healthy habits coach, Lindsey Bonadonna of Kale and Cake.
AVOCADOS
Add this healthy fat to eggs, salads and sandwiches.
WALNUTS
A handful of raw, unsalted nuts is a quick and easy go-to snack with protein.
SALAD DRESSING
Look for the fresh, refrigerated dressings with fewer preservatives in the produce section.
OAT MILK
Oat milk is a yummy alternative to traditional dairy with a similar texture.
MADE GOOD GRANOLA BARS
Kids (and adults!) love these chocolate chip bars filled with natural ingredients.
FRESH FRUIT + VEG
Fill your cart with a variety of colors of fresh foods to crowd out processed foods.
WHOLE-GRAIN BREAD
Switch to a hearty whole-grain bread for a fun-size change in your diet.
HOUSE PLANT
Add something that makes you smile to your food-prep area.
Special thanks to The Kroger Company.
READ NUTRITION LABELS Check the nutrition labels for foods that have shorter ingredient lists with items you can pronounce. Look for nutrient dense options. Don’t be afraid of carbohydrates. “Carbohydrates get a bad rap,” Lindsey says. “Carbs are food for our brains. Instead of cutting them out completely, take a closer look at the quality of the carbohydrates you are eating regularly. Try to reach for the item with the highest nutrient quality, like a whole-grain bread with no hard-to-pronouce ingredients over white bread with bleached flour.” Lindsey is interested in the long-term results that come from taking life one step at a time, looking at yourself from all angles: body, mind and soul. “Being healthy doesn’t mean having to give up everything you love,” Lindsey points out.

The Olympians Tiffany + Jeff Porter Talk Track on the International Stage, Parenting and Moving to West Chester ARTICLE BY LAURA LEAVITT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEN KALTMAN— WEST CHESTER CORPORATE PHOTOGRAPHY
When you get to know your neighbors, you may discover that they’ve done some truly remarkable things. If your West Chester neighbors are Tiffany and Jeff Porter, you may come to realize that the university administrator or local pharmacist that you thought you knew are actually lauded athletes who have competed in multiple Olympics in track and field. Tiffany recalls that her track career truly started like so many of us start running. “I would race my two older brothers in the street in Ypsilanti [Michigan] where I grew up. They went on to

have college football careers,” she says. “So we’d race, but I was always just a little quicker than other people.” Middle school and high school track honed Tiffany’s natural talent and after winning multiple major national awards for her skills, she accepted a scholarship to run track and field at University of Michigan. Meanwhile, across the country in New Jersey, Jeff Porter was convinced that football was his path, and only a coach pointing out that he needed winter and spring sports to stay in shape pulled him over to the world of track.

“There’s something about the hurdle race that is addicting, and you want to get better at it, so I dedicated myself to the all-season training regimen, and I got good really quick,” says Jeff. He also received a scholarship to the University of Michigan. Their worlds collided Jeff’s junior year at Michigan when a new Freshman track star named Tiffany friended him on Facebook. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight, but the people around them just knew. “She couldn’t stand me because she thought I was arrogant, but she was just a Freshman! She needed to know this was Jeff Porter’s track!” laughed Jeff. “I wanted to know who this boisterous guy was!” says Tiffany. “My coaches saw us and said, ‘You’re going to marry that guy.’ We started dating my freshman year and we’ve been together pretty much ever since.” Their relationship has carried them through many different seasons of life, from college to their professional careers where they were racing competitively in all the world’s major championships. Jeff competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics for the United States in 110- meter hurdles, and due to her dual citizenship, Tiffany competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics for Great Britain in 100-meter hurdles. “I was content with what I’d accomplished on the track, and had mentally retired, and I was ready for a new chapter when my daughter was born in 2019,” says Tiffany. “But making the decision to come back to the track with Jeff’s support, it was like the icing on the cake, and it gave me a new perspective.” Tiffany talked it over with Jeff, who was coaching Tiffany’s sister for the Tokyo Olympics at the time. Jeff agreed to coach Tiffany with their baby girl by their side. “She has basically been raised at the track—there were feedings between workouts,” says Jeff. “She is Mommy’s biggest fan, and I tell Tiffany that you can show the world that having a baby doesn’t stop you from continuing to follow your dream.” “This all contributed to me being able to get an Indoor Medal and then make the
