The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. Growing up, my family spent a lot of time making things together at Christmas. My sister and I would help my mom bake dozens of different cookies and desserts. My favorite to eat (but least favorite to spend hours rolling) were the buckeyes—those delicious chocolate-covered peanut butter balls that celebrate our Ohio pride. We would also string long strands of popcorn and cranberries together to hang on our tree. I would always forget that the popcorn was purely for decorations, so it was totally plain. I would shove a handful into my mouth only to be met with a bland and boring surprise. But when we finished making our decorations, my mom would make a fresh batch of popcorn with LOTS of butter and salt for us to snack on while watching a Christmas movie on VHS (remember those?). Our traditions have changed, but making things together has stayed a part of my family’s Christmas customs. This month we share two unique ways to get crafty together this holiday season. There are so many fun things to see and do in the month of December that we couldn’t fit them all into just one story. Flip to page 16 for details on seven local holiday shows and then page 34 to learn about all the fun Middletown has planned for their annual Holiday Whopla. Then turn to our calendar section for even more events, like the return of the Holiday Takeover on the Square. This issue is overflowing with seasonal fun for our readers to enjoy. No matter what you celebrate, we hope that your December is special and that you have the opportunity to spend time with family and friends.

Jazz Trombonist Spencer Merk Releases Debut Album Local musician Spencer Merk released his debut recording, Last Place in a Bear Race, in November. A graduate of University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music (CCM) and Lakota West High School, Spencer’s band features another local, Christian Paradiso, CCM and Lakota East grad, playing tenor saxophone. Lakota’s Ben Dougherty Named 2022 Presidential Cybersecurity Education Award Winner Lakota Cyber Academy teacher Ben Dougherty has been given the 2022 Presidential Cybersecurity Education Award by the U.S. Department of Education. Earlier this year, Ben was honored with the inaugural Educator Award from Cyber.org for his work in launching the Lakota Cyber Academy in 2019. Celebrate the Winter Season With These Live Holiday Performances West Chester and Liberty Township are absolutely beautiful in the wintertime. Colorful stringed lights line the Square at Union Center Pavilion. Dark green fir trees decorate the streets of Liberty Center. Fresh snow sits upon the Voice of America hill ushering happy sled riders up and down the mound. The scenes are picture-perfect as if they were pulled straight out of a holiday movie. There is always something else that adds to the area’s holiday charm: live shows featuring seasonal music, dance and theater. This year, as the temperatures drop and cheer is on the rise, catch these exciting performances to embrace the holiday spirit.

Lakota’s High School performance groups share the holiday spirit this winter through an array of festive concerts. Community members are invited to join Lakota East and West Bands for performances that will showcase instrumental renditions of their holiday favorites. The Lakota East and West Choirs will also perform this December, singing classical and modern pieces sure to have the audience caroling along.

Get into the holiday spirit this winter by experiencing the heartwarming musical Miracle on 34th Street at Middletown’s Sorg Opera House. Based on the 1947 movie, the show is an uplifting classic, enjoyable for all members of the family featuring fan-favorite songs, including “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” The show is sure to leave audiences merry and bright by the end of this threehour special.

For one night only, the Fitton Center Family Theater welcomes musical group “Vince and the Fellas” for their performance of holiday hits from famous Motown stars. With seasonal music from artists including the Jackson 5 and Stevie Wonder, the show will feature an 11-piece band with four vocalists and a horn section. This classic and festive Motown music will get the whole family dancing into the holiday.

December is typically full of parties and BYOB get-togethers. The stores are overflowing with seasonal beers, so it can be difficult to know which six-pack to bring to the celebration. The one with the most Christmassy bottle? The one with the funniest name? It seems an impossible task to choose without tasting them all. No worries, we did the hard work for you this season. Four friends gathered to pop the top on six holiday beers to see which would bubble to the top of our Christmas lists. One thing that became clear is that everyone likes something different–none of us had the same favorite. Holiday crafts have grown up since the days of making reindeer out of finger-painted handprints. Quilling has become a popular way to get creative year round. Quilling is an art form using coiled paper strips to create a variety of colorful designs. “Quilling is relaxing and rewarding. It is a stress-free way to be creative,” reflects artist Terri Riddle. Terri will be collaborating with The Arts Alliance to teach the basics of quilling in a holiday-themed class on December 6. Terri first connected with The Arts Alliance when she displayed her paintings at one of their art shows. Since then, she has shared her love of teaching a variety of art mediums to all ages through the Alliance’s many classes and camps. She recently became interested in creating art with paper and her intrigue with quilling began. “Quilling is more fun art than fine art. It is the most beginner-friendly art I have ever done,” Terri relates. “Everyone is born creative. Express your unique creativity,” she encourages. Find paper quilling tools at most craft stores or online. Choose the colors of paper quilling strips needed for the project. Begin by inserting one end of a paper strip into the slot of the quilling tool. Twirl the paper tightly around the tool until the entire paper strip is used, forming a coil.

Gently remove the coiled paper from the tool. Place the coil in the desired space on the circle sizer tool. Allow the coiled paper to fill the circle. Once set to size, carefully remove the coil. Tweezers may help when handling the coil.

To secure the coil, a pply a tiny amount of glue to the inside end flap of the coil. Hold the glued end in place for twenty seconds. Once secure, the coil can remain circular or pinched into a variety of shapes depending on the project.

LIGHT DISPLAY The Light Up Middletown drive-through light display was a long-running institution even before the Holiday Whopla, but a trip to Middletown is even more fun if you can combine the amazing Smith Park light show with a merry meander downtown. “It is extremely emotional for our team to hear visitors and citizens comment on the wonderful time they are having and how beautiful the city looks,” says Avinne.

Salt Dough Recipe

Step One

MAKES ABOUT 12 ORNAMENTS

Mix together flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint. Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Finally, remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry.

Salt dough is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces and packages around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments became popular in the 1970s, but the process dates all the way back to ancient Egyptian times. Salt dough has made a comeback in recent years and for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for generations to come. Follow our easy instructions to make your own salt dough creations this holiday season.

To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough to ½—¼ inch thick.

Step Three Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread the twine after baking.

Place ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake.

Step Five Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint or Sharpie markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with an acrylic seal. Let dry, flip and spray the other side.

Step Six Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole. Hang from tree or add to gift boxes as gift tags.

1. Preheat oven to 350º and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners. Prepare red velvet cake batter according to box directions. Divide batter among liners and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely. Break 4 cupcakes into small crumbs. Save remaining cakes for another use. 2. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add heavy cream and vanilla and beat until stiff peaks form. 3. Line a large baking sheet with parchment. Using a small cookie scoop, scoop cream cheese mixture into balls and place on prepared baking sheet. Transfer to the freezer to chill, 1 hour. 4. Roll balls in red velvet cake crumbs until fully coated, then return to prepared baking sheet. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need.
