R E AC H O U T L A KOTA A N D T H E C O M M U N I T Y F O U N DAT I O N Celebrating 20 Years of Partnership with a $200,000 Grant

IAN MURRAY | PRESIDENT OF SPOTON PRODUCTIONS Mismatched chairs were circled in the center of the lobby at Reach Out Lakota as board members took their seats for their monthly meeting. It was the only space in the building not stacked with shelves of food staples and boxes of donations to unpack. With notes balanced on their laps, the group discussed plans for the upcoming food distribution – a regular event that they all had an active role in executing. That evening in 2010 was Ian Murray’s first meeting as a newly appointed board member for Reach Out Lakota. At 26, Murray was already a familiar face in the community through his family’s business, SpotOn Productions, and his involvement with the West Chester/Liberty Chamber Alliance. Now he was jumping into the nonprofit world. That evening at Reach Out Lakota, the grass-roots atmosphere struck Murray as an asset; an organization where hands-on work and local support helped real families in West Chester and Liberty Townships. And as Reach Out Lakota approached its 20th anniversary, he saw nothing but potential for its future impact in the community. “I liked the fact that it was so locally based, only serving West Chester and Liberty Township,” says Murray. “And it’s 100% community-supported, one of the biggest points of pride, all individual donations. You don’t think of this area as having a lot of poverty, but like every community, there are pockets of it…the hope is to help meet people where they are when they need it.” For the next nine years, six as Board President, Ian helped Reach Out Lakota grow their impact in the community, initiating annual fundraising events and expanding services to include a summer corporate food drive and additional clothing offerings.

During this same time, Murray was invited to join another board of a local, grass-roots nonprofit, the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty, to fill a spot reserved for a local young professional. He was familiar with the Community Foundation, partly from the grant support the organization had provided to Reach Out Lakota. In fact, the connection between the two organizations ran much deeper. After the 1999 Woodbridge Apartment fire, local volunteers who would later create the Community Foundation came alongside Reach Out Lakota to help mobilize support for the dozens of displaced families. A year later, the first grant that the Community Foundation awarded went to Reach Out Lakota. “There’s always been a very strong connection between Reach Out Lakota and the Community Foundation,” says Murray. “Reach Out Lakota is a safety net, and then you have the Community Foundation that is the funding backbone for nonprofits in the community helping with ongoing support and big projects, too.” Over the past 20 years, the partnership between Reach Out Lakota and the Community Foundation has resulted in nearly $550,000 of support, including a recently announced $200,000 grant to secure the future of Reach Out Lakota. The grant is important, says Ian, because those endowed funds will allow Reach Out Lakota more time to focus on better delivery of services rather than worrying about where the next dollar will come from. Although Ian concluded his service on Reach Out Lakota’s board in 2019, he continues to serve as a board member at the Community Foundation, and looks forward to the future impact of both organizations. “I’ve always been very invested in this community. I grew up here. I have a business in the community. I went to school here. So, seeing both these organizations be successful, I think, is a huge benefit to the community. It’s exciting for me to be able to be part of that, too.”

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait MEN OF WEST CHESTER AND LIBERTY, WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE! We had a fantastic men’s issue scheduled for last June, but we changed our plans last minute to do an issue focused on connecting and rebuilding our community during the peak of the pandemic. It has been a long two-year wait since our last men’s issue, so this month is all about the amazing (and patient) men in our community. Dads, grandfathers, uncles, stepfathers and mentors—thank you for the role you play in

raising up the kids in our community. Whether you coach a sports team, help out with homework or work hard to help provide for your family, we want to take this month to celebrate your efforts. We have so many inspirational men in our community, it was hard to decide which ones to spotlight this month. This year we decided to highlight some of our residents who have been in the national spotlight. From a hometown hero to a high performance driver, we’re sharing new insights into some fascinating community members to help you get to know them better on a personal level. It has already been four years since the Wade quadruplets set off for Yale University, so we also provide an update into what is next for these four remarkable young men.

ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED) MUSIC LOVER Music abounds at the resort. The West Baden Springs Hotel features live music in the atrium every evening, ranging from piano soloists to jazz trios. Throughout the summer and early fall, the Ragtime Rascals perform a mix of ragtime, gospel and military tunes nightly on the front lawn of the French Lick Springs Hotel. National headliners also perform at the resort with artists like Grand Funk Railroad scheduled for September and Clint Black in October. FOR THE FOODIE The resort features ten restaurants ranging from fine dining to a casual pizzeria. One of their claims to fame is that tomato juice was first served at the hotel when they ran out of orange juice and needed a quick alternative to serve. The neighboring communities of French Lick and West Baden Springs also offer a variety of food and dining options. If bourbon is your drink of choice, take the bourbon tour. This selfpaced tour guides visitors to six locations across the resort, each

offering a bourbon-based food or drink item. Just off the main property is the French Lick Winery. Enjoy a tasting to sample from the dozens of locally made wines before purchasing some to take home. MUCH MORE This is just some of what can be found at the French Lick Resort. Other unique features include trolley rides, historical tours, carriage rides, surrey cart rentals and train rides. The resort even has a full casino and conference center. So, as you finalize your summer and fall travel plans, consider a visit to French Lick Resort. FrenchLick.com

LEE WONG’S PATH TO WEST CHESTER

28

West Chester + Liberty Lifestyle | June 2021

LEE WONG IS A FAMILIAR FACE IN OUR COMMUNITY. You may know his smile from ribbon-cutting ceremonies or recognize him on a mini segway in local parades. Recently featured in national news in a viral video, you may remember his heartfelt speech from behind the podium of a West Chester town hall meeting. Lee is passionate about the community where he lives, works and plays. Lee experienced a curvy path to West Chester. As a boy, he lived with his Chinese parents in Borneo, an island in Southeast Asia. He learned to rely on his circle of family and friends when he lost both parents at a young age. When it was time to consider college, he applied to study in Chicago and followed his older brother to the United States. “My father died when I was 10, and two years later, my mother also met her demise. By the goodness of the Lord, I made it through,” Lee says. “There was no university. You could either apply and go away to study or stay there,” he explains. “I was fortunate.” Lee’s course of study shifted when the unthinkable happened.

HOMETOWN HERO (CONTINUED)

“My dream to become a pharmacist was derailed because I was attacked in Chicago. That was a turning point in my life,” he says. “I didn’t want to be a victim. I wanted to improve myself and make myself better, stronger. So, I went into the Army.” Lee credits the United States Army for many of his life skills. “The Army really taught me a lot: how to talk to people, networking, teamwork,” he says. “This is where I learned about patriotism, leadership and taking initiative—don’t sit there and wait for someone to tell you, go out and do it.” He started in Military Police, but later tested into the exclusive Criminal Investigation Command unit, described as the FBI of the Army. “I loved it so much, I stayed 20 years. It was very rewarding,” he says. Another big shift happened in Lee’s life when his Chicago roommates took him along for a family reunion. There, he met his future wife, Terri. “We had one date and that was it!” he says with his trademark smile. Lee and his family moved to West Chester in 2001, attracted by the school district, open spaces and proximity to Terri’s family and friends. “I just love it. It is open out here. It’s a great place to raise a family,” he says. “It is safe, has a good police department, good services and amenities. Why not live in West Chester?” Lee is now Chair of the West Chester Township Board of Trustees, where his public service career began in 2006. “I want to make wherever I live a community,” he explains. “I wanted to have a voice in it and make it better than when I found it. This is why I get involved.” Lee responds to the struggles that life has handed him with thoughtfulness, erring to the side of kindness and living with generosity. He knows and trusts the power of being a part of a caring community. “Real patriotism and loyalty come from the heart, not in the skin, or a tattoo, or flags all wrapped around,” says Lee. “It’s in the heart. It goes deep.”
