The Northern Cincinnati Foundation has teamed up with Flynn & Co. CPAs and Advisors to oer some year-end giving advice to help you make an impact this holiday season and plan for future philanthropy.

Rick Flynn | President & CEO Flynn & Co. CPAs & Advisors

Are charitable contributions deductible for federal income tax purposes in 2021?

Yes, charitable contributions make up a part of total itemized deductions. A taxpayer may deduct the larger of itemized deductions or the standard deduction - $25,100 if ling married ling jointly or surviving spouse, $12,550 if ling as married ling separately or single, and $18,800 if ling as head of household. Taxpayers who take the standard deduction can still deduct $300 ($600 if married ling joint) for cash contributions. Are there any special rules for those subject to a required minimum distribution from a retirement account?

Yes, a taxpayer subject to the required minimum distribution (RMD) rules when reaching 72 years of age may direct some or all of his RMD directly to a charity of his choice. Donors can contribute the RMD to an existing fund at the Northern Cincinnati Foundation, or establish a new fund. The retirement plan owner cannot claim a deduction for this donation, but he does not have to recognize any income for the amount of the RMD donated. In this way, even if the donor will not be itemizing, he still receives full tax benet for his donation.

Erin Clemons | President & CEO Northern Cincinnati Foundation

What are the advantages of giving through the Northern Cincinnati Foundation?

The Northern Cincinnati Foundation is your partner in philanthropy, with exible giving options and a donor-focused approach to help you meet your charitable goals. We can help connect you to regional needs, and our professional sta will work with you, or your attorney or professional advisor, to determine the best giving path for your nancial picture. You can give now, receive immediate tax benets, and decide grant distributions on your timeline to support causes important to you. Is my charitable giving restricted to the northern Cincinnati region when I give through the Foundation? Although northern Cincinnati is our area of focus, we can help you make an impact in communities across the country, or around the world, in areas that align with your interests. The administrative fee from your fund supports the Foundation’s mission to improve the quality of life for communities in northern Cincinnati through grant funding and philanthropic support.

WE ALL COULD BENEFIT FROM FRIENDS AND MENTORS IN OUR LIVES TO HELP US FIND OUR WAY. Sometimes it’s as simple as someone to talk to about sustaining one’s marriage or family decision-making. “I needed to sharpen these men by showing them different things and holding them accountable to become better versions of themselves, but my pastor kept telling me it was bigger than that,” says Richard. Richard began talking with people he knew who were involved in his church. He has assembled a nonprofit board of seven members with ties to United Way, St. Vincent DePaul Foundation and grant writing expertise, all with the goal of building capacity to help men in the community. He hopes that a nonprofit that provides outreach specifically to men will not only give them mentoring and advice but also practical assistance with everything from utility bills to toiletries, giving just-in-time care to help those whose families are struggling. “I’m willing to partner with any nonprofit as long as our values line up. I want to keep expanding my network for helping people,” explains Richard. “I’m a veteran, so I’d like to be able to help homeless veterans get help through the VA [Veterans Affairs], for example, since I know a few people here and there inside the VA.” One program within the nonprofit will be the Overcomer’s Achievement Scholarship, in honor of Richard’s father. “When I was around three years old, my Dad had his arms cut off in a paper machine; he struggled but he never let it overcome him,” explains Richard. “He passed away in June this year, and I’d always told him I’d do a scholarship in his name. I want to give back to a person who has had the cards stacked against them, to show them that someone sees and recognizes them.”

makerspace is stocked with tools and technology for inventing. Its 3D and vinyl printers are available for staff production of patron projects. “It’s a small business incubator,” Cari explains. “We can generate posters and banners at cost.”

DIGITAL ARCHIVES The enhanced archives at MidPointe now include yearbooks from area high schools dating back to 1939. “We have new ways to embarrass you with years of yearbooks available for viewing,” Cari laughs.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS From Mobile hotspots to board games, laptops to leisure kits, MidPointe encourages you to try something new. “We have musical instruments, giant Jenga, croquet,” Cari lists. “These are new hobbies you can try out and experience yourself at home.”

FINE FREE It’s true, MidPointe is no longer charging fines, although you are still responsible for what you check out. “We don’t want fines to be a barrier to access to the materials that are available for the community here at the library,” Cari explains.

SOMETHING MAGICAL HAPPENS WHEN WE GATHER AROUND A TABLE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY. The laughter and stories flow almost as easily as the wine. Even the food tastes better when it is shared with the people we love. Whether your holiday table is set for two or twelve, elevate your tablescapes this season. Consider these decorating ideas that will make you and your guests fall in love with your autumn table. + Bring the Outdoors In Natural elements like pinecones and fall leaves make beautiful (and free!) additions to the fall table. Accessorize with flowers and sprigs of greenery. Pumpkins and gourds of all colors add visual interest to a fall-themed table. + Gather Around an Edible Centerpiece The centerpiece is the star of the table. Fruit sculptures, appetizer plates and cheese boards are pretty and great for pre-dinner snacking. Charcuterie boards are gaining popularity for their variety and healthy options. As an added bonus, you’ll spend less time serving and more time at the table, enjoying your guests. + Create Height Especially at big, holiday dinners, space on the table is valuable real estate. Take your table dressings vertical to optimize elbow room. Layer the linens. Stack the dishes at each place setting using a variety of chargers and plates of multiple sizes. Lift the serving platters to maximize space. Make sure that you can still see across the table over the decorations. + Add a Personal Touch Handwritten place or menu cards add a personal touch that make your guests feel extra special. Let your personality shine! + Set Up Self-Serve Stations Make self-service wine and dessert tables separate from the dining table. This arrangement frees guests from the table and encourages mingling and conversation between courses. + Put Safety First Keep candle flames away from flower arrangements and other flammables. Do not leave cooking food unattended. Tablescape: LeAnn Parker with @Silvertoothfarmhome Charcuterie Board: Sarah Juenemann with GrazingKC Wine: Amigoni Urban Winery
