It’s easy to get stuck in a cooking rut and start making the same dishes over and over. This year our annual food and spirits issue is packed full of new recipes and ideas to inspire you to mix things up in the kitchen. Whether you’re an experienced home chef or a rookie in the kitchen, we have a recipe to fit your culinary skill level. We joined the West Chester Fire Department in their kitchen to learn how they prepare meals that are both delicious and quick. The WCFD compiled some of

October is fire prevention month, so we also asked these fire safety experts for tips on how to keep your family safe when cooking at home. Many thanks to the Tuesday crew at Station 71 for a fabulous lunch: Charlie Dodd, Carmen Kuehn, Tim Ludwig and Jason Mesman. If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll enjoy the delicious dessert recipe from The Spicy Olive on page 26. Learn what makes their oils and vinegar so different and how they can amp up the flavor in any dish you make.

Master Sargent Corey Hood
The Hoody Memorial The Hoody Memorial honors and celebrates a local American Hero, US Army Golden Knight and proud Lakota West Graduate, Master Sergeant Corey Hood. After graduation, Hood enlisted in the Army and reported to boot camp just months before 9/11/2001, serving five tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan with the 82nd & 101st Airborne and the 25th Infantry Division and earning numerous awards, including two Bronze Stars. He was selected to The US Army Golden Knights, the US Army’s elite parachute team, in 2014. Tragically, Hood passed in 2015 after a performance for the Golden Knights at the Chicago Air & Water Show. But six years later, Corey is still making a difference. In 2016, a group of Hood’s family and friends set out to celebrate his legacy and to give back to the local community Corey loved so much. They established the Hoody Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Northern Cincinnati Foundation to award a Lakota High School senior who possess the same positive qualities Hood exhibited throughout his life - a strong will, desire to succeed & a little bit of grit. Thanks to incredible community support of their annual fundraiser – The Hoody Memorial Golf Tournament & Dinner – the Hoody Steering Committee was able fully endow the fund, ensuring a $7500 scholarship will be awarded through the Foundation in Corey’s memory for generations to come.
“Endowment was our way of making Corey’s impact everlasting,” says Nick Enger, Hoody co-founder. “Corey had a lasting impact on anyone who had the pleasure to meet him. He had an incredible way of drawing people together, regardless of differences, and focusing on the positives in life. We are hopeful that this endowment means that he will forever be making a positive impact in people’s lives.” This year, the Hoody Committee expanded their mission, working with the Northern Cincinnati Foundation to create two additional funds in memory of Corey to broaden their reach in the community. The Hoody Memorial Veteran’s Fund and The Hoody Memorial Lakota Athletics Fund will support veterans and service members, and needs of the Lakota Athletic Department – important facets of Corey’s life. “Aligning with the Northern Cincinnati Foundation was a no-brainer for the Hoody Memorial Funds,” says Enger. “The Foundation provides us the organization, expertise and skill of running a nonprofit organization without the headache. They have become an extension of our team, providing guidance and vision in areas we simply did not have a core competency.” Following their most successful fundraiser to date this past August - which hosted 500 attendees and raised more than $90,000 - The Hoody Memorial is moving forward and looking to the future, with plans to grow and endow the newly established funds to award annual $7500 grants, ensuring Corey’s legacy and impact live on in perpetuity. “I am not sure what the future holds for the Hoody Memorial,” says Nick. “But I am sure it will be Bigger, Better and Louder if Corey has anything to do with it.”
The Northern Cincinnati Foundation can help you make the most of your charitable dollars for the causes you care about.

f i rehouse fa re ARTICLE TERA MICHELSON PHOTOGRAPHY LEN KALTMAN—WEST CHESTER CORPORATE PHOTOGRAPHY
IN A USUAL YEAR, J. SCOTT BROOKS, CAPTAIN OF LOSS PREVENTION AT THE WEST CHESTER FIRE DEPARTMENT (WCFD), LEADS OUTREACH PROGRAMS IN THE COMMUNITY. These past two years have been anything but usual. Under COVID conditions, the WCFD did what they do best—they adapted. To safely educate the public, the department developed a firehouse cookbook to promote fire safety and healthy cooking. “We promoted it as ‘Real meals, prepared by real heroes,’” Scott explains. “We hope people are getting a lot of really good recipes.” The West Chester Fire Department: Firehouse Cookbook includes 58 favorite recipes of our local heroes, submitted by West Chester’s own first responders. The downloadable cookbook also includes tips for cooking safety and printable activity sheets with lessons and puzzles for children. “We have found that the number one cause of fires in West Chester is cooking related,” Scott says. “We involve the kids because they are starting to work in the kitchen a lot younger than they used to and they typically share what they learn with their parents.” “Our fire safety message remains constant,” he adds. “We’d like to see cooking fires go away altogether.” WCFD crews work on call for 24-hour shifts. Their teamwork extends into the kitchen where they prepare and eat meals together. Much like a typical busy family, they have to be efficient and adjust to whatever each day holds. Their recipes are quick and tasty. The WCFD urges residents to teach children safe kitchen habits while cooking up some of their favorite firehouse meals. Enjoy these two recipes, courtesy of the Tuesday crew at Station 71 of the West Chester Fire Department. Download your copy of the cookbook for more recipes like these online at WestChesterOH.org.

WCFD COOKBOOK SERVES UP KITCHEN SAFETY + DELICIOUS DINNERS
Fire Safety Tips
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Follow these tips for fire safety and prevention: 1. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. 2. Never leave the kitchen when cooking. 3. Wear short or close-fitting sleeves when cooking. 4. Unplug kitchen appliances when not in use. Tips are courtesy of the National Fire Protection Association. BBQ Chicken Pizza
+ 12-inch pre-baked pizza crust + olive oil + garlic powder + basil + ½ cup barbecue sauce + ½ red onion, sliced + ½ green pepper, sliced + 1 cup cooked chicken breast + 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
While it didn’t make it into the cookbook, this bonus recipe is a WCFD favorite. It is a quick and easy meal, from the oven to the table in under 30 minutes, especially with a team approach to meal prep. A firefighters’ time-saving tip is to shred the cooked chicken on the slow setting of a stand mixer. Many of the crew enjoy spicy barbecue sauce on this delicious twist on traditional pizza. Preheat oven to 450° F. Drizzle crust with olive oil. Season with garlic powder and dried basil, to taste. Bake for 5 minutes. Grill chicken on medium high heat for 5-8 minutes. Shred cooked chicken and set aside. Spread barbecue sauce on crust. Place onions and peppers on top of sauce. Add chicken. Top with cheese. Bake for 8–10 additional minutes, until the crust is crispy and the sauce bubbles. Slice and serve.

Q+A WITH HEALTHMARKETS
What is the Medicare AEP? AEP is the “Annual Enrollment Period,” the limited time you get each year to tweak your Medicare plan to best match your needs. As specialists, we evaluate prescription and co-pay costs and help clients make the most cost-effective choices. You can add enhancements or switch plans annually, but only between October 15 and December 7.
THERE ARE MANY FACTORS INVOLVED

How does HealthMarkets help clients find the best plan? There are hundreds of plans out there. It can be challenging to find the one with the formula and network you want. We use FitScore®, a tool to help clients consider their budget and find a personalized plan that works best for their situation.

Is there a way to simplify the Medicare process? Making the right choice is extremely important. At HealthMarkets, we work with clients to help navigate the process of finding a health plan that is going to best fit their needs and budget. Our service is of no cost. We simply want to help people review their plan options so they can feel confident in all their choices, not just this year, but for years to come. 34
