September 2025 PUBLISHER

Michelle Moody | Michelle.Moody@CityLifestyle.com

Welcome to our annual Style issue! This month, we’re exploring all the ways style shows up in our lives, from what we wear to how we present the spaces we call home. Inside, you’ll discover fun ways to dress up your front door, learn tips for styling your smile with help from a local dentist and even try your hand at a decorative art project that will spark your creativity. Our cover story introduces us to a talented local high schooler who designs and sews her own clothes. Her story brought me back to my own high school days in the early ’90s, a time when fashion felt like a nonstop roller coaster of ever-changing trends. We started the decade still clinging to the remnants of the ’80s: giant, teased hair held in place by an entire can of hairspray, acid-wash jeans with perfectly pegged cuffs and a closet full of neon. But by the time I graduated, we traded all that for the grunge look: oversized flannels, Doc Martens, high-waisted “boyfriend fit” jeans and band T-shirts became the uniform of the day (my publisher photo this month is the new flannel and boots I got for my 19th birthday). Then the mid ’90s hit movie Clueless turned fashion on its head once again—did I really wear a plaid mini skirt with knee high socks to class in college?! Thankfully, our fashion experiments back then weren’t immortalized on social media, so there’s no evidence of the wardrobe choices I’d rather forget. If the ’90s taught me anything, it’s that style is meant to evolve and to be fun. We hope this issue inspires you to embrace your own style and express yourself— whether that’s in your wardrobe, your home or simply the way you carry yourself.

As she heads to class, Lakota East junior Talah Hantush’s signature style clearly contrasts with those of other students. Wearing a handmade navy-blue, long-sleeve top with fur around the neck, she is most definitely more dolled up than her peers on a weekday morning. Unlike some of her classmates, Hantush feels at peace with the way she dresses and expresses herself through fashion. After multiple failed attempts of searching through her local mall for clothes that were appealing, she knew it was time for a different approach.

“I feel that the fashion industry is restricted by the need for money rather than actual fashion,” Hantush says. “Trends and microtrends have made it very difficult for me to find clothing that I truly enjoy wearing.” It took a while for Hantush to find a style that accurately expresses her personality, but she eventually found the solution: designing her own clothing. Armed with her sewing machine, creative vision and abilities, Hantush crafts pieces that resonate with her, incorporating various elements that she enjoys. “Fashion trends, old and new, do influence my style although I almost always end up adding my own personal twist into what I wear,” says Hantush. Hantush prefers elegant and feminine styles that give her clothes a timeless look rather than conforming to microtrends, which become popular and then fade quickly. She finds inspiration in everyday things. “Sometimes [I take an idea from] a shirt I pass by at the mall mixed with another shirt I find in a 13-year-old magazine,” Hantush says. “I take in the little ideas, and I create something new that will fit my own tastes.” Hantush has developed a design method of trial and error. “I draw it out, figure out the measurements of the piece and begin making my pattern on paper,” says Hantush. “I use my sewing machine to sew everything together, and I use my mannequin to make sure the pieces fit well.” Like many beginners, her sewing journey has been anything but seamless. Hantush has run into obstacles, but she uses them as learning experiences and has taught herself that it is perfectly fine for handmade clothes to look handmade. “I was always focused on making the clothing appear luxurious and store-quality,” she says, “but the little blemishes are what really make a piece truly unique.” Although she does not desire a career in the fashion industry, Hantush plans to continue creating clothing to express herself authentically. “I feel like making clothing as a job can make the work feel impersonal to me,” says Hantush. “I want to make clothes without the pressure of satisfying others or following deadlines.” Hantush urges others who are passionate about fashion to begin with small ideas and work up to larger projects by building necessary skills along the way. “It can be as simple as making adjustments to old pieces of clothing,” she says. “It takes time and patience, but the product is almost always rewarding.” Not all of Hantush’s clothing is handcrafted. She pairs her homemade clothing with sweaters from Ralph Lauren, shoes from Adidas and pieces from Brandy Melville that encapsulate her old money and coquette aesthetic. Hantush’s couture hobby allows her to feel confident as she strides through life and the halls of East in her handmade clothes instead of blending in with the crowd. STYLE THAT STARTS AT THE DOOR

Curb appeal is the first impression your home offers to guests, neighbors and passersby. The most influential factor in curb appeal is your front door, so why not make sure it has style that lasts through the seasons? We worked with family-owned, local businesses Cincinnati Entrypoint and Queen City Porch Design to showcase three area doors for fall. We hope you get inspired to give your home’s exterior a well-deserved makeover.

DECOR: Dusty pinks, deep reds and golds with layers of textures and plenty of pumpkins define this ‘90s-inspired fall design. CONTINUED >

ALL IN THE DETAILS

Cincinnati Entrypoint doors are custom-built in Mason from low-maintenance fiberglass. Unlike wood which can expand, contract, bow and crack over time, or steel which can dent and eventually rust, fiberglass gives homeowners the best of both worlds—durability and energy efficiency with the option of a smooth or woodgrain finish that beautifully mimics real wood.

DOOR: Mahogany-grain double fiberglass doors with 3/4 triple-paned beveled low-e SDL glass, bronze sill and EMTEK Baden grip with Empowered 2 smart deadbolt. DECOR: These welcoming double doors inspired the modern farmhouse theme, featuring wreaths expertly chosen to complement the brick color.

GLASS TRENDS

Cincinnati Entrypoint’s Cody Carden tells us, “Lately, we’ve seen a rise in gridded glass, especially for homeowners who are drawn to the classic farmhouse look. Our simulated divided sidelites give the charm of individual panes while keeping the energy efficiency of a single glass panel.” Many customers also prefer clear or textured glass for a minimal and modern aesthetic. For others, transitional decorative glass patterns are popular—they add personality and privacy while still letting in light and offering a glimpse outside. There’s truly something for every style.

CHOOSE THE PERFECT LOOK

The Cincinnati Entrypoint showroom in Mason makes it stress-free and inspiring to choose the perfect door to fit your home’s aesthetic. Appointments ensure customers meet with an expert who can guide them through design choices, answer their questions and provide a free quote. Seeing full-size examples in person builds confidence in your selections so you can leave knowing exactly what you’re getting. You also won’t experience the dreaded hard sell. Cody explains, “Unlike companies that use pressure tactics or ‘buy today’ discounts, we recommend taking your time to make the right choice. Since we buy materials in bulk and build everything in house, we’re able to offer a great value every day.”

“Lately, we’ve seen a rise in gridded glass, especially for homeowners who are drawn to the classic farmhouse look.” DRESS IT UP

Queen City Porch Design’s Lauren Lewis and Liz Matttingly are former educators and local moms who have always shared a love for creativity and community. They’re channeling that passion into something that brings joy to others: beautifully decorated porches, one season at a time. For fall, Lauren and Liz recommend working with them to add dreamy autumn colors and darling decorative touches to help your porch stand out without the effort. Fall packages are on sale now.

ROPE TEXTURE ART

Supplies needed: • Window insulation strips • Canvas • Kilz Interior primer • Staple gun • Spray paint, color of choice • Super glue, optional

Instructions: Create the desired design using insulation strips. Simply peel off the sticky backing and attach to the canvas. Be sure to wrap each strip around the back and press firmly. Use a staple gun to secure strips to the back of the canvas. Add a dap of super glue to any curved areas that appear to loosen. Once your desired design is created, apply a thin coat of Kilz interior primer. Spray paint the entire canvas the color of choice that you would like. Allow to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.

This trend-forward DIY art piece adds texture and dimension to your walls and is easy enough for anyone to do regardless of artistic ability.

exploring the power of joy How the Karen Wellington Foundation Restores Hope—Through Joy

It all started with a woman and a dream. Karen Wellington believed that even in the thick of cancer treatment, life deserved to be lived with joy. Today, her legacy lives on through the Karen Wellington Foundation for LIVING with Breast Cancer (KWF), which brings “Gifts of Fun” to women living with breast cancer— one spa day, one concert ticket, one beach getaway at a time. Wellington, a longtime Cincy mom-soccercoach-singer-painter-cake-designer, lived with breast cancer for 10 years—but she never let her disease define her. She dreamed of a world where women fighting breast cancer could get a break from the endless cycle of appointments and uncertainty. Instead of waiting until she was cancer-free, Wellington believed in LIVING fully with cancer…and helping others do the same. After her passing in 2007, her family made that dream a reality, sending one family living with breast cancer on vacation that first year. Today, the Cincinnati-based nonprofit has gifted more than 4,000 women and their families with moments of joy—from girls’ trips and sporting events to beach vacations and skydiving.

“We put fun back on the calendar,” says Marketing & Events Manager at KWF Emma Hooi. “That could mean a relaxing trip to Florida or a girls’ weekend at Hocking Hills. It could also mean a zoo day, spa treatment or even just a night out at a Reds game. It’s about helping women feel like themselves again—not just someone battling cancer.” For Mandy Geyman, those words took on deep, personal meaning. In January 2021, while 17 weeks pregnant with her second daughter, Geyman was diagnosed with stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), a rare and aggressive form of the disease. That same week, her oldest daughter, Lucy, just three years old, was diagnosed with autism.

“Things moved very fast once I was diagnosed,” Geyman shares. “Only one week after, I was sitting in the chemo center starting treatment as a pregnant woman…I ended up doing 13 rounds of chemotherapy. On top of cancer and baby appointments, we were on a new journey to find the best autism resources for Lucy. And COVID was still a big deal, so we had to stay physically isolated from most family and friends…our incredible support system surrounded us in so many creative ways—so we felt loved and not alone.” Her husband, Matt, became the family’s anchor. “He managed my appointments, sometimes 10 a week, researched resources for Lucy, handled all our medical bills and insurance claims and still worked full-time from a small desk in the playroom. He definitely had the harder job,” she recalls.

Three weeks after her final chemo session, Geyman gave birth to a healthy daughter named Hope. Two weeks later, she underwent a mastectomy, which revealed a complete response to chemotherapy. After 30 rounds of radiation and multiple surgeries, she had no evidence of disease. From diagnosis to reconstruction, her journey spanned nearly two years. Amidst this whirlwind, Matt and a family friend nominated Mandy for a KWF Gift of Fun: a week-long beach trip to Naples, Florida, in July 2022—a chance not only for a vacation, but permission to dream again. “Before that, I hadn’t let myself think about the future. I was cautious about making plans because the reality was, I was scared. I thought, ‘What if I’m not alive long enough to see the moment?’” Geyman recalls. “When KWF gifted me the trip, it was the first time since the cancer diagnosis that I had something planned for the future. It gave me a reason to look forward and to allow myself to be excited about it.” CONTINUED >

That trip became a tradition. The Geymans now return to the same home each summer, forging a deep connection with the generous homeowners who donated the space. “We’ve never met in person, but we stay in regular contact with them—they feel like our own family. Our kids ask how many more days until we go back to ‘our Florida home,’” Geyman laughs. Now with no evidence of disease, Geyman gives back by nominating others and sharing her journey on her Instagram account, @ WarriorMamaMandy. “KWF provides something unique in acknowledging the importance of having fun and living life, despite the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis,” Geyman shares. “They remind us that we’re more than just cancer patients. We’re people with dreams and goals—and they encourage you to embrace them.” “We’re not just giving gifts,” Hooi emphasizes. “We’re giving joy. We’re giving healing. And the reminder that life is still beautiful.” These kind and caring acts remind these incredible families that joy and resilience can live alongside hardship, which is why KWF thrives on community support through donations of time, resources or simply Annual FUN Run 5k + Recipient Celebration. ZOOM WHITENING “If we want to truly whiten the teeth from the inside out, we need a professional dental product that will do that. You're going to get better, longer-term results with less sensitivity. Zoom Whitening is for when you want a movie-star-smile quickly. It’s a blue light therapy that takes one office visit, then we send you home with custom bleach trays for maintenance.”

INVISALIGN “Invisalign uses clear liners for straightening teeth—it’s virtually invisible. It’s great for patients who don’t want the hassle of metal brackets. A common misconception is that Invisalign is to make your teeth look better, but we focus more on function—everything we do in dentistry comes down to making sure your teeth are functioning at their best.”

INJECTABLES “Cosmetic Botox helps smooth lines on the face, neck and around the lips and we specialize in Therapeutic Botox for pain relief in patients that clench or grind their teeth or suffer from migraines or tension headaches. It's very targeted to the source of the problem—the masseter muscle for teeth and the temporalis for tension headaches behind your eyes.”

SLEEP APNEA APPLIANCES “Sleep apnea can put you at higher risk for stroke, heart attack and diabetes. We screen for risk signs and work with a sleep doctor, so you can take a sleep study with us and get results right away. If you’re a mild case or CPAP-intolerant, we make oral appliances, similar to a mouth guard, that helps open the airway while you sleep.” Alexandra Shehata, DDS, is a part of the West Chester Family Dentistry team.
