Style Update

It is with great excitement that we present the annual Style issue of West Chester + Liberty Lifestyle. In this month’s edition, we celebrate the diverse expressions of style that make our community vibrant and unique.

From the latest men’s fashion and hair trends to contemporary home décor, this issue is a showcase of how style can be a powerful form of self-expression and creativity. We've scoured the local scene to bring you inspiring stories and expert insights that reflect the eclectic tastes of our readers.

I recently saw a meme on Instagram that really hit home. It commented on how moms will buy more clothes for their kids than they could possibly need, meanwhile, moms are wearing  10-year-old bras. This one hit home for me! I can’t walk into a clothing store without buying a shirt for one of my sons, both of whom already have a closet full of clothes with the tags still on. But I can’t even remember the last time I treated myself to new undergarments. This made me think of our nonprofit feature this month on Underpants for All (flip to page 20). I love how this organization brings comfort and dignity to those in need by providing new underwear for people living in poverty. So this month I vow to pick up some underwear to donate to their charity, and while I’m at it I’ll grab myself something new too so I can ditch any of my bras that are older than my teenagers.

We hope the stories this month inspire you to embrace and explore your own unique sense of style. Whether you're seeking new fashion ideas, home design inspiration or simply a fresh perspective, we believe you'll find something here that resonates with you.

Warm regards,

STYLE PARADISE

Bliss Home Market Brings Joy + Ease to the Home Furnishing Shopping Experience

Bliss is the perfect description for a new furniture shopping experience in West Chester. What do you need to spruce up your home’s style? Comfy sectional? Modern bed? Dining room set? Area rug? Chances are, Bliss Home Market has it, new, in stock and ready to go home with you on shopping day. There’s no 12-week wait for delivery, no hovering sales staff

PHOTOGRAPHY

and best of all, you’ll find quality, name-brand items at up to half the price of what you’ll find anywhere else. It’s a style paradise—Bliss to be sure!

Bliss Home Market is the first franchise of its kind, a branch of its original flagship store in Columbus by the same name. Located just past the intersection of Allen and Muhlhauser Roads in West Chester, Bliss is only open one weekend each month, offering a unique shopping experience that boasts amazing prices.

“Bliss Home Market is a once-a-month warehouse event featuring all new home furnishings from big brand names that people will recognize,” explains franchise owner, Whitney Wedding.

Wedding, who has a natural eye for design and practical experience outfitting an Extreme Home Makeover home and two personal home-builds, fell in love with the style and ease of Bliss Home Market. She couldn’t pass up the opportunity to bring the unique experience to the area.

“We picked this area because of its proximity to both Cincinnati and Dayton,” Wedding says. “It’s quite convenient. There are other design stores in the area that I love, and we fit right in.”

Here’s how this shopping concept works. Wedding and her team go on the hunt and curate new, high-end furniture and home décor directly from manufacturers to fill their West Chester warehouse. They search for quality, well-known furniture pieces you may also find at places such as Crate & Barrel, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn and other popular stores. They fill their warehouse with leather couches, spacious sectionals, swivel chairs, beds, dining tables, rugs, lighting and mirrors—if your home needs it, they’ve got it. They stage it in sample room settings, complete with side tables and accessories like art, faux plants, coffee table books and pillows, making it easy for shoppers to envision the pieces in their own homes.

“The style at Bliss is coastal transitional,” Wedding shares. “The vibe is welcoming, airy and natural but it’s also family-friendly and durable. Ninety percent of the fabrics are performance fabrics, resistant to stains and easy to clean.”

Bliss Home Market franchise owner, Whitney Wedding, stocks the warehouse with big brand name furnishings for a once-a-month sales event that is not to be missed.

One weekend each month, usually the second or third weekend, as advertised on Bliss’ social media, the sale opens to the public. Shoppers can touch the fabrics, test the cushions and try the pieces for size and comfort—luxuries that make online furniture shopping such a challenge. When you buy it, you take it home the same day—it’s as easy as that.

Shopping dates and previews are announced on Bliss Home Market’s Instagram and Facebook. Follow them on social media for all the details.

September’s sale will introduce décor items to dress up the holiday home and table for each upcoming season: autumn, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Stop in and say hello to Wedding and her team—many of whom are family members.

“My mom and dad—they work for free,” Wedding says with a laugh. “It’s kind of a family affair around here!”

You’re sure to spy a treasure for your own family in this style paradise.

Mark your calendar for the September sales event: Saturday, September 14, 8 a.m. 1 p.m. and Sunday, September 15, 12 p.m 4 p.m. Get in line early for a chance to win a 10% off coupon.

Underpants for All Collects Underwear for the Underprivileged

Going commando isn’t for everyone. Local nonprofit Underpants For All’s got us covered. Founder Christine Martin has made it her life’s mission to make sure each glute has equal coverage, collecting underpants of all shapes, colors and sizes to give to those in need. Inspiration struck during the mundane task of cleaning out her closet before her fortieth birthday.

“I was pulling together some donations that I wanted to give to a local charity,” Martin says. “When I opened a drawer and saw underpants, I slammed the drawer thinking, ‘No, we don't

Founders of Underpants for All: Margaret Burgdorf, Patrick Martin + Christine Martin

donate that.’ It immediately spurred the thought, ‘If people need my sweaters, jeans and shoes…they also need underpants. So where are they going to get them?’”

This lightbulb moment galvanized Martin into action, and she asked her friends to bring new underwear to her birthday party instead of a personal gift—a switch her party guests embraced.

“Oh my goodness! They loved it,” she says. “People brought everything from granny panties to thongs to little kids’ Underoos.”

Martin’s family joined in.

“My kids decorated a collection box,” she says, “and my next-door neighbor put together a scrapbooking spread with little cutouts of underwear to capture the fun, too.”

The event quickly took on deeper meaning when Martin and her family dropped off 395 pairs of undergarments to a local charity.

“We all love tapping into that inner-sixth grader who can’t say the word underpants without giggling, but when you pull up with new underwear and see the thrill on workers’ faces, that’s when things

changed…when I truly understood that what we're doing is providing dignity…and in a way that people don't normally ask for, or receive, or might not even be able to articulate,” Martin explains.

“When I think of where these items are going, I picture someone who is in a low spot of their life,” she adds. “Maybe today's the day they want to start over. If they’re trying to get into that ‘today's going to be a better day’ mindset, you don't want to start by putting on yesterday's underpants.”

More than ten years passed before Martin formalized Underpants For All with the help of Badin High School. She reached out to them, aware of their service requirements.

“I said, ‘Hey, I've got this crazy idea for a nonprofit, and how would you feel if I get some students involved?’” she shares.

She and the students learned together, bringing Underpants For All from an idea to full nonprofit status.

“Students are fearless, creative and energetic,” she shares. “If I can allow these kids to practice [the skill of service], then maybe they get their own amazing ideas for how they want to serve this world.”

Last December, Martin visited Reach Out Lakota, a local food and clothing pantry, and was troubled with the lack of resources in her own neighborhood.

“How Reach Out Lakota serves depends on their inventory at the moment,” Martin explains. “At the time, clients could only receive one pair of new underpants a month because that’s all Reach Out Lakota could supply.”

Martin consulted her co-founders and board of directors—her husband Patrick Martin and best friend Margaret Burgdorf—and they decided to partner monthly with Reach Out Lakota to supply undergarments. Underpants For All has also made donations to New Life Mission, Pathway to Hope, Hope’s Closet, Lydia’s House and Anthem House Church during the holidays when they serve meals to the homeless.

Nationally, they’ve collaborated with the Salvation Army, donating underwear during Oklahoma tornadoes and Florida hurricanes. Internationally, they’ve supported Project Mañana, which aids the impoverished in the Dominican Republic.

Martin encourages everyone to listen to those inner voices and lean into them when it comes to making a difference globally.

“We are all created for service, and we're all called to serve in different ways,” she says.

The next time you’re updating your wardrobe, remember that even the simplest donation can provide dignity and hope. Don’t get caught with your pants down—support the cause by shopping their Amazon wish list or donating directly at UnderpantsForAll.org.

“We are all created for service, and we’re all called to serve in different ways.”

Hometown Actor Haley Weber Falls Head First Into a Film Career

BY

BY

Haley Weber did not always know she wanted to be an actor while growing up in West Chester. But after studying nursing and Spanish at the University of Cincinnati and working as a travel nurse, Weber finds herself pursuing acting fulltime. In a little more than a year, she appeared in 16 films, including 11 lead roles. Now residing in Los Angeles, Weber loves calling Ohio “home.”

“After experiencing travel nursing, working outside of this country and living in four different states, I know that I’m so grateful to have come from Ohio,” says Weber.

Weber grew up attending Lakota schools where she dipped her toes into acting, performing in Lakota West’s production of “A Christmas Carol” when she was in fifth grade and various plays at Plains Junior High. It wasn’t until travel nursing took her to Georgia that she fell head first into the world of film.

“Travel nursing is hard because you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable and getting out of your comfort zone,” Weber shares. “I tried in every city to do something new to try to meet new people and make friends and that's why I decided to take an acting class.”

Before a move to Atlanta, Weber was unaware that it was such a film hub. Between acting classes and self-tapes, Weber began to fall in love with the craft. The first role she booked was a villain, filmed in a Target parking lot. While Weber laughs that the final footage looked something like a seventh-grade film project, she fondly looks back on her introduction to the industry.

“I love that that was my first role,” says Weber. “It's a crazy adventure. You never know what you're going to get.”

Since then, Weber has appeared in many more films, playing roles ranging from the “It girl” in romcoms to the killer in thrillers including titles like “The Master Chief” and “Danger on Party Island.”

While Weber’s work mostly landed her in film, she also booked a commercial and an industrial film, the latter allowing her to combine her background in nursing with her passion for acting.

“I played a bystander in the film,” she explains. “It was designed to teach people how to administer Narcan in case of an overdose.”

Besides traditional films, Weber found success competing at the 2023 San Diego 48 Hour Film Project where she took part in creating a short film titled “Autumn Leaves.” Kierron Molet, who Weber knew from another film project, invited her to be a part of the cast.

“On Friday at 7 p.m. the judges give you a genre, character, prop and line of dialogue that every team has to include,” says Weber. “Then you have 48 hours to make a film.”

“Autumn Leaves” ended up winning Best Film, Best Sound Design and Best Special Effects, leading the team to compete in the 2023 Los Angeles 48 Hour Film Project,

where Weber was nominated for best actress for the project “Morning Star.”

Weber’s latest Lifetime film, “My Father’s Killer,” is one of her most rewarding projects because of the challenge it provided.

“It opened up new doors in my acting toolbox to take on these characters that are challenging and not just black and white,” Weber explains. “There's gray area in humanity and in these characters.”

Weber’s careers in travel nursing and acting have taken her across the globe, but she credits her community here at home for shaping her.

“I just took my fiancé home, so we went to all these places in Cincinnati I wanted to show him. Graeter’s, Skyline and The Cone were at the top of the list,” she shares.

See Haley Weber in action on the YouTube Channel @extrarad, including the projects from the 48-hour film festivals. Watch for her in “My Father’s Killer” on Lifetime, coming soon. HaleyLynneWeber.com

SWEATER WEATHER

FALL FOR EFFORTLESS MENSWEAR THAT’S COZY, NATURAL + RELAXED

The change of season brings the cooler weather we’ve all been waiting for and this fall’s fashion lineup is ready for it. For the latest in men’s styles, we turn to an expert with Cincinnati roots, Grayson Thornberry, an up-and-coming designer for Todd Snyder, the renowned menswear label based in New York City. The Todd Snyder brand is synonymous with modern American style, creating quality, innovative and playful apparel for men and making fashion attainable and fun. Thornberry has good news for fashionable guys that crave comfort—this autumn’s wardrobe essentials are cozy, natural and relaxed.

SOFT + COZY

This season’s signature sweaters are soft and cozy, offering the comfort of athleisure without compromising style. Watch for casual silhouettes and low-gauge knits that present as plush and sophisticated, as well as breathable and lightweight fine woolen wear.

“Men are feeling extra cozy these days, but that doesn’t mean sweatpants and sneakers,” explains Thornberry. “We are gravitating towards luxe cashmere, alpaca and wool sweaters—the softer the better.”

WARM + NATURAL

This fall’s look is all about how a garment feels. The ribs, weaves and waves of the favored fall fabrics and knits will make you want to reach out and touch them. Bid farewell to logo-stamps and artificial hues. Classic and inviting natural colors like espresso bean, camel and desert beige are in the spotlight for their warm and earthy appeal.

“Texture is in,” says Thornberry. “We are losing logos and running toward a visually and physically textured feel. Whether that means a boucle sweater or an extra slub cotton jacket, a textured garment feels rich with depth.”

RELAXED + ROOMY

Fall pant styles are trending away from the tight and skinny and into the relaxed and roomy. Refined details bring a vintage flair: the look is both relaxed and tailored, with flattering pleats and timeworn fabrics.

“We are seeing a tremendous downtrend of slim fit pants,” Thornberry says. “Roomy, drapey and relaxed pants are making their way back into style. Whether that is Italian grandpa, laid back Americana or leisure style on a Sunday, wide is back.

“Pleats, generous leg measurements and drape are all welcomed,” he adds.

Update your man’s fall wardrobe with these new trends that will feel comfortable and lived-in from the start. Welcome the soft, relaxed and cozy fashions of the season into your closet to boost your professional and casual life with an effortless and timeless style that any sharp dressed man can appreciate.

Grayson Thornberry

Fashion forward Grayson Thornberry is a designer for Todd Snyder, an American menswear label. Thornberry grew up in suburban Cincinnati and launched his career in fashion design from the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP). He enjoys the collegiality of menswear, especially as a part of the Todd Snyder team.

Thornberry has always been a step ahead in fashion, launching his first collection as a teen and now living out his childhood dream in his creative career in New York. He is inspired by family, tradition, humanity and heritage.

“I really value tradition for what it is and use it to create something that’s new,” he explains. “I’m driven to create a better version of what came before.”

WINDOWS ARE A GILKEY FAMILY OBSESSION

You might have seen one of Gilkey Window Company’s TV commercials where founder Mike Gilkey is surrounded by a few of his grandkids. He’s enthusiastically preaching the virtues of the family product to his mildly interested young audience. It’s cute, it’s sweet, ending with Mike’s commitment “to building the best windows for you.”

If making great windows and convincing viewers to sign up is the main message, there’s also the idea of family and “We’re all in it together.” It’s not just lip service—the ranks of Gilkey employees are filled with family members. Not long ago, top leadership passed to Mike’s son, Vince, as CEO and his son-in-law, Augie Quirch (daughter Emily’s husband), as President. But they had to earn it.

Vince’s first job with the company began during summers in high school. “I cleaned the bathrooms and picked up cigarette butts,” he smiles. Eventually, he graduated to making screens, then went full-time after college.

The fact is, Vince Gilkey’s career path was predestined. It’s part of his family’s DNA, stretching back to the mid-1940s when his grandfather John and great-uncles returned from World War II.

After the war, as the first baby boomers were joining the population, his great-uncle Joe saw an opportunity—all those growing families would need homes, so he and his brothers started businesses covering all facets of the construction trade. For Vince’s grandfather John, it was a concrete company.

One of those new baby boomers was Vince’s dad, Mike, who was hooked on the family business from an early age. “When I got into high school, I started working with my dad pouring concrete in the summer,” Mike says.

After working for his dad right after college, then for a large remodeling company, Mike started his own remodeling

company in 1978, working out of his garage and then 2-year-old Vince’s bedroom.

“He had a phone, a desk and this humongous blueprint machine that took up half my bedroom,” Vince remembers, laughing.

At the time, Mike was selling windows produced by other manufacturers—but he wasn’t happy with their products. So, in 1986, Mike decided to start making his own.

He converted a former Ludlow brewery to his first factory and began manufacturing vinyl windows, introducing a key change to the process—rather than screwing the pieces together, Gilkey Windows began welding them together, preventing the leaks that often developed as competitors’ conventional assembly would start to loosen.

In the years since, the company has expanded in significant ways. In 1994, it moved to its current Sharonville site. Today, Gilkey has 90,000 square feet of manufacturing space and added sales offices in Louisville, Palatine and Chicago Ridge, IL.

There are 150 full-time employees, including a few who have worked for the company for 40 or more years. That includes family—in addition to Vince and Augie, Vince’s sister Debbie Scheidler is Payroll Director, his aunt Teresa Gedeon is HR Director, his uncle Cris Riel is Marketing Director, his cousin Kevin Hillebrand is General Sales Manager and Vince’s 24-year-old son, Matt, is the newest family hire, working on an installation crew. Vince’s mom, Sue, still helps out in the office.

It’s not easy to build that kind of company loyalty in a world where Americans change jobs on average 12 times during their work lives (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics). Gilkey’s formula for those who show interest and potential? Invest in them with training and opportunities to grow so they can discover what they’re good at.

Of course, the foundation for the family’s success is the windows they make and sell—and always looking for ways to do it better.

About 10 years ago, Gilkey began making fiberglass windows. “They just look better,” Vince says. “We use a laminate to apply color, which doesn’t fade.”

This addition has led to some interesting jobs. Although vinyl windows are not acceptable for use in restoring historic buildings, fiberglass windows are—their much sleeker, stylish designs allow them to look much more like the original windows on older homes.

To date, Gilkey has replaced windows in a historic restaurant in Louisville, a church school in Columbia-Tusculum and at the historic Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains downtown.

Perhaps the best sales pitch for this local family company can be experienced by merely stepping into the Gilkey Windows Sharonville showroom. Across from rows of samples is a wall of windows that looks onto the factory floor. It sounds like a low hum of activity until one of the windows is opened, allowing the clamor of machinery and workers to pour in, showing off their noise-blocking, insulating ability. Now that’s a sound endorsement.
