LIFESTYLE LETTER
Reset
January 2026 PUBLISHER
January always feels like a natural time to pause, refocus and start fresh, so we dedicate the first issue of each new year to health and wellness. This month we highlight some of the people and places in our community that inspire healthier and more intentional living. If you’re anything like me, the holidays brought their fair share of indulgence—extra desserts, midweek cocktails, skipped workouts, late nights and plenty of promises that “I’ll get back on track in January.” Remember that it's okay to be a little gluttenous occasionally. Before we make any changes, we have to offer ourselves grace. A reset doesn’t come with guilt or judgment; it comes with forgiveness and a willingness to begin again. January gives us all permission to do just that as we step into 2026. Resetting doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It can be as simple as adding one healthy habit at a time: drinking an extra glass of water each day, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, trying a new meditation app or planning a few meals each week that are healthier for you. Small steps add up quickly, and consistency is where real wellness starts. As you turn these pages, I hope you find something that encourages you to take care of yourself—because you’re worth it! Here’s to a fresh start, a renewed mindset and a year filled with health, balance and joy.

Dental Care Kids Can Trust ARTICLE BY A.J. LAPE PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEN KALTMAN

K I D S COR N E R | P RO FESSION AL SE RVICE S
For many kids—and plenty of adults—a trip to the dentist can be a white-knuckled experience. Dr. James Chao saw that fear firsthand as an active-duty Navy dentist in Okinawa, where even the toughest little patients tensed up the moment they sat down. Serving families stationed overseas, he also
“For parents, the drive to great pediatric dental care just got a whole lot shorter—and a lot more joyful.” witnessed how limited access to dental care could leave cavities untreated. When he returned home, he knew exactly what he wanted to create: a place where anxious kids could exhale, feel seen and maybe even have a little fun. That vision became Liberty Pediatric Dentistry. A true family endeavor, the practice is run by Dr. James and his wife, Brandy, who serves as office manager. They parent twin three-year-olds at home and also run their business together. To every little smile in the chair, he’s simply “Dr. James”—the guy who gets it. “Bad dental experiences as children lead to dental anxiety as adults,” he shares. “I want a place patients can truly call home, where they walk in and feel like they belong.” A big part of that is communication. Dr. James talks patients through every step using language they understand, reassuring them that he’s on their side.
One of the most meaningful extensions of that comfort-first philosophy is the sensory room—a space purpose-built for children who need a quieter, more predictable environment before entering a clinical setting. “With the rise in the number of kids with autism, we see a growing need for people who are specially trained to attend to their needs,” he explains. “There are a lot of kids who may not necessarily be autistic but have hypersensitivity or sensory needs, too.” The sensory room includes a couch, bean bag, whiteboard, magnets and a television—tools that distract and soothe. It also gives parents a safe place to prep their child, rehearse what will happen or simply relax together. And that’s when the magic happens. “I can brush their teeth on the couch and talk to their parents at the same time, using neutral language,” Dr. James says. “Even kids without special healthcare needs love hanging out.”

And soon, kids will have another friendly face to greet them: Jingo, the Chao family’s golden retriever— currently training to become a therapy dog. Dr. James recalls a memorable first visit with a ten-year-old with special needs who had never let anyone look in his mouth. “He was very nervous,” Dr. James explains. “When he came in, he went straight to the sensory room, and we started playing.” After 30 minutes of gentle work, the boy allowed “two to three teeth at a time,” eventually opening wide enough for a full exam. “The second time he came back, he was so happy to see us,” he continues. “We weren’t a foreign place anymore. I pride myself on taking the extra time to meet their needs.” That individualized care continues beyond the sensory room. Believing parents know their children best, Dr. James starts every visit by talking with families about their child. They review oral hygiene habits, nutrition and any existing issues, then take x-rays and intraoral photos so parents can see exactly what Dr. James sees. Whenever possible, he avoids sedation, using laughing gas instead. He also screens for sensitivities—scents, tactile triggers or self-injurious behaviors—to tailor the environment and ensure safety for everyone. There are still cases, he notes, where a patient may benefit from sedation—an option he offers in-office or at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where he completed his residency. Kids leave with clean teeth, a toy from the treasure chest plus balloons. Future plans include hiring hygienists (Dr. James currently fills this role), adding more chairs, hosting a free dental day for kids who fall between insurance gaps and becoming an in-network TRICARE provider for military families. For parents, the drive to great pediatric dental care just got a whole lot shorter—and a lot more joyful.

TED KARRAS + THE CINCY HAT FOUNDATION BUILD HOMES + HOPE IN THE QUEEN CITY
HATS OFF TO CINCINNATI 16
G IV IN G BAC K | L I FE + C ULT U RE
It all started with a trendy hat. When the Cincy Hat started showing up on the heads of teammates and friends of Bengals Center Ted Karras, everybody wanted to know where they could get one. Two years and two million dollars later, the Cincy Hat
As the Cincy Hat Project grew, so did Ted and Matt’s vision for making a community impact. Having already built an impressive following, the two friends launched The Cincy Hat Foundation in October 2024, with hopes to extend its mission.
“THE CINCY HAT IS A UNIFORM FOR KINDNESS AND FUEL FOR COMMUNITY CHANGE.” is a uniform for kindness and fuel for community change. With funds from hat sales, The Cincy Hat Foundation is leading a grassroots movement to provide education and housing for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) right here in Cincinnati.
INDY ROOTS, CINCY CENTERED
Ted and Matt Renie, friends since they met in eighth grade, started The Cincy Hat Project when Ted spontaneously announced from the Bengals locker room that his hats were a fundraiser. During an interview with a local news station, Ted seized an opportunity to garner support for the Village of Merici, an Indianapolis nonprofit that provides housing for adults with IDD, that had been founded by Colleen Renie, Matt’s mom. “The hats were an overnight sensation!” says Colleen. “It was way beyond my expectations.” For both Ted and Matt, the cause runs deep. Matt’s older brother has IDD. "Ted was always around our family and saw the issues we have with housing and support," says Colleen. "When we built the Village in 2014, he befriended all the residents. It’s personal for him." “I have two cousins with nonverbal autism,” Ted shares. “I’ve known the villagers at Merici for more than a decade—I’ve worked with them and learned from them. Colleen is a visionary, and I want to continue her legacy in changing how these adults are housed,” he says.
“We started the Foundation knowing we needed to do something great for Cincinnati,” says Matt Renie, Executive Director of The Cincy Hat Foundation. “Our first act was to start a scholarship program for two young women with IDD at the University of Cincinnati.” The Cincy Hat Foundation proudly funds the two full scholarships through the University of Cincinnati’s Transition & Access Pathways (TAP) Program, empowering IDD students to engage fully in campus life while building academic, social, career and independent living skills. Two limited-edition hats in Bearcat colorways support and honor the students. Ted is personally committed to Cincinnati. “Colleen and the Village of Merici just completed their second building, and they’ve done such a great job,” Ted says. “But so many people here in Cincinnati have supported us that it felt past time we built something, infrastructure-wise, in the city that’s been so ferociously behind this mission.”
FILLING THE CINCINNATI HOUSING GAP
The Cincy Hat Foundation is exploring how they can support the growing IDD housing need in the Greater Cincinnati Area. The statistics are astonishing. “One of the biggest statistics that stands out is the need,” shares Emily Kendall, co-founder and president of EmpowerMe Living, a developer, owner and manager of housing for adults with IDD. “There are over 12,000 adults with IDD that currently live with caregivers over 60+. Loss of caregiver is the main CONTINUED >

reason people end up in an undesirable housing placement, or worse, on the street,” she adds. With such limited housing opportunities, Cincinnati’s IDD community is at great risk. “There’s a big gap for folks who just need a safe, independent environment—a place to live and thrive in their community,” Matt explains. The Cincy Hat Foundation is actively working on a few concepts for independent living opportunities for the IDD community in Cincinnati and hopes to unveil their first project in the coming months.
BUILDING HOUSING, BUILDING COMMUNITY
The Cincy Hat movement has grown far beyond anything they imagined. “People from all 50 states, and even other countries, have reached out,” says Ted. "This is all an amalgamation of 34,000 generous individuals that have bought hats," Matt agrees. That passion fuels their work ethic, one hat at a time. “When you buy a hat, it’s a donation,” explains Angeline Wellington, PR & Marketing for The Cincy Hat Foundation. “We walk the walk,” Ted insists. “I’ve never taken a cent, and I never will. Every dollar goes straight to the mission. We’re a lean organization, and we’ll stay that way. Our goal is simple: house as many people as possible and create a sustainable asset for this community that can snowball on itself in perpetuity.” “Ted is all in on Cincinnati,” states Matt. “But we can’t do it without the support of the community. It's a community effort.” Ted’s commitment to the cause shines through his words and actions. “This isn’t about fame,” says Ted. “It’s about service and love.” What started as a friend giving hats to friends has grown into neighbors building homes for neighbors. “I am grateful for the opportunity to help in any way I can,” Ted says. Join Ted and The Cincy Hat Foundation in its mission to build housing and expand opportunities for adults with IDD in our city. To get involved, purchase a hat, make a donation or learn more, visit TheCincyHat.com.

Making Mornings Healthy + Easy
Jumpstart Your Day with Protein-Packed Oats Overnight—Now Produced in West Chester ARTICLE BY A.J. LAPE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEN KALTMAN
20
EAT R IGH T | FO O D + BEVE RAGE
Mornings are a juggling act—blinking awake, walking the dog, herding kids out the door and trying to remember where you left your keys (and maybe your coffee). By the time you check the weather, skim your inbox or make sure your flight hasn’t been delayed, the day’s already running away. Breakfast? An afterthought. That’s where Oats Overnight comes in—a simple solution born from the chaos of real mornings. Professional poker player turned breakfast innovator Brian Tate is the CEO and creative force behind Oats Overnight—and the guy who had the lightbulb moment. Between cross-country travel and crack-of-dawn starts, he needed a way to fuel up without slowing down. So, he started experimenting in his own kitchen, mixing oats with protein, functional ingredients and real flavor to build a breakfast that didn’t need babysitting. “Mornings are busy, and breakfast is often the first thing to fall through the cracks,” shares Tate. “I realized others were facing the same problem: wanting to eat better but struggling to make it happen in the rush of the morning.” From there, Oats Overnight set out to raise the bar— combining genuine nutrition with everyday ease. Each serving is certified gluten-free and delivers 20+ grams of protein, whole-grain oats and superfoods like chia and flax seeds, available in both dairy and vegan options.
“Many breakfast brands focus on one or the other—either a ‘healthy-ish’ bar or a convenience shake,” Tate notes. “Oats Overnight is built on the insight that busy people want both: something ready, reliable and good for you.” With more than 60 flavors—from Maple Pancakes and Peach Upside-Down Cake to seasonal favorites like Pumpkin Pie and the bestseller Cookies & Cream—there’s an option for every taste. Offering a real-life fix to consumers, Oats Overnight’s business has skyrocketed, leading to a nationwide expansion that ultimately brought them to West Chester. “We chose West Chester for its strategic location near major highways and distribution corridors, which has significantly improved our logistics,” Tate adds. That move lowered costs and reduced shipping times—benefits that extend to both the company and the customer. Just as importantly, the West Chester plant has created nearly 300 permanent jobs with competitive wages and the opportunity for stock options. “As an employee-owned company, investing in a skilled local workforce and contributing to the economic strength of Ohio is central to our mission,” Tate emphasizes. Customers can purchase Oats Overnight in a one-time purchase or by subscription service in a 16-, 24- or 32-count option. “With your first order, you’ll receive a free shaker bottle, then all you need to do is add 8 ounces of milk or milk-alternative, pour in one of the packets, shake it and refrigerate overnight,” says Tate. “MY PURPOSE IS TO EMPOWER PEOPLE. I’M A PROBLEM SOLVER. I WANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT’S UNDERNEATH THE PAIN.” – ARUNA RAMAMURTHY
Aruna Ramamurthy knows the rugged path of personal transformation. As a young woman in India, she experienced a life-altering event that set her on a mission of self-discovery and healing. Her inspirational story is one of courage and strength, grounded in emotional and physical growth that now blossoms in the wellness work she leads for her clients. As CEO of two companies, Therapeutic Medical Massage and Enlighten Embody Empower Yourself, Aruna's holistic approach helps her clients tap into their own inner resources, guiding them to lasting change. Through her own recovery, Aruna realized the power of the mind-body connection. She focused on breathwork, mindfulness and the importance of tuning into one’s own needs—tools she continues to advocate for today. “Recovery was a turning point for me,” she shares. “Breathing is always the place to start. When we focus on our breath, we calm the nervous system and open ourselves to restoration, both physically and emotionally.” Aruna wears many professional hats—CEO, founder, medical massage therapist, empowerment coach, yoga instructor, hypnotherapist and Neuro-Linguistic Programmer (NLP). But to her, these roles are not separate. They are branches of the
same mission: teaching and guiding individuals to help themselves heal as a whole person. In her medical massage work, Aruna blends technical skill with intuition. Simple and foundational, this union defines her entire practice. Medical massage focuses on relieving pain associated with acute and chronic injuries, but in her experience, relief comes not only from releasing muscle tension, but also from releasing what the muscle has been carrying. “It’s mind, body, and spirit,” she explains. “People come for massage, and when I’m working on them, energetically I can feel what they’re holding. I can tell whether there is anger, sadness, fear, hurt, guilt or shame,” she says. “I help address the root cause rather than just the symptom.” Aruna knows her strengths. “My purpose is to empower people,” she says, her voice warm and steady. “I’m a problem solver. I want to understand what’s underneath the pain.” Through NLP and hypnotherapy, Aruna's coaching philosophy focuses on uncovering beliefs that quietly hold people back—sometimes for decades. Whether it’s passing vital exams, finding clarity in relationships or letting go of stress, she helps clients set and meet goals. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “It’s about tapping into your subconscious mind,” she explains. “Often our minds hold onto patterns and beliefs for years without us realizing. I help people see whatever they don’t want to see, in a safe way. I help people let go of the limiting beliefs they have about themselves.” Aruna looks ahead to this new year as an opportunity for healing and even more growth, but not in a traditional way. “I don't do resolutions,” she says with a laugh, “but I can help set goals. Everybody has goals. When you understand how your mind works, you can take action that aligns with your values.” Beyond one-on-one sessions, Aruna is already planning her annual fall retreat for women. This multi-day event combines yoga, meditation, nourishing food and personal growth activities. Registration is open online. Whether struggling through physical pain, pushing through a personal challenge or striving for a professional goal, Aruna believes that everyone has the capacity for meaningful change and now is the time to take it on. “2026 is your year to get it done—whatever it is you want to accomplish. Healing begins with one quiet breath,” she says.

The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.
3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . 4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
