WOMEN HAVE BEEN SHAPING OUR CULTURE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME. We celebrate six strong and influential leaders who live, study and work among us in West Chester and Liberty. These culture changers see a future that is brighter and move toward that light with persistence and grace. With each choice they make and action they take, these extraordinary women are changing the world, simply by being themselves.
K AT I E L E E Newly appointed as CEO of AP Tech Group Inc., a manufacturer headquartered in West Chester, Katie Lee puts people first. Having worked around the globe, she recognizes the strength that comes from a diverse team. “I think it’s important to know that you aren’t going to always work with someone who is exactly like you,” she says. AP Tech is a family business for Katie, who succeeds her father, the founder of the company. More than that, she considers her colleagues more than just co-workers. “Being a smaller company, it has always been our culture to really be more of a family,” Katie shares. “It was incredibly important, especially last year, to maintain that focus. We value all of our employees so much.” Katie looks forward to leading AP Tech into the future. “I am thrilled that I’ve been given this opportunity to help our team execute our short- and long-term goals. We have a great team.”

MEET SIX LOCAL LEADERS THAT ARE CHANGING THE WORLD
C u lt u r e Changers
D R . C A R O LY N M A Z L O O M I West Chester artist, author, curator and organizer Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi uses her many talents to draw attention to social justice issues. Her journey includes a wide variety of careers, but her life’s work is to ignite change through art. “The arts are important to us as human beings,” Carolyn explains. “It connects us with other people. It teaches us about things we otherwise might not know about. And it gives us joy and pleasure,” she says. Her exquisite pieces tell stories in colors and textures held together with precise, tight stitches. They are beautiful snapshots, sometimes of difficult moments in U.S. history. “Quilts are very important to me,” shares Carolyn. “People think of them as something to keep them warm, but I think of them as more than that. They are historical documents that tell the story not only of our nation, but the people that make them, the communities in which they live, their families.” Carolyn is celebrated as the founder and a 40-year member of the Women of Color Quilters Network, a National Heritage Fellow and most recently, a United States Artists Fellow. Her pieces are held in museums and collections around the world, including the Smithsonian. See her work this summer at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

DR. TISHA MENCHHOFER-GROTE Lovingly known as “Mench” in the halls of Lakota East High School where she has taught for the past 20 years, Dr. Tisha Menchhofer-Grote was selected from hundreds of nominees as the American Legion Educator-of-the-Year for the State of Ohio. Students are drawn to her passionate teaching style as an instructor of Advanced Placement and College Placement Government. “Ultimately, I want my students to feel like they are politically efficacious,” Tisha explains. “I want them to feel that they have a role in our society and community, that they do have a voice—that they should vote, and it actually does matter.” She leads students to follow the news and forge a connection to politics, but in the end, Tisha is opening students’ minds to a world of possibilities. “My goal is that they understand the processes of government, how things work, and that they do have a role in that. When they think, ‘That’s for old people,’ my ultimate goal is to change that thinking,” she says. The award comes at a critical time, when Covidconditions have warped classroom instruction. “Particularly this year, I feel the weight of this award and recognition…it’s that silver lining—something I’ve been yearning for—in such a time of unanswered questions and stress,” shares Tisha.

RENEE BAUER The opportunity to earn the rank of Eagle Scout kind of snuck up on 18-year-old Renee Bauer. 2020 allowed plenty of time to collect 51 badges on her Scouting sash. As a founding member of Troop 1974, the first Scout troop in our area to welcome girls as members just two years ago, she wasn’t fazed by the fact that all of those who preceded her in earning the high honor were males. What got her attention was that a lot of the adults she encountered as she planned her project spoke of wishing they had followed through during their own Scouting days. Renee decided she didn’t want to have any regrets. In August of 2020, Renee completed 101 hours of planning and labor to install a memorial site at American Legion Post 464 to honor soldiers. She’d already earned the top Gold Award as a Girl Scout, and now has added Eagle Scout to her list of achievements—the first female in Southwest Ohio to do so. “Now, I’m double trouble,” Renee says with a smile, her chin held high. Her words of advice are wise beyond her years. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help, but try your best to figure it out for yourself first,” she says. “Challenge yourself.”

OLIVIA MARSHALL When Lakota East High School Junior Olivia Marshall was a freshman, she was nominated by her peers to join Hope Squad, a group that supports mental health and suicide prevention. Now in her third year on Hope Squad, Olivia spreads positivity, encourages inclusivity and watches out for peers that might be at risk for harmful tendencies. “We focus on positivity and work to change the culture of the school to start the hard conversations about mental health,” she says. “One of my biggest drives for Hope Squad is that I want people to feel less alone. I’m big on learning how to really listen and try to lead with love in everything I do.” Last fall, the upbeat teen was surprised with the 2020 Inspire Award, recognizing the impact of her advocacy for mental wellness not only at East, but also as an Ohio representative on the National Hope Squad Council. Kindness is Olivia’s default, and she works to make her school environment a safe place for all students.
S A R A H A B U D A K A R Lakota West High School Senior Sarah AbuDakar is a leader in a teen-led movement to step away from screens and step up to better connections with friends, family and even herself. Sarah’s interest was sparked by a ninth-grade project about the impacts of social media and only grew as she learned more. She currently serves on the Leadership Council Board of the LOG OFF movement, alongside teens from around the world. “One of my biggest hopes is for people to be aware of their relationship with social media,” she says. “I’m a part of the team that is creating school curriculums. It’s important to teach our younger generations about the connection we should build with each other.” Since logging off, Sarah finds more time to enjoy the things she loves to do. “Instead of looking at what my friends are doing, I’m painting, playing the guitar and hanging out with my family more,” she says. Sarah will attend The Ohio State University, where she will continue her efforts to inspire others to look up from their devices. 22

WiM hopes to see more women feel empowered to bring their faith practice to their workplaces, and in pursuit of sharing what they’ve experienced broadly, they’ve hired their first executive director, Catherine Gates. She brings experience from another organization about faith and work, Workmatters, and lots of nonprofit know-how to grow WiM by extending into new communities. “Our goal is to create 250 small groups this year. It’s a God-sized goal!” says Kathy. The group also wants to scale-up two funds they’ve started to help women in and beyond their groups. Dough Starter is a fund that helps women entrepreneurs with some capital to launch a business; their first recipient wanted to launch an art therapy practice and is still running it to this day. “We were able to say, ‘God gave you a dream and a talent, go do it,’” says Kathy. “She just needed a little encouragement, a push, and the financial piece to get started.” Living Bread offers grant money to women who are struggling, often with a job loss that results in upheaval in their home lives. Paying bills and helping people stay in their homes can do so much to get them back on track after a major life change. “With the first woman we helped, God was truly working; she was completely blown away,” says Michelle. “We were able to secure funding to help her pay bills and stay in her home and get her car fixed. She had the confidence to do all these things because she had people supporting her and sharing their ideas. She’s thriving now.” During the pandemic, the in-person groups had to be put on hold, but WiM created new ways to connect. They offer Zoom meetings for prayer, praise and even wellness, with a Zoom yoga class that helps women connect while moving their bodies. They are also holding a large Zoom Connect event on June 17 at 7 p.m., where a guest speaker with experience as both an executive and entrepreneur will share about her journey. All women are welcome on these calls, even if they aren’t part of a WiM group. If women enjoy these experiences, it is easy to launch a new group. “We are so open to helping,” says Kathy. “We’re creating a network where people can do this and not feel alone.” WomeninMarketplace.net

Spreading Kindness with Kindli MEET THE NEW DIGITAL PLATFORM THAT’S REVOLUTIONIZING SOCIAL MEDIA
IN THE UNITED STATES, THE AVERAGE PERSON SPENDS OVER TWO HOURS A DAY ON SOCIAL MEDIA. But in recent years, many of the messages on social media have become increasingly negative. Father of three, Martin Diamond, has been working since 2017 on finding a way to change this. “My problem was looking at social media and seeing what I thought were so many things wrong with it, which I [then] sought to fix, to give it a purpose and make it better,” he explains. Martin, founder and CEO of digital media firm VURIA, LLC, has managed the design and development of thousands of web and mobile projects, marketing initiatives and media productions for companies around the world. He was well-versed to take on this challenge in the digital space. As of last fall, what began as an idea launched as an app, website and social movement. Kindli, as it’s called, is a platform with a purpose—and it’s ready to change the world. Kindli was built to focus on the positive and eliminate the negative. Yes, that means that there’s no bullying or hateful language, and there are no depressing conversations about news or politics. Instead, the narrative is on kindness and positivity. The revolutionary idea was created to propel a sustainable movement that impacts positive global change.

KINDLI CARDS In addition to the platform, Kindli provides a home for the “Pay It Forward” movement with real-world Kindli Cards™, a proprietary, patent-pending method of tracking kind acts worldwide. Martin explains them by using the well-known Starbucks drivethru “pay it forward” experience. Except, in this scenario, a Kindli user

would leave a Kindli Card with the barista, and ask them to give it to the car behind them when they tell them their order was paid for. The card—which has no details on it that would personally identify the card’s giver—has a QR code. If the person who was on the receiving end wanted to say thank you, they could scan the card with their phone and send an anonymous thank you message, photo, or video to the Kindli member. That member could then share that message to their Kindli profile to inspire others to perform their own acts of kindness. Those involved have the option to reveal their identity and connect on the platform if they want. Not only were the cards created to inspire kindness, but to track the number of kind acts they inspired, as well. Kindli founders have a mission of inspiring one billion acts of kindness around the world. MAKING IT A POSITIVE PLACE Anyone can create an account on Kindli and browse for free, but there are safeguards built in to ensure that it remains a safe and positive place. In order to comment or post content—the first time only—members are required to make a one-time, one dollar payment, which Kindli then donates 100% of to one of its charity partners,

TECH SAVVY (CONTINUED) REDEFINING THE INFLUENCER Kindli also aims to change the current perception of what it means to be an influencer on social media. Currently, influencers are generally popular and are often endorsing products. Kindli hopes to alter that definition to someone who changes others’ behavior and inspires them to do good things, and truly makes a positive impact on those around them. “On Kindli, rather than putting the focus on just likes and popularity, our emphasis is more on what have you done to make a difference, and how much of an impact are you making?” he says. Everyone from companies to celebrities to individuals will be able to show the world how much they are an influencer by the number of Kindli cards they’ve given out, based on the Martin Diamond displaying Kindli cards
number that will be linked to their profile. SPOT THE BUS Kindli also now has a dedicated bus, which goes around with what they call their “Street Team,” and often a celebrity, making random stops to do random acts of kindness. This was recently on display when Tim Tebow and the Street Team took the bus around Phoenix and stopped at a gas station, where they surprised customers by paying for their gas, and Tim actually pumped their gas and cleaned their windshields. They also stopped by a teen football practice, where Tim gave the team an inspiring speech, as well as a grocery store where they paid for customers’ groceries, and more. Kindli will also feature Daily Kindness content, a stream of feel-good stories, videos and news. “I hope that this platform helps the well-being of people— their mental health—and it lifts up their spirits and inspires them to serve. I hope this is the platform they turn to, to be uplifted and inspired. [After being on the site], I want people to leave it better than they started their day. This is going to change the world for the better,” says Darleen.
Find Kindli at Kindli.org, or download the mobile app in the App Store or Google Play.
