S PA R K I N G A PA S S I O N FOR PHILANTHROPY BILL, JENNY & SAM MCCLOY
When their second child, Sam, was born Bill and Jenny McCloy experienced “one the greatest and scariest days” of their lives. Sam, now in his mid-twenties, was born with Down Syndrome. With his arrival, the McCloys embarked on a new journey – raising a child with special needs. Their journey has taken them down many paths over the years, but one of the most rewarding paths has led to philanthropy. Shortly after Sam was born, Bill and Jenny were introduced to the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati (DSAGC); that introduction became the spark that ignited their passion for giving back. “I think because we came from humble beginnings, we didn’t really know about the needs of the nonprofits out there,” says Jenny. “Having Sam was an introduction into that world through the DSAGC, which opened the door to other nonprofits in the disability community.” Bill and Jenny work closely with organizations such as Ken Anderson Alliance and Melodic Connections on live, work, and engage opportunities for adults with disabilities. Ken Anderson Alliance, currently serving over 220 individuals a month, is in the midst of building a 22-acre community to provide affordable housing, work, and other supports in an engaging setting. “When you see the smiles on the faces of the individuals and families these organizations serve…that’s where the impact [of giving] is really manifested,” says Bill.
To continue, and expand, their impact Bill and Jenny established a donor advised fund – the McCloy Family Foundation - at the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty. Giving through a donor advised fund allowed them the flexibility to target the charities they wanted to support, while taking advantage of the Foundation’s philanthropic expertise and insight. As a leader in the business community, Bill advocates for the importance of corporate philanthropy, as well, which he says can help leaders establish a positive company culture. “People want to work for companies that have strong ethics and community commitments. We feel strongly about giving back and our advice would be that leaders lead by example. The Foundation can be very effective in ensuring that corporate philanthropy is done correctly, and the company gets the proper benefit of giving back.” Bill and Jenny look forward to seeing the continued impact of their philanthropy and plan to provide for the long-term needs of causes and organizations they care about with a family endowment fund at the Community Foundation. “We’ve never used the term ‘philanthropist’,” said Bill and Jenny, in speaking about their charitable work. “But if our giving inspires one more person to give, then having our name out there will have been worth it.”

A Chemical-Free Home
DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.
Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils
Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.

For more information on starting a chemical-free household, you can browse online resources such as ChemFreeCom.com or find a social media group to join with likeminded people who have some experience from their own trial and error. If you get overwhelmed, remember that you don't have to get rid of all chemicals in one day. Every swap you make is something to celebrate!

BIRD ENTHUSIASTS ARE QUICK TO POINT OUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “BIRDWATCHING” AND “BIRDING;” BIRDWATCHERS LOOK AT BIRDS, WHILE BIRDERS LOOK FOR THEM. For beginners to seasoned ornithophiles, the popularity of this classic hobby is taking flight. West Chester couple Barb and Dave Mackey enjoy vacationing and birding together with a small group of friends. Their interest was kindled by Helen Wright-North and Bill Littleford of Northern

A CLASSIC HOBBY TAKES FLIGHT THIS SPRING
Dave adds, “The health of our bird community throughout the country and the world are important indicators of our environmental health. That’s probably what hooks me in, a sort of a spiritual experience. You are intensely taking in the sounds and sights of nature. That puts you in a whole different place. It’s very soothing and relaxing.” In a complicated world, birding has made a resurgence. Gear up and get out for the birds, even if it’s just a few steps into your own backyard. “A lot of people travel the world to see birds, but you don’t have to go anywhere,” says Helen. “The most amazing thing about it is that there are amazing birds to see, right here in my neighborhood.”

80 ACRES FARMS’ INDOOR FARMING FACILITY TAKES SUSTAINABILITY TO NEW HEIGHTS
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
Growing Green Indoors WHEN YOU LOOK AT TWO PACKAGES OF GREENS AT THE GROCERY, YOU CAN’T SEE THE WHOLE STORY BEHIND HOW THEY’VE GROWN. One mix might have traveled thousands of miles, and while it looks great now, it may soon be wilted. The other, if you are lucky enough to have produce available from 80 Acres Farms, could be grown right here in our county, using renewable energy and advanced technology that allow it to grow indoors year-round. 80 Acres Farms has been innovating farming for more than five years, starting in Cincinnati and recently opening a large production facility in Hamilton. “The City of Hamilton has great water, great clean renewable energy, a great labor pool and great distribution points to many markets,” says Mike Zelkind, CEO of 80 Acres Farms.

Meet…Brood X Cicadas ABOU T:
WHAT I ’ M AT TR AC TE D TO:
They’re back! Billions of periodical cicadas will make an appearance this spring in Ohio and 15 other U.S. states. Last seen in 2004, these cicadas only emerge every 17 years. From mid-May to late June, we will be serenaded by the loud buzzing of the Brood X males. The unusual life cycle of periodical cicadas is largely a mystery. During their adult lives, female cicadas lay eggs on tree branches. Immediately upon hatching, the nymphs drop and burrow into the ground, attach to tree roots and suck sap. After 17 years underground, instinct guides the insects to climb
+ LAWN MOWERS + POWER TOOLS + CHIRPING MALES + FLICKING WINGS OF FEMALES
the trunks of nearby trees, shed their skins and emerge as adults. Adult cicadas live for a fleeting 3-4 weeks of mating. Cicadas don’t sting or bite, but they may mistake motors for mates and humans for small trees. Avoid their attention by being outside when they are least active, in the early morning and at dusk. Wrap young, vulnerable trees with netting by late April. Don’t let them bug you; they’re just looking for love at 100 decibels.
