New Beginnings I’VE MADE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, AND ALMOST EVERY YEAR I’VE BROKEN THEM WITHIN THE FIRST THIRTY DAYS. A few years ago, I tried a new tactic. I set my resolutions for six days a week, with one “free” day each week. Once I started setting my goals this way, I began hitting them regularly, sometimes on all seven days and not even needing to take a “free” day. Setting unattainable goals sets us up for frustration, but having achievable goals and giving ourselves a little grace sets us up for a win. As we turn the page on a new year, it’s a great time to set goals and focus on our physical, mental and emotional health and well-being. This month our stories are all about health and wellness. We meet top school athletes, a local dentist and area

medical experts working hard to keep our kids healthy. We also share ways to keep a more positive mindset and reveal how charitable donations helped make a big impact on area health and wellness needs. If you find that you break your New Year’s resolutions before the end of January, don’t worry—just start again the next day. Each new day is a gift and a chance to start fresh. Enjoy these next 365 days of new beginnings. Cheers to 2021!

“I remember the excitement of knowing that it all paid off. It’s hard to describe—something I’ll never forget.” Competitor Nathan Burns shares about the winning moment. “I remember the excitement of knowing that it all paid off. It’s hard to describe—something I’ll never forget,” he says. The team continued the season with an impressive fourth place finish at the USA Meet of Champions, a regional competition between the country’s top teams. All of the graduating athletes plan to keep running in the future, some of them competing at the collegiate level, others in a less demanding club setting. Their legacy is a love of the sport.

West Chester + Liberty Lifestyle | January 2021

“Whether I run with a team or just by myself, I plan on running,” says Michael. “Running is very good for mental health. Running every day is a natural de-stressor. It relaxes you and it’s fun,” says Zach Beneteau. The 2020 varsity team is an inspiration, but the record-breaking boys aren’t done winning yet. “Stay tuned for track!” proclaims Zach Plotkin with a smile and a nod. Keep your eyes on the finish line this spring, because there’s more to come from these motivated Firebirds.

bullet journaling 101 ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

PHOTOGRAPHY ESTÉE JANSSENS

Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it

can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off.

With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute,

anything we can find to streamline our obligations (and our thoughts) can be a lifesaver! Enter: bullet journaling. It’s equal parts calendar, meal tracker, diary, self care and, well, really anything else that you want to keep tabs on! The “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system,” coined by creator Ryder Carroll, can help you master the art of intentional living—any way you want to.
