You would be hard-pressed to find a more engaging, down-to-Earth or humorous leader than Matt Miller. After spending time with the superintendent of Ohio’s eighth largest district, it’s obvious that he’s the real deal and the district is lucky to have him. In just two years since stepping into the position, Miller has made strides in improving district communication, the use of technology in schools, and creating innovative programs and opportunities for students. His most proud accomplishment, however, has been elevating student engagement. “We’ve amplified the student voice in this district—it’s been huge for us in making decisions,” Miller explains. “Our kids are empowered; we’re listening and we’re helping push what they want to do. That’s been the highlight of the last two years—getting our kids out front.” He adds, “Through the positives of social media, I have seen students become more vocal and engaged. I have kids who reach out on social media every day, and 95% of it is positive.” It’s his social media connection and use of technology that Miller has become known for in the district. In fact, he recently won the Communication Technology Award for Superintendents from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). Although his accomplishments are impressive, Miller is quick to give the credit to his Lakota team. “You cannot do this job, or probably any leadership role, by yourself,” Miller says. “I’m blessed with a really

Tom Urban’s life is a balancing act: work and play, family and community. Only weeks into retirement from 42 years in healthcare, the most recent 26 of those years as the president, CEO and north market leader for Mercy Health, Urban is adjusting to a new lifestyle. “I was really blessed to be a part of Mercy Health for 26 years,” he says. “I am adjusting to a new cadence.” “But I like it,” he quickly adds. Family is a top priority for Urban, a husband and father of three adult children. “I am most proud of my family—of marrying Nancy and raising three kids,” he says. “I’ve tried to be as good of a father and husband as I have tried to be a hospital administrator all of these years,” he says. Urban’s life lessons are about leading a full life, instead of just having a full schedule. “Sometimes you can get so consumed in one role or the other, the professional or personal side,” he says. “You’ve got to stop and smell the roses. Enjoy life to the fullest.” “I’ve tried to live my life in the model that my mom and dad taught me—with humility,” says Urban. “I try to enjoy everyone I come into contact with, both professionally and personally. I don’t know if that’s a headline grabber, but it has worked for me.” Urban urges us to recognize what we have here, in our own backyards. “There’s an abundance of opportunities in West Chester and Liberty for people to live, work and play in a great area,” Urban says. “We were blessed to move here 26 years ago.”

LEN KALTMAN IS KNOWN LOCALLY AS A CORPORATE PHOTOGRAPHER; YOU’VE PROBABLY SEEN HIS PHOTOS REGULARLY IN THIS MAGAZINE. But in his spare time, he enjoys creating high-quality wooden pens in his home wood shop. Len learned about pen-turning at his favorite woodworking store and was quickly making more pens than expected. “When I’d made about 50 pens, my wife suggested that I start selling them,” Len says. Rather than purchasing the wooden “blanks,” which are small rectangular pieces of wood sized for pens, Len purchases large pieces of wood cut from the Buckeye tree (Ohio’s state tree) and cuts his own blanks. “The knots of the buckeye wood, called the burl, are beautiful and unique; each pen is like a fingerprint,” Len says. “No two are exactly alike, which makes every pen a unique gift.” Cutting his own blanks creates opportunities for personalization: Len once was able to make a pen set for a grandfather, father and son, which lined up next to each other in a similar pattern from a single piece of wood. The process requires intricate, time-consuming work, and for Len, it utilizes a different side of creativity from his photography business. While some pens are sold through local shops, Len also showcases his pens online. They make excellent Ohio-themed corporate gifts for clients or executives, as well as a great Father’s Day gift. THE FRINGE COFFEE HOUSE IS DESIGNED WITH A MISSION: TO BREAK DOWN BARRIERS FOR EX-FELONS AS THEY RE-ENTER SOCIETY. With a nine-month customized job training program for ex-convicts, the unique café empowers and equips those on the fringes of society. Fringe founders Patrick and Sarah Davis know what it’s like to be spurned. Both have been incarcerated and experienced the complicated re-entry process. Theirs are comeback tales with plot twists of redemption, forgiveness and kinship. They give hope to local inmates through Scars and Bars, a music- and arts-driven mentorship program. The Davis’ also lead The Fringe Church. “Our mission is to meet people on the fringe, help them work through their issues and be willing to walk with them for the long haul,” Patrick explains. Patrick and Sarah identify a gap in the support offered to the incarcerated upon release: it is difficult to get a good job with a criminal record. “It was the missing link,” says Patrick. “I’ve been doing prison work for 15 years. I’ve seen tremendous transformations in people, but I kept observing the same problem over and over. No one wants to hire ex-felons. Instead of sitting around griping about the problem, we decided to create a business that will hire them.” Many of the skills used to run a small business are new to ex-convicts. “All of these skills can be transferable to a lot of different occupations,” says Patrick. “We want for them to be the best candidates for any type of employment once they finish our program.”

Beyond hiring ex-felons, Fringe is dedicated to providing a network of social support and personalized resources designed to help them overcome barriers to success. “Parenting classes, tattoo removal, education… everything that we do, it’s all designed around empowerment,” Patrick says. “Goal number one is for our employees to find a sense of family and wholeness—to know their worth and value. We are committed to ‘the slow work of God.’” Even the walls at The Fringe Coffee House have a story to tell. Covered in street art, they scream in color, poetry and lyrics. Framed photos of convicted felons beckon with their eyes. “We wanted the building to be an indoor street art gallery,” Patrick explains. “Visually, the idea is that it tells the stories of people whose stories haven’t mattered. Everything in there is done intentionally to provoke thought, creativity and growth.”

A stage is set to host live music, comedy and poetry events. The stairs are covered with sheet music, leading to the second floor’s professional recording studio and creative arts space. “On the second floor of the coffeehouse, we have created a space where at-risk kids can learn an instrument, record and produce music, and learn audio and video, all free of charge,” Patrick shares. “It’s a positive place for kids, where they can use these tools to find their voice and tell their stories in creative ways.” The Fringe Coffee House is breaking down barriers for ex-felons, cup by cup.
