Inside this issue we look at a transformation that took a formal and dated family room and turned it into a welcoming and comfortable space, while incorporating a more current, sophisticated style. For many families, the journey to get a home is a long and difficult process and there isn’t enough money left to provide adequate furnishings. AUTISM ADVOCACY PROJECT CONCERT ON MARCH 2 Lynx Project, which is a nonprofit art song initiative, will present their second Autism Advocacy Project, a world-premiere concert of newly commissioned art song with text by youth with autism who live in the Cincinnati area. The concert will take place on Saturday, March 2 at Sycamore High School Auditorium. Saturday’s concert is family-friendly, interactive, open to the public at large, and features a pre-concert art-making workshop with Visionaries+Voices, as well as a post-concert dessert reception. A sensory relief area will be available for patrons who may need to come and go from the concert. West Chester blogger Sarah Jacob created a DIY charging station (using an old breadbox) and has shared her step-by-step process for easy replication. Jacob blogs under the pseudonym “Mainstream Minimalist” and this DIY project she designed is the perfect example of removing clutter to create a clean environment. Though you can find many retailers who offer charging stations, Jacob says they are often unattractive and utilitarian—not to mention costly. If you’re looking for something attractive, that can hold all your family’s devices (including laptops) and can be powered off when not in use—you may want to try building your own charging station with Jacob’s step-by-step guide. After finding a rustic breadbox at a local antique mall, Jacob knew she had the beginning of the perfect charging station. With just a little paint, holes drilled for cords and a new power strip, she created her own charging station for just $42 (breadbox: $20; power strip: $18; paint: $4). 1. Select your box. Jacob used a breadbox but recommends getting something to fit your style: basket, box, trunk or cabinet. Whatever you choose, be sure it’s large enough to fit all your devices. 2. Drill holes in the back so the power strip’s cord(s) can slip through en route to your outlet.

3. Purchase a power strip that fits all your electronic devices and their unique cords (most are likely USB cords). The power station featured is from Amazon. 4. Apply a few coats of paint to your box. Jacob selected light blue chalk paint to fit with her home’s décor.

5. Once the paint is dry and your power station is in hand, you’re ready to plug the devices in and test out your new charging station. Jacob suggests using cable clips and labels to keep cords organized inside the box.

The goal was to turn her traditional space into a more ‘transitional’ area, according to Wright, highlighting a softer and more modern look. Wright utilized grays and off whites to give the room a neutral look because Brandner enjoys decorating for each season. “We’ve been living here for over 30 years and I’ve done everything in that room, so I just wanted neutral,” Brandner says. “Now I can add color seasonally so come spring I can add yellows, at Christmas I can add my colors that way. TWO TO THREE PERCENT OF CHILDREN IN THE UNITED STATES DON’T HAVE BEDS. In Butler County, that’s at least 8,000 kids, sleeping in makeshift spots each night. Local activists are uniting around a motto that is changing those statistics: “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.” Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a nonprofit organization that leads volunteers to build beds to give to children in need, started its Butler

and delivering the beds to local children. “The money we get from the sponsors pays for the wood, mattresses, sheets, comforters and pillows,” Mike explains. “Volunteers deliver the bed, assemble it, and set it all up so kids can go to bed in it that night.” There’s no shortage of need. The demand for beds exceeds the supply. “Right now, we have a 200-bed waiting list,” Mike says. The SHP team leads from the heart, motivated by the impact on the children. “When the kids see their rooms all set up with the new beds, it’s really special,” Eileen says. CONTINUED >

“The deliveries are an eye-opener,” Watts adds. “You see all different situations. The kids are fired up. I remember a two-year-old who said he was going to bed as soon as we left—it was only four o’clock in the afternoon. The look on the kids’ faces, that’s something you don’t forget. Both the kids and parents are so thankful.” “My childhood upbringing drew me to this,” Mike says. “I always try to give back and be involved in the community. My hope is that this experience plants a little seed in a kid’s heart and when they grow up, they’ll want to give back, too,” he adds. SHP is entering 2019 with big goals. “I want to hit the 1,000 mark by the end of the year,” Mike says. “We would love to have a warehouse where we could store tools and supplies with enough room to host Build Days,” he dreams aloud. “We have the requests,” says Eileen. “We really want to connect with those families that need the beds the most.”
