I’ve always loved the arts, and I’m excited to see that enthusiasm carrying over to the next generation of my family. I often joke that I’m a publisher by day and a chauffeur by night, driving my children to their wide array of activities. My boys both study hard in school and play sports, but we also place a huge emphasis on the arts in our household. So, my weekly stops involve taking my kids to lessons for piano, drums and guitar, and rehearsals for musicals, showcases and our church’s youth band. I love the buzz of energy that the arts bring to our home. This month we’ve featured people and opportunities in and around town to inspire you and your family to explore our local arts scene. CINDERELLA’S CLOSET READY FOR VOLUNTEERS AND DONATIONS The annual Cinderella’s Closet is scheduled for March 8-9, where local high school girls have the opportunity to shop for prom dresses, shoes and accessories before the beloved dance. Many of the “princesses” who shop at Cinderella’s Closet are from Lakota East and West. In order to make the event happen, the program relies on donations and volunteers from the community. Although downtown Cincinnati possesses many historical venues, you don’t need to travel far to experience the arts. Right in your own backyard, Butler County is rich with culture. Experience dynamic classical music with the West Chester Symphony Orchestra. Enjoy live theater and more at the Fitton Arts Center in Hamilton. Visit the Sorg Opera House in Middletown, which has housed some of the best musicals and dramas in the country. All around us, art is thriving.

West Chester Symphony Orchestra Conducted by Susan Schirmer, the West Chester Symphony Orchestra (WCSO) is a full orchestra of more than 60 members. This nonprofit organization has been providing free orchestral concerts to the public for over two decades. The group is comprised of volunteer musicians ages 15 and up and is always seeking new members. WCSO has grown dramatically in skills and size since their launch in June 1997, and now plays a variety of music from classical to Broadway and pop. You can take in one of their many free concerts held at Keehner Park each summer, always open to the public. The WCSO also performs year-round at local events, retirement homes, shopping centers and at an annual holiday concert hosted with the Lakota East Choirs. WCSO’s next concert is a Macy’s Sampler Performance on Saturday, February 16, at MidPointe Library in West Chester from 12-5 p.m. The price, as usual, is free. You can support WCSO through donations on their website or at their annual fundraiser concert event on Saturday, April 13, which includes a show, dinner, live auctions and more. Fitton Center The Fitton Center for Creative Arts is a robust community resource housing all aspects of the creative arts. Experience live music, theater, dance, art exhibitions and community events all in one place in Hamilton. The Fitton Center also hosts educational classes open to all ages, including drawing and mixed media, mosaic, painting and printmaking, pottery, photography and yoga classes. This nonprofit organization began as a community arts project in 1993 and was formed through the support of residents and community leaders in Hamilton. The Center expanded in 2000, growing 40 percent larger. Now in the 2018-2019 season, a 150-seat cinema with a 24-foot wide screen and surround sound was added along with an offering of sensory-friendly screenings in conjunction with Butler County’s developmental disabilities program. This month be sure to visit the Road Trip art exhibition curated by the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum where baseball and art collide. It runs now through April 5. The Fitton Family Fridays performing arts series has proven most popular and sold out numerous shows this season. On Friday, February 8, The Lexington Children’s Theatre performs “Apollo to the Moon” at 7:30 p.m., a space race story from the eyes of a young man’s dream to become an astronaut. Sorg Opera House The Sorg Opera House, a National Historic Landmark in Middletown, served the local community for over a century and once attracted some of the country’s finest dramatic and musical acts. After undergoing repairs and renovations in recent years, the opera house is once again delivering unique musical talent to Butler County. Opened in 1891 by one of Middletown’s first industrialists and first multimillionaires, Paul J. Sorg, its ornate design was created by the famed Cincinnati Music Hall architect, Samuel Hannaford. Music Hall even donated seats during the ongoing renovations. The Sorg Opera House is now owned and managed by the Sorg Opera Revitalization Group (SORG), an all-volunteer nonprofit organization established to provide programming and services that make an essential contribution to the cultural economy, economic revitalization, education and quality of life of Middletown. The Sorg Opera House is a historic theater which holds about 730 guests on the main floor and first balcony, with up to 1,000 once the second balcony repairs are completed. SINCE SHE BEGAN CLASSES AT THREE YEARS OLD, WEST CHESTER'S EMMA KRUSLING HAS DREAMED OF DOING WHAT SHE LOVES MOST—PIROUETTES, PLIÉS AND ARABESQUES ONSTAGE AS A PROFESSIONAL BALLET DANCER. Now, she is dancing her way to her dreams in a unique program at Cincinnati Ballet's Otto M. Budig Academy. Krusling’s dance teacher at a local studio was instrumental in helping her follow her passion. After years of classes, the teacher encouraged her to find a more intense program in 2016. “Mary St. Romain, Director at SDA Studios, sent me off with her blessing to Cincinnati Ballet Academy,” Krusling recalls. Only one year later, at the young age of 16, Krusling’s dreams fell into reach when she was invited into the inaugural year of Cincinnati Ballet’s Professional Training Division (PTD). PTD is a rigorous program of instruction and rehearsal, modeled after the professional company’s schedule. It includes immersion in a wide repertoire of classes and coaching with the opportunity to train and dance with Cincinnati Ballet’s Second Company and even its professional Company, if selected by staff. “Getting that letter in the mail to be in the Training Program was seeing my dreams coming true,” Krusling shares. “All of a

sudden, I was going from picking what classes I wanted to take the next year in high school to imagining spending every day at the studio. It was a huge step. I didn’t think something like this would be even possible for me until after I graduated high school.” As precise as it is graceful, ballet requires a commitment to training and technique. Krusling works full days in the studio and rehearsals. “We dance from 9 a.m. until 5:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some days I just have to come home and collapse,” she says with a laugh and a sigh. “The thing with ballet is that no dancer is perfect. Even the simple stuff we do every day, like a plié—we do ten million of them—but there’s always something to improve,” she says. A senior at Lakota West High School, Krusling fits in her academic studies and social life around her daily focus on dance. “I take all of my studies through Cincinnati State, so I am getting high school and college credit right now,” she explains. “I do classes online, at night and on the weekends. On Fridays, if I’m lucky, I’ll maybe go out with friends. I don’t get to do that as often as I’d like, but I like staying connected with them.” Krusling is currently planning for her next stage. “I’ve applied to colleges, auditioning for dance programs and I’ll also be auditioning to companies across the country. I’m excited to find my place—that wants me and that I fit into—to perform, and share what I love.” She so enjoys what she is doing that Krusling doesn’t view her busy lifestyle as a sacrifice, but rather a gift. “I feel blessed. I’m extremely happy to be pursuing what I want to do and meeting all of these other dancers from across the country,” she says. “I love performing.”
