1. R AISE THE ROOF

Winter ice and spring storms are tough on your roof. Do you notice damaged shingles, algae streaks or granules in your gutters? If so, it’s time for a new roof. “If you get the right shingles, and the right crew to install it, you should get 30 years out of your roof,” Wolf explains. Dare to show some style with your roof. Wolf and Knutson install a lot of architectural shingles, also known as dimensional shingles. “They give the house more of a pop—a 3D kind of look—instead of flat. It not only looks better, but they provide better protection and are more durable,” Wolf says. 2. BIGGER GUT TERS ARE BE T TER During the rain of spring, gutters help keep water, and the damage it could bring, at bay. Knutson advises that bigger gutters are better. “The bigger the gutter, the bigger the downspout, the quicker that water is going to get away from your house,” he says. “A six-inch gutter will serve better than something smaller.” Beware the mature trees that line many of our neighborhood streets. “It only takes one or two trees to wreak havoc on your gutters and downspouts. We offer gutter guards to help,” Knutson explains. 3. ST YLISH SIDING Most homeowners don’t pay attention to their home’s siding unless it is warped or broken. Updated siding can bring both function and fashion. Consider siding to add colorful or decorative accents to

your home. Highlight gables or preserve a historical look, all while insulating your home and lowering energy bills. “We can do lap siding or shaker-style shingle siding to add accents,” Wolf explains. “Titan can help guide color and style selections,” he adds. Titan’s top choices for siding replacement are fiber cement or vinyl siding. “Vinyl siding is the most cost-effective choice,” Knutson says. 4. WINDOW DRESSING Windows frame our view of the world. Windows in older homes are often drafty and difficult to use. Even newer homes, especially those with builder-grade options, could use new windows to update style and safety. DIRECTIONS: CRAB SALAD 1. Peel and mince shallots and garlic. 2. Slice the cherry tomatoes in half and place into a mixing bowl along with shallots and garlic. 3. Add the lime juice and zest, 3 tbsp. olive oil, crab, cilantro leaves, salt and pepper. 4. Gently mix ingredients until well blended. TOAST 1. Brush the wheat bread with remaining olive oil on both sides. 2. Place bread on either a hot grill or hot sauté pan and toast until bread is desired color. 3. Place toast on plate, then carefully top toast with crab salad mixture—season with salt and pepper.

PARTING THOUGHTS AN ORGANIZED HOME IS A HAPPY HOME. I have found that when my kitchen is clean, laundry is folded, papers are filed and drawers are closed, our house (and everyone in it) seems to function better. Unfortunately for my husband, these simple tasks aren’t my second nature. I am a queen of procrastination, and more often choose Netflix® over organizing. However, I know that running a household is not for the faint of heart (shout out to all the women and men whose daily job is to maintain a thriving home and family). So, here are a few tips that help maintain order and create calm amidst the chaos of our busy lives. 1. PURGE I’ve been known to have some “collections” of useless items. Hundreds of pens fill our home (yet neither of us ever seems to find one when we need it) and we have more dishes than we could use in a year. If you can relate, spend a weekend purging and you might be surprised how quickly organization can fall into place. Focus on one room at a time and sort items into three piles: keep, donate or toss. It’s so easy to leave a cup on the table or towel on the floor, but taking the extra two seconds to put them away means you can come home to a clutter-free house each day. And remember, if you have kids, they mimic what you do so save yourself the headache of having to train them to do the same. 3. MAXIMIZE SPACE
