For love of the arts. M

y love of the fine arts started when I was five years old. My mother took me to see a community theatre production of Annie. I was in awe of the singing and dancing that took place on that stage. Just a year later the movie Annie came out in theaters, and I was hooked on the music. No record in my collection was played more than my Annie album–often with my sister and friends joining me in singing every word to every song. At that time, I set a goal: to act out my favorite movie, Annie, on the stage. At age 10, that dream came true when I was cast in our community theatre production of Annie. The months spent with the cast, rehearsing and performing, were some of my favorite childhood memories. The fine arts give us an opportunity to express our creativity and convey emotion, often without words. A dance can bring a spectator to tears. An uplifting song can pull someone out of sadness. A painting or photograph can take viewers to another world. The ways we can express and enjoy art are endless. This month, West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle goes behind the scenes with a variety of local artists. You’ll meet an inspiring young man who uses dance to overcome obstacles in his life. You’ll get to know a Lakota graduate who has been living out her Broadway dream on stages across America. We’ll introduce you to POP Revolution, a local art gallery and framing store with two area locations and a variety of unique artwork. This month’s Giving Back story showcases the InsideOut Studio, an organization of the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities that provides a creative outlet for artists. This month we also transition a very important role on our team, our Editor. I want to personally express my gratitude and appreciation for Tera Michelson’s services as our Editor these past ten months. Her careful eye and uplifting voice were woven throughout our pages. While her schedule will no longer allow her the time needed to serve as Editor, you’ll continue to see her stories each month as a contributing writer. It is with great excitement that we welcome Abbey McMahon as our new Editor. Abbey is a local talent who has been part of our team for many months. You can learn more about Abbey on page 14. leven years ago I sat in Mr. Dean Hume’s classroom at Lakota East High School and learned that I was going to become co-editor of the high school’s magazine–the Spark. I was elated. I was shocked. I was completely blown away that he had chosen me, out of a staff of more than 100 students, to lead this 80-page, award-winning magazine to its monthly publication. The selection felt like an honor. I was over the moon. And yes, as you might have guessed, I was a bona fide nerd in high school. While I may not have been the coolest girl at Lakota East, I was madly in love with working on the Spark. I spent deadline weekends inside the school’s computer lab (a crowded room of 20 temperamental Mac computers), and chose to forego football games and parties for time spent writing, editing and coaching our newest staff members. I loved interviewing fellow students and writing features about their lives outside of the classroom. I loved learning from our team of designers and photographers, and going to journalism conventions to meet kids from all over the country, who were equally as passionate about their high school publications. To say I felt on top of the world is an understatement. A part of me may or may not have felt like I was the editor of the New York Times at just 17 years old. Fast forward several years to my time as an undergrad at Miami University, when it dawned on me that there might not be a lot 14

of money in the journalism industry (unless of course you ARE the editor of the New York Times). Upon graduating from Miami, I had a marketing degree in my hand and very much looked forward to climbing the corporate marketing ladder. Although I still loved writing, I was comfortable leaving my future journalism career by the wayside to become a young professional inside of corporations. For six years I spent time with multiple companies, building marketing plans, creat-

ing content and planning events. I had fun and learned a lot, but was yearning for something more. Last October I left a full-time job to start my own marketing company, which now includes a lot of–you guessed it–writing. Some people told me I was crazy for going out on my own, but I’ve never felt more excited in my life. When I had the opportunity to write for West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle last January, I jumped at the chance to interview Chef Michelle Brown of Jag’s, and was thrilled to write my first of many

stories. Each month I’ve continued to re-find my inner journalist, writing about unique people within our community. I’ve truly enjoyed every second of it. That’s why when our Publisher, Michelle Moody, asked me if I would like to become Editor of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle, I was once again filled with the same excitement and elation that I felt eleven years ago in front of Mr. Hume at Lakota East. The school girl inside of me jumped for joy at the thought of leading a team of amazing writers and photographers to produce this magazine. I've been well trained by our former editor, Tera Michelson, who is an exceptional leader and one of the most down-to-earth people you’ll ever meet. She has worked tirelessly with Michelle over the past year to build a strong team of committed community members who produce the content of this magazine each month. I hope that you, our devoted readers, will continue to enjoy the magazine each issue, learning about your fellow community members, finding new hot spots around the area and enjoying uplifting stories about the ever-growing West Chester and Liberty Township. Never in a million years did I imagine I’d be back in West Chester, editing a magazine, but I couldn’t be more excited for this next adventure. It feels even better than the New York Times.

Into the Art Revolution

ou may think that if you want to get a taste of art you have to travel to downtown Cincinnati and beyond; however, one local business is bringing that experience close to home. Tucked behind the walls of a quaint storefront on East Main Street in Mason, lies one of the area's best kept secrets: POP Revolution. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a cozy sitting area surrounded by abstract sculptures and images, all of which are locally made. The space is guaranteed to make an art enthusiast or maker feel at home. The goal is to make art readily accessible and to make the community feel included. Owner Francis Michaels achieves these objectives in more ways than one. “A lot of people think art is not for them,” Michaels says. But for Michaels, he has done everything within his store to disprove that. 16

POP Revolution is an all-inclusive art service and experience. The building, which sits at 105 East Main Street in downtown Mason, is the home of two art galleries that are free and open to the public: POP Revolution Gallery and the Artist Lounge. Both galleries welcome new shows each month along with a monthly open house that occurs every third Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The open houses provide a unique way for visitors to view work from local up-and-coming artists while socializing with both the artists and fellow enthusiasts. Michaels uses events like this to invite the entire community to share in the enjoyment of art, and to disprove the idea that “art is not for them.” “[A lot of people] think it’s really expensive,” Michaels says, but he wants to show the community it doesn’t have to be, and he personally understands the importance of keeping costs low. Born in the midst of the market crash in 2008, POP Revolution, along with Michaels himself, has persevered while others closed their doors. “It was rough the first couple of years,” Michaels recalls. “When everyone else was closing their doors, we struggled through it and got through it.” The triumph was attainable due to Michaels' ambition and desire to make art a reality. Since then, POP Revolution has only grown, with a second location opening last year in Hamilton. Ups and Downs with Dancer Robert Weatherington

ancer Robert Weatherington defies gravity. As if he has springs in his feet, he glides through the air in a nimble leap, touches his hands to his pointed toes, and softly lands with a satisfied smile. Even his attitude defies gravity. Despite the obstacles that life delivers, nothing seems to bring this talented young man down. Dance is not a hobby for Weatherington—it’s a way of life. During his junior year at Badin High School, just two short years ago, he discovered lyrical dance as he exited West Chester Academy, where he took piano lessons. “A TV monitor caught my eye,” he says. “I saw the dance team doing a dance. I don’t know why I was drawn to it so intensely, but I made an impulse decision to sign up for dance classes right then and there.” Lyrical dance, Weatherington’s favorite among a long list of styles in which he is trained, offers him the challenge of connecting with an emotional story line.

“Lyrical [dance] has always been my favorite. It’s so emotionally freeing. I like the idea of telling a story without words,” he explains. Piper VanDerveer, paired with Weatherington for lyrical dance competition, agrees. “We only started dancing together last year, but right away it was like Robert and I had been dancing together for a long time,” VanDerveer says. “When you dance with a partner, you’re supposed to be able to trust them. Robert and I really understand each other and the music. Dancing with Robert is like dancing with an old friend.” Weatherington and VanDerveer rehearsed seven to eight hours each week at West Chester Academy in preparation for competition. Weatherington jumps into challenges with both graceful feet. In addition to dancing, he plays multiple musical instruments, is a competitive speed stacker for Team USA, and has even mastered the Rubik’s Cube. He has learned that keeping his free time filled and occupying his mind with new tasks helps him achieve a calm, soothing state. Diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive and Anxiety disorders and as a victim of bullying, he hasn’t always greeted each day with sunny hope. With the help of therapy, medicine, attentive parents and great coaches and teachers, he sees each moment as full of possibility and adventure. “I like the idea of tomorrow. Every 24 hours, we get a fresh start,” he says with wide eyes and a grin. Part of his positive outlook has been achieved by learning to focus and concentrate on life's tasks. “When I concentrate on something intensely, it helps my brain stop,” he describes, “like a meditative state. Puzzles, music, dance…” And stacking cups—very quickly. When other eighth grade peers were excelling at football and basketball, Weatherington found that even though he was scrawnier than other boys, he had a knack for sport stacking—competitions to stack and unstack cups in specific sequences as fast as possible. He competes with Team USA at competitions around the world, completing the stack sequence in less than six seconds. Weatherington also races the clock to solve Rubik’s Cubes and a variety of other three-dimensional puzzles, decoding them in mere seconds. He began studying piano, his main instrument, at age five, taught by music teacher Patsy Rabinowitz, Director of West Chester Academy. He also plays guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin and drums. “From a young age, Robert was one to observe and do. If he sees and likes something, whether it be playing an instrument, singing, acting, dancing, gymnastics or cup stacking, he puts his mind to learning the skills to master that activity for himself,” Rabinowitz says. “It has been a joy to watch Robert grow from a little pre-schooler into a fine young man, and it has been a privilege to partner with Robert’s parents to help guide and shape his direction in life,” she adds. During the school year, Weatherington would awake early to practice piano, his music serving as an alarm for his parents. CONTINUED >

“My mom thinks I should major in music, but I really don’t want to do that. I don’t want to resent someone telling me how to play my music,” he explains. “It’s too personal for me.” Music is an important outlet for him, but it’s dance that has taken center stage in Weatherington’s life. This fall, he leaps into studies at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, with plans for a double major in Dance and Social Work. “Four out of my five classes my first semester will be dance. I am looking forward to constantly having the emotional release that dance gives me,” he says. In spite of all of his leaping and spinning in midair, Weatherington is known for being downto-earth. His humble and helpful spirit inspires those around him. He uses the pain of his past to overcome obstacles. “I didn’t have anyone like me to help me, so I want to be that person to help others,” he says of his aspirations for a career in Social Work, possibly counseling those struggling with mental illness. “I know about different therapies first-hand. Instead of medicines, I want to be able to prescribe a Rubik’s Cube,” he says. “If I can help just one person, it makes all that I’ve been through valid—it gives all of what I have experienced purpose,” he adds. Rabinowitz says, “Robert is an inspiration to many because he is not afraid to shoot for the stars. He sets big goals for himself and starts achieving them one step at a time. He knows that with the arts, there is no such thing as perfection. There is always more to learn and more ways to creatively put skills together for a new expression. He also knows how to enjoy and celebrate the moments along the way.” “Every emotion I’ve experienced can be used to create something beautiful,” he says. “People may say that I’m inspirational, but I don’t really view myself that way. I still don’t know why you want to do a story about me. I’m just a normal guy, trying to do my thing,” shrugs Weatherington. “I’m just living my life the best way I can.” From the top of his poised head to the tips of his pointed toes, Weatherington is emotion in motion. To watch him dance is to experience beauty and grace and feel a connection to the deep feelings of his personal history. Robert Weatherington’s story is just beginning.

LOCAL WOMAN LANDS CAREER IN THEATRE ARTICLE KATIE GRAVELY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

he walked into an audition her freshmen year at Lakota West for the spring musical, The Sound of Music. That was the first time director Kim Eldridge encountered Lauren Sprague. “I didn’t know anything about her,” Eldridge says. “She walked in and blew me away with her acting, her dancing, her singing. She was not a typical freshman, that’s for sure.” Come to find out, Sprague had been in dance classes, voice lessons and much more for years. As unusual as it was for a ninth

grader to land a main role, Eldridge cast the young Sprague as Liesl, the eldest Von Trapp sister. “She was such a joy to work with, humble and beautiful; she had everything going for her,” Eldridge boasts. Throughout high school, Sprague took Eldridge’s acting and musical theatre classes, where she learned how to excel in auditions, rehearsals and performances. “I was so lucky to go to Lakota West, which had an incredible high school theatre program which helped prepare me for my college auditions,” Sprague says. “It was that preparation that helped me get into [Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music (CCM)] which was a dream come

true, being one of the top programs in the country for musical theatre.” Sprague was one of only a handful selected to attend CCM out of a pool of 800 young women. During college Sprague took a senior trip to New York City to perform in front of casting directors, agents and industry leaders. From that audition, Sprague got an agent and moved to New York after graduating from CCM in 2010. “Moving to New York to pursue theatre is a big dream with a lot of reality checks along the way,” Sprague says. “One of the biggest surprises to me was just how many talented people there are. There is such

a saturation of actors looking for jobs, who are all incredibly talented, and [there’s] not a whole lot of jobs for such a huge number of people.” Sprague’s strategy was to go on as many auditions as possible in order to be seen by as many casting directors as possible. She says once a casting director recognizes you, they start to get to know you better. Her first job booked was a production of The Producers at a theatre in Florida. Fast forward to today; Sprague just finished her third Broadway National Tour of Cinderella, a show that’s given her the opportunity to perform right here in Cincinnati at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. If you caught Sprague on the Cinderella tour, you would have seen her in the ensemble or as the understudy of the Fairy Godmother and Wicked Stepmother. She has also starred in the Broadway National Tour of The Wizard of Oz, as the Wicked Witch’s understudy and the female swing, meaning she understudied all of the female ensemble women (eight characters). The hard work that Sprague has put into her career has come from a work ethic she developed at an early age. When she’s not on tour, Sprague is consistently working on personal development by going to auditions, working out and getting into classes. During her “free” time she enjoys spending time with her husband, Michael Linger, who she met in show choir at Lakota West. Ultimately, Sprague knew that she wanted to be in this industry for life.

“I look back at my time at West so fondly. I learned so much from Kim [Eldridge]. She continues to be a mentor and inspiration to me,” Sprague says. “She really allowed me to find my own voice and style while molding me and others as our teacher and director. For Eldridge, after 19 years as theatre director at Lakota West, she’s stepping out of the role, but she couldn’t be more proud of Sprague. “It’s awesome to see this,” she says. “It is just amazing; although, at the time, I knew that if she pursued this, she would do it and she could do it.”

caves and on rock, humans have tried to express the things of value, the things that are thoughtful, and the things that escape words through an artistic medium. French artist Henri Matisse proclaimed that â€œcreativity takes courage,â€? and there is no greater demonstration of that courage in our community than at the InsideOut Studio. The InsideOut Studio provides a supportive environment for artists with developmental disabilities, and operates because of a partnership between the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Easter Seals TriState. There are about 40 artists who participate at the studio, which is located in downtown Hamilton in the old Elder Beerman building. The studio is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Each day brings together a tapestry of different artists and visitors, making the perfect combination for an exciting, fulfilling adventure. The studio offers opportunities for artists to produce, market and receive an income from their creative works, encouraging the artists to be an integral part of the community. Their work is displayed in revolving gallery exhibitions at businesses, art galleries and craft shows, including the annual Lakota East Holiday Arts & Crafts Show.

Whether they’re a first-timer or have been part of InsideOut studio for years, a glimpse at their work showcases the talent and stories of the artists. The McCullough Hyde Hospital’s Healing Art Project recently purchased a painting from Alphonso Rowe to be included as a permanent part of their art collection. Alphonso spends most of his time at the studio painting. He is very sensitive to the artistic process, and has the gift of layering paint and

brush strokes to create depth and atmosphere.

Ashley understands abstraction. She will take an image that she finds interesting and add her personality to it. Ashley’s personality spills over with exuberance and laughter. Her artwork has been selected to be displayed on the underpass on High Street in Hamilton. This is exactly what Brown hopes to encourage. “We hope to get involved with other local arts organizations that will help our artists and their artwork lose the disability stigma and simply showcase their talents,” Brown says. Currently, all of the artists are focused on creating ornaments for the upcoming holiday season. During the past several years, the fused glass and clay ornaments have become collector’s items in the area. This year’s collection will feature new designs and expressions of celebration for the holiday season. The retail side of the studio is managed by Sharon Sheets and Rebecca Clark, and each artist receives 50% of the sale price of their works, with the remaining 50% going back into the studio budget to pay for operational expenses. Brown says that the artists “love the new studio and the chance to get to interact with our customers in the retail store. … We are invigorated by the pride they have in their ability to create beautiful art.” American painter Edward Hopper once commented, “If I could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.” Stop by the studio and express in words your thankfulness to artists who have the courage to make our community better. 28

was a band geek. At least, that’s what they called it back in my high school days. On Friday nights during football season, I proudly donned a hat that made me look a lot like a human Q-tip and marched around the field at halftime with a hundred or so other committed musicians. Marching band was one of the peaks of my high school career. I loved the camaraderie that bonded us together—sweaty rehearsals under the August sun, making fun of the trumpet section, and the character-building experience of modestly changing clothes in a bus seat. Together, we learned that the show must go on—100-degree heat, freezing rain, tornadic winds (sometimes all in one night)—nothing slows down the band. My high school band director drilled a Clint Eastwood quote into our heads until it became a motto, “Improvise, adapt and overcome!” I’ve carried the lessons of teamwork, resilience and responsibility into my adulthood, and even my parenting. As of this year, the beginning of my oldest child’s high school career, I am now a band

mom. My band geek husband and I couldn’t have been more proud when she announced that she was interested in marching band. Marching band is serious business in these parts. There’s rookie camp, pre-band camp, band camp and postband camp. The students have warmups, cool downs and water breaks. The calendar is filled with trainings, rehearsals, trips and competitions. Being a member of the marching band means that my daughter has a new set of “parents”—Band Moms and Pit Crew Dads. They wear buttons picturing their students with instruments and tote stadium seats to every football game and band competition within a 400-mile radius. These well-trained volunteers organize props and instruments, uniforms and meals. As my daughter matures, I reluctantly recognize that she is her own person and won’t always do what I think she should do. I rejoice that she is following in her parents’ footsteps for the experience of marching band. I hope she’ll fondly look back one day

and appreciate the lessons and the laughter from this life-changing time. I drop her off at rehearsals and watch until I can no longer see her pony tail swing back and forth as she shuffles into a crowd of young adults who look way too old to be her peers. Time with her is limited now. I’m afraid I’ll blink and I’ll be watching her move into a college dorm. For now, I’m relishing band mom status. Maybe someday soon I will graduate to official “Band Mom.” Until then, I’ll put on the button of my flute-playing rookie, wait patiently for the football team to get off the field and cheer my heart out for my girl and her band. If only I could figure out which marching cotton swab is her?!
