elcome to the one-year anniversary issue of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle! It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since our first issue arrived in homes. Last November we launched West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle with a mission to engage and inspire our communities, raise awareness of local charities and help area businesses grow. We thank you, our faithful readers, for welcoming us into your homes each month and helping us to accomplish these goals. Some of you might be reading West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle for the first time. In honor of our one-year anniversary we have expanded our distribution. So if this is your first issue, we welcome you! I want to express my personal gratitude to our advertising partners. We celebrate the 40th anniversary of the West Chester • Liberty Chamber Alliance and the 225th anniversary of our neighbor to the west, Hamilton. We talk with two local couples, one celebrating their golden anniversary while another celebrates their first. November also brings a very important date, Veteran’s Day. We want to thank all of our veterans and active military personnel who have served our county bravely and selflessly. Inside this issue we remember a local fallen hero, Corey Hood. We also provide details on a local resource, the Butler County Veterans Service Commission. We have great plans for our second year, and we can’t wait for you to see what lies ahead. West Chester Hospital's annual Fall Golf Outing successfully raised funds to support the hospital’s Innovation Fund, which allows for the development and implementation of cutting-edge technology and programs to enhance patient care. On September 23, teams enjoyed contests, prizes and creative costumes, in addition to a round of golf.

Faith Alliance Music Festival

Guests enjoyed music, food and fun at the first Sing Out Against Poverty, Annual Faith Alliance Music Festival in Union Centre. Five bands performed Christian praise music in an effort to raise awareness for local poverty and funding for Faith Alliance programs, which serve local neighbors in need.

A publication of Time, Inc., Money Magazine selected West Chester from a pool of 823 communities by analyzing 60 key factors, including taxes, education, health care and more. West Chester has made the top 50 five times since 2005, including the four most recent lists–2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. West Chester is the only community in the state of Ohio to make the list this year. What started as a rural farm in Liberty Township has grown into a beautiful ..... Carriage Hill. Town of Princeton, located at the intersection of Princeton Road and SR 747, just south of Carriage Hill. It was a lively business center in the early history of Liberty Township, around 1810. The first brick house was built in 1830 with the brick being burned on-site. The town included over the years a tavern, distillery, blacksmith shop, grocery, physicians, shoemaker, tan yard, and pork packer shipping to Cincinnati.

The year was 1979, Marc and Nancy Terry were planning their engagement and seeking a home of their own. Raised in Liberty Township, Marc had a love for the areas natural beauty and desired to own a farm of his own. That opportunity came to life around 1984 when he and his brother Randy purchased the first 64 acres of what is now known as Carriage Hill.

Over the next 20 years life on the farm changed in many exciting ways. Marc and Nancy built their new home, Randy married Patty and they soon followed across the pond. Todd and Lisa joined by locating their home with access on Princeton Road and Ray and Betty (mom & dad) acquired the original farm house and completed needed renovations. Soon to follow, youngest brother Rusty joined the family with his home located near the silo on SR 747. The Terrys feel blessed. After raising 9 children on the farm, we continue to enjoy our lifestyle every day. Most importantly, each of our children cherish their special memories of the past.

orey Hood loved jumping out of airplanes. After serving five tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan with the 82nd and 101st Airborne, Hood, a Lakota West High School graduate, was selected to join the Golden Knights, the United States Army’s elite demonstration and competition parachute team. “To put it simply, they are the best of the best at jumping out of airplanes and performing for crowds,” says Hood’s childhood friend Nick Enger, whom he met in junior high. “Corey couldn’t have been more excited about joining the Golden Knights. He called it his dream job. The job fit him perfectly.” In August 2015 the Golden Knights were performing at the Chicago Air and Water Show, and Enger remembers Hood was excitedly posting pictures from the plane during the practice run at Soldier Field. On August 15, Hood’s team was performing a joint jump with the Navy’s parachute team, The Leap Frogs. “There was a mid-air collision and his emergency parachute opened but could not maneuver to safety,” Enger remembers. 18

Hood passed away the following day from his injuries. His wife, Lyndsay Hood, was standing on the beach where he was supposed to land. As she reflects back on that day, Lyndsay says, “Corey was the most loyal friend you had ever met. He would bend over backwards for anyone, even if it put him out personally. And he was the most fun-loving, thrill-seeking person I had ever met. He was rough around the edges but had the biggest heart paired with the most infectious smile.” It’s obvious to see the lasting impact Corey made on those around him. A group of Corey’s friends, including Enger, founded the Hoody Memorial Fund with help from the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty in July of 2016. On August 13 the group hosted the Inaugural Hoody Memorial Golf Tournament & Dinner at the Beckett Ridge Golf Club, and blew all of Enger’s expectations out of the water. The target was to raise $7,500, and instead they raised $40,000 and hosted the biggest golf outing Beckett Ridge has seen.

Through the fund, a scholarship will be awarded each year to a Lakota student who possesses the same qualities that Corey exhibited through his life–a strong will, a desire to succeed and “a little bit of grit,” Enger says. “Corey was not a straight-A student,” Enger recalls. “His drive in sports and competition was a perfect match for him to excel through the ranks of the Army.” Corey excelled to Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army Golden Knights and won several awards, including two bronze stars. After enlisting, Corey met Lyndsay while he was stationed at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina, and they eventually married in 2004 on a Hawaiian beach. “I miss him every minute of every day,” Lyndsay says. “He was an amazing individual who sacrificed everything for his county, family and friends. He lived life to the fullest and provided me with 13 years of happiness and exciting moments.” Lyndsay says she’s thankful to Corey’s friends for keeping his memory alive. “I can’t say enough about his friends who started all of this. I’m lucky to have them in my life,” she says. At the August 13 Hoody Memorial, a crew from the Golden Knights came into town and participated in the event, where spectators could watch a color guard and bag pipe performance, topped off with four skydivers. “It is absolutely humbling to see the generosity of our local community,” Enger says. “[Corey] always lived by the saying ‘go big or go home,’ and we channeled some of that mentality when planning this event.” The 2017 Hoody Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017. Though it’s hard to top skydivers and bagpipes, Enger says next year’s event will be even bigger and better than this first year. “Corey was proud to be from West Chester and Lakota,” Enger says. “So it’s only fitting to have the golf tournament and dinner in West Chester and have the fund benefit a Lakota student.” Enger adds, “I think about Corey every day. One thing that always reminds me of him is a quote from a fellow service member about Corey. We liked the quote so much that it’s now in a picture frame at our house. It says, ‘You think your Guardian Angel is cool? Mine is at 13,000 feet ready to jump at a moment’s notice. My Guardian Angel is a US Army Golden Knight.’”

or veterans, coming home after serving in the military or fighting in a war can be daunting. Re-entering civilian life and catching up on life’s missed events is challenging in itself, but adding an injury or financial hardship to the mix can make the adjustment that much more difficult. The Butler County Veterans Service Commission is an agency that provides veterans and their dependents with advocacy and assistance in obtaining veterans benefits, temporary financial assistance and transportation to VA appointments. The Commission is located at 315 High Street in Hamilton and serves approximately 4,880 veterans in Butler County. According to the Commission’s executive director, Caroline Bier, the Commission is defined by three goals: service work, transportation and temporary financial service. Bier retired from the United States Marine Corps in 2013 as Chief Warrant Officer 3, and became executive director of the Commission in 2014.. She says they strive every day to meet the needs of the veteran families residing in Butler County. “The Butler County Veterans Service Commission works closely with our community partners to best meet the needs of the veteran families that we service, thus helping to improve the lives of veterans and their families,” Bier says. One veteran who benefited from these services is Chuck Weber, who served six years as Captain in the Army. including a tour in Vietnam. Weber visited the Commission and was assisted with

filing for benefits associated with veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange during military service. A few years after Weber’s first visit to the Commission, he was nominated for the position of Commissioner at Large and appointed by a sitting judge in Butler County. He currently serves as Commissioner at Large and encourages other veterans in the area to visit the Commission to see what services may benefit them. “Call or stop in to make an appointment with a service officer,” Weber says. “We have five service officers who are highly trained and certified to assist veterans.” Although the Commission serves nearly 5,000 veterans, there are about 26,000 veterans living in Butler County. Both Weber and Bier hope the Commission can help more and more veterans in the future. “We ask all Butler County residents to get the word out about our agency,” Bier says. “We have found that word-of-mouth is a great method to inform veterans about our agency and the services we provide. hen we think of weddings we often limit our thoughts to white gowns, tuxedos, flowers and dancing. Though it is a celebration, a wedding represents something beyond a single event. When the images of cakes and candlelight fade and all of the guests have returned to their homes, the one thing that remains is the unconditional love that exists between the couple. Indeed, “I do” is one of the most impactful phrases a person could ever say. As humans we want to be loved and cared for; we want to feel heard and know that we’ve been understood. For many, marriage is a significant milestone in their lives. It’s the celebration of love that leaves a mark, not just on our calendars, but on our hearts as well. Two West Chester and Liberty Township couples have reached significant milestones in their lifetime journeys of love. Though their walks to the alter happened 50 years apart, their love stories are similar. From newlyweds to golden anniversaries and beyond, there is plenty to celebrate. For Diane and Tom Jackson, it was apparent at their recent 50-year wedding anniversary that they have achieved a life of love and commitment to each other, but their love story began a little differently when the pair first met as children on the school bus. “He used to sit behind me and pull my pigtails and tease me,” Diane laughs. While it wasn’t love at first site on the yellow bus, the couple eventually began dating in high school; Diane was 15 and Tom was 17.

The Jacksons truly have grown up together. “I had just graduated from high school and we went out on a date, and Tom said ‘I want to ask you now, before you go away to college, if you’ll marry me.’ He knew that if I went away to college we wouldn’t get married. That was on my eighteenth birthday,” Diane recalls. It was then that Diane altered her plans to be with the man she loved and began a career in data processing, which is what brought them from Indiana to West Chester. After five and a half years of dating, the Jacksons wed in 1966. “He’s my best friend. We laugh and have fun together,” Diane says. “The thought of not having him, I can’t imagine it. He’s always been so supportive; he’s never put me down.” For their 50th anniversary, the Jacksons were surprised with a party planned by their children and grandchildren. Guests traveled from across the country to honor and celebrate the Jacksons and their love. “People drove in from Florida, Illinois and all over to come. It was one of the best times we’ve ever had,” Diane says. Despite the typical challenges that come with any relationship, Diane and Tom have found their happily ever after, and often share sentiments and advice on marriage with their grandchildren in hopes that they can help them find a similar love. “Marry somebody who is your best friend,” Diane says. “We’ve both learned that it’s getting through the hard times that make you get closer. has been equal. We work together. My granddaughters always say that they want to marry someone like Pappy because they see that we might get upset with one another, but then we’re still hugging on each other. They see that we still have fun.” Nearly 42 years after Diane and Tom married, another young couple’s journey was just starting. For Melanie and Zach Reber, that journey began in the halls of Lakota East High School in 2008; she was 15 and he was 16. They bonded over their shared interest of musical theatre and choir. The couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary this past August 1. “We bought a house right around our first anniversary,” Melanie says, reflecting on why they opted for a low-key anniversary celebration. “We had a quiet night with dinner and a movie.” The transition into married life was easy for the pair, who have been together for eight years. “Not everything is about yourself, so you have to learn to put the other person before yourself and compromise,” Melanie says. “Giving the other person space when they need it,” Zach adds in agreement. As the couple has experienced life together from a young age, it’s their love for one another that makes both of the Rebers excited about the future. Both say that they are looking forward to traveling the world and, one day, becoming parents. For now, they are still enjoying the perks of being newlyweds. “The clean house is good. Laundry is good,” Zach jokes. “It’s just nice to be married to someone who you get along with. Someone who you can really have a good time with.”

“He’s my best friend so it’s awesome to be able to come home and hang out with him every day,” Melanie says. “Plus, he’s a great cook.” Both couples began as friends and demonstrate what it means to find true love. Where one journey begins, another continues, and the couples agree that in good times and in bad, marriage is about growth, support and love. orty years is a milestone, something to celebrate–and that’s exactly what the West Chester • Liberty Chamber Alliance is doing this year. The Chamber Alliance has grown from a small group of 12 businessmen in the mid 1970’s, to the region’s third largest Chamber with about 750 member businesses. Its mission is to help establish West Chester and Liberty Townships as the region’s business epicenter. As more businesses begin to call West Chester and Liberty “home,” The Chamber Alliance has been working diligently with area organizations to grow the region’s commerce, education and infrastructure for the past four decades. “As our region continues to grow, we look forward to growing along with it,” says Pamela Gruber, Marketing, PR and Events Coordinator for the Chamber.

To commemorate its 40th anniversary, the West Chester • Liberty Chamber Alliance hosted a celebration in March. While the anniversary celebration is an annual event, this year’s gathering went to the next level, with a keynote speaker and entertainment that captured memories of the past 40 years. “We continue to honor the history of our Chamber by naming our annual awards after our founding members,” Gruber says. Those awards are bestowed annually upon businesses and individual members who excel in the areas of leadership, community service, beautification and membership. The Chamber has been able to celebrate its 40th anniversary with help from its 2016 sponsors, including the 40th Anniversary Sponsor, UC Health–West Chester Hospital. And the celebrations have continued all year. Joseph Hinson, President and CEO of The Chamber Alliance agrees that there is much to celebrate. Hinson identifies the Union Centre Boulevard Interchange, which was built in 1997, as one of the most significant developments in the past four decades. Other recent advancements include State Route 129, which opened an 11-mile stretch of highway from I-75 to Hamilton, and the 2008 Liberty Way Interchange, which has provided a gateway for businesses like Liberty Center. Hinson sees the Chamber continuing to support the

vision of future growth and development within West Chester and Liberty Townships and the I-75 Growth Corridor. “Using the Chamber’s platform as an influential business leader in our region helps our members with key business connections, strategic positioning for their future growth and enhances their knowledge of our ever-changing landscape,” Hinson adds. One way in which The Chamber Alliance will continue to help members grow their businesses is by partnering with Access Business Development and Finance, which will reside in the Chamber’s corporate office in January 2017. Access supports small to mid-market businesses with financial and technical resources. Along with SCORE, which is a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses accelerate to the next level, Access will help the the Chamber continue to support economic growth in the coming years.

“Access and SCORE will provide the additional resources and expertise to enhance our Chamber’s mission as a hub for business as we continue to connect people and possibilities locally and throughout the region,” Hinson says. The West Chester • Liberty Chamber Alliance has stayed the course over the years as new businesses opened and relocated to the area, and Hinson looks forward to many years to come. “Experiencing our community 24-7 has allowed us the opportunity to have a more thorough understanding of our community, and therefore provide the best possible service to our members and the business community,” Hinson says. While The Chamber Alliance has been celebrating its first four decades this year, it’s always planning for the future business needs of West Chester and Liberty Townships. “There’s still room for growth and development,” Gruber says. “The possibilities are endless.”

PHILANTHROPIC PRIORITIES COMMUNITY FOUNDATION CONDUCTS REGION'S FIRST-EVER NEEDS ASSESSMENT ARTICLE ABBEY MCMAHON

arely is a single organization able to identify and respond to the needs of an entire community; however, that’s exactly what the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty is hoping to achieve next Spring. The Foundation will partner with Ignite Philanthropy Advisors to conduct the first-ever comprehensive community needs assessment for the West Chester and Liberty Township area. The final result will be a Community Needs Assessment Report outlining areas of identified needs in the region where philanthropy can make a meaningful impact. “We’re seeking to gain a deeper understanding of the needs in West Chester and Liberty Townships from people right here in our ehner Park e K t community,” says Erin Clemons, Community a rt nce enjoy a co Residents Foundation president & CEO. “The needs assessment will enable us to identify how to make the greatest impact.” Since becoming President and CEO two years ago, Clemons and her team, along with the Foundation board, have embarked upon an extensive strategic planning process to better define organizational goals and create actionable strategies to achieve those goals. We’re here to take care of all the community’s needs,” Clemons says.

Indeed, the Foundation’s mission is to encourage, support and facilitate philanthropy and improve the quality of life in the West Chester/Liberty area. The Foundation takes care of the long-term needs of the community through community grants, funding non-profits and serving as a philanthropic resource for the region. Clemons describes the Foundation as the savings account for the community. “Our purpose is to be the long-term savings account so that 100 years from now we are still here and still taking care of the community,” Clemons explains. “[Our founder] Patti Alderson did an amazing job getting us to $13M in assets. It was not easy and she’s been a tremendous leader in our community. I hope to grow our assets so we can keep up with the growing pace of our community.” A major way in which the Foundation will keep up with the community’s steady growth is by studying the needs assessment, which will enable the Foundation to focus its efforts on areas of greatest need, while also being able to assist donors in making the biggest impact locally with their charitable dollars. Findings from the needs assessment will be shared with local government, nonprofit agencies, and other local organizations, along with the public, in the hopes of identifying areas of potential collaboration. Numerous organizations in our area, and a few beyond our region, are celebrating milestones this year. Hamilton, Ohio, turned an impressive 225 years old this year and has been celebrating as the city continues to revitalize itself into a vibrant community through the arts. Read more about Hamilton’s “comeback” on page 12. For four generations Natorp’s has been growing plants right here in our own backyard and this year they celebrated 100 years of business. Premier Health Atrium Medical Center, which offers technologically advanced emergency and trauma care, and the National Park Service also observed their centennials this year. Lakota Local School District as we know it today was founded 60 years ago and has grown from a rural to a suburban school district with nearly 16,500 students today, making it the seventh largest district in the state of Ohio. Its students continue to excel in the areas of academics, athletics and the arts. In fact, an impressive 13 Lakota students were recently named National Merit Semifinalists (read more on page 10). Our community is lucky to have not only a great school district, but also

a strong chamber of commerce. The West Chester ▪ Liberty Chamber of Commerce celebrated 40 years this year, as did One Way Farm, a nonprofit children’s home in Fairfield. Although it’s hard to believe there was a time when internet searching didn’t exist, the World Wide Web turned just 25 years old this year. Cornerstone Christian Preschool, located on Princeton-Glendale Road, has served the community with specially trained teachers in early childhood education for 20 years. Voted “Best Sandwich Shop” in 2015, Luigi’s Olde World Market has been satisfying taste buds for a decade. Likewise, the Butler County Visitors Bureau celebrated its tenth year creating exceptional tourism experiences for visitors throughout Butler County. And for half a decade thrill-seekers have enjoyed racing at Full Throttle Indoor Karting. We’re also proud to celebrate alongside several businesses that, like us, are turning one this fall. Village Wines of Glendale, The Diet Center and Liberty Center have achieved their first year of success.
