wo of my favorite indulgences are great food and great wine. I consider myself a "foodie," often seeking out unique new dishes to savor at restaurants or experimenting to create something tasty in my own kitchen. That’s why we’re excited to debut West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle’s first Food & Wine issue. Our Hot Spot feature uncovers a hidden gem in the local food scene, The Coach House in Hamilton. Chef Jared Whalen has worked at some of the finest restaurants in Cincinnati, including The Maisonnette, and now his culinary creations are being served right here in Butler County. I love to cook and often look for new ways to make meal preparation more fun and functional. This month I share my favorite unique kitchen gadgets that have become indispensable in my kitchen. If I’m being completely honest, I don’t know much about wines, but I do know that I enjoy them. Cozy’s champagne cupcakes 6 eggs 2/3 cup butter 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 vanilla bean, split 1 teaspoon salt 1 ½ cups sugar ¾ cup champagne Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Separate four egg yolks and discard. Gradually add egg whites and remaining two eggs to butter/sugar mixture. Scrape vanilla bean and add to butter mixture. Add flour, baking powder, and salt to butter mixture alternating with champagne. Mix until fully combined. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. ICING

very glass of wine tells a story. In each sip is contained a history, a geology, a region. Each bottle tells its own tale. At Village Wines of Glendale, owner and Liberty Township resident Kate Eberlein brings these stories to life. Eberlein’s story of how she came to love wine and own the shop at 23 Village Square—a building that dates back to the 1880s and has plenty of tales of its own—is as rich and flavorful as a glass of cabernet.

Eberlein’s love affair with wine begins at a wedding she attended in the early 1990s. The nuptials took place in scenic Napa Valley. Eberlein and her husband Jeff became enamored of Napa’s fertile rolling hills, the process of winemaking, and the science of flavors. By the time the wedding ended, Eberlein was committed to bringing her new hobby home with her. “We held tastings in our home. They weren’t anything formal, just something fun to do with our friends. Before I knew it, I was learning about wine all the time. I couldn’t get enough of it. We started pairing wines with food and getting into the science of flavors,” Eberlein says. To keep her collection stocked during the early days of her dalliance with wine, Eberlein spent a lot of time at Piazza Discepoli’s Glendale location. She struck up a friendship with store owner Steve Dinnerstein, and one day he asked if she’d like to work there. Eberlein, who was working from home at the time, jumped at the chance to make some extra income. For five years, she talked wine all day, made sure the store’s regulars were taken care of (“If a customer wants Chablis, we’ll have Chablis,” she jokes), and soaked up as much wine knowledge as she could. In 2015, Dinnerstein told her he was looking to work less and he casually asked if she had any interest in buying the store. Recognizing an opportunity to turn a passion to a profession, to transform a love to a life, Eberlein took the plunge into ownership in November of 2015, re-christening the store Village Wines of Glendale. UNCORKING THE POSSIBILITIES

Eberlein wasted no time in putting her fingerprints on Village Wines of Glendale – first, a revamped/reorganized f loorplan, then a professionally hand-painted mural in the store’s bar and entertainment area, the Piccolo Wine Room. Mid2016 brought a new chef, formerly of 20 Brix and Honey in Milford, and working with him and other staff on building a

rotating menu that delivers a complete f lavor experience. In addition to wine restaurant mainstays like a charcuterie board, Village Wines offers exotic, delicious takes on burgers, salads and f latbreads that change each weekend. Eberlein has also experimented with pop-up dinners, serving her guests special dinners that are paired with wines, and has tapped into Greater Cincinnati’s craft brewing culture by offering beer pairings. Taste, however, isn’t the only sense guests will have engaged at Piccolo. There is live acoustic music every Friday evening and every other Saturday. The entertainment adds a layer of richness to an experience that is simultaneously intimate and casual. Yet Village Wines isn’t merely a venue for great food, great drinks and great music; it’s paradise for those who love to learn about wine. Village Wines is host to frequent guest wine makers who lead tastings and educate customers about a region’s wines. They’ll describe the topography of the land and explain where grapes are grown to add context to flavors. This collegial wine experience is Eberlein’s gift to her customers. It’s a gift she gives enthusiastically. “If someone is interested in a particular wine, I will take out a map and show them the village or city that wine comes from. I can explain, for example, that a particular region is known for a certain kind of soil and they have that soil because there was a glacier there thousands of years ago,” Eberlain explains. “I love finding answers to my customers’ questions.” Love is the driving force at Village Wines of Glendale. Eberlein’s passion for where and how wine is made, and her desire to play matchmaker with a bottle and a palate, is what makes visiting the store an experience CONTINUED > worth toasting. This is how every guest is greeted at The Coach House, a hidden secret atop the hills of Hamilton, Ohio, in Butler County. Located within Berkley Square, the destination offers a complete culinary experience where its charming and vintage past is married with fresh modern trends. pink ribbon extends beyond the month of October. Named for the international sign of moral support among breast cancer survivors, local organization Pink Ribbon Girls (PRG) is painting our town pink. PRG offers a network of support and free direct services for women with breast and reproductive cancers. PRG wraps a ribbon of hope around the women of Dayton, Cincinnati, and soon, Columbus. Its motto is “No one travels this road alone.” PRG knows too well the challenges of diagnosis, treatment and recovery. They remind women they are strong and brave and encourage them through a fight for their lives. Liberty Township resident and breast cancer survivor Tami Tenoever was a recipient of Pink Ribbon Girls’ services. “I love that Pink Ribbon Girls are based locally and give back to the community where we are. Most of the women involved in the organization have been touched in some way 28

by cancer. You can see the passion and the love they have for women,” Tenoever explains. “They don’t want anyone to feel isolated as they work through this disease.” Jan Middleton is a breast cancer survivor and Director of Community Partners and Education at PRG. “When you are diagnosed, your entire family is diagnosed,” Middleton says. “We keep the whole family in mind when we plan our services.” There is often little time to process a diagnosis. Heather Boes, Liberty Township survivor, recalls the stress of that time. “It was a whirlwind,” she says. “I found out, then—boom, boom, boom—there was an appointment every day…mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy. Then there’s the call that turns your world upside-down.” Before patients even know what they need, PRG assists so ill women can focus on healing. Meals for the whole family

are delivered to doorsteps. Housekeeping services are scheduled to lighten the load. Transportation is offered to and from treatment and doctor’s appointments. Peer support provides wisdom and a listening ear. Lisa Schneider learned about Pink Ribbon Girls long before her diagnosis. She never dreamed she’d be a recipient of their services. Schneider, a mother and grandmother, is a caregiver for a large family in Liberty Township. “With eleven people to feed, the meals are a God-send,” Schneider explains. “They

make really good meals that taste like homemade! I don’t have to worry about making nutritional meals.” “The cleaning has been unbelievable for me, too, because I’m a neat freak,” she adds. Pink Ribbon Girls’ free services are not income-based, but offered to local women of all ages and at all stages of cancer. When she was originally offered PRG’s services, Schneider balked, thinking she didn’t deserve the kind of free help she could technically afford. “The Pink Ribbon Girls told me, ‘You don’t know what’s coming your way. Let us help you,’” Schneider recalls. “It’s not about what you can afford, it’s about what you can and cannot do.” Pink Ribbon Girls’ services are offered for two months, with the timing chosen by each individual. “Breast cancer does not have only a twomonth treatment period,” Middleton says. “We tell people to take a look at what their treatment plan is, and let us know when it fits in to best help.”

When other support groups stop giving, PRG fills the gap. Middleton says, “When you are first diagnosed, everybody comes around. Then, your hair grows back and unfortunately, people think, ‘Oh! She’s good!’ and they move on. But you are not 100% better, and at 12-months down the road, you may just be going into reconstruction surgery and really need more help.” Schneider shares, “I cannot describe how touching the organization is to people that are truly desperate—not financially desperate or physically desperate—but emotionally dependent to just get through this.” “Pink Ribbon Girls has been through this. They know what to do to assist you and your families through each stage,” Schneider adds. “To be a recipient of their kindness, understanding and support, it’s really priceless,” she says, tears in her eyes. Pink Ribbon Girls is a gift to women and their families in our region—a package of love and hope, tied with a bow of pink.

incinnati has long been a place to call home for my family. Three of our four children were born in Cincinnati hospitals. Our youngest daughter is again a resident and a member of the house band at downtown’s Howl at the Moon piano bar. One of the best parts about living in Cincinnati is what USA Today recently called “one of six small cities with big food scenes.” An issue of West Chester & Liberty Lifestyle dedicated to the area’s food and spirits has opened a treasure chest of memories for me. I trust it has for you as well. From five-star restaurants featuring exquisite culinary delights to a five-barstool greasy spoon serving reasons to buy Alka-Seltzer, pursuing food in Cincinnati is an addiction to flavor. There are some tastes that are just uniquely ours. Long before Oprah discovered its “worth every penny” creaminess, we knew there was no ice cream like Graeter’s. For more than 140 years, the famous French-pot handcrafted process and huge chocolate chips has allowed Graeter’s to set the ice cream standard few others have matched. The gift pack of six flavors we sent a few Christmases ago to our Florida daughter is still her “best present ever.” Speaking of standards, there may be no higher bar set than that by the “Ribs King.” Grown from humble beginnings in a small building in Montgomery to its current four locations, the Montgomery Inn is one of the finest family restaurants in the country. The smooth flavor of the sauce and the fall-off-the-bone tenderness of the meat have made the Inn a favorite for actors, athletes and every U.S. President since Gerald Ford. Browsing the pictures on their walls tells the story of our city, our country and

our family. Birthdays and anniversaries in the May family are celebrated with a taste that lingers longer than the ribs on the plate. But it was in Cincinnati that I learned food is also about fellowship. I came to the Upper Price Hill area as an eighteen-year-old enrolling at Cincinnati Christian University. Miles from home, local restaurants became a place to build lifelong friendships. Left on Glenway took us to a Frisch’s location where sundaes and hot fudge brownies were often the late night treat. Tuesday nights sent us packing to the LaRosa’s on Boudinot. All-you-can-eat spaghetti, salad and bread tempted twenty to thirty of us each week. I am sure the chain lost money the moment our five cars pulled into the parking lot. But there was no place we frequented quite like Skyline Chili. Perched at the intersection of Glenway and Warsaw, Skyline stood as a lighthouse steering us from the ragged rocks of classrooms and libraries. In 1974 for two one dollar bills–tip included–a five-way and a drink could be the prized possession. The Mediterranean spiced meat atop spaghetti and smothered with grated cheese provided the backdrop for conversation, counseling and contemplating the future. The waitresses often knew our order and had it waiting as we walked through the doors. We helped ourselves to the infamous bowls of crackers or refills on the drinks so that no one would have to scurry to serve us. It is impossible for me to walk into a Skyline today without hearing voices and seeing faces from my past. A smile is destined to crease my lips. To this day, I don’t like to eat alone. In Cincinnati, there simply is no reason to. Bon appétit!
