WEST CHESTER ORTHODONTICS' BEAUTIFUL NEW SPACE WILL ADD SPARKLE TO YOUR SMILE! The Team at West Chester Orthodontics
NEW BEGINNINGS 12
M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS
The old saying goes “A smile is contagious - Pass it on!” If that’s the case, West Chester Orthodontics is the epicenter of creating beautiful smiles, both in their work and in how they treat their patients. A trip to the orthodontist can be daunting for many people, but step-
everything on the ground floor, and a lot of natural light. Sitting on a 1.5-acre lot, part of the new location is a preserved wetland, offering stunning views outside the treatment windows. “I love our current design,” said Dr. Ferrell. “The waiting room is more spa-
“OUR PRACTICE IS UNIQUELY ABLE TO SERVE BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN.” ping into West Chester Orthodontics' new location at 501 Hannum Ave. in West Chester is exciting! Their new building exudes happiness! Perhaps it’s the shiny new coats of paint that excite clients of all ages, or perhaps it’s the continued friendly dispositions coming from Dr. Christine Ferrell and her staff. The location might be new, but the service is still the same as it was from day one! West Chester Orthodontics is not new to the area. In fact, they have been in business for over 10 years! Over these years, Dr. Ferrell has watched the business grow and grow until their old location was busting at the seams. She knew it was time to expand and began the search for a prime location. The new building, located on the west side of the West Chester borough, provides ample parking, easy access to the building with
cious, the high ceilings also increase the sense of space. We now have more dental chairs to support our patients.” With a new building comes the ability to upgrade technology and West Chester Orthodontics took full advantage of that opportunity to add the latest advances to the new office. “Our intra-oral scanners allow us to get rid of goopy impressions that can cause gagging. With that technology, we are able to use 3D printers where we print models of teeth and use them to make highly accurate retainers. We also have a very quick X-ray machine reducing our patient's exposure to radiation. We also offer custom 3D printed braces that allow our patients to have braces that fit the unique anatomy of their teeth perfectly as well as allow for shorter treatment times because of their effectiveness.” said Dr. Ferrell.

In addition to the state-of-the-art technology in the new location, West Chester Orthodontics is also using dental monitoring, which is a mouth-scanning box that attaches to your phone. This allows the office to remotely monitor patients and bring them to their appointments at the appropriate time. This reduces the time kids miss school and adults miss work. One of the great things about this patient-centered practice is the age range of their patients. Many think of orthodontics and associate it with children and teenagers, but that’s not always the case. “Our practice is uniquely able to serve both adults and children. It’s convenient for parents to start treatment here with their kids, so they can come to their appointments together. We can help adults improve their teeth alignment so that they can brush better especially if they have gum disease. We can improve their bites so they chew better. We can support new veneers or crowns by lining up their teeth properly and collaborating with their dentist for the new dental work," said Dr. Ferrell. "We currently have a patient in their 80s who experienced dental trauma that displaced his teeth and he wanted them re-aligned. His buddies pooled together some money to help him get the treatment he needed which I thought was so sweet."

LEAD WITH YOUR SMILE! Dr. Ferrell is also a top provider in the area for Invisalign treatment, which is a clear alternative to braces and is popular among adults. She has taken many hours of continuing education to properly fit Invisalign and move the teeth. The partnership between the orthodontist’s knowledge and good patient compliance truly makes the difference when it comes to Invisalign results. “I compare it to a carpenter versus a craftsman, they both can use tools but who do you want to build your house?,” states Dr. Ferrell. Dr. Ferrell truly is a craftsman in the world of orthodontics. Having been inspired at a very young age by her father, Ferrell has become a very distinguished doctor in the field winning numerous academic awards and countless “Top Dentist” choice awards. She is also among the elite few who are board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics. She counts this as one of the greatest accomplishments of her career, as less than 30% of all orthodontists take the optional board exam. CONTINUED >

“...WE CAN BRING BACK THAT CONFIDENCE SO OUR PATIENTS CAN LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST.” “I used to wear a t-shirt as a kid that said ‘I love my dentist, he is my daddy.’ My dad definitely inspired me. I loved how he interacted with his patients and made them feel at ease in a dental office. I spent time working in his office answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, processing X-rays, cleaning dental chairs, and assisting him chairside. I also loved art and science, so dentistry was a perfect fit,” she said. “Lead with your smile,” is the motto adopted by West Chester Orthodontics and they apply it in all areas of their practice. From the first time you walk through the door to the final time you leave after treatment is complete, the staff and Dr. Ferrell ensure that you are indeed leading the world with your smile.

M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS
“There are so many people that don’t smile because they are self-conscious of their teeth which can give off the first impression that they are insecure or not friendly, “ said Dr. Ferrell. “Life doesn’t have to be this way, we can bring back that confidence so our patients can live life to the fullest.” Dr. Ferrell wants prospective patients to know that there are many options when it comes to straightening their teeth. From full treatment plans for deep bites, underbites, overbites, and crowding or spacing, to shorter treatment plans for touch-ups and less complicated cases, they can do it all. They use metal braces, Invisalign, custom clear braces, and more. “The best way to find out what your needs are is to come in for a complimentary exam. I will evaluate your tooth position and give you the length of time in treatment, the treatment modality, and how much it will cost,” she said. “We offer flexibility in your downpayment and multiple payment plans to fit your budget and 0% financing to serve our patients.” As the business expands in size, Dr. Ferrell is excited to announce a new doctor joined their team in December. Now they will be able to offer more accommodations to their patients, especially new patients, which they are always accepting. To schedule an appointment at West Chester Orthodontics, visit wcbraces. com or call them during business hours at 610-918-3200.

PUTTING
YOU FIR ST Practice these eight self-care tips to improve your mental health and quality of life! ARTICLE BY JAMIE AGAMALIAN We all get caught up in the stress of day-to-day life. From taking care of kids to aging parents and everyone in between, it’s too easy to forget about ourselves. Often our mental health is put last before those we love, but not taking care of ourselves can put more stress on every part of our life, including our mental health. So what can we do to help keep ourselves in check? How do we find the balance between the stress of life and practicing good mental health habits?
28
S ELF CA R E | W EL L NES S
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, self-care plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a good balance in our lives, we need to take time to do the things that improve not only our physical health but our mental health as well. This will help us manage stress, lower our risk of illness, and increase our energy. The Institute has put together a list of 8 tips to get started with a good self-care routine.
1 . E X E R C I S E R E G U L A R LY It is amazing what 30 minutes of physical activity can do to elevate your mood while also improving your health. If you can’t fit in 30 minutes a day, even small 5-10 minutes of dedicated activity can make a big difference. It all adds up!
2 . S TAY H Y DR AT E D A N D E AT R EGU L A R M E A L S We all know that a balanced diet of three healthy meals a day plays a big role in our well-being, but hydration is equally as important to improving our energy and focus throughout the day. Limiting caffeine is also a key component of good health. Next time you reach for a coffee or soft drink, try to replace it with a glass of water instead. You will be amazed at how different you feel!
3. PUT SLEEP A S A TOP PR IOR IT Y
4. FIND RELA XING AC T I V I T I E S TO DO
Sleep is essential to good mental health. Practicing good sleep habits can help take you from restless nights to restful sleep. Starting a sleep schedule and sticking to it will help to make sure you’re getting enough sleep each night. Put those phones and tablets away too. The blue light from screens makes it harder to fall asleep. Perhaps you can exchange the electronic device for a book before falling asleep.
While physical exercise is important, non-physical activities are too. Mediation, breathing exercises, journaling, reading, coloring, crocheting, and knitting are all types of non-physical activities that can help relieve stress and let your mind relax. Find time each day to just sit and participate in an activity that is relaxing to you and can help you destress.

7. P R A C T I C E POSITI VE THINKING When we get stressed, negative thoughts easily enter our minds. It’s important to identify these negative thoughts that are often unhelpful and change them into positives. Instead of focusing on what can’t be done, focus on what you can do in a positive way.
5. G OA L A ND PR IOR IT Y SET TING It’s easy to feel like we have too much to do day in and day out. One way to stay on top of all of our tasks is to decide what needs to be done now and what can wait. Being mindful of what we can and cannot accomplish is also equally important. Learning to say “no” to a new task when you feel your plate is already full is okay. At the end of the day try to reflect on all that you have accomplished instead of what you were unable to complete.
6 . PR AC T ICE GR AT I T U DE What are you grateful for each day? Start a nightly gratitude journal before bed. Write down things that you were grateful for that happened during the day and then remember them throughout the next day when you begin to get stressed. We have so much to be grateful for in our lives. Reflecting on that can help boost our mental health.
30
S ELF CA R E | W EL L NES S
8. CONNECT It is important to stay connected with our friends and family. They are the ones who are there to provide emotional support and help when we need it the most. Spend time each day connecting with a friend or family member in some way. Write a note, send a text, or make a call. Connecting with another human is a great way to boost your mental health and practice self-care. It is important to recognize that mental health looks different for each individual. Whether all eight self-care tips work for you or just a few, it is important to put you and your self-care first. When we take care of our own selves, we can better support those who need us day in and day out. If you are someone you know is struggling with mental health or having thoughts of suicide, it is important to reach out for help. Call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org. This service is confidential, free, and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In life-threatening situations, call 911.
