After winter, it's refreshing to seek out new, warmer adventures. In this month's overall theme of 'Explore,' we have a look about how to freshen our homes, strengthen our local education and preserve our unique history. Additionally, there are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it's a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery, or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing respite. We celebrate Earth Day on April 22, too. Today, Earth Day is believed to be the largest secular holiday in the world, with more than 500 million people taking part in 174 countries. Also, remember that at the end of this month, it's time for the 17th Annual West Chester International Short Film Festival. Here's to a happy spring, full of adventure with peace and sunshine.

Army's First Black Helicopter Pilot Honored In West Chester American Helicopter Museum and Education Center representatives recently honored Capt. Joseph Hairston, who's believed to be the U.S. Army’s first Black helicopter pilot, with the unveiling of a new exhibit featuring a biography of his role in rotary wing aviation. He was born in 1922 in Virginia and grew up in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. He joined the Army in 1940 and served as a 92nd Infantry Division officer in the Italian Campaign of World War II.

Digital Access To West Chester History Center's Items To Expand Chester County History Center representatives are launching a Museums for America grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This $101,000 award will be used over 18 months to increase digital access to the local museum's artifacts and historic photographs. Brandywine Hills Point-To-Point Races Set For April 1 This will be the 80th running. The event reflects exciting horse and pony steeplechase races, a parade of foxhounds and children's activities. Gates open at 11 a.m.; the event concludes at 3 p.m. The event will be held at Myrick Conservation Center in West Chester. Admission is by carload, starting at $25. Higher Education Presidents Sign Dual-Admission Agreement Reading Area Community College and West Chester University presidents signed a new, dual-admission degree completion agreement that provides increased access to baccalaureate degree programs for community college students. The agreement provides qualified, RACC-enrolled students to earn an associate degree and then transfer to West Chester University with a renewable scholarship and priority housing. Welcome, Officer Gilbert Officer Douglas Gilbert was sworn in as a West Chester Borough Police Officer during the fall of 2022. He is a 2016 graduate of West Chester University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. After graduating, he attended the Philadelphia Police Academy and graduated in March of 2019. Prior to joining the West Chester Police Department, Officer Gilbert was employed by the City of Philadelphia Police Department.

Chester County Consortium For Mental Health Participants Gather Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) staffers hosted the fourth session of the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) Chester County Consortium for Mental Health and Optimal Development, featuring guest speakers UPenn Professor of Urban Education and Africana Studies Dr. Howard Stevenson and State Rep. Christina Sappey. The consortium is a yearlong effort to implement mental health planning in Chester County school districts. The group has more than 150 monthly participants from Chester County schools.

Providing exceptional lighting services that complement landscaping and hardscaping for local residents and business owners throughout the greater Philadelphia area has been the ongoing mission of a full-service, family-operated company based from Edgmont. "Our goal for Sunset Landscape Illumination is to provide unparalleled, warrantied, LED landscape lighting services to customers, while literally lighting up their lives for the better," says Pierce Shallis, founder/ owner of Illumination's parent company, Pierce L. Shallis Landscaping & Design LLC., established in 2008. Sunset Landscape Illumination became a branded service extension after Pierce saw how crucial outdoor lighting can be, for both aesthetics and safety. "Witnessing this need firsthand through our landscaping projects, I realized this was a service vastly missing from the current outdoor offerings in our area," he explains. "So we focused on the art of nightscape lighting, and thus Sunset Landscape Illumination was born." Industry sources indicate some of the top landscape lighting trends for 2023 include outdoor wall lights,

smart security lighting, creative spotlights, functional pathway lighting, stylish string lights, elegant glass lanterns, ambient downlights, sustainable lighting and subtle landscape lighting. "Most people are aware of what their landscape looks like from sunrise to sundown. However, nightscapes can be equally important and become key elements to enjoying your home even more. We can transform properties and make them really shine well at nighttime," Pierce reminds. He adds, "Applying lighting is also like having a security blanket wrapped around your house or property, and enables your cameras to better show you what's happening." In an overall sense, Pierce says their lighting and other services are meant to define outdoor space and deliver symmetry to homes, gardens and other spaces. started when he was young, helping his MaMa (grandmother) in her gardens. He graduated from Philadelphia University with a bachelor's degree in business and landscape planning. Starting with one truck, a few tools, expansive knowledge and passion for the industry, he knew where he was headed. Thus, his company took root. To that end, this hands-on manager says they provide on-site lighting demonstrations in the form of temporary setups for one or two evenings at customers' homes to ensure they will like the final execution before an installation. Pierce says these demos are exact replicas of each project's customized plan. He adds that they deliberately take this extra step, rather than just providing computer-generated renderings. "We often get inspired by the architecture or other aspects of homes and can make tweaks during the demos. We invest the time, effort, knowledge, techniques and equipment to provide worry-free experiences for our customers," Pierce adds. He says each of the company's dedicated employees has been properly trained to ensure quality work with all projects, whether they are full installations or everyday maintenance. "We value each and every opportunity, and take pride in all our work. Customers are at the heart of everything we do." Pierce says they also can include a maintenance element with lighting packages.

He says he expanded this and other business offerings based on customers’ needs. In 2015, his wife, Heather, joined the company to provide her experience in business growth, product development and marketing experience. While they have grown, Heather says Pierce's relentless determination for superior quality and customer service remain the backbone of their business today. In fact, they've earned a Super Service Award on Angi (formerly Angie's List) for 12 consecutive years. Regarding residential landscaping services, they handle plant design and installation; landscape lighting; sod installation; drainage solutions; garden bed care and mulching; aerating, thatching and overseeding; shrub and ornamental pruning; and leaf and plant removal. They provide the same type of services to commercial properties, such as retail shopping centers and restaurants. Regarding hardscape installations, this team says they use color, texture and dimension to bring a oneof-a-kind elegance to finished projects, such as patios, retaining walls, stonescapes and walkways. "Our staff has years of hands-on experience with top of the line flagstone, pavers and boulders," adds Pierce. Pierce says they provide complimentary consultations, no matter the size of a job. "As a guide, we're there to help throughout the process." Giving back to the community is important to both Heather and Pierce. For example, they often donate 5% of all new projects accepted within certain months to the Chester County SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

West Chester University Awarded $716K To Advance Equity Project ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

A Community Project Funding (CPF) grant totaling $716,000 was received by West Chester University to support a project titled "Moon Shot: I Want to STEM! (sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics). The initiative is linked to WCU’s high-profile Moon Shot for Equity mission, which is dedicated to closing equity gaps in student success by 2030. During spring 2022, a nonpartisan panel of 14 community leaders in Pennsylvania’s Sixth Congressional District reviewed 42 applications and recommended select projects. The Moon Shot project emerged as one of 15 offered to the House Committee on Appropriations for funding consideration; committee members approved all 15 projects, and full funding was secured following a vote in the House. The initiative was designed to be a comprehensive outreach, research and mentorship program that guides students successfully from elementary school to a bachelor’s degree in STEM. It establishes a chain of mentorship between grade 3-12 students,

undergraduates and faculty/industry partners. The project was intentionally designed to expand K-12 STEM engagement for students in grades 3-12 who are of color and low income, as well as to improve college STEM retention by increasing financial assistance and building a sense of community for college students at WCU who are of color and low income. “Not only does this project have the potential to serve as a national example for closing achievement gaps, it also holds promise to help meet STEM employment needs by providing students with hands-on experiences in real-world, industry-aligned activities and research projects,” says associate professor Brandon Mitchell. “STEM careers are for everyone, and more seats are needed at a much longer table,” says WCU Senior Vice President and Interim Provost Jeffery Osgood. Dean of the College of the Sciences and Mathematics Radha Pyati says, “We need to be equally committed to cultivating and nurturing the next generation of STEM professionals in a way that includes women, people of color and other underrepresented groups. This grant demonstrates we're here to do whatever we can to increase STEM-focused opportunities and support all students.”

History Center Receives Grant FINANCIAL SUPPORT AWARDED TO SOCIETY FOUNDED BY LOCAL CITIZENS IN 1893 ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHESTER COUNTY HISTORY CENTER

Thanks to the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission members, the Chester County Historical Society in West Chester received a $16,956 grant. The community museum was one of five total recipients. Located at 225 N. High St., the nonprofit center features exhibits telling the history of Chester County. Private tours and lectures are available. The museum has documents, letters, diaries, toys, tools, manuscripts, photographs, furniture and other furnishings. Museum representatives also deliver school and youth educational programs, and a National History Day year-round academic program. The Chester County History Center is the official coordinator for National History Day in Chester and Delaware Counties. Each year, 2,000-plus local students participate in their schools, 300 advance to compete at the regional level (the center's contest), and many continue on to the state and national competition. This grant initiative funds projects designed to improve the preservation and accessibility of historically significant records maintained by local governments, historical societies and academic institutions. “Tourism created by these historic sites is a lifeblood for our communities and significant for all of Pennsylvania,” says Pennsylvania State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, who made the grants' announcement. A total of $44,000 in state grants was awarded to historical societies and museums across the county. Other recipient entities were [$10,454] Historic Yellow Springs in Chester Springs; [$7,789] Wharton Esherick Museum in Malvern; [$6,231] Graystone Society Inc., in Coatesville; and [$4,000] Historic Sugartown, Inc., in Malvern. “Not only do the awards reflect highly on the organizations themselves, but the investment also greatly benefits residents all across the county, because our shared cultural heritage is something we all know is precious," adds the state representative.
