Borough Employees Donate To West Chester Food Cupboard

Chester County Chamber Of Business/Industry To Host Local Civics Bee

Employees of West Chester Borough collected donations for the West Chester Food Cupboard, a group that's staffed entirely by volunteers. The cupboard supports more than 1,000 families annually with access to essential food and personal items. Organizers indicate about half of all the food they distribute is donated and the other half is funded by cash donations. Their 5,300-square-foot facility is located at 431 South Bolmar St.

Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry representatives are partnering with Pennsylvania Chamber members to host a regional Civics Bee on April 15, as part of the annual U.S. Chamber Foundation’s National Civics Bee. After the regional Civics Bee at CCIU, the top three students from each local competition will then advance to the state competition on June 5, 2023. First place winner will receive $1,000 cash prize in both the local and state competitions.

The Creamery Opens New, Outdoor 'Glice' Rink The Creamery of Kennett Square’s new outdoor skating rink can accommodate 50 skaters at once, says Michael DePaolo, general manager. The rink is eco-friendly and composed of synthetic ice material called Glice. It's open to the public Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through April 2. Prior registration is required, and can be completed online by purchasing tickets in advance at KennettCreamery.com/ Ice-Rink-2023. Cost is $10 per hour per person; an additional cost of $4 to rent skates.

Decor Spring Fling HERITAGE DESIGN INTERIORS TO HOST OPEN HOUSE MARCH 9-18

Heritage Design Interiors' store designers are set to host a Spring Fling open house during March 9-18, complete with fresh home décor, lamps, floral designs, vases, wreaths, pottery, artwork, mirrors, candles, decorative plates and accessories. Located in New Holland at 1064 E. Main St., this event will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the two Saturdays during these designated dates. Door prizes and special prices will be offered. "We help customers live well styled," shares Heritage Design owner Anita Yoder. "We customize our design and decorating services to our clients' needs and wants. From blueprints to window treatments, we help our clients make their houses into pleasing homes."

She says they also assist with ancillary projects, such as paint color selections and furniture layout, along with tips for design enhancements. While new "colors of the year" may be trending, such as Pantone's eye-catching 'Viva Magenta,' Anita encourages everyone to first consider personal preferences. "Your own tastes and individual lifestyle is the current trend to truly follow." Regarding overall 2023 color and design trends, Anita says people's preferences are: cool grays are warming up

to taupes; greens are less sage or olive and more emerald or hunter green; pinks are more dusty rose or earthy pinks; whites are less bright and more oyster white; reds and oranges also are more earthy hues; and navy blue is still popular. "I love to see navy blue paired with yellows or lime green, especially during spring and summer seasons," she adds. Anita says brass touches are stronger than ever, especially the brushed finish, however, polished brass is becoming enjoyed, too.

"Wallpaper is very popular again, as a great way to add pattern and color to your space," says Anita, indicating fabrics with textures and patterns also are sought-after. One must-have look includes luxury vinyl planks and tiles. "We're seeing beautiful faux hardwood or stone patterns, and these are excellent for low-maintenance flooring," Anita explains. He says the 19-year-old version of himself had a bit of an epiphany: "In a reflective moment, I realized we weren’t just building a house, we were building someone’s home. A home where they would experience all of life’s most important moments, where they would come together to celebrate and where they would heal. Help Households In Need Start healthy, stay healthy, and succeed in school -- it's a noble wish for every infant, right? Although Chester County ranks as the wealthiest county in Pennsylvania, Milena Oberti Lanz, executive director for West Chester-based Maternal and Child Health Consortium, says one in four county residents are struggling to make financial ends meet and to access resources they need to stay healthy. "The hardest hit are families with children," she adds. MCHC’s mission is to advocate for and empower prenatal and parenting families to achieve healthy beginnings and inspired, bright futures through a caring culture of service. The vision of this registered 501(c) (3) nonprofit's supporters is to create a network through which every family has access to health care, education and opportunity for success.

MCHC was created in 1991 by representatives from the Chester County Health Department, March of Dimes of Southeastern PA, and Planned Parenthood of Chester County on the belief that everyone should have access to high-quality health care regardless of race, ethnicity, language or insurance status. In 1995, the consortium started providing prenatal case management for low-income pregnant and parenting people and their children who seek support. In 1997, with funding from the federal Healthy Start program, MCHC became one of 100 Healthy Start programs in the country and they expanded to reach more at-risk individuals. MCHC’s Family Benefits Program soon was introduced to provide uninsured/under-insured families with bilingual, bicultural assistance with accessing state subsidized health insurance programs, and then in 2010 expanded to

include enrollment in food benefits. In 2006, MCHC launched the Family Center Program to address a gap in school readiness among low-income families with children in southern Chester County. Now, Natalie Coughlin, MCHC director of development and communications, says the nonprofit serves nearly 5,000 individuals every year, and has become a leading service provider in the Chester County social safety net, with their work cited in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Today, she adds that MCHC has an operating budget of more than $1.8 million through public and private partnerships and strong community support. One of the nonprofit's outreach programs stems from MCHC community health workers visiting participants to practice problem-solving and fine motor skills with their children. Natalie confirms that a main focus of the Healthy Start program is to provide activities that families can do with items already found in their homes, without needing to purchase anything extra. Healthy Start families receive socio-emotional, educational perinatal support and educational enrichment ideas with the Pennsylvania Parents as Teachers evidence-based curriculum.

Kulu Mele African Dance And Drum Ensemble

UPTOWN KNAUER PERFORMING ARTS CENTER | 2:00 PM For 50-plus years, Kulu Mele has preserved and perpetuated cultural traditions of West Africa and the African Diaspora, including Afro-Cuban arts and contemporary hip-hop. This performance will include both traditional and hip-hop works. Audience members will be invited to dance at their seats and will learn about the geographical/cultural origins of works performed, as well as insights into African drums/costumes.
