Season of "Thanks" - Giving Back Happy Thanksgiving! As this holiday season approaches, it’s natural for us to reflect on what we are thankful for in our lives. In addition to being extremely grateful for our wonderful family and friends, at West Chester Lifestyle Magazine, we are thankful for our amazing community. We live in a vibrant and collaborative community in West Chester and it’s truly a gem among many communities across the country. Part of what makes West Chester so great is our giving spirit of service to others. By giving back, we truly find ways to connect across many different avenues. From helping collect food and personal care items for the West Chester Food Cupboard or the West Chester University Resource Pantry, to preparing and serving meals at Safe Harbor or the Salvation Army, donating clothing and household goods to various organizations in need such as the St. Agnes Day Room and Kindred House at Gaudenzia, teaching English through the Volunteer English Program, volunteering your time to help the animals at the Brandywine SPCA, or even lending a hand in your child’s school programs - the opportunity to serve others is alive and well in West Chester and we are so proud to be part of this community. Each month, we like to showcase a non-profit in our community to bring awareness to the amazing work they are doing. This month we are featuring Gateway HorseWorks in Malvern, which specializes in incorporating horses into mental health treatment plans. Tucked away on a quiet farm in the Malvern, horses are helping individuals heal. Gateway HorseWorks gives an alternative pathway to talk therapy for individuals facing trauma, anxiety, grief, addiction, and reincorporation into society. Recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health, Gateway HorseWorks founder Kristen de Marco opted to find an alternative pathway to healing through equine therapy. According to de Marco, horses aid the healing process in their nonjudgemental feedback which provides the opportunity for people to reflect on their own life and actions in a different perspective.

“When I started doing this work, so many of the people who were finding their way to me for innovative mental health services, couldn't afford access to them,” said de Marco. “I never turned anyone away. One day, I received a call from a Probation Officer from Chester County. He was looking to start a trauma-informed program for the women he was working with in reentry. Unfortunately, he didn't have access to any funding or support. That call felt like my call to action, so myself along with a Board of Directors, founded Gateway HorseWorks in 2015 with an impetus to make the incorporation of horses for the mental health treatment of people accessible to everyone in our community rather than an elite experience.” Clients facing mental health struggles with anxiety, depression, grief and bereavement, eating disorders, addiction, PTSD, and trauma find that the horses become a metaphor for their own struggles. While talk therapy can help in many instances, horses open up individuals to new experiences and new ways to heal. “It is amazing to watch people discover new insights, awareness, and perspectives here at the farm. People have the capacity to heal from unimaginable circumstances if given the space to do so,” explains de Marco. “I feel honored to witness these moments and work alongside an incredible team of people and horses every day in service of our community.” CONTINUED >

There are many great ways for the community to get involved with the mission of Gateway HorseWorks. Weekly community volunteers are needed to help clean the barns while corporate volunteers come to the farm to work together in team-building activities. The community can come out on November 26th for the fall volunteer day to help beautify the farm and lend a hand where needed. To sign up to volunteer, contact Jordyn at volunteer@gatewayhorseworks.org. The community is also encouraged to come attend the 2nd annual Winter Wonder-Farm Day on Sunday, December 3rd. Local craft vendors, holiday music, pictures with ponies, and many other fun activities will usher in the holiday spirit while helping further the mission of Gateway HorseWorks! It’s a great way to see the farm too!

What started out as a birthday gift turned into the backyard of their dreams! Bruce and Nancy Winn contacted Borsello Landscaping a little over a year ago to help them transition Nancy’s new endless pool between their walkout basement and their backyard. Bruce wanted to create an inviting exercise area for their new addition. As soon as they contacted Borsello, the ideas started to flow and soon they were building a

new deck, redoing the pool deck, adding an outdoor kitchen and even putting in an experiential garden. The Winns like to host gatherings. With 7 kids and 29 grandchildren, there is always someone over visiting. Creating a backyard that could have everyone gathered in one place was important to them. They had the space available, so they wanted to do it right. This is where Barsello's head landscaper Dean Stafford stepped in. CONTINUED >

“This is the project of a lifetime,” Dean stated. ”We have transformed their entire site in many ways. We have renovated all their landscaping, added a paver driveway, installed an outdoor kitchen, hardscaped the area around the pool, and so much more.” Summers by the pool have a resort-like feel now for the Winns. Lounge chairs adorn their beautifully landscaped pool area and not far away is an outdoor kitchen and combination fire/water feature that provides the opportunity to maximize the time spent together outside of the house. Who needs a vacation when your backyard is already the resort? In addition to their new pool area and deck, the Winns are currently putting in an experiential garden. On a 1/2 acre of land located beyond their backyard, the garden will be a place to “pause and stop to embrace the surroundings,” states Dean. The garden will have four very intentional vista points complete with whimsical plantings and stone walls. There will be

a stabilized aggregate garden path lined with cobblestones, along with stone and cedar bridges. The garden will even include a swing as well as a zipline over the entire garden. “Kids of all ages can sit and stay a while,” said Dean. “The garden will be a place full of whimsy, like their very own personal Winterthur.” Borsello Landscaping is so proud of the work their team has completed thus far in this project. It has been all hands on deck, but they all agree that it has been fun along the way as well. The creative juices have definitely been flowing with this particular project. The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer.
