West Chester Juneteenth Festival At Melton Center The Second Annual West Chester Juneteenth Festival was held June 18 at the Charles A. Melton Arts and Education Center. The event was a celebration of culture and community. Local Black small business owners offered food, handmade artisan goods and other products. Speakers and performers included music by DK Papo. House of Hope Concert Raises Funds For Home of Sparrow West Chester Area School District's East High School students combined performing, event planning, marketing and networking skills to raise $7,000-plus at the 12th Annual House of Hope Concert for the Home of the Sparrow, an organization that partners with local women and children facing homelessness. The student-led planning committee met weekly to design posters, advertise to the public, host auditions and prepare the venue. The concert contained solos, band acts and dancing.

255 JUVENILES FULFILL COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS VOLUNTEERING AT SPCA ANIMAL SHELTER

National Association of Counties' representatives granted the 2022 Achievement Award to a Chester County program in which juvenile offenders serve their community service working with animals from the Brandywine Valley SPCA to provide socialization of shelter dogs and cats before they're offered for adoption. In less than a year, 255 juvenile offenders fulfilled community service requirements at the SPCA's Shelter Animals For Enrichment (SAFE) program. The award honors innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents, and are given in 18 categories, including children/youth, criminal justice and public safety, county administration, information technology, health and civic engagement. Chester County Youth Center caseworker Kristi Washington submitted the idea for juvenile offenders to fulfill community service hours while also providing a positive enrichment experience for them. "While the success of our SAFE program can be measured in ‘community hours served,' its value is really found in the effect it has on those in the Youth Center and the County staff who're working with them. The program fosters an environment of judgment-free love and really builds beneficial relationships with everyone involved," says Hailey Marcus, Brandywine Valley SPCA

director of community engagement. "And, at the end of the week, each animal is eligible for, and is typically successful in, being adopted to a permanent home. Many animals have found their second chance with help from the SAFE program.” Linda Torelli, Brandywine Valley SPCA chief marketing officer, says this partnership and the SAFE program reflect the overall priority placed on people and pets, not just the animals. "SAFE is one of many programs that honor and support the invaluable impact pets and people have on each other. Other examples include our Paws for Change pet therapy program for regular visits to places like prisons and classrooms for special needs students, our pet food pantry for families needing a bridge to care for their pets, and assistance for pets of domestic violence survivors.” This community service was especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic when other neighborhood service opportunities were restricted. NATION’S 'PREMIER AVIATION MUSEUM DEDICATED TO ROTARY FLIGHT HISTORY' IS IN WEST CHESTER

However, guests may turn every museum day into special Helicopter Day visits, if desired. Located across the runway from Brandywine Regional Airport, the museum’s displays include helicopters, models and archival materials. The aircraft, exhibits and video presentations depict the development and evolution of rotary wing flight in the Philadelphia region, the country, and around the world. Aviation History Magazine staffers called this museum the “best scientific outing for kids." Paul Taylor, educational programs manager, says the museum provides educational programs that teach and inspire visitors of all ages about the basic principles and wonders of vertical flight. "We also use rotary-wing aviation as a gateway to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Programs like Girls in Science and Technology (GIST), Science Saturdays, and STEAM Storytime provide fun, hands-on experiences that teach and inspire," he adds. Additionally, the museum can be rented for birthday parties and other special occasions. Another museum offering is Adopt-a-Copter through which recipients get a certificate of adoption; a glossy photo with details about the adopted helicopter; interesting facts about helicopters; paper helicopter cut-outs; two complimentary passes to the museum and a coloring page. Age-appropriate programs at the museum aim to provide visitors with a hands-on experience of rotary wing aviation: 1. Helicopter Hunt for preschoolers and first graders. 2. Amazing Air! Workshop for children in first through third grade.

World Helicopter Day is Aug. 14, so in observance, the West Chester-based American Helicopter Museum and Education Center team will be giving helicopter rides from 12:30-3:30 p.m. that day on a first-come, first-served basis. Jan Feighner, museum public relations and membership coordinator, says this will be the group's fifth such observation, which enables them to join other similar events across the globe. World Helicopter Day was founded in 2015 by Australian Mick Cullen. "In past, local Heli Days, the Medevac teams and community dog groups, such as Chester County Seeing Eye Puppy Club, have been very popular," she recalls. There are an estimated 56,200 helicopters worldwide and the industry employs more than 500,000 people. Jan says World Helicopter Day celebrates the life-saving missions and capabilities of helicopters while raising awareness of the contributions that helicopters make to society. The day also honors the diverse range of people that design, fly and support helicopters.

What a Drag: The Forces of Flight Experiments developed for children in grade 4, 5 and 6. 5. Helicopter Ground School adapted for middle and high schoolers. 6. FUN TIDBITS ABOUT CHOPPERS 1. Around 1480, Leonardo da Vinci designed a machine resembling a helicopter, which can be described as an ‘aerial screw.' 2. The first working helicopter is believed to have been the Focke-Wulf Fw 61, first flown in 1936. 3. Some people believe helicopters are the most versatile of all the flying machines that man invented. 4. The first person to be rescued at sea by a helicopter was in 1944. It's estimated that the use of helicopters has saved more than 3 million lives in war and peace times around the world since then. 5. As well as search and rescue, helicopters are useful for tourism, medical transport, fighting fires, aerial photography and military activity. 6. Hovering can be the most difficult skill when flying a helicopter. 7. French fighter pilot and helicopter test pilot Didier Delsalle became the first person in history to land on the summit of Mount Everest at 29,035 feet in 2005. 8. The word ‘helicopter’ was coined by French inventor Gustave de Ponton d’Amécourt, who used it to name his small, steam-powered rotorcraft. The word helicopter roughly translates to ‘Spiral Copter’ in English.

Ayana Williams-Smith, a student at Immaculata University, received the Alice Lawson Scholarship for 2022 awarded by the West Chester-Chester County branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). This award is given annually to a 'non-traditional' woman whose education has been interrupted due to family, work or other issues. Ayana, 47, mother of a 19-year-old son, earned a Surgical Technician Diploma from Harrison Career Institute in 2002, the Holmium Laser Certificate in 2010, and completed an associate's degree in psychology from Delaware Community College in 2019. Now, with just six credits to go, she is enrolled in Immaculata University’s College of Adult Professional Studies with the goal of earning a bachelor's degree in healthcare management. Attaining Dean’s List status during 2020 and 2021, she was inducted into Alpha Sigma Lambda, the National Society for Non-traditional Students. Ayana acknowledges that going back to school as an adult has been challenging, but well worth the effort. “It’s been a long journey,” she admits, adding that she plans to enroll in the master's degree program at Immaculata with the goal of working in healthcare administration. “I want to bridge the gap between administration and hospital workers, change the narrative, and bring back the thought that everyone is important, and we are a team,” she proclaims. In addition to her schooling, Ayana works full time as a surgical tech at Lankenau Hospital. At Main Line Health, she's a member of the DREI (Diversity, Respect, Engagement and Inclusion) Committee. "Ayana is an exceptional student who has balanced the challenge of working in a Level One trauma center during the pandemic, while excelling in her classes," says her academic advisor at Immaculata, Kate Kearney.

1. PLAY THE ODDS: Set dogs up for success by not asking too quickly for behaviors that aren't likely to happen. // 2. DON’T REPEAT YOURSELF: Repeating the same cue over and over in rapid succession can be counterproductive when training dogs. Change order of commands to ensure dogs are truly understanding them, not just an expected routine. // 3. BE GENEROUS WITH REWARDS: The more difficult the request, the higher the 'paycheck.' Remember dogs decide what true rewards should be, whether that's food, praise, free run time, head pats, special toy or snuggles. // 4. PUP YUP Our pets, especially dogs, provide so many benefits to us, why not treat them to wholesome, tasty homemade treats? This recipe is fast, easy and can be made in whatever sizes and shapes desired.

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups flour (can be wheat, brown rice, coconut, oat, buckwheat) • 1/2 cup creamy or crunchy peanut butter • 2 eggs • 1/4 cup water

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 F.

2. Mix together flour, peanut butter and eggs in large bowl until slightly combined.

3. Add one tablespoon of water at a time until the mixture becomes wet enough to roll out as dough. If chunky peanut butter is used, more water may be needed to ensure the dough is more workable. 4. Roll out dough and using cookie cutters or drinking glass, cut dough into favorite shapes. 5. Place treats onto baking sheet (using parchment paper on the sheet makes clean up a breeze) and cook for about 15 minutes. 6. Depending on dog’s age and teeth health, decide what level of crunchiness is desired.

This installation features quilts donated in the past seven years. Cotton and silk predominate this array of traditional examples from the 1800s and creative group projects in the later 1900s.
