An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they're a coach, a father, an uncle or an employer, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make our lives. To all of the men who are making positive differences in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

11-Year-Old West Chester Girl Hosts Drive For Ukrainian Children As 11-year-old Olivia Ward watched displaced children with backpacks fleeing Ukraine on television, she says she wanted to send them Girl Scout cookies, which she was selling at the time. Yet, the Stetson Middle School sixth-grader realized the children needed much more than cookies. So, she instead conducted a drive to collect toiletries, stuffed animals, diapers and self-care products. Olivia and her mother connected with another donor group, and the items were flown to Poland.

Chester County Organizations Awarded $235,000 State Funding For Security Upgrades Kesher Israel Congregation in West Chester was among five Chester County groups who received state funding for safety upgrades. Kesher Israel was awarded $40,000 for security improvements. The funds came from the Pennsylvania Nonprofit Security Grant Fund Program, which was established in 2019 to provide grants to nonprofit organizations that principally serve individuals, groups, or institutions that often face bias and hate crimes. Eligible grant projects include equipment/technology upgrades, threat awareness plans and response training. “As faith communities across Chester County, Pennsylvania, the nation, and the world, celebrate major religious holidays, it’s vital that we continue to value, safeguard and uphold our rights to worship peacefully, safely and without fear,” says state Sen. Carolyn Comitta. “Chester County is home to a strong interfaith community. We value each other and support each other in standing against hate. These funds will help enhance the safety of our friends and neighbors who may be targeted by threats, bigotry, intimidation or violence.” The Pennsylvania Nonprofit Security Grant Fund Program, now in its third year, was established by the legislature in Act 83 in response to the 2018 attack on the Jewish community at the Tree of Life, New Light and Dor Hadash congregations in Pittsburgh. According to the Anti-Defamation League, it is believed to be the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the United States.

New Living History Center Opens In Chester County The Jones Log Barn Living History Center opened at 279 Adams Drive, Tredyffrin Township, Chester County. The barn was relocated next to the Duportail House, which was built in 1740 and is used as a wedding venue. Preservationists indicate the circa 1730 Jones Barn shares a peek into early Welsh American architecture in Pennsylvania, reminiscent of the English Lake District architecture. The center is open every Sunday from April through October between 1-3 p.m.; 610.644.6759. This restoration initiative was underway for two decades. Admission to the museum is free.

Pinemar Homes DEDICATED TO FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP, BEAUTIFUL HOMES, ELEVATED COMMUNITIES

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON One regional home builder company strives to be a source of positivity and progress for all involved throughout the entire process. Award-winning, residential construction firm Pinemar, Inc., has been spearheaded by Kyle Lissack since 2008. As president of this luxury building company, Kyle says they work with discerning clients who value fine craftsmanship and exceptionally well-run projects. "The company was founded on the goal of working with great people, building beautiful homes, delivering the best experience to homeowners we can, and being the best partners we can be," reveals Kyle. "We really try every day to improve the lives of the people for whom we build." Specializing in new homes, remodeling and renovations, he assures that his team approaches each project with a combination of enthusiasm, dedication and precision.

"We believe solid collaboration with our clients and their design teams is the foundation of every successful project. With a thorough understanding of your needs — and a commitment to put your best interest ahead of all others — we have the experience and expertise to bring innovative and beautiful solutions to solve your toughest challenges," says Kyle. Kyle says his love of construction began when he, as a young boy, walked job sites in the often dilapidated 18th and 19th century homes of Society Hill and Rittenhouse square with his step-father and grandfather. Many years later, while working for Pinemar during breaks from school, he says he began to understand how significant the role of a builder is in constructing homes for families, and how each house could add overall benefits to its immediate community.

He says the 19-year-old version of himself had a bit of an epiphany: "In a reflective moment, I realized we weren’t just building a house, we were building someone’s home. A home where they would experience all of life’s most important moments, where they would come together to celebrate and where they would heal. And when you think about it from that perspective, it’s easy to understand why we think our clients deserve our very best effort." Don't houses deserve the very best effort possible, posed Kyle, in that moment. So, he says he went about trying to determine how to combine delivering the highest level of craftsmanship and project management with the level of joy and fun for families that building a home warranted. "Once you evaluate the project through your clients' eyes, and set the bar for success as being

as much enjoyment as we can create in the process, it informs different decisions," Kyle adds. Driven by a passion for building beautiful homes and working with clients, Kyle says he stays involved in each of Pinemar’s projects. He shares that he wants new homeowners to enjoy as much natural light and efficient, cohesive home flow as they possibly can create. "We live for people passing by the homes that we touch and saying it's one of their favorite houses, or that they like to look at them when they drive by to capture a happy second," says Kyle. He says he also focuses on paving ways for trade contractors to do their best work, and that he wants visits to the homes they're working on to be bright points in the days of eveyone, including municipal inspectors. A native Philadelphian, Kyle is a graduate of The Haverford School and Colby College. Kyle has served on the board of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, Philadelphia Chapter, since 2017, and is a trustee of the Shipley School. The Pinemar team is collectively associated with the following professional organizations: American Institute of Architects, Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, National Association of Home Builders, National Association of the Remodeling Industry and Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia. They also are open to partnering with other home-related service businesses, and typically are collaborating with up to 14 leading architectural firms, a dozen design partners, and a handful of landscape architects and designers. 610.649.5075 Pinemar.net

Located at 1799 Pocopson Road in West Chester is Pennsylvania's oldest, working thoroughbred farm. It's also home to Thoroughbred Retirement, Rehabilitation and Careers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit thoroughbred aftercare program dedicated to the safety and well-being of thoroughbred horses retired from racing. Family owned and directed by husband and wife duo Charles "Charlie" and Nina Lyman, TRRAC is an accredited program operated at Maui Meadow Farm, which was established in 1946 by Charles' grandfather, Gen. Charles B. Lyman. The farm now specializes in the dignified retirement of thoroughbreds, either bred or trained for racing. Charlie's 81-year-old mother, Erika, still rises each morning at 5:30 a.m. to feed the horses.

Charlie Lyman at the 2021 Thoroughbred Makeover in Lexington Kentucky with his horse "Be In Charge."

"All horses who come through our program are fully evaluated and are up-to-date on their vaccinations, shoeing, dental floats and nutrition plans. We restart our horses with professional trainers, with many achieving careers in upper level showing," says Charlie. "All our horses are offered permanent sanctuary at Maui Meadow Farm at any time they need to return." Nina says they place retired thoroughbreds in new, approved homes while offering proper downtime, retirement, retraining and if need be, rehabilitation. "TRRAC horses are evaluated for soundness, mentality and suitability in new careers while being trained, as well as shown, in events, such as paper chasing, fox hunting, hunters, dressage, eventing, jumpers and pleasure riding," she adds. At presstime, the sanctuary reflected 10 to 12 residential horses, including three retired stallions and at least seven other horses between the ages of 6 to 20 years. Nina says their matriarch, who comes from their legacy of personal generational horsemen, is a "still going strong" mare who will turn 31 years old this year. TRRAC currently offers training solutions for owners, as well as volunteer, showing and riding opportunities. "We have a horse for everyone. They're all available to meet and ride by appointment," says Nina, who adds that they typically assist 80 horses each year.

Additionally, for those who would relish 'borrowing' one of the permanent residential horses for scheduled bits of beloved doting time, TRRAC offers a sponsorship program for $50 per month. Sponsors are allowed a monthly visit and receive a welcome kit that typically includes a win photo of the horse they're sponsoring. With the guidance of handlers, sponsors can brush their special horse and feed treats. Anyone wishing to financially donate tax-deductible amounts to TRRAC is helping for emergency care of the horses, plus ongoing veterinary and feeding costs. They also offer an online wish list for physical items needed for everyday care of the horses. "The horse world is beyond a close-knit community, and that's a wonderful thing," notes Nina. 267.665.4179 OTTBS.org

Highest STEM Award AREA TEACHER BECOMES ONE OF ONLY 117 INDIVIDUALS ACROSS AMERICA PRESENTED WITH TOP U.S. AWARD FOR SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS TEACHERS/MENTORS Jessica Lauer Tilli, an area mathematics leader and Arcadia University alumna, was recognized by U.S. President Joe Biden with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). She's one of two teachers from Pennsylvania, and one of 117 from the U.S. and its territories, to receive the recognition.

28

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | EDUCATI ON

“The Presidential Award honors not only my contribution to mathematics, but that of my incredible colleagues who work tirelessly to ensure equitable experiences for students in our public school system,” Jessica says. “It represents the recognition of the work we do as educators to create access and joy for our students. I'm deeply honored to be part of a group of distinguished teachers who care and uplift our students by recognizing their brilliance and empowering them through rich educational opportunities.” Jessica works as a math curriculum specialist for the Philadelphia School District, where she writes curriculum, provides professional learning for teachers and leaders, and leads the push to prioritize early mathematics. She worked previously at William M. Meredith Elementary School, where she taught middle school mathematics and science for seven years and served as the school-based teacher leader for five years, where she focused on improving mathematics instruction for kindergarten through eighth grade. She has volunteered for the past 13 years as a Students Run Philly Style mentor, training alongside students for races including the Philadelphia Marathon. She serves on the boards of Students Run Philly Style and the Urban Affairs Coalition. In addition to earning a master’s degree in education at Arcadia, Jessica earned a bacheolor's degree in psychology from Goucher College, and was a STEM fellow with the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently a doctoral student studying educational leadership at Temple University.

She's a certified elementary school teacher, and is certified in middle years science, social studies and mathematics. “STEM teachers and mentors serve as powerful catalysts for developing the vast potential of our nation’s learners. PAEMST honors STEM teachers for the commitment they bring to classrooms,” the White House statement proclaimed. Established in 1983, PAEMST is the highest award kindergarten through 12th grade mathematics and science (including computer science) teachers can receive from the U.S. government. Each year, the award alternates between kindergarten through sixth grade and seventh through 12th grade teachers. This year, the award went to kindergarten through sixth grade teachers. “I am deeply appreciative of the inspiration that America’s teachers and mentors provide every day to support the next generation of STEM professionals,” President Joe Biden stated. “The dedication these individuals and organizations have demonstrated to prepare students for careers in STEM fields, during what has been a difficult time for teachers, students and families, plays a huge role in American innovation and competitiveness. The work that teachers and mentors do ensures that our nation’s children are able to unlock -- for themselves and all of us -- a world of possibilities.” The other STEM recipient from Pennsylvania was science teacher Kristin Joivell, with the Juniata Valley Elementary School in Alexandria. At presstime, Jessica learned she also had received Arcadia University's 2022 Alumni Association Outstanding Achievement Award for exemplifying the values of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in her commitment to educational access. Chef-driven menu. Made from scratch dishes. Quality ingredients. Those three phrases are the essence of inspirational culinary creations at Verbena BYOB in Kennett Square. Like a winning race car driver spends ample time finetuning an engine's performance before revving the power for flying starts, Verbena's owner and Executive Chef Scott Morozin prepares meticulously for each cooking shift. "I view each evening as an opportunity to introduce more people to what I know to be the best foods. I'm the vessel to concise dishes, and I aim not to miss. It's great to do what you love." "Verbena is the platform for me to express an unwavering desire for new ideas, new flavor combinations, new methods and new people," says Scott. "Removing barriers, breaking old habits and restructuring the existing into something better is the goal. It’s not just a piece of fish, a cup of coffee, any mundane day of the week. It’s something special. Always." He also intonates, “Cook with heart and soul, and everything else will fall in place.” This hands-on chef enjoys using food as a way to help people open back up after the COVID-19 pandemic. He also savors working with the range of products that local farmers share. "When I'm cooking, an emotional sense takes over. I'm always in a better mood when cooking, happy really," he adds. Verbena customer reviews often cite Scott’s attention to detail and creativity as what makes a meal there a memorable experience. His culinary capabilities commenced in earnest at age 24, where he attended the Culinary Institute of America. He then studied with several prestigious chefs in the Philadelphia region. Now he offers a seasonally inspired menu so diners can take their taste buds on genuine journeys each and every meal. Verbena's intimate setting includes 36 seats on the dining room floor, making it an excellent ambiance for romantic dates, as noted by customers. The eatery's ever-evolving menu includes prix fixe three-courses, six-course tasting options and family-style meals. Scott dedicates himself to changing the way his guests see food through his artistic gastronomic plates, including his catering choices. Similar to his eclectic musical tastes, his cuisine is steeped in local culinary dialect. "Cuisine is regional and relative. Our restaurant dishes are authentic, and as close to Chester County's culture as possible. Why not celebrate that and make the restaurant a destination in itself? Why would you not?" he poses. With a pro-smaller theory approach to food that isn't confined to predetermined menus, this chef proclaims he stays in the present, focused on quality, not mass productions. He says he loves it when guests tell him that his unique dishes inched them out of their comfort zones to try food they don't believe they typically would have chosen from menus. He proclaims Verbena servers also are second to none, with dedication and determination to engaging with diners in respectful yet high-caliber ways.
