May Goes To Lovely Ladies

AD DESIGNER

Our annual May edition, which traditionally is dedicated to local women, is one of the most popular magazines with readers each year. Likewise, we enjoy paying tribute to all the various ways in which women contribute to our community. Also in support of our monthly theme, you may want to note and join an upcoming, ladies-only golf and networking event: "Gals on the Green." This day at Downingtown Country Club includes a clinic, 9-hole shotgun course from 1-3 p.m. and a reception from 3-5 p.m. with “Taste of Tuscany” food stations. Availability is limited for the 11:45 a.m. clinic, and pre-registration is required. Email mary@chescochamber.org for more details or call 610.725.9100. As I reflect on the women in my life, I'm thankful for each one and the impacts they've made.

Golden Ticket

Luke Taylor Hollywood Bound!

Luke Taylor piano days.

B ACK STAGE | EN TERTAINME NT

Luke started into music at a young age.

A distinctive, contrabass voice recently put West Chester in the national limelight via a singing competition television series, as well as on social media. Resonating from 20-yearold Luke Taylor, that voice was first heard by those who live in his hometown of Thornton/ West Chester and Garnet Valley High School in Glen Mills. That same voice earned Luke a golden ticket to Hollywood. Now a Liberty University sophomore and music student, Luke advanced to the next round of "American Idol" season 20 on March 6 after singing a cover of the class hit “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash in the audition episode. The 2022 series is American Idol franchise’s fifth one to air on the ABC Network. Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and Katy Perry returned as the show's judges, while Ryan Seacrest is hosting again. Carol Taylor, Luke's mother, says much of what's occurred regarding Luke's voice since late December 2020 has been kind of surreal. That's when Luke posted on TikTok a bass line duet of Scottish singer Nathan Evan's cover of "The Wellerman/ Soon May the Wellerman Come," a 19th-century whaling tune and the song that sparked the sea shanty craze that swept the social networking app in early 2021. Luke's post subsequently went viral. "His eyes were huge when he walked into the room the next morning and announced, 'Something of mine just blew up,'" Carol recalls. She says Luke and his brother, Sam, always have loved singing and being in plays. "My husband, Rob, is the musical one. He plays piano and guitar, and used to grab the kids to sing with him. It was just part of our normal household," says the teacher at a home school facility for prekindergarten through senior level. "But I never thought it would lead to anything like this." Luke says his voice didn't drop to a deep basso profundo until he was going on 17; that's considered the deepest possible vocal register. "I went from being 4-foot-11 and singing alto to 6-foot-1 and singing bass," he says. Carol says Luke received so many comments on his lower voice, he considered pursuing a career in broadcasting. "But, he's definitely always loved singing. And the positive feedback on TikTok gave him encouragement." Last March, Luke went to Los Angeles to take part in Season 2 of FOX’s show, “I Can See Your Voice,” through which a panel of judges guesses whether contestants look or act like a quality singer. However, he didn't advance past the first round in that show. “American Idol” scouts appeared to develop an interest in the budding country music artist last year after seeing his popularity grow on social media, as evidenced by his 2.5 million followers on TikTok.

Luke's 23-year-old sister, Abigail Taylor, says the family is proud of him, and glad that he's getting to show the world his vocal chops. "It was stressful for us to see him compete, but he has an amazing voice, and he's charming and fun. So we were confident the judges would want to let him through, even if they didn't love his [audition] song," Abby adds. Sources indicate the auditions rounds of "American Idol" 2022 took place from Aug. 5, 2021 to Oct. 28, 2021. Luke says it was exciting to film for the show in Nashville, Tennessee. He says he was on-site each day from about 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. “The actual experience was really fun," he adds. Besides filming in usual locations in California, this season's show reportedly also was filmed in Austin and Disney Aulani in Hawaii. "Voices like you have, there's always a place for them," Luke Bryan told Luke during the audition. Carol says it was fun to have friends over to watch the audition night. "And it's been great with people reaching out to say they've seen Luke on TV. But this is something I never thought would happen in my life," she adds. Jacob Couch, with Liberty's Office of Communications & Public Engagement, confirms that at the university Luke sings with the School of Music’s Chamber Singers, and is also the bass vocalist in the school’s a cappella group, Shine. During the October 2021 Homecoming Concert, Jacob reported that Luke was asked to join alumni Guy Penrod (’85), Mark Lowry (’80), and Jody McBrayer onstage for a song. What about this aspiring singer's competition for a recording contract and a shot at wealth and fame? As a nature lover, Luke has been quoted as indicating that his dream job is to tour the United States as a country singer, and to be a family man who lives on a farm near Nashville is his dream life. And yes, he admits he hopes to tour at some point with his country music inspiration and fellow bass singer, Josh Turner. CONTINUED >

Editor's Note: At presstime, the full schedule and live show airing dates for "American Idol" had not been announced; however, it appeared that Hollywood Week would start broadcasting on March 28. Luke was the only 2022 contestant from Pennsyvlania. Although Luke didn’t advance from Hollywood Week, West Chester residents were sure rooting for luke.the.voice_.

Elite image stylist Brigid McGrath Stasen founded Bridge Your Style in 2019 so she could personalize shopping experiences for clients seeking high-quality, wearable clothing, jewelry and accessories. "I help women bridge their style and impeccable fashion to elevate their confidence to live every day with ease. My other aim is to make shopping extremely enjoyable," Brigid explains. "I love making women feel, and know, they're beautiful." Bridge Your Style clients can make private appointments for an individual or a group, shop in person and be fitted at Brigid's showroom within her home in West Chester. She says she also offers virtual appointments and ships items. Additionally, she says she holds trunk shows during which clientele can relax and savor their experience in a different manner. "At the shows, we have samples of all sizes. Attendees can order whatever they like and it's delivered to them directly. Or, if they prefer, clothing can be sent to me, and I will take it to a client's home to fit them," she says. It's "all about wonderful service," suggests Brigid, who offers coffee and fruit for morning appointments, or wine and cheese for afternoon and evening shopping. Stemming from working at a ski and tennis shop during high school, Brigid says she learned from that first manager just how important presentation, cleanliness and tidiness of clothing stores can be. She says she also grew up in a fashion-forward home. Throughout her fashion career, Brigid says she opened 125 retail stores for a variety of companies, ranging from J.G Hook, Eagles Eye and Urban Outfitters. She then was asked by a local business owner to take over her Etcetera Collection line, and she ran that agency for four years. Bridge Your Style currently offers two notable brands anchored by designers who create pieces inspired by every woman’s inner passion: Curete Collections and the Freida Rothman Jewelry and Accessory Collections. • Curete provides a highly exclusive fashion line from 17 designers. The company's unique collections are known to evoke feelings of confidence, comfort and beauty -- something for everyone, Brigid suggests. • Born and raised in Brooklyn, Freida Rothman is a second-generation jeweler and an entrepreneur striving to remind every woman of her inner strength. Inspired by the legacy of four grandparents—all Holocaust survivors—Freida’s designs honor resiliency through 14-karat gold over sterling silver contemporary, luxury pieces that reflect her inspiration and elevate Brooklyn grit into wearable glamor for everyday. Brigid says she typically has a 350-piece Curete Collection display for two weeks at her showroom, at least four or five times per year. She has Freida's jewelry collection on-site six or seven times annually. At presstime, she was planning to host a trunk show May 17. For those who work with Brigid online, she says she creates an electronic cart with curated choices from which to select. "Then we can discuss it all by phone. I also offer hassle-free returns and exchanges," she adds. CONTINUED >

Brigid also conducts home closet audits. She says she doesn't charge for this service for clients that purchase replacement clothing from her. Regarding just an audit, she charges by the hour and then donates the unneeded clothing -- mainly to Marian's Attic resale store in King of Prussia whose full proceeds go to Laurel House, a facility that supports domestic violence victims. As a firm believer of providing complete service, she even returns to clients a donation receipt for their tax purposes. "It's definitely satisfying to be part of win-win situations," she admits. Also president of the Philadelphia chapter of FemCity, a business networking group with more than 2,000 active local members, Brigid lends charitable support there, too. They host clothing donation drives for Family Promise of Delaware County, a leading nonprofit that provides 24-hour emergency shelter and a rapid rehousing referral center. "One project that we do is fill handbags with cosmetics and personal care products to provide to the women residents of Family Promise," Brigid adds. "I try to be philanthropic in any way I can. I think it's important that everyone gets the happiness they deserve." 109 Augusta Drive 610.999.2793 BridgeYourStyle.com

Dedicated volunteers happily greet customers at The Woman's Exchange of West Chester, a charitable consignment store with the bulk of proceeds benefiting area nonprofits. Throughout its lifetime since 1943, the Woman's Exchange has been operated at the same location: 10 S. Church St. Originally established after the Second World War, its supporters were linked to service men at Valley Forge. The group eventually joined forces with the Woman's Exchange Federation, a national organization with member shops throughout the United Sates. Consignment purchase options then were set up, which now include art, jewelry, china, crafts, home décor, glassware and small furniture -- antique, vintage and modern. Each sale donates a percentage of the transaction toward a charity. During 2021, these volunteers were able to make a record-setting tally of $35,000 for charitable donations.
