We look forward to another year of serving West Chester and the Brandywine Valley region. This month, we're rallying around the overall theme of health and wellness. Caps off to Phillies superstar Bryce Harper, who recently was presented his second Most Valuable Player Award from the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He shared that he was always trying to work hard for the passionate team fans. The 29-year-old right fielder became the fourth player since 2000 to win multiple MVPs before turning 30. Personally, I admit that I was more than proud of the Penn State Brandywine Men's Soccer team, who I help coach, for winning a national championship. Check out pages 12 and 13 to join us in celebrating these local, super athletes. Kudos also to The Newcomers Club of West Chester members, who donated $1,704 to the West Chester Food Cupboard to assist families in need during the holidays. Happy retirement to Mike Perrone, West Chester’s manager, who steps away as of Jan. 1. Mike served as borough manager for four years and started out working for West Chester borough citizens more than 35 years ago. He worked as director of the building and housing department and as zoning officer prior to being selected by councilmembers to serve as borough manager. Assistant City Manager Sean Metrick takes the reins now. Also, we're pleased to share details about initiatives from new West Chester Mayor Lillian DeBaptiste. Hope good things are in store for all of you in 2022.

The Anastasia Broadway musical transports audiences from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s.

A multitalented Chester Countian gets to play a Russian servant, peasant and comrade lady in the first act of the currently touring "Anastasia The Musical." Then, in Act 2, that same West Chester performer -- Madeline Raube -- shines wondrously in the role of Countess Lily Malevsky-Malevitch, a fun-loving aristocrat. The national touring company of Anastasia came to Philadelphia's Merriam Theater in November, and Madeline was part of the cast. Being Madeline's tour debut, she says she's more than enjoying performing in a show that's inspired by several beloved "Anastasia" films, including the 1997 animated version in which the title character is voiced by Meg Ryan. The Anastasia Broadway musical transports audiences from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Many relish that the storyline is about discovering "who you are yet defining who you're meant to be." The show played in Indiana, Arkansas and Mississippi, before delivering eight performances in Philadelphia. Then it was on to Ohio, New Jersey, Canada and the West Coast for January and February. They return to Pennsylvania July 26-31 to perform at Hershey Theater. The show is slated to tour through the summer, concluding in Boston. Prior to this, Madeline's recent theater credits include the lead role of Nina Volkova in "Life of the Party" at New York City's Provincetown Playhouse and the lead role of Lily Craven in the "The Secret Garden" at NYU's Frederick Loewe Theatre in New York City. She attended Oberlin Conservatory, where she earned a bachelor's degree in classical voice. She then earned a master's degree in musical theatre performance at New York University. In keeping with the magazine's monthly theme of health and wellness, West Chester Lifestyle asked Madeline how she maintained a fitness schedule while constantly on the road. Although she's a Zumba instructor, she admits it's tricky to exercise during a 12-hour a day performance schedule while moving frequently from city to city on a bus. Here's a peek into her pursuit to inject cardiovascular activities into her hectic routine. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/WE STC HE ST E R PA

MAYOR LILLIAN DEBAPTISTE WEST CHESTER'S NEW BOROUGH LEADER HAS 'A-B-C-D' INITIATIVES

20

LOCA LS ON LY | L IFE + CULTURE

West Chester Borough's new Mayor Lillian DeBaptiste says the role is a labor of love, one she's gladly taking on, so she can help work on the town's "good problems," such as revisiting parking concerns and establishing equity among the borough's nine-plus parks. "As mayor, my goal is to build upon the solid foundation begun by Mayor Dr. Clifford DeBaptiste, who in 1994, began turning this town around -- from a shuttered main street into a thriving community," she adds. Throughout the recent mayoral campaign, Lillian stressed the importance of communication and listening. “I’m trying to be the change I wanted to see happen," says the director of DeBaptiste Funeral Homes.

Lillian is working with several groups to plan new, communitywide efforts, such as West Chester Green Team members and chair Margaret Hudgings, to launch an inaugural spring day of "porch concerts." Details are yet to be finalized, however, the concept is about planning simultaneous performances from various types of musicians in different borough quadrants. "We hope to include all types of music, like jazz, blues, folk, opera and instrumental. And we'd like to include educational and cultural opportunities to also work with children, such as perhaps having a logo contest," she says. The new mayor says the borough will begin introducing electronic vehicles into the fleet, as replacement needs arise. "We want to work toward environmental justice and borough equity, especially in parts of town that may've been overlooked," says Lillian.

LILLIAN'S A-B-C-D SPECIFIC ACTION PLANS Arts: "The arts are a way we can all share what's most important -- our diverse cultures, family histories, struggles, triumphs, explorations and discoveries. What better way to do this than through cultural celebrations, music, poetry, spoken word, great food and fellowship," poses Lillian.

Balance: "We face a significant deficit in our borough's budget, which impacts the quality of life for residents. Balancing the budget effectively is paramount to the health of our town. I hope to assist with solutions by sharing my business skills," says the new mayor. Clean & Green: "Previous mayors adopted environmental initiatives to keep this town both clean and green; we must continue to invest in increasingly sustainable ways of living. The earth is in crisis, and it's our duty to repair and revitalize our corner of the world in West Chester," Lillian says. Diversity: "2020 was a year that reminded us the work of social and racial justice is far from done, that equality and equity are not the same thing, and that we all deserve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I understand that diversity is more than just a photo or a word. I want to make West Chester a more equitable, inclusive place," she says. LICENSED PSYCHOTHERAPIST DANIELLE MASSI SUPPORTS 'SHADOW SEEKERS' ON MISSIONS TO IMPROVE THEIR MENTAL HEALTH

Self(ish) Philly conference

"Your shadow is the key to your soul," proclaims Danielle Massi, CEO of The Wellness Collective, a Philly-based holistic healing center at 100 S. Broad St. Also a best-selling author, motivational speaker and founder of the Self(ish) Philly conference, this innovative leader believes people can enjoy the life they desire by recognizing hidden triggers of the human body's deep-seated, fight-or-flight reactions. "A great healer isn't someone with all the answers; they're just a guide, leading you home to yourself. You have all the answers within," she says. After battling cervical cancer at age 29, Danielle realized there weren't as many tools to bolster mental/emotional health during physical health crises. Additionally, she learned to trust her own mental core and personal power. This discovery led her to assessing Swiss psychologist Carl Jung's research regarding conscious, subconscious and unconscious states of mind, from which she developed what she calls "The Shadow Movement." Danielle says shadows are parts of ourselves that we've rejected, hidden or buried within our unconscious minds. "Doing shadow work leads to us bringing out traumatic experiences or feelings so we can heal them by recalibrating our nervous systems," she adds. She says when one's brain feels something's too traumatic or irrelevant to hold onto, it buries it to the point the person is unaware it's there -- until an image, sound, smell or break-through

moment triggers its existence. "It's those times when we have a disproportionate reaction to something and are confused about why we're feeling that way," she adds. Via group mentorship or self-study programs, Danielle works through Zoom videoconferences to assist clients in the Chester County region as well as around the world, including the Netherlands, Poland, Australia and Scotland. Her youngest clients are 18, and the oldest one to date is 84 years young. She believes anyone who seeks this type of support should be of the age that their brains are fully formed, because Shadow Work revolves around rewiring the brain's neural pathways. Danielle specialized in trauma throughout her career. "As we work together, I always look for heightened reactions from individuals. I then help them change their body's breathing and thoughts, while we filter out the heaviness of the emotions and experiences we're probing," she says. In fact, she considers the tumultuous past few years for Americans to be "collective trauma" -- tensions and massive panic ranging from conflicting perspectives about war-related post-traumatic stress disorder, Black Lives Matter, the Me Too initiative, political divide and losses related to the COVID-19 pandemic. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM SHADOW THERAPY? Danielle says people typically come to her when they feel emotionally “stuck,” such as:

01 // People suffering from “Big T” trauma, such as accidents/medically induced challenges, rape, addiction, violence or war. 02 // People suffering from what’s medically referred to as “Little t” trauma, which is any time a brain and body feel out of the norm, such as after failed relationships, being bullied, being rejected by not making a team or not knowing how to process parents fighting. Danielle says we’ve all had these, and they can impact one’s life in residual, long-term ways. 03 // When people have been in-therapy for years and feel as though they aren’t progressing in considerations or options to refresh their thoughts and lives. 04 // Those who feel trapped in dead-end jobs, midlife crises, neglected, depressed. LOCAL DOCTOR'S HOLISTIC, DRUG-FREE APPROACH DESIGNED TO HELP THOSE SUFFERING WITH ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

The spine acts as the hard drive for the human body, making it one of the most vital parts of anatomy. "Correcting spinal misalignments can address all kinds of problems besides back pain, such as headaches, stomach issues or problems sleeping. As we gently restore the spine’s correct alignment, the nervous system is calmed and many symptoms disappear," assures Dr. Dennis Mariano, DC, DICCP, ICCSP, and founder of Mariano Holistic Life Center, Inc. The center provides solutions through unique and customized holistic methods, particularly to injured athletes and children with pediatric issues, such as ear infections, colic, allergies and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders. "It's a beautiful thing to see others bloom into better health and physical activity, and blossom into what they can be once they're healed," says Dr. Mariano, who hosts weekly, online YouTube seminars. From growing up in a family of physicians and nurses, he says the chiropractic field became a calling after it helped him with a physical problem that even doctors couldn’t seem to address as another way to provide useful tips and encouragement. He understands firsthand people's desires to restore mobility. "At a gymnastic class in college, I fell on my neck attempting to do a vault on a pommel horse. While the neck didn’t hurt afterward, several weeks later I began to have stomach pains that wouldn’t go away. Several medical doctors in different specialties were unable to help," he recalls. "As the weeks passed without improvement, a co-worker recommended I try chiropractic instead. To my amazement, not only did the stomach pains disappear, but so did the severe allergy and hay fever symptoms I had had for several years. I was fascinated, and decided to investigate chiropractic as a career." Since he started in the practice in 1992, he says he's seen the same kind of dramatic results happen thousands of times, for all kinds of patients. "It's a very rewarding way to spend my days. We love caring for children, moms and dads, as well as athletes, and helping them get their energy back, too," he adds. The practice's services include: • Chronic pain and difficult cases • Athletic performance and injury prevention • Children • Pregnancy • Holistic health and wellness care • Holistic Chiropractic

He now shares examples of assisting second generation relatives. He recently adjusted the spine of a one day infant whose mother he had adjusted when she was 5 years old. "Many people believe, or have been taught, that unless we feel pain, there's nothing wrong with nerve endings or the nervous system. In actuality, only 20% of the spine's work is about controlling our nerves. The other 80% is devoted to anchoring our life and body functions," says Dr. Mariano. "What's really happening in many cases is that messages from our brains are not able to get to our organs and vice-versa, which can lead to our brains not realizing there is a health challenge until the issue has progressed into a true problem." For example, he says just 40 millimeters of a neurotoxin, such as mercury, in a spine can damage the nerve endings or block up to 60% of the system's functions. The Mariano Holistic Life Center team will celebrate the practice's 30th business anniversary during this August. "Our hope is always to identify the root causes of health issues and to help you live life to the fullest again," assures Dr. Mariano.

MVP and More ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

PHILLIES SUPERSTAR NABS SECOND NATIONAL LEAGUE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD IN HIS CAREER

Phillies right fielder Bryce Harper, 29, became the fourth player since 2000 to win multiple MVPs before turning 30. He joined Mike Trout (with three awards), Albert Pujols (three) and Alex Rodriguez (two). He became just the 15th player in history to win multiple league MVP awards before his age 29 season. Phillies legend Mike Schmidt, who himself was crowned MVP three times, presented the award to Bryce. Bryce slashed .309/.429/.615 in 599 plate appearances over 141 games for the Phillies during the 2021 season. With 101 runs, 100 walks, 42 doubles and 35 home runs, he became just the fourth outfielder in the history of Major League Baseball with 100 runs, 100 walks, 40 doubles and 35 home runs in a season, joining Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds and Stan Musial. The Phillies’ standout player led the majors in slugging percentage, OPS (1.044) and OPS+ (179), and he led the National League in doubles, extrabase hits (78) and Win Probability Added (4.74). Bryce was the National League recipient of the Hank Aaron Award, given annually to the best overall offensive performer in each league as voted on by a panel of Hall of Fame players and fans. Further, he was selected by the Major League Baseball Players Association as NL Outstanding Player of the Year, as voted on by his fellow players. He also was named a 2021 Stan Musial Award winner by the St. Louis Sports Commission in celebration of the year’s greatest moments of sportsmanship and those in sports who embody class and character. Finally, Bryce recently won his second career Silver Slugger Award. But wait, there’s more...

Bryce also was named to the All-MLB First Team as an outfielder, along with Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler named to the All-MLB Second Team as a starting pitcher. Phillies Managing Partner John Middleton says the accolades both received were incredible and are a credit to their hard work and dedication.
