Several counties across Pennsylvania were listed among the healthiest communities in the nation in a new study released by U.S. News & World Report. A total of nine Pennsylvania counties made the country’s top 500 in the fifth annual report, including two in the top 100: Montgomery at 80th, and Chester at 92nd. To rank the counties, U.S. News researchers looked at how nearly 3,000 U.S. counties performed in 89 metrics across 10 health-related categories, including an environmental category new to this year’s list. U.S. News staffers collected data for the rankings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Census Bureau, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the US Environmental Protection Agency, among others.

CCDES Director Retires After Three Decades Of Service

CCIU’s Nursing Program Ranked One Of Best Pennsylvania Nursing Schools

Nancy Jane Newman is a Doylestownbased, 90-year-old artist who spent the last 50 years painting, sculpting and writing poetry and novels. She holds a bachelor's degree from West Chester College. Nancy Jane is putting the finishing touches on this series of four juvenile fantasy books for youths 8 to 12 years old. She recently published a book titled The Very Small Adventures of Anne Katrine, available through Amazon. com, Barnes and Noble, libraries and other bookstores.

Beau Crowding, director of operations with the Chester County Department of Emergency Services, retired after 31 years of service. CCDES is located in the Chester County Government Services Center in West Goshen Township, and serves more than 500,000 citizens in 73 municipalities. The 9-1-1 Communications Center handles more than 300,000 calls a year, equivalent to about 900 calls for assistance a day.

The Nursing Schools Almanac ranked the Chester County Intermediate Unit's (CCIU) Practical Nursing Program (PNP) as one of the best nursing schools in Pennsylvania for the second year in a row. The CCIU’s PNP is an accredited post-secondary program that equips students with the knowledge and skills to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses. In 2022, data was collected from approximately 3,000 nursing schools and campuses nationwide.

Rotary Club Of West Chester Donates School Supplies To WCASD Rotary Club of West Chester members recently donated more than $1,000 worth of school supplies to the West Chester Area School District. The supplies included binders, pencils, erasers, index cards, glue sticks, paper, crayons, highlighters, colored pencils and rulers. Caseworkers for the school district divided the supplies and distributed them to economically disadvantaged students in the district’s 17 schools. Local Restaurant Makes NYT Top 50 List in 2022 Restaurant Andiario, located at 106 W. Gay St., in downtown West Chester made the New York Times 2022 Top 50 restaurants list. The list comes from food reporters, editors and critics who travel around the country. The Times' list highlighted and praised Andiario’s restaurant staff for their use of Pennsylvania produce in Italian cooking. CCIU Recognized With Five National School Communication Awards Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) received national recognition for the staff's communication efforts. The National School Public Relations Association awarded the CCIU’s communication department with five awards for its work during the 2021-22 school year, including a Golden Achievement Award, and four Publications and Digital Media Awards. The Golden Achievement Award was for its "Team CCIU Human Resources Marketing Campaign: Brighter Futures Together," a successful campaign that focused on staff recruitment and retainment. LOCAL FOOD BANKS Giving is an opportunity to be part of making a difference in the West Chester community, especially during November's season of "Thanks." Americans generally believe Thanksgiving is modeled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people. Many still celebrate November as the time for counting blessings of the past year. Following are some locations that accept food donations, monetary funding and volunteers to assist others in need. Group- or neighborhood-led food drives are great ways to quickly contribute. Some now even conduct virtual food drives.

Until the end of December 2022, their organizers state they are open to distribute food to any Pennsylvania resident in need, while continuing to serve people living in the West Chester Area School District.

"I'm grateful for the downtown – for the businesses and people that make it unique and welcoming. I'm grateful to live in a community that gives back and supports one another, and I'm grateful to be part of an organization that makes this such a wonderful place to live and work," she adds. The chamber's largest, community-based event of the year is upcoming: Chester County Hospital Lights Up Holiday Weekends. In 2022, Katie says Lights Up will include the return of the beloved Christmas Parade scheduled for Dec. 2. "Thousands of holiday lights will once again decorate the central streets of the borough from Thanksgiving to Christmas amidst additional festivities during these weekends in West Chester. Parade-goers can expect a focus on all things local, from award-winning floats with local flair by some of Chester County’s most creative designers, to sparkling performances by hometown favorites including nationally recognized marching bands that are exclusively local. Santa has agreed to make his much-anticipated appearance." More event details can be found online at GreaterWestChester.com/ Lights-Up-Christmas-Parade. "Although I'm a summer girl, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I cherish the time spent with family and love when my Dad makes his homemade pumpkin and apple pies," Katie admits.

EXTON REGION CHAMBER OF COMMERCE LAURIE RYAN, PRESIDENT While Laurie was born and raised in Delaware County, she's been a resident of West Chester resident for 19 years and of Chester County for 30 years. "I'm grateful for the history, open space, opportunity and especially the diversity of people and cultures present from Oxford to Phoenixville, Coatesville to Paoli," she says.

“I’m so grateful for having the opportunity to live, work, play and pray in such a wonderful region.”

Chester County Chamber of Business And Industry "As a child, I thought Paoli was the end of the line, and boy, was I wrong. I'm so grateful for having the opportunity to live, work, play and pray in such a wonderful region." The mission of the Exton chamber is to advance economic success of the members and community by providing relationship building, marketing, education, advocacy and community outreach opportunities. Laurie says she's thankful about opportunities to witness the good that the chamber's nonprofit members and organizations do for the community, and to make the connections needed to support these missions. Laurie says their major fundraisers conclude with Casino Night in early November, however, they're enthusiastically planning a Breakfast With Santa event at the Movie Tavern in Exton on Dec. 10. CHESTER COUNTY CHAMBER OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY LAURA MANION, PRESIDENT AND CEO "Chester County continues to be named one of the best places to live in the country, and reasons why are obvious," says Laura, a lifelong Chester County resident. "There's a perfect mixture of suburban, rural and urban living. Each corner of the county is unique. We strike the perfect balance here to live, work, raise a family and retire." Laura grew up in Phoenixville, and says she and her husband recently bought their first house there. She says she's also a history buff and nature lover, so having the ability to visit so many nearby historical sites and beautiful parks "is something you won’t find anywhere else." She adds that she's thankful to be able to collaborate with different groups in various ways, including restaurants, retail stores, museums, cultural sites, community organizations, nonprofits and schools. Chester County Chamber "Whether it’s hosting a networking event or informative roundtable for our members, highlighting a business or nonprofit in our weekly newsletter, lobbying for funds on behalf of a community organization, or visiting a new business, my favorite part of the job is meeting new people who are working to make Chester County a better place for everyone," Laura assures. The chamber's Annual Awards Celebration at Longwood Gardens is Nov. 3. They will highlight an Executive of the Year -- Kim Brumbaugh, LUTCF of Brumbaugh Wealth Management, LLC -- and a Citizen of the Year -- Comcast, as accepted by Dennis Mathew, senior vice president, Freedom Region, Northeast Division, Comcast Cable. Longwood is world-renowned for its gardens, art, history and design and attracts visitors from all over the world to Chester County, Laura adds. They also host monthly Business After Hours events at different member businesses. "We get such an eclectic list of attendees networking: lawyers, bankers, small business owners, nonprofit executives. That’s the beauty of the chamber." In 2023, she says they will get back to hosting various informational forums and roundtables on various educational topics. "Oddly enough, I'm not a fan of the hearty Thanksgiving meal. I'm a huge fan of the fall, though, and another reason I love Chester County is because it has so much to offer in the fall. Whether it’s a pumpkin beer or stout at one of our countless breweries or beer gardens, apple picking at Highland Orchards, a nature walk to see the changing colors of the leaves in Valley Forge National Historical Park, or a beautiful fall day at one of our wineries, I love fall activities," Laura proclaims.

“Align.Space is more than a physical place; we are a community.”

Action is booming at 2 W. Market St. in West Chester, proclaims Diane Miller, Align.Space general manager. "Our concept is very unique. We created a 24/7 professional clubhouse in the historic F&M Building, a boutiquey setting where thought leaders come together and do all things business," explains Diane. "We're membership-based. Our space consists of three floors of jaw-dropping work stations, collaboration lounges, meeting rooms, café, game lounge and studio." Diane says they transformed the traditional concept of coworking spaces by intertwining social concepts. AAUW CELEBRATES 60 YEARS ‘Advancing Equity For Women And Girls Through Education, Advocacy, Philanthropy, Research’ ARTICLE BY CATHY PALMQUIST American Association of University Women (AAUW) West Chester-Chester County Branch members are celebrating 60 years of supporting women and girls. The AAUW mission, focused on advancing equity for women and girls through education, advocacy, philanthropy and research, has been fulfilled in many ways by local branch members. In education: Members started the Teenage Parent Program (TAP), Reading is FUNdamental (RIF), held Educational Equity Roundtables, sponsored the Bookshelf project, Project Piggy Bank, Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), and Let’s Read Math. They continue to support Girls Exploring Tomorrow’s Technology (GETT), Parents/Educators Exploring Technology (PETT), and provide an Alice Lawson Scholarship annually to a non-traditional female student more than 25 years of age whose college education has been interrupted by employment, finances and/or family obligations. In advocacy: Members worked on Protecting the Rights of Youth, Speaking Out and Being Heard, a Warm Line for new mothers, and supported the Chester County Women’s Coalition. They started the West Chester Recycling Center, Imagine the Possibilities program, put together a Chester County Program Resources Guide, and continue to offer Pay Equity and Start Smart programs. In philanthropy and research: Members worked with the Philadelphia Global Water Initiative (PGWI), Wings for Success, Dawn’s Place, the Legal Aid Society of Southeastern PA, Phoenixville Women’s Outreach and The House, Women in Politics, West Chester University Resource Pantry, Girl Scout Leadership Tea, and Decade to Doorways Homeless Prevention. They continue to support many of the local charitable organizations, such as the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County, Chestier County Fund for Women and Girls, Black Women of Chester County in Action (BWCCA), Harriett Jarosh Environmental Education Fund, Laundromat Library League, Community Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA), Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children, Safe Harbor, Home of the Sparrow, and Family Service of Chester County. “We’ve been deeply committed to our mission and to West Chester and Chester County,” says AAUW Chester County Branch co-president Deb Lizwek, “and we plan to continue this commitment for many years to come.”
