Spending more time than usual at home in the last few years led to many homeowners refreshing, or now wanting to repurpose their spaces. “One important goal has been constant, however. We want our rooms to make us feel good and to be beautiful,” says Deborah Bettcher, a Decorating Den Interiors professional based in West Chester. She highlights interesting interior design trends as everyone heads into this fall. Color: Go Bold Bright rooms add a burst of energy. Color is popular in a big way. For the less daring, muted dusty, earthy hues reminiscent of sunsets and deserts can be applied.

“Grays are transitioning to browns, and black is here to stay,” adds Deb. She says for those who want to dive into the bold color trend, it does require a bit of thought and planning to ensure colors coordinate. “Consider two or three dominating colors and mix them into design elements in a repeating way,” she recommends. Do splashes, not pops, she advises. If a bold-colored sofa or accent wall is too much, use lighting, art, rugs, vases, bowls or other accessories to add sprays of color, she adds. Bringing nature indoors is still trending. Using green colors is one way to give an outdoor mood to a room. Deb suggests using green as a backdrop to natural woods and accents in other earthy colors.
Dorothy Draper, an influential decorator in the early 1900s who revitalized the Greenbriar Hotel in West Virginia, believed color not only adds ambiance to spaces, but also influences the mood of those occupying it. In her 1939 book Decorating is Fun, Dorothy offers this advice: “Gather the samples of every color you intend using in your room first, then ask yourself whether you would wear them in one costume. If you wouldn’t, don’t ask your room to do it either.” Textures Textured fabrics, such as bouclé, velvet, leather and corduroy, appeal to the senses and add interest to a room's décor, says Deb. Richly upholstered furniture conveys an attitude of modern opulence, she adds. “Remember to add detail to your custom upholstery. This is especially important if a chair or sofa is going to float in the room. In that case, some contrasting detail on the back can make for a stunning statement,” she says. Look to nature for inspiration for adding texture. The use of stone or wood accessories can both add texture and create a more peaceful outdoor-like sanctuary, she says. Multifunctional A variety of new types of sofa beds, ottomans with storage, and other multifunctional furniture are great additions. One type of sofa, for example, can pull out to one single bed or form a double bed by pulling out both halves. There also are bed units that can be either a bunk bed or single. Deb says they’ve become much easier to convert, too. Sectionals are more prominent and in a wider range of configurations, such as having one end as a chaise. Motion also is optional on more and more pieces, she reminds us.
“In general, furnishing should not be seen as commodities. A beautiful space affects the senses. Create a space that makes you and others feel joyful,” Deb Bettcher recommends.

There's never a boring day at PinkCow Studio, declares Downington-based artist Jeff Schaller. From his studio at 80 Highspire Road, he looks forward to using eye-to-hand coordination and thousands of brush strokes to create on canvas the many images he envisions within his mind. "I always knew I was going to be an artist. In fact, I was doing memes before memes were popular. Getting to where I could paint full time took a while," admits the former graphic and website designer who studied at City of London Polytechnic in England and received a bachelor's degree of fine arts at Arcadia University in Glenside. It was 18 years ago that Jeff whispered so long to his day job and hello to the open-canvas world. He says after he mastered the technical essentials of colors, hues and composition, he developed his own style of art that now always is anchored by three elements: an image, a word and dots.

"I collect lots of images, and then artistically combine those pictures with concepts in my head. I enjoy exploring those combinations, even adding in things like logos, and having fun with creating Aha! moments," Jeff explains. "One example of my play on concepts was when I painted a mural for Iron Hill Brewery, and included a clothes iron in the piece." Known for his pop-art style and desire to also connect to others on intellectual levels, his clients purchase his work at artshows, galleries and online. Jeff says he gets a little hooked on series of artworks, such as the beach theme he was working on at press time. Other series examples are his food, bubble gum, beauty, adstracts, conversations and cinema artwork. During this fall, Jeff says he's working on a new "25 Days of Minis" project, which will result in small, original paintings offered for sale one day at a time starting Dec. 1. "Please watch my social media to know which one is released each day," he says. In addition to this own studio work, Jeff operates and manages the Chester County Studio Tour with approximately 165 artists. The tour typically occurs each May. "Local artists are the soul and fabric of our rich cultural community," he adds.

Commissions are a way to create special pieces that viewers connect with personally, says Jeff. "I take great pride in a working relationship that's established with clients. The work is produced with the same sense of design as my other artwork. Each painting is a recognizable Schaller." Jan and Doug Gianforte, owners of commercial construction business Gbuild in Exton, agree: "Having never commissioned art, we had no idea how the process would work. For our new office, we wanted something special and personal, but didn't know how to communicate what that meant, except we wanted a conversation piece popping with color and interest. Jeff made the process simple and fun. He visited our office while under construction to get a feel for the space, then he nailed it! A just-launched auto styling center opened for West Chester and Philadelphia metropolitan residents at 674 Baltimore Pike, Suite 2, in Springfield. Brad Lloyd, Tint World franchise owner, says his professional team services automotives, boats, UTVs and other recreational vehicles. Prior to opening the retail center, they've been servicing on-site residential and commercial window tinting customers. "We can provide film that's clear to 7% visible light transmission that blocks 99% of UV rays and 85% heat," he shares. "We also have enhanced security films for buildings such as businesses, churches, historic sites or retail locations." He says he's been delighting in informing and educating customers about window treatment options. "I always loved the auto sector, boats and motorcycles," adds the 26-year technology executive who pivoted to the Tint World business model in December 2020. The first Tint World Center opened in 1982 in Tamarac, Florida. Company officials now indicate the business is the leading franchised provider of automotive, residential, commercial and marine window tinting and security film services in the US. Brad says the correct window tinting can reduce infrared heat by up to 85% while minimizing glare. He says treated windows also decrease UV by 99%, which helps protect and preserve hardwood floors, furniture, photos and artwork. "Most people don't realize their property is getting damaged, because the loss happens gradually over time." They offer various levels of privacy tinting as well, along with decorative films. He says some people want to help
cover large front doors that are seethrough, or to provide some privacy for conference rooms. For that, he says they have film options that even look like etched glass. "We enjoy solving issues for our clients. For instance, we were contacted by one client because they struggled to get their kids' bedrooms cool in the summer. Both rooms are over the garage and take a beating by the morning sun. In addition, the rest of the home heats up significantly with the glass entry door and front windows taking in the full sun," explains Brad. "Our client selected our highest performing film for 80% IR heat reduction, 58% glare reduction, 99% UV protection and 36% Visible Light Transmission (VLT). You could immediately feel the difference." He says they help customers understand that window tinting in homes or buildings versus autos requires a different approach due to larger space being protected.
