in our community. See page 12 for inspiration from local female leaders in our spotlight. We're proud of the women here in West Chester, and want you to know that you're a unique and crucial part of who we are as a whole. Spoil yourself this month and enjoy the celebrations. In this issue, you can read about fellow, local women, and maybe even make a new connection. If you’re interested in someone’s story, try reaching out on social media to learn even more. You never know what new opportunities and partnerships could come from it. We're also proud of Constance Case, Gretchen Studlien-Webb and maria urrutia, who are West Chester University associate professors who created an immersive performance and unique exhibit made entirely from post-consumer waste. Their project revolves around six dances with stories of change, featuring WCU students and recent alumni as the performers. A big-top tent was constructed from thousands of plastic bags, and costumes were made from plastic bags, soda cans, hula hoops,

Several police officers underwent extensive training to learn how to quickly identify fake ID cards. For this reason, they say it's important that everyone understand the serious legal ramifications of using a fake ID.
INFUSION OF NATURAL, COLORFUL VITALITY COMING TO WEST CHESTER Representatives of the West Chester Business Improvement District were scheduled to enter into a three-year contract with a local landscaper to handle plantings and maintenance of a series of flower beds and planters in Downtown West Chester. The contract starts this May and ends in April 2024. The district was established in 2000 to fund and implement programs that reflect three general goals: increase customer traffic and sales; retain, expand and recruit viable businesses; and to advocate the interests of downtown to government agencies. The district's funding is generated by an annual assessment shared by all commercial properties in the district. The group's vision is to bolster a healthy, vibrant, diverse

GRATEFUL FOR ALL WE HAVE
WITH EVERYONE COMING OFF THE ROLLER COASTER YEAR OF 2020, ALL ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO TRULY FRESH STARTS THIS SUMMER. The West Chester Lifestyle team wondered how others are maintaining optimism and bolstering nurturing spirits. Things we hope for and think about. So, because May is commonly considered a month devoted to women each year, we asked some of the women of West Chester the following questions: For the remainder of 2021, what do you most want for 1) yourself; 2) your business; and 3) our community? And, what's your inspirational mantra or favorite quote for this year? Last year was a reminder that nothing is impossible, permanent or unchangeable. One aspiration to apply to 2021 is: Don’t let the pursuit of perfection get in the way of progress. It may be difficult to have a perfect 2021, but we can keep progressing!

FOR SELF: To spend more time with people I love and enjoy. I want to become more involved in the community and expand my circle, adding more friendships, and grow from those around me. I’d love to influence and help others in uplifting ways. My goal is to compliment others, do random acts of kindness and to try to share a positive outlook, no matter what has happened, because I believe we always have things to be grateful for. FOR BUSINESS: Of course it’s always about growth of the business, but at the heart of what I do, it is simple--help women feel better, look better and be better. Find happiness and balance within themselves. Show them how amazingly wonderful they truly are. My business helps women balance hormones, lose weight and pinpoint exactly what foods put weight on but it’s more than that. I see women regain confidence, pride, selfworth and deeper happiness with themselves, which helps in all their relationships. It’s why I love what I do; I’m anxious to share this with anyone who’s willing. FOR COMMUNITY: We have over half of the year left, and I’d like to see our community come together to celebrate life. Feel free to shake hands, hug and enjoy each other’s company. Realizing we’ve taken some of the small things for granted for too long, we can embrace how precious life truly is. Gratitude for all we are and have as humans, women, people and communities. Learn to enjoy life again. Breath slow deep breaths of the clean, fresh springtime air. CHESTER COUNTY HOSPITAL NURSES AND CHIEF NURSING OFFICER REMAIN FRONTLINE HEALTH HEROES
ANGELA COLADONATO, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, IS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF NURSING OFFICER AT CHESTER COUNTY HOSPITAL PENN MEDICINE. She has 35-plus years of health care administration experience, and has held her current position for nearly 15 years--maintaining a focus on excellent patient care, clinical program development and nursing emotional intelligence. This local leader received the Medallion for Excellence in the Administration of Health Care Services from Villanova University College of Nursing in 2017. West Chester Lifestyle was privileged to discuss with Angela what it’s been like for her 960 nursing staff to battle one of the worst-ever, most emotionally anguishing health crises. WHAT SKILLS/TRAITS ENABLED CCH NURSES TO RISE TO HANDLING SUCH A LIFE-THREATENING, CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC SITUATION? We’re proud to be one of only 552 (American Nurses Credentialing Center) U.S. Magnetdesignated organizations. In Magnet organizations, nurses have strong voices in decision-making, and CCH nurses had that voice throughout this pandemic. The nurses’ feedback improved our processes.

HOMETOWN HERO (CONTINUED) CCH employees execute the hospital’s iCARE values (innovation, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellence) in all they do for patients and the community. These values couldn’t have been exhibited more strongly as we dealt with the pandemic. PLEASE DESCRIBE ROLES THAT NURSES SERVED DURING THE PANDEMIC. At the beginning, there was fear among frontline staff. Nurses were the one caregiver who had to be in rooms with COVID-19 patients and to assume many support departments’ roles--dietary, housekeeping and lab. Additionally, nurses helped in the COVID testing center, virtual visiting platform, and in the vaccine clinic. Nurses helped with Penn Medicine’s call center to field calls from patients about COVID, and with getting patients tested, too. ANGELA, YOU’VE A REPUTATION AS A STRONG LEADER KNOWN FOR YOUR INTEGRITY. WHAT DID YOU DO DIFFERENTLY TO MODEL BEHAVIOR/MINDSETS DURING THIS UNUSUAL LAST YEAR? As the CNO, I felt a lot of responsibility for employees’ well-being and safety at the hospital, and trying to make what they do every day as painless as possible, given both internal and external pressures.

HOMETOWN HERO (CONTINUED) WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF REGARDING CCH NURSES? It’s a privilege and an honor for me to work with such a professional, engaged, resilient and exceptional team of nurses, as well as all of the health care team. WHAT EXAMPLES OF LOCAL COMMUNITY SUPPORT WOULD YOU LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT? The community was amazing with truckloads of PPE donated, food that was supplied, masks that were sewn. School children wrote beautiful cards and drew pictures of our health care heroes and sent them to the hospital. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU’RE FACING DURING 2021? Recovery from a very difficult year, both emotionally and financially. COVID-19 isn’t completely going away, and how do we manage that as we get back to some semblance of normalcy? Dealing with the moral distress that was left behind from the pandemic. Try to avoid seeing crises as insurmountable problems. We can’t change that highly stressful things happen, but we can change how we respond to these events and try to look to a better future.

FEELING GOOD FROM THE INSIDE OUT
LOCAL WOMEN WHO TACKLED DETOXING THEIR BODIES WHILE FINDING NEW, HEALTHY BALANCES THROUGH NON-MEDICAL, HOLISTIC APPROACH

West Chester Lifestyle | May 2021
HELPING WOMEN FEEL, LOOK AND BE BETTER BY FINDING HEALTHY BALANCES WITHIN THEMSELVES IS THE DAILY FOCUS OF LINDA BARILANI. As franchise owner of BeBalanced Hormone Weight Loss Center of West Chester, she says natural weight loss accompanied by better sleep, improved moods and increased energy is truly achievable. Linda says hormones can be balanced without using prescriptions or systemic therapy. “We guide clients in establishing a whole-foods diet that’s combined with our proprietary, all-natural, hormone-balancing supplements, one-on-one coaching and relaxation tools to help them stress less and enjoy life more. We work with each client to come up with individual plans,” she adds. Medical studies show more than 80% of Americans are struggling with a condition called leaky gut, which is caused by microscopic tears in the intestinal lining that cause seepage. The body views that bacteria as an invader and attacks it; this causes inflammation, which causes a myriad of problems. Leaky gut can be prompted from excessive stress, poor eating, hormonal imbalances, toxin overload, bacterial imbalance or genetic predisposition. Some symptoms are gas, bloating, indigestion, sinus problems, headaches and bowel issues. This condition can cause IBS, autoimmune diseases, celiac disease, esophageal cancer, allergies, respiratory infections and thyroid issues. “Our program helps address food issues by using the AIP diet. We add in a probiotic that helps clean your intestines of excess bacteria, Intestamend to heal the intestines, a micellized vitamin D to build immunities back up and curcumin to help with inflammation. This is a comprehensive, 60-day program to heal leaky guts, and help you to feel and look fantastic,” says Linda. WestChester@BeBalancedCenters.com 484.999.2133 BeBalancedCenters.com

There was just no other option then being disciplined,” she adds. “I felt much more energy along the way and slept great.”
Denise Rushing says she had tried everything to lose weight. “Nothing worked, post-menopause. Balancing my hormones was absolutely key.” “Based on previous attempts to lose weight, I honestly expected to again be disappointed. I’m so happy to report I was anything but disappointed. It was life-changing!” explains Denise. “BeBalanced absolutely works, and I believe is the answer. Once you get started, the numbers speak for themselves,” she assures.

imbalances as middle-age women is viewed as a norm, rather than something we don't have to live with. I didn't want to lose weight with a yo-yo diet that wasn't sustainable," she says. Heather explains her sister-in-law participated in the BeBalanced program last spring and had great results. "We have similar body types and she's also a nurse. She does research, so when she recommends something, I can trust it. She's not one to go for fads. She'd been exercising and still not losing weight until

she did BeBalanced." Since Heather embraced her BeBalanced program in July 2020, she says she feels much better about herself. "I feel better in clothes, walk every night, have so much more energy and fewer migraines. My skin is clearer, my face is thinner and the muffin-top belly is gone!" she exclaims. Being able to break her sugar addiction shocked Heather. "The first month is a big change, but once you start to see progress, it propels you forward. And I was surprised by the amount of compliments I got. The success motivates me to continue making healthy choices. I don't look at this as a diet, but rather a healthy eating plan that fuels my body." "It's the best investment in my health I've ever made. It makes total sense and is sensible," concludes Heather. Robyn Seabrease says she needed to take back her life. "I was unhappy with my body and how I felt, despite my best efforts with other programs. I decided it's time to take care of myself, which would make me better able to take care of others and manage the day-to-day stresses of my professional and personal life," she recalls. Robyn began her BeBalanced program in January, and hoped to get rid of a constant bloating gut feeling, hot flashes and loss of concentration/focus. "Now that I'm fully engaged in this program, I look and feel great. My energy level immediately increased, my brain fog was lifted and the random hot flashes I'd been experiencing went away. My belly started feeling better and I could see the pounds melting off of me, which certainly improved my mental health," confides Robyn. One surprise for Robyn was how much she enjoyed the essential oils/relaxation part of what she considers the well-rounded

BeBalanced program. "I'm so thankful I opened my mind; it's become a great tool. I was also surprised at how easy and natural the entire program was. It sounded overwhelming, but once you get into the rhythm, it becomes second nature," she says. Robyn says she believes the all-natural products and detoxification of your body is refreshing. holistic, but I can honestly say I look and think about food and my body so differently now. I feel in control and educated in a way I'd never been before," she adds. "I expected to lose weight and feel better, but not to the magnitude with which I almost immediately did. It feels like I got back my life and myself."

VACCINATIONS ARE SECURED. Some believe masks may be a lingering trend. Regardless, from a fashion sense, masks have prompted a renewed emphasis on eyes--the windows to one’s soul. Following are some mask-related tips to consider: 1. Apply plenty of hydrating face moisturizer to protect skin. 2. Use a light-weight foundation that won’t block skin pores. 3. Apply a primer and setting powder to set the foundation. 4. Make eyes ‘pop’ by using shimmery eyeshadows and highlighters. 5. Paint fluorescent eyeshadow precisely onto the lid crease, just like editorial and runway makeup artists do. 6. Try white or rose-gold eyeliner. 7. Find the best shape for eyebrows and keep them styled. 8. Curl eyelashes and apply a few coats of mascara, perhaps using colored mascara. 9. Give foreheads a new fringe through bangs. 10. Consider a vibrant, face-framing color of hair, such as pastel pink, purple highlights or blue streaks.
