A Month of New FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in West Chester. Meet a few of them (and their four-legged friends) and you’ll find what makes the bond between humans and animals so special. We also whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats on page 30 so you can spoil your loyal companions. Cheers to another wonderful month ahead, West Chester. We hope to see you around!

EVERY DAY IS A GIFT. She also knows calling a professional to organize her closets was a gift—to her family and especially to herself. The family has called on The Closet Works Inc. several times since 2004 to organize their closets as they moved to larger homes to accommodate their growing family. Six and a half years ago, Mrs. P. was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and went through chemotherapy and a multitude of surgeries.

16

West Chester Lifestyle | August 2019

“Being organized became very important for my husband and myself, so things would be easy to find and reach,” she says. “I decided to invest in our closets because in this new phase of life I needed a space for meditation and self-care. I cannot believe how my closet has been transformed. I can spend time there for yoga, meditation or to get ready for a special occasion. When there are days that I cannot get up without pain, my kids come in and hang out to have time with me.“ The entire project, 14 closets in all, would never have happened without The Closet Works and its amazing staff members, Designer Jennifer Molinelli and Installation Manager Paul Rumer. “When there were things that came up that needed to be fixed because I misunderstood what was happening, they took care of it,” Mrs. P. continues, “The staff members who did the installation were prompt, courteous, professional, quick and LAUNDRY ROOM

CHARLIE CISSEL’S FACE LIGHTS UP WITH AN INFECTIOUS SMILE AS ANDI, HIS HOME COMPANION DOG, AFFECTIONATELY "KISSES" HIS CHEEK. This interaction delightfully expresses the friendship Charlie and Andi share. Charlie, a triplet, celebrated his 16th birthday and finished his freshman year at Unionville High School in June. He is on the autism spectrum and also has a medical diagnosis of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, a genetic lung disease. A service dog in training shows what he can do.

Andi was trained and certified as a home companion dog by Canine Partners for Life (CPL), a nonprofit organization based in Cochranville. Founded in 1989, CPL’s goal is to increase the independence and quality of life of individuals with physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities by providing and sustaining profession-

Knowing home companion dogs don’t have public access rights, Shari saw to it that Andi received her therapy dog certification so she could accompany Charlie to doctor visits and stay with him if he was in the hospital. Shari was thankful to have obtained the certification when Charlie was recently hospitalized for 2 1/2 weeks. “Charlie wasn’t allowed to leave his hospital room due to his weak immune system,” Shari says. "Andi was his constant companion and helped to keep him calm when he was afraid to face some medical procedures.”

(LAFA) ON A PRACTICE NIGHT OR GAME DAY, YOU’LL FIND HIM AT KELLY FIELD ON WESTTOWN ROAD COACHING BOYS, INCLUDING HIS OWN THREE SONS, IN THE FUNDAMENTALS OF FOOTBALL. When asked what inspires him to be so involved, he said his motivation was a reflection of the generous support he received from the community. “The Chamber has a lot of volunteer opportunities, and somehow we always find people who are willing to help. When I’ve asked for volunteers for the Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic people say, ‘Just tell me when and where, and I’ll be there’. Their willingness to help made me realize I needed to be more involved,” he says. “I’m passionate about football, and I have three athletic boys, so LAFA was an easy choice. I love coaching because I’m giving back in a way that is enjoyable for me. It also gives me more time with my boys doing things they enjoy.” A native of Chicago, Mark has been with the Chamber since 2007, serving as its president and CEO since 2012. He previously worked for Walt Disney World Company and in sports marketing for Lincoln Financial Group and Pepsi North America. He and his wife, Joanne, a West Chester Area School District reading specialist, have three sons, John (10), Matthew (8) and Jackson (6).

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN BALANCE WITH SO MUCH ON YOUR PLATE? I have a problem saying “no” when it comes to supporting my boys. With that being said, I believe this is a great opportunity to support them, the community and the businesses that support us and West Chester. Sometimes I wonder where I will find the time. And sometimes I feel I don’t have the time. In the end, it all works out, and I find the time and energy to make a difference. Chamber of Commerce 127 N. High St.
