AS JULY BEGINS, MANY OF US WILL BE CELEBRATING OUR NATION’S BIRTH WITH THE TRADITIONAL PARADES, BACKYARD BARBECUES AND EXTRAVAGANT FIREWORKS DISPLAYS. It’s also a great time to take a walking tour of the historic buildings and monuments found in the heart of downtown West Chester. Some of the structures stand unchanged since they were built, according to Malcolm Johnstone, executive director of the West Chester Business Improvement District. Wells Fargo Bank, for example, at 17 N. High St., opened in 1837 as First Bank of Chester County. The building was designed to be a bank, and it continues as such. Others have been altered to serve a new purpose. The West Chester Armory Building at 226 N. High St. opened in 1916 as home to the National Guard’s Bravo Company. The armory was transformed into a multi-purpose, multi-stage theater venue and opened in 2017 as Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center. The Historic Chester County Courthouse and the Lincoln Building, featured here, are among the local landmarks listed on the National Register of Historic Places. HISTORIC CHESTER COUNTY COURTHOUSE Location: 2 N. High St. On July 4, 1846, the cornerstone for a new courthouse, designed by Thomas U. Walter, was laid as construction began that would replace the first courthouse of 1786. It now stands as the historic Courthouse of Chester County, becoming one of Walter's greatest architectural achievements and West Chester's iconic structure. On Feb. 22, 1848, the new courthouse opened. Due to a lack of funds, the facade was brick rather than the stone facing you see today. In fact, it took more than 10 years to entirely face the structure with Pictou stone, which finally completed it. The oldest part of the Courthouse is the Clock Tower, also designed by Thomas U. Walter, and first placed on the original courthouse in 1838. It crowned the new Courthouse when it opened in 1848. A public drinking fountain, which ran water continuously from an underground spring, was placed in front of the Courthouse in 1869 to provide "water for people, horses and dogs" from separate drinking bowls. THE LINCOLN BUILDING Location: 28 W. Market St. In need of offices for his growing development business, West Chester resident William Everhart built a three and one-half story structure at 28 W. Market St. in 1833. When built, it was at the end of a row of commercial buildings. The Federal-style Everhart Building was the Borough’s first true office building. It is considered one of the most historically intact sites in West Chester. Abraham Lincoln’s first biography was written and published in the lower level office in 1860. In recognition of the biography’s historic significance, the Chester County Historical Society re-dedicated the structure in 1947 and officially named it the Lincoln Building. The lower-level office, now a restaurant and tea room, is open to visitors during business hours.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
