There is something extraordinary about the women of West Bloomfield. Not always in grand, headline-making moments but in the thoughtful and quietly powerful ways they lead.

As we gathered stories for this year’s Women’s Issue, I was reminded how fortunate I am to have a front-row seat to this remarkable community. Each conversation and each portrait provides a glimpse behind the scenes, revealing something deeper than accomplishment alone.

Here, there is resilience. There is vision and drive and determination. And woven throughout is something even more meaningful: a sense of purpose that is guided by compassion.

Women in West Bloomfield share a conviction softened by grace and an ambition grounded in generosity. It feels like a mosaic of bold, vibrant passion layered over a foundation of empathy, sacrifice and care for others. It's truly an honor to share even a small part of these stories.

This issue is not simply about celebrating success. It’s about understanding what fuels it. The balance between strength and softness, confidence and humility, ambition and heart. There's a common thread connecting them all of our features: a commitment to something larger than themselves. To community. To impact. To lifting others as they rise.

It’s a style of leadership that may not always seek the spotlight, yet its influence is undeniable.

How I discovered pain relief and better skin through infrared and targeted light therapy

What if feeling better didn’t require a complete lifestyle overhaul? Just an hour to yourself a few times a week?

That’s the question I had when I stepped inside beem Light Sauna, now open in West Bloomfield. I had heard about infrared sauna and red light therapy, but like many people, I wasn’t exactly sure what “light therapy” meant or whether it could really make a difference.

The first surprise came immediately. As I walked in, a smiling member of the all-women team came around the desk to greet me personally. You don’t see that anymore. Her welcome felt warm and authentic, setting the tone for the entire experience.

Owner Mike Bergmann, a lifelong athlete, was drawn to the concept for similar reasons: Creating an experience where simple therapies can help people feel better in real life.

“I was drawn to the fact that people can actually feel better after one or two sessions,” he told me. “Then, with consistency, you start to experience long-term benefits as well.”

The experience is intentionally simple. After a brief explanation, guests settle into a private therapy room. Some listen to music, others meditate or simply enjoy the quiet time. Sessions can be individual or paired with a friend, perhaps infrared sauna followed by red light therapy, depending on your goals.

Within minutes, the first thing you notice is stress relief. Sitting in the gentle infrared heat works differently than a traditional sauna, warming the body directly rather than just the air around you.

Muscles loosen. Breathing slows. It feels like pressing pause.

But the benefits go beyond relaxation. Infrared sauna use has been associated with improved circulation, reduced muscle soreness and cardiovascular support.

Red light therapy uses targeted wavelengths of light to support skin health, reduce inflammation and promote recovery. It’s a shorter session, but one that leaves you feeling refreshed and recharged.

What stood out most wasn’t just the science. It’s how this translates into real life: a lingering sense of calm, less tightness and more energy. The kind of improvements that add up over time.

In a world of constant stress and fatigue, having a simple way to reset can make a meaningful difference. For me, it becomes part of a recovery routine. For others, it’s a way to unwind, improve sleep or support skin health.

Mike’s interest in recovery began years ago after tearing his ACL before his senior lacrosse season. The long rehabilitation process introduced him to the importance of reducing inflammation and consistent therapy. After playing multiple sports, he developed a strong understanding of body mechanics, recovery and wellness.

“I’m always looking for ways to recover so I can keep doing the things I love. Once that’s taken away, you realize how important it is to take care of your body,” he says.

Behind the business is a strong family foundation. Mike credits his wife, Kylie, for her support as he launched the West Bloomfield studio while balancing career and family life. Together they are raising three young children – Keira, Luca and Margot – who keep him active and reinforce his passion for longterm health.

AUDREY RAY WRITES IN THE LANGUAGE OF FEELING –SOFT, SINCERE AND IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE

WHERE MUSIC LIVES

Some songs don’t start with melody. They begin with a feeling you can’t quite name. For Audrey Ray, music often arrives that way, from memories that refuse to dissolve. “I always go to music at defining moments of my life,” she says. “After a sad experience or heartbreak, I write it down. I know I can translate it into a song.”

That instinct makes sense when you realize music was part of everyday life growing up. Her father performed in southern rock bands across Michigan and music filled the spaces in between. Family ties to Tennessee meant regular visits to the heart of country music culture.

“We’re a big country family. It was always around me,” she says. “I sang everywhere I went.”

That foundation became something more when she moved from school choir to local coffeehouses and clubs. Then, in 2012, her original song Reckless was played on Detroit country station WYCD-FM.

“That made me feel like, yes, I can really do this,” she says. “Nothing compares to hearing your song on the radio.”

Until she was invited to perform opening night at Michigan’s famed Faster Horses Festival.

“You look out and see so many people, and it’s just wild,” she laughs. “My career really took off after that.”

By day, Audrey Ray serves as Grassroots Marketing Manager for LaFontaine Automotive Group. But when the workday ends, she trades slingbacks for boots, and the stories she’s carried throughout life begin to take shape.

Her songs feel like confessions, shaped by the courage to revisit heartbreak.

Consider Cigarettes and Ashes , unfolding like a memory you wish you could forget – when a rich relationship has gone broke.

“It’s that realization it meant more to you than the other person,” she says. “I think a lot of us have been there.”

Even her lighter songs carry motion. 68 Mustang, co-written with Dale King and Mia Green, is playful on the surface, but there’s something deeper underneath.

“We wrote that one really fast,” she recalls. “Sometimes those are the songs people connect with the most.”

Sparks, co-written with Dave Fuller and refined with producer Tim Patalan of the rock band Sponge, captures life after uncertainty. Around the same time the song was taking shape, Audrey Ray met her boyfriend, Dominic, and the lyrics suddenly carried new weight.

“It was weird how it lined up,” she says. “The song is about finally feeling sparks again and that’s exactly what was happening in my life.”

That authenticity has carried her onto increasingly prominent stages, opening for Uncle Kracker, Travis Tritt and, in one of the defining moments of her career so far, Clint Black.

“He was so nice,” she smiles. “He encouraged me to keep going. Coming from Clint Black, that meant everything.”

She’s now celebrating the launch of her debut album, Cigarettes and Ashes, developed with Patalan and recorded in collaboration with Nashville producer Kent Wells, known for his work with Dolly Parton. Recording in her environment –using her microphone – elevated her singing while preserving honesty at its core.

“It was mind-blowing to hear my work come to life. You could almost feel a little Dolly in the room, singing into her mic.”

On stage, backed by her six-piece band or standing alone with a guitar, she leans into the moment and lets the music breathe.

“It’s amazing to hear thousands of people singing your songs with you –feeling something with you,” she says.

And when that happens – when the crowd joins in – the songs stop belonging only to her. They belong to the room.

It’s why she continues. She’s not chasing the spotlight. She’s following the feeling.

And wherever it leads, the music follows.

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

IN HER OWN WORDS, A LOCAL ENTREPRENEUR SHARES HOW GIVING BACK IS SIMPLY GOOD BUSINESS

“Businesses have an incredible opportunity and responsibility to be forces for good.”

Philanthropy isn’t separate from business for me; it’s a natural extension of it.

Cleaning homes is really about caring for people, so giving back has always been easy. We look for ways to support those who serve others or are facing difficult times. We love participating in Cleaning for a Reason, where individuals undergoing cancer treatment can receive two months of free home cleanings. During such a challenging time, a simple home cleaning can provide comfort, dignity and one less thing to worry about.

One of the programs closest to our hearts is proudly supporting first responder families through our Heroes First Initiative, partnering with First Responders Children’s Foundation. A portion of every cleaning supports them and their families in Oakland County, with our corporate office matching those donations.

As part of this initiative, we host a contest where a first responder and three guests can win an all-expenses paid trip to New York City for the Thanksgiving Parade. We also offer scholarships up to $5,000 for graduates who are children or grandchildren of first responders, investing in the next generation.

We participate in many more community events, like trunk or treat with the Farmington Hills Police Department and the M.A.L.A. Child and Family Institute to donating fundraiser items and participating in parades. We also support the Chamber’s Women+ Business Committee Holiday Charity Luncheon, an annual event where the business community supports different charities each year.

Supporting local schools is also important to us. We frequently sponsor their major fundraisers like Color Run and often step in to help with milestone events, such as covering the cost of a bounce house for a fifth-grade celebration or putting up a business banner for the high school basketball team.

Once you start looking for ways to give back, you will find them everywhere.

Personally, leadership means showing up beyond the business. Volunteering in community fundraisers such as The Family Feud supporting CARES Food Pantry and the Xemplar Club are other examples that remind me that businesses have an incredible opportunity and responsibility to be forces for good.

My advice to other businesses is simple: make philanthropy part of your culture, not just a campaign. Choose causes that align with your values. When giving back becomes part of your every day, it not only strengthens your community but also builds deeper connections with customers and staff.

People want to support businesses that care. When heart meets hustle, the impact can be truly extraordinary.

Every luxury brand begins with a point of view. What first drew you to the world of fashion, ultimately inspiring the creation of your business, Scarlett’s Leather and Furs?

Madonna Arabo: Growing up, fashion was part of who we were. My mother was incredibly fashion-forward, and with three distinctively stylish sisters, there was always an appreciation for self-expression and the power of being well dressed. That environment shaped how I view fashion as a reflection of confidence and personality. Not about trends, but how the right piece makes you feel elevated. I was especially drawn to the craftsmanship behind high fashion, the richness of genuine leather, the elegance of fur and the timelessness those materials represent. It inspired me to create Scarlett’s, named after my daughter, as a way to bring that sense of confidence, individuality and distinguished style to others.

WBCL: Building an appointment-only experience is both intentional and intimate. Describe the most rewarding part of cultivating your business.

MA: It allows deeper, more personal connections with clients. It gives me time to really understand their individual style and how they want to feel in the pieces they choose. That one-on-one setting creates a level of trust and attention you don’t get in traditional retail environments. My clients appreciate the privacy, allowing them to be comfortable, take their time and enjoy the experience without distractions. It naturally makes everything feel more exclusive and luxurious, aligning perfectly with the essence of the brand. It allows me to guide the business with intention and a refined sense of direction. Without the overhead of a traditional retail model, I’m able to focus on sourcing exceptional pieces and offering them at a value that feels thoughtful and cohesive with their true worth. This ensures clients are investing in luxury that is both meaningful and well-positioned.

WBCL: For women aspiring to build a business in the luxury fashion world, what mindsets are essential for success?

MA: It starts with confidence in your vision and not feeling like you have to follow someone else’s path. It was a difficult choice to transition from owning a trend-driven boutique to completely reshaping my brand to the more meaningful, elevated experience I offer today. I had to quiet my pace and realign my focus to deeply understand my customer. A unique point of view is what sets you apart, knowing exactly what you stand for and staying consistent with it. Also understanding that luxury is not just about product, it’s the experience. Every detail matters: how you present and communicate your brand, how clients feel when they interact with you. Being intentional in those areas makes all the difference. It takes patience; not everything happens overnight. You must stay committed, keep refining your approach and learn as you grow. Finally, trust your instincts and know your worth. Don’t undervalue your product or brand just to compete. When you truly believe in what you’re offering, clients feel it and that is what will build success that lasts.

BERRY BRUSCHETTA

A RECIPE FROM A CUP FULL OF SASS

This Berry Bruschetta is a delightful twist on the classic bruschetta that we all love. This version uses fruit, bringing a sweet element to the traditionally savory dish. With the use of fresh berries, cream cheese, delicious fruit spread, crumbled cheese, and fresh rosemary, it is the perfect addition to your next spring event. This simple, yet beautiful appetizer could be enjoyed at your next brunch, shower or Mother’s Day celebration. But let’s be honest—you don’t need an excuse to enjoy this delectable dish!

INGREDIENTS:

• 12 baguette slices

• Extra virgin olive oil (for brushing)

• 4 oz cream cheese

• 1/4 cup Fruit and Honey Triple Berry Spread (or any fruit spread of your choice)

• 1/3 cup fresh strawberries, sliced

• 1/3 cup fresh blueberries

• 2 oz fruit cheese (such as Wensleydale with Autumn Fruit), crumbled

• Fresh rosemary for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. Lightly brush the front and back of the baguette slices with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

3. Toast baguette slices in the oven for 3-5 minutes or until lightly toasted.

4. Once the baguette slices are cool, spread a generous layer of cream cheese over each slice.

5. Add the fruit spread on top of the cream cheese.

6. Add sliced strawberries and a few blueberries, allowing the vibrant colors to pop. (A great place to find fresh fruit is our local staple, Crystal & Rich’s Produce.)

7. Crumble the fruit cheese over the top for an added layer of richness and depth.

8. Garnish with fresh Rosemary if desired.

9. Serve and enjoy!

Planting Spring Flowers

Helpful tips for planting spring flowers

Sun-Loving Plants:

Spring is here! We compiled a list of flowers that - depending on your planting zone - can be planted in the season.

Plumbago

Has beautiful dark blue or white flowers on a large shrub of 3 to 5 feet. This tends to freeze down in winter and comes back from roots in the spring.

Hibiscus

The tropical variety will not survive the winters so move those pots inside. The plant can get up to 5 feet tall and there are many different colors and varieties. The perennial varieties will freeze to the ground but come back in the spring. The variety Moy Grande is known as the dinner plate hibiscus. The Texas star hibiscus has beautiful flowers in red or white.

Bougainvillea

These colorful plants can be planted in baskets and pots, not in water-logged or low areas where water might collect. They will grow best when given enough space to spread out, and should be planted in an area that will allow them a minimum of 5-6 hours of sunlight every day. Colors include orange, pink, purple, white, red, tangerine and fuschia to name a few.

Purslane

This is great in baskets for trailing leaves with lots of colors. The bees love it!

Butterfly Weed

This 3 to 4-foot bush is a must for monarch lovers. Monarchs feed on the leaves before making their cocoons. It has beautiful orange and yellow flowers.

Shade-Loving Plants:

Lantana

This is a great hot weather plant that comes in many colors and varieties. Trailing varieties only get about 1 foot tall but can get 3 to 4 feet wide. There are bush varieties that get 4 feet tall and dwarf bushes only get about 2 feet tall. It comes in yellows, purples, reds, oranges, pinks, fuchsia, and many others.

Gregg’s Blue Mist

This fuzzy light blue flower is a butterfly favorite.

Pentas

This is another bee and butterfly favorite that grows about 10 to 12 inches tall. There is a graffiti variety in different colors that works in beds or pots.

Vinca/Periwinkle

This plant comes in upright or trailing varieties. There are many colors to choose from: lavender, white with a red center, peach, white and red, pink to strawberry.

Sages

There are many varieties of sage. The Texas sage is a shrub that has beautiful lavender flowers - a favorite for bees. They usually bloom around the time it rains. Henry Duelberg variety is a smaller bush 18 to 20 inches tall with blue stalks of blooms. Russian Sage is a tall silver lacey foliage with light blue flower spikes and grows to 4 feet tall. Deer tend to stay away from most of the sages.

Turk’s Cap

This plant makes a large bush of red or pink flowers. It has low water needs once established and can tolerate drought conditions and hot temperatures. Prune back plant in winter if it gets too leggy.

Impatiens

These need more water than most other plants and come in many colors. They are valued for their vibrant colors, abundant blooms, and tolerance for shade.
