LIFESTYLE LETTER
A Healthier You in 2026 January in West Bloomfield always tells its own story. Drive down Orchard Lake Road and you’ll see it instantly: People bundled up heading into Orchard Mall. Walkers looping around Marshbank Park, even when it’s freezing. Men and women heading into DripIV and LIFT Training, or grabbing green smoothies at lunchtime, in search of healthier options. There’s an energy here, a kind of collective determination that says: We’re ready. Let’s do this. But here’s the truth we don’t always admit: Real wellness doesn’t begin with a resolution posted on Jan. 1. It begins with purpose — with an understanding of why we want to feel stronger, happier and calmer. That’s why this month’s Health & Wellness issue of West Bloomfield City Lifestyle was designed to feel like a deep breath, not a checklist. We’re honored to highlight Herman and Angela Moore, whose story is a masterclass in living with purpose. Their journey — from early personal hardships to careers centered around athletics, mental health and wellness — reminds us that becoming “healthy, happy and whole” isn’t about perfection. It’s about doing the inner work, growing through the challenges and giving yourself the space to evolve. Their message feels especially meaningful here, in a community where so many people are actively investing in their wellbeing. You’ll also meet incredible local women whose lives have been transformed by HotWorx West Bloomfield. Their experiences — strength gained, confidence restored — show how the right community and the right environment can spark real, lasting change. And throughout the issue, you’ll find ideas and resources for building a healthier rhythm in 2026, right here in the place we call home. Wellness doesn’t come from sweeping life changes — it comes from small, consistent choices that honor who you are and who you’re becoming. Here’s to a year of strength, balance and purpose, West Bloomfield. May this be your healthiest and most intentional year yet.

HERMAN AND ANGELA MOORE’S BLUEPRINT FOR BEING HEALTHY, HAPPY AND WHOLE.
ARTICLE BY TODD HAIGHT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DARREL ELLIS
THE POWER
OF PURPOSE There’s a quiet power in the way Herman and Angela Moore enter the photo studio. Purposed together for 37 years, with two grown sons they call the heart and soul of their lives, they speak about each other not in grand declarations but in the seamless shorthand of people who have evolved — gracefully, deliberately — side by side. They speak with affection but it’s obvious they don’t rely just on words. Their chemistry shows in glances, subtle gestures and the kind of comfort that can’t be staged. This is how Herman, a former Detroit Lion, and Angela, a licensed therapist and NASM Master Trainer, move through the world — with an ease that comes from decades of shared purpose. “We’ve always been a partnership,” Angela says. “There were years when I was in school at night or Herman was traveling for football or business. We just stepped in for each other. We didn’t even need to talk about it. We just moved as a team.” Today, Herman’s world centers on entrepreneurship, innovation and mentorship; Angela’s focuses on holistic health and building whole, healed people. Together, they have shaped a philosophy that’s as much about service as it is about success. “We love to build people,” Herman explains. “I do it through entrepreneurship and leadership. Angela does it clinically and professionally. But the goal is the same: to help people become complete.” Their paths were not planned to intersect this way. Angela’s calling was born from pain: losing her mother to a sudden stroke at 13, and years later, her brother to mental health struggles.

“WE JUST STEPPED IN FOR EACH OTHER. WE DIDN’T NEED TO TALK A B O U T I T. W E J U S T M O V E D A S A T E A M.” — ANGELA MOORE
“Very early, I learned the consequences of not knowing your state of health,” she says. “Physical, emotional, spiritual — it all matters. And when you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to handle anything life brings.” Movement became her medicine; service her purpose. In 2010, she founded The Body Principle LLC, now through Empowered by Angela (empoweredbyangela.com). Her integrative health organization based in Troy, with clients throughout Michigan, it provides mental health counseling, integrative wellness coaching, corporate wellness workshops — even school-based youth programming to help young people make healthier decisions in a world that rarely slows down to guide them. Even with the very public role she plays, much of her work, she notes, is “quiet” — unseen, unposted, yet felt deeply. Herman affirms her. “Angela’s work has impacted people for years,” he says. “And not all impact is visible. But it all matters.” It’s a theme that mirrors his own evolution. Widely recognized for his time as a Detroit Lions wide receiver, Herman has spent far longer in business — and with equally impressive impact. His Troy-based enterprise (hermanmoore84.com) spans logistics, branding, manufacturing, social content, technology, personal-care products and more. “Innovation happens when you’re not afraid to step outside the traditional path,” he says. “Every field has rules. But you don’t have to let those rules define how far you can go.” Purpose, for him, begins with clarity. “Define what winning looks like for your business or even your personal life. Then you can work backwards. Set goals. Be disciplined. Stay resilient. Adjust along the way,” he says. “Life has quarters, just like a game. You don’t win games in the first quarter. You identify missteps, make your adjustments, then come back for the win.”

“LIFE HAS QUARTERS, JUST LIKE A GAME. YOU DON’T WIN GAMES IN THE FIRST QUARTER. YOU IDENTIFY MISSTEPS, MAKE YOUR ADJUSTMENTS, T HEN COME B ACK F OR T HE W IN.” — HERMAN MOORE That mindset — forward-looking, unfazed by obstacles — has shaped his leadership philosophy. “Forget titles. Tell me who you are and what you actually do. When you think of yourself as a brand — every day — you carry yourself differently. You show up differently.” Purpose, in their home, is not a lofty concept. It’s daily. Intentional. In their marriage, it means supporting each other
unapologetically — giving one another space to grow without fear of outgrowing. In parenting, it means raising sons who believe they can try anything, fail boldly and still be valued and encouraged. In service, it means meeting people exactly where they are, whether that’s a struggling teenager regardless of ethnicity or socio-economic factors or an entrepreneur trying to navigate a shifting economy. FINDING YOUR PURPOSE: TIPS FROM HERMAN AND ANGELA MOORE Transformation is built through small but consistent choices. From Herman and Angela Moore, here are guiding principles for becoming healthier and more purpose-driven in everyday life.
And in health, it means understanding that transformation is not a moment. It’s a lifetime. “There’s no timetable,” Angela says. “As long as you keep trying, you’re not failing. Every day is another chance to do better than the day before.” “We all seem to define ourselves by what we’ve lost rather than what we’ve gained or learned, don’t we? I did for a long time,” she says. “Now I realize everything in my life has shaped and defined who I am today. And I really like her.” When asked about legacy — what they hope people will feel decades from now because of the seeds they’re planting today — their answers are almost startling in their clarity. “I want people to say they became the best version of themselves because of the work we did together,” Angela says. Herman adds: “I want to be remembered not for the touchdowns, but for who I was as a man. Authentic. Purposeful. Impactful.” “When it’s all said and done,” Angela says, “I want to know we didn’t sacrifice each other for the sake of profit or success. Ultimately — we need to be the goal.”

Start where you are. Don’t be ashamed of your starting point; own it. Every step forward counts. Define your win. Decide what success means to you and work backward to identify the steps you need to take. There’s power in asking for help. It’s the most courageous thing you can do. Protect your personal brand. Live it every day and show up with intention. Don’t sacrifice your personal brand, who you are, for an immediate or temporary gain. Focus on today. Small daily decisions shape your future.

AN ALPINE Take in sweeping alpine views across Switzerland’s Valais region. Photo by Rudi 1976
E S C A P E In Switzerland’s Valais region, wellness and adventure are always part of the same itinerary. Morning could bring a high-alpine hike, afternoon a soak in mineral-rich springs, and evening a table set with traditional cuisine, always including delicious wine and cheese. For travelers, the best part will be finding the perfect balance between exploring the outdoors and relaxing with wellness-infused activities in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

A CAR-FREE ALPINE ADVENTURE IN ALETSCH ARENA
An easy train ride from Zurich lands visitors in the Aletsch Arena, a high-alpine region on the south side of the Bernese Alps, home to three villages: Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fiescheralp. Known for its ski slopes in winter and hiking in summer, the area is entirely carfree, making walking and local buses the main modes of transportation through its quaint chalet-lined streets. One of the main attractions of the ski-in/skiout area is the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 12-mile glacier is visible from several vantage points, shaping every experience in the area.
WHERE TO STAY
Located in the heart of Bettmeralp, Hotel Panorama provides no-fuss accommodations steps away from the picturesque Chapel Maria Zum Schnee. The hotel’s restaurant offers delicious regional cuisine, including raclette paired with Swiss wine. A good bottle of Pinot Noir or Gamay is also easy to come by because the Valais region of Switzerland is one of the largest wine-producing areas in the country, with vineyards dotting the steep slopes of the Rhône Valley. In addition to wine and cheese, eating cholera, a covered vegetable pie invented in the region during the cholera epidemic, is a must.
WHAT TO DO
Goms Bridge over Rhone River. Photo by Marina
Begin at Viewpoint Moosfluh, the closest and lowest vantage point of the Aletsch Glacier. From there, trailheads lead to Villa Cassel, once the home of a British financier and now a museum focused on history and conservation. The hike passes through a thousand-year-old forest with views of both the glacier and the Matterhorn. Walk over Goms Bridge, a nearly 1,000-footlong suspension bridge that connects two hiking areas over the Rhône River. For a final look at the majestic glacier, take the cable car to Viewpoint Eggishorn. At nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Jungfraujoch, or the “Top of Europe,” and the most comprehensive view of the Aletsch Glacier. THERMAL WATERS AND MOUNTAIN VIEWS IN LEUKERBAD
After miles of hiking in the Aletsch Arena, it is time to relax and recharge in the mountain village of Leukerbad.
W HERE TO STAY
Hotel Restaurant Quellenhof Leukerbad is steps away from many of the area’s best thermal pools. The hotel also has a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner with several regional specialties.
WHAT TO DO
View of Valais Alps in Leukerbad. Photo courtesy of Visit Leukerbad
Since the 1500s, the area has been a wellknown destination for wellness and healing due to over 65 natural hot springs that flow into the alpine village. Several public bathhouses welcome visitors year-round, including Leukerbad Therme, the largest thermal wellness resort in Europe. The family-friendly wellness center includes ten pools and a range of hot and cold plunge options. Walliser Alpentherme & Spa and Therme 51 also offer public access to the mineral-rich waters. A hike through Dala Gorge provides beautiful mountain views while traversing a 2,000foot suspension bridge over the Dala River. Hikers can also experience a 100-foot waterfall before the forested hiking trail leads back to Leukerbad. The village is considered one of the most traditional and beautiful alpine settings in the country. It lacks the pretentiousness of Switzerland’s larger metropolitan areas and offers a storybook atmosphere with a friendly small-town feel. Walking through Leukerbad reveals gorgeous chalets, small shops, bakeries, and restaurants worth exploring.
WHERE TO EAT
No trip to Switzerland is complete without fondue. Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, fondue, which translates to “melt” in French, is a national dish consisting of a blend of Gruyere and Emmental cheeses. One of the oldest family-owned restaurants in Leukerbad, Restaurant Sternen offers traditional fondue along with a variety of mix-ins and dipping options. Pair the fondue with

HISTORY AND ALPS MEET IN MARTIGNY
A short train ride takes visitors to one of the largest cities in the Valais region of Switzerland. The city is a crossroads between Italy and France, with a history dating back to Roman times. Visitors can tour Roman ruins, including a well-preserved amphitheater, ancient settlements, and Roman baths.
WHERE TO STAY
Martigny Boutique Hotel is minutes from the train station and is one of the few establishments in the city employing people with disabilities. The light and bright hotel provides a comfortable base for exploring the city.
WHAT TO DO
Take the steepest funicular in the world, the Mont-Blanc Express, on a scenic ascent through the Alps. The funicular connects to a smaller train that leads to the Trient Valley on the French-Swiss border, where, at the top, a full day of activity begins. Hiking, biking, zip-lining, or traversing the Emosson Dam, which straddles France and Switzerland, are all options. The crystal clear blue waters of Emosson Lake are perfect for a picnic or a break between adventures. Back in Martigny, Barryland, the only theme park in the world dedicated to St. Bernard dogs, offers a look at the history of the dog, bred by monks in the 17th century for alpine rescue work. The Barry Foundation, founded in 2005, continues to preserve the breed and educate visitors about it. Guests can watch the dogs train, play, and interact as they learn about their role in the region. Roman influence remains visible across the city, including at Les Bains Publics at Hotel Borsari, where visitors can soak in cement wine barrels located in the hotel’s spa. The baths sit on the site of a former wine tank factory and offer a circuit of hot and cold pools in a historically inspired, wine-colored setting.

The art of being alone: Inside Hotworx West Bloomfield, where the new luxury is a wellness relationship with yourself.
Hotworx West Bloomfield Assistant Manager Maddie Chipman
Heat, Harmony & Healing On a crisp November morning, Amanda Wood steps out of the infrared sauna glowing — cheeks flushed, hair damp, mood unmistakably lifted. Two months earlier, she hadn’t worked out at all. Now she schedules her life around Hotworx West Bloomfield (hotworx.net/studio/westbloomfieldtownship). “I started at twice a week,” she says. “Now I’m up to three. It’s quick and private, and I walk out feeling amazing.” Ask any member why they come, and the answers sound similar: the privacy, the heat, the 24/7 freedom to slip in whenever life allows. But beneath those themes lies

something deeper — Hotworx has become, for many, a relationship with themselves they didn’t know they needed. For longtime member Lisa Welshans, the contrast to traditional gyms is stark. “I love that it’s 24 hours and I never have to wait,” she says. “No crowds, no staring, no pressure. I get in my sauna and it’s my world.” Hotworx is a 24/7 infrared fitness sanctuary with small, private sauna pods offering video-guided Pilates, yoga, cycling and more. Members can work out alone or with one or two others — each session designed to elevate strength, recovery and overall wellbeing. For working mother Rachael Laming, the access is life-changing.
“I travel, I work, I have kids — and most gyms don’t fit into real life,” she says. “Here, I can walk in at 5 a.m. or 9:30 at night and get exactly what I need.” Laming also loves that her teenage daughter can join her. “Most gyms won’t allow young people. Hotworx does.” Nearly every member mentions the heat — the way it loosens tight muscles and seems to melt stress on contact. “I lost 35 pounds from Hotworx,” says Assistant Manager Maddie Chipman, who started with Hotworx as a member. “The infrared works deep into the muscles. You burn more calories and keep burning after you leave. And you feel better. You really do.” Members notice the difference, too. CONTINUED >

“My favorite exercise is Hot Blast,” Wood says of the quick, high-intensity elliptical session. “Fifteen minutes and I’m drenched — in the best way.” Welshans swears by sauna cycling. Tanya Sierra loves Pilates. Laming does them all. “I haven’t found a class I didn’t like,” she says. “Inside the sauna, it’s you, the instructor and your goals. No distractions.” Hotworx is built on privacy, yet friendships form naturally. “I’ve worked out with a few women I met here,” says Sierra. “But if I want solitude, I get it. If I feel social, I can do that too.” And while women fill many of the sessions, men are part of the community as well — drawn to the same privacy, intensity and efficiency. Members credit the staff for the atmosphere — especially manager Kayla Brewer, whom Welshans calls “the sweetest, most attentive person,” always ready with a greeting or a bottle of water. Brewer says she never gets tired of cheering on members. “They tell me they sleep better, their skin is clearer, they’ve lost weight or just feel stronger and more confident.”
Rachael Laming does yoga.
“IT’S REALLY ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOURSELF. IT’S MY TIME TO FOCUS ON MY WELLNESS.” – RACHAEL LAMING The secret? The infrared environment makes workouts more effective in less time. “You come in anytime, pick your session and get results without spending hours in the gym,” she says. “There’s nothing like it.” As the stories overlap, one theme rises above the rest: Hotworx is deeply personal. “It’s really about your relationship with yourself,” Laming says. “It’s my time to focus on my wellness.” In a world full of noise, deadlines and crowded gyms, Hotworx West Bloomfield offers something distinctly luxurious — a clean, quiet space where members strengthen their bodies, reset their minds and rediscover themselves. One infrared session at a time.

HEALTH
Amy Bellinger is on a mission — one that was inspired by changes in her own life. A longtime interior designer, the fitness enthusiast realized the same desire to create comfortable, beautiful spaces for her clients’ homes also applied to their health. “As a woman in my late 40s, I experienced firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate hormone shifts, stubborn weight gain, energy dips and poor sleep,” the West Bloomfield resident says. Discovering FASTer Way to Fat Loss, a fitness program that helps clients to lose weight and gain muscle while teaching them how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Bellinger (fasterwaycoach.com/?aid=AmyBellinger) discovered that “wholefood nutrition, strategic strength training and sustainable habits could completely transform how I felt in my body — and change my body composition,” she says. “After my own health transformation,” Bellinger says, “I felt drawn to health coaching to help others feel stronger, healthier and more confident.” Being a coach, she says, has “allowed me to guide so many women back into the confidence they thought they had lost.” Here, a few of her favorite helpful tips.

Amy Bellinger helps clients to teach their body to burn fat for fuel through intermittent fasting, carb cycling, macro tracking and effective 30-minute at-home workouts. “I help midlife women burn stubborn belly fat, build muscle, balance hormones and create sustainable healthy habits through whole food nutrition, strategic strength training and mindset coaching,” she says. Gone, she adds, are the days of undereating and overexercising.

• Batch Cook “I keep my food simple and family-friendly — when you have foods prepped and ready to go, you’ll be far less likely to grab mindless snacks because the nutritious choice becomes the easy choice,” she says. “I batch-cook protein like chicken, ground beef, turkey and hard-boiled eggs so I always have healthy options available. I do the same with my vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and Brussels sprouts so meals come together in minutes. While my vegetables are roasting I’ll add in sweet potatoes and cook rice a couple of times a week, so meals are grab-and-go. This keeps me consistent even on the busiest days. I add these items to salads, egg scrambles or bowls with a base of rice or potatoes.” • Planning and Prep “Eating at home is always healthier and, let’s be honest, less expensive than eating out at restaurants or going through the drive-thru. A little bit of planning and prep goes a long way and will ensure you are in control of how you fuel your body,” Bellinger says. “When I do go out to eat, I set realistic expectations that it won’t be perfect. I focus on dishes with protein and fiber to keep me full. Most restaurants are accommodating when it comes to special requests: Ask to have your protein grilled instead of fried, for example. Most importantly, enjoy time with family and friends.” • Pack and Go “Be prepared on the go by having healthy snacks prepped and ready. I always aim for a balance of protein or healthy fat paired with fiber to keep me energized,” Bellinger says. “A great option is hard-boiled eggs because they are high in protein and perfect with cucumber slices. I also love tuna paired with seed crackers when I want something crunchy. For quick and portable, apples and berries are amazing high-fiber options that require zero prep. Add a handful of nuts or a spoonful of nut butter for the perfect combo of healthy fat and fiber for steady energy.”

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.
Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.
