Happy New Year!
January 2024 PUBLISHER
Joe Geagea | joe.geagea@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R I AL C O O R D I N ATO R
Amy Niezur | amy.niezur@citylifestyle.com
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectations that this year will be different. We approached this issue from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. This month, we bring you inspiring ideas to enhance your physical well-being— both through personalized training and an opportunity for the girls in your life to discover both fitness and friendship through Girls on the Run, which recently started a program at Roosevelt Elementary. Looking for healthful and delicious foods? We’ve got you covered there as well, from unique products sourced in Lebanon to creative recipes for smoothie bowls. When it comes to anything in life—business, finance, food, home, and personal health—it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle, it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! So go ahead and enjoy the things you love, while finding ways to make the changes bit-by-bit that will improve how you feel overall. You’ll thank yourself! Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

DON’T HIBERNATE THIS WINTER
Healthy Moves
for Seniors ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI
10
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS
As we age, the likelihood of falling and sustaining injuries from those falls increase dramatically. However, seniors are staying active longer, which is a great thing, but it’s important to perform activities safely. “Winter is a particular important time for people to be aware that slip and falls can jolt the pelvis and cause sacroiliitis, or SI for short,” says Dr. Brian Fiani, a board-certified neurosurgeon with IvyLeague Fellowship training in minimally-invasive and complex spinal surgery. “But, don’t let winter keep you from moving. We want people to stay active and stay fit all year round.” Being too sedentary can decrease spinal health by weakening bones, he explains. “The more you do can really help strengthen the spine, decrease inflammation of the body, and help you stay healthy and functional.” Dr. Fiani recommends getting out and enjoying the fresh air while walking on well-manicured sidewalks, but if there’s a lot of snow and ice on the ground, walk in malls and other indoor spaces instead. When outside, walk with others so if you do fall, there’s someone there to help you. “If you lose your balance and fall on your butt, it can cause compression of your bones, or you can have fractures of the lumbar spine or even worse, up in the neck that might need surgical intervention,” he says. Hitting your head can also result in a brain injury. CONTINUED >

It’s critical to avoid walking on ice, but if you can’t, he has some advice. “Have a slow, wide-based walking pattern.” And wear appropriate footwear. Many seniors today are participating in weightlifting and other load-bearing activities that make their bones stronger and healthier. “They should do whatever exercises they can handle to keep their bones healthy,” says Dr. Fiani. “I went to Detroit Country Day School here in Michigan and our motto was, in Latin, mens sana in corpore sano, which means a strong mind in a strong body. It’s important for people’s minds, bodies, and souls to stay active, especially during the wintertime. People should not hibernate.” In addition to falls, many spine issues arise from sitting too long, or at the opposite end of the spectrum, working very hard with your hands and being on your feet for hours at a time. If you find yourself sitting too much, be sure to get up and walk around regularly. If you have to stand a lot, do the opposite. Take breaks to sit and rest your body.

Dr. Fiani, who offers surgical and non-surgical interventions, was attracted to the medical field because he wanted to help others. “That was the most important factor in making me want to pursue not just the field, but particularly neurosurgery,” he says. “Neurosurgery is this specialty that allows me to make the biggest impact on other people’s lives, because there is nothing more special than the brain, and the spine is what’s important for one’s functionality on a day-to-day basis. It really allows me to help others to not only live their lives, but to live them happily.” He joined Mendelsohn Kornblum in Troy in 2023. “I was looking broadly across the entire country at the opportunities that were presented to me and who was recruiting me when I was in both California and New York City,” says Dr. Fiani. “And I was really astounded and amazed at this opportunity in particular because of its capability of providing patients with a comprehensive spine center. There are very few in the country that have all the capabilities and specialists that one would need for their spine health and wellness. “That includes everything from a neurosurgeon like me, as well as orthopedic spine surgeons and pain management providers, who are able to provide our patients with non-operative modalities to help their pain.” The practice even offers MRIs and physical therapy. What also attracted him to the practice was its location. “I originally grew up in Southeast Michigan and so, for me, it was a very special opportunity to take all of my education, training, strengths and experience that I have from over the past decade and bring those home to the great people of Michigan.” His parents and an older brother still live in southeast Michigan. To learn more, go to MendelsonOrtho.com or call 1-877-BADBACK.

GI RLS ON TH E RU N I N WE ST BLOOM FIE LD How to Volunteer, Support, or Join in the Fun This Spring
“Everything got started with a parent,” says Kate Lynch, Council Director of Girls on the Run/STRIDE of Greater Detroit. The parent was interested in bringing Girls on the Run, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building both life skills and physical fitness in girls, to Roosevelt Elementary in West Bloomfield. “She spoke with some teachers at the school who were also interested,” continues Kate, “and we had great support from the administration to get the program started. Parents and teachers volunteered to coach. The team had 25 girls in their first season last spring, and we had a team of 22 girls this fall. That is very impressive participation for a brand-new team!” Girls on the Run started in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1996, and spread to the Detroit area in 2009 with the partnership of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. Since then, says Kate, “we have served tens of thousands of girls in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. We are considered among the largest Girls on the Run councils in the United States. We are proud to say that over 2000 girls have participated in
our programs this year, and we are excited to announce that we will be unveiling a new, enhanced curriculum for our Girls on the Run teams in 2024!” Girls on the Run programs are offered for 3rd to 5th graders, and the Heart and Sole program continues the experience through the middle school years. Both programs use a research-based curriculum and a coach training program to bring positive results. According to their website, “an independent study showed that Girls on the Run participants were significantly more likely than girls in organized sports to learn and use life skills such as managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others, and making intentional decisions.” Locally, you can help by volunteering as a coach, or to help with the end-of-season 5K celebration, says Kate. For the girls, registration for the Spring season is underway and the season begins in March. “If you don’t see a team at your daughter’s school, we can help you get one started!” For more information on starting a team or volunteering, visit gotrdetroit.org.

Natural Gourmet Foods and Health and Beauty Products From Lebanon
ARTICLE BY AMY NIEZUR PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE EARTHEN HOLLOW

EAT R IGH T | FO O D + BEVE RAGE
We recently had the opportunity to chat with 23-year-old Wael Sabeh of The Earthen Hollow, an online retail store focusing on natural and organic gourmet food items and health and beauty products sourced in his native Lebanon. Wael, a self-professed “food guy”, loves cooking, horseback riding, and products that promote natural wellness. A psychology student at the University of Michigan, Wael started his business to share the best of Lebanon with the United States and to “bring a part of home with me.” Partnering with his cousin, Wael aims to help the local farmers and people of Lebanon by offering their products for sale in the United States, and of course, use them himself. “If a product isn’t something I would have at my own home, I won’t carry it at the shop.” Here, Wael shares some of their popular products and what The Earthen Hollow can offer for a fresh healthy start this new year.
WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE PRODUCTS YOU SELL?
Starting with the skincare, which all have a base of olive oil, we carry a scent which is pure jasmine scent. This is Lebanese jasmine, which is a very different scent than the jasmine found here in the US. Of course, the skincare doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals, and the brand follows the Sephora clean beauty list requirements. Another unique item is the Award-Winning Extra Virgin Olive Oil named Darmmess. Commonly referred to as the “Bordeaux of Olive Oils”, this ultimate fan favorite comes directly from Deir Mimas, Southern Lebanon, where millennial olive trees are up to 2000 years old. The early harvest gives a taste of bitterness and green fruitiness—indeed a
great example of the Lebanese agriculture potential. Just recently, it won the 2023 Gold Award at the World Olive Oil Competition in New York City, the world’s largest and most prestigious olive oil quality contest. Every bottle carries a lot number showing the farmer’s initials through which they can trace from tree to retailer shelf. The Honey Jams from Lebanese brand L’Atelier du Miel are made with fruits and honey without any addition of sugar. We carry the Mulberry, Fig, Raspberry, and Strawberry Honey jams. All of them are quite popular and have phenomenal taste. Also, we carry two types of honey from L’Atelier, both from different flowers. The Oak Honey is rich in iron and helps with anemia. The Eucalyptus is very good for allergies and calms one’s throat due to the eucalyptus flower benefits. The Zaatar mixes we carry are also unique. We carry zaatar from a brand named The Good Thymes, which are the best people in the business in my opinion when it comes to zaatar. They are all-natural with no additives whatsoever. In addition to your classic mix of zaatar, we carry one that is spicy (N0 4), one that has some nuts in it (N0 2), and one that contains flax seeds, chia seeds, and goji berries (N0 3). In addition to the regular zaatar, those mixes are also great and taste amazing.
WHICH PRODUCT IS YOUR FAVORITE, AND WHY?
To choose one is quite hard, so maybe I would say my top two food-wise are the Darmmess Extra Virgin Olive Oil and the Fig Honey Jam. However, skincare-wise, my favorite product would be anything in the jasmine scent as it reminds me of Lebanon, of home. Find out more at theearthenhollow.com.

TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH DIET AND EXERCISE ARTICLE BY AMY NIEZUR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY GILLESPIE

Fitness Society offers a results guarantee. Steve Nelson, a personal trainer and the force behind Fitness Society, believes in helping people transform their lives through changing their diet and helping them “fall in love” with exercise. “After seeing firsthand how my own mom transformed not just physically, but mentally, I knew I wanted to make my career out of helping people achieve their health and fitness goals. When I had the chance to open my own gym, I seized the opportunity so I could help as many people as possible.” The result was Fitness Society, where Steve works with clients to help them achieve their goals—whether it be weight loss, fat loss, strength, toning, endurance, or just general fitness. “If we can’t help you hit your goals,” says Steve, “we will happily refund your money—Fitness Society offers a results guarantee.”
Steve is a Certified Personal Trainer from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and has been working in the field for eight years. In that time, he notes, he has helped hundreds of people reach their health and fitness goals. “My favorite success stories involve helping people reverse their diabetes,” notes Steve. “To date, I’ve helped over 30 people fully reverse their type 2 diabetes. This means a lot to me as my own mother had type 2 diabetes, and I saw firsthand how diet and exercise can change someone, not just physically, but mentally. My mom is now diabetes-free and looks better at 60 than she did at 40!” “Everyone here is on a mission to become the best version of themselves,” says Steve. For more information on how to become the best version of yourself, visit fitnesssociety.net.

Selling Your Home Part 2 PRICING AND STAGING FOR A QUICK SALE
Excellent job! Your house is looking good, with the landscaping trimmed and weeded. But what next? Now it is time to price your home. There are three ways to arrive at a price—a professional appraisal, using the home’s assessed value, and with the assistance of your real estate agent. A professional appraisal will require costs on your part. Using the home’s assessed value may not reflect the actual value in the current market. That leaves real estate appraisal, or property valuation. Better known as CMA, or comparative market analysis, this method involves your real estate agent pulling information on similar houses in your area with listings that are active, expired, or sold. Expired listings provide useful data as these homes were on the market but did not sell—either because they were priced too high, the condition of the home was undesirable, or the timing of the market was just not right. Once you’ve arrived at a price, the next step is to make your home as appealing as possible for buyers. Staging is easier to accomplish in a vacant home, but either way, remember less is more. Keep the living room looking spacious with little on the tables, one, maybe two lamps, and a chair or two. Fresh flowers smell good and look nice. Keep kitchen counters clear with appliances shining and clean. In the bedrooms, remove all clutter and reduce the amount of furniture to make rooms appear larger.
