We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. While it can make us feel organized and on top of things, it can be a trap too—the trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which you can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost. But the truth is, that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered, and trust to be built. So set aside those “have-tos” and “shoulds” for a bit and try something new. It doesn’t have to be big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail, or going out to find a fun cookie place you've never been to before in a different part of town. Or perhaps you will take some of the suggestions in this issue—we have a couple of fresh new recipes to liven up your family meals, some inspiration for exploring what it can mean to help others, and even some wilder suggestions for making a bucket-list dream come true. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To plan that trip you’ve been thinking about. But most of all, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. Happy exploring, and happy April! Patrice Henderson loves trying new things. “I’m kind of a daredevil,” she admits. “I’ve been skydiving, hiking, rock climbing, jumping off cliffs and riding roller coasters.” Her willingness to take a chance led her to investing in real estate back in 2015. However, “flipping homes was a lot more than I could handle at the time.” Patrice then made the move toward becoming a realtor. Now an award-winning Principal Associate Broker at Designed Living Real Estate, Patrice was featured in Top Agent Magazine in 2022 and will be featured in Real Producers of Oakland County Magazine this year. When Molly Reeser was a sophomore at Michigan State University, she had an experience that would go on to change her life. “I started working on a horse farm to earn extra spending money. It was there that I met a young girl—about 10 years old at the time—named Casey,” says Molly. Casey had cancer, and Molly had never known a child with cancer before. “She reminded me a lot of myself when I was her age—animal-obsessed, outgoing, and sarcastic,” says Molly. “We became quick friends.” Sadly, about a year and a half later, Casey passed away. Molly was inspired, along with several others who worked on the farm, to find a way to honor her memory. Ideas such as planting a tree or building a park bench were rejected,
says Molly, because “it was important to me that Casey’s life was honored in a way that represented the person she was.” Molly knew Casey had deeply enjoyed being around the horses, and that she would have wanted other children to experience this joy as well. “I approached the owners of the barn to see if they’d allow me to take over the facility for one day.” Molly organized what was meant to be a one-time event at the barn, called “Camp Casey.” “I put up flyers at the local hospital where Casey had received treatment, and invited 20 children and their families to come to the barn for a day of horseback riding and kids’ activities.” With the help of her friends and $200 worth of pizza and craft supplies on the credit card her parents had given her for emergencies, the day was a big success. About a week later, Molly received a letter from a 4-year-old attendee. “Thank you for the best day of my life,” it read. From that moment, Molly knew that Camp Casey would need to continue. Molly held Camp Casey monthly for the next two years, and after graduating, dedicated herself to growing it further. 18 years later, Camp Casey is still bringing the joy of horses to children with cancer, sickle cell disease, and other life-threatening illnesses. Camp Casey reaches over 1600 people every year with programs at no cost to participants such as Horsey House Calls, which surprise sick children with a horse visit at home, and Cowboy Camp Outs, Outlaw CONTINUED >

Outings, and Lone Star Getaways, which range from dude ranch trips to stays at privately-owned rental properties. Molly cherishes the memories she has made through Camp Casey. “When our Horsey House Call program was just getting started,” says Molly, one girl, age 14, bonded with therapy horse Moe on weekly rides. “As her health declined, we knew we had to bring Moe to her home to say goodbye. When she opened the door, she immediately burst into tears.” Although she was too weak to ride, she spent a special afternoon with the horse. Adds Molly, “It was a day I’ll never forget, as long as I live.”

It repels rain while allowing water vapor to escape. It reflects the rays of the sun, keeping your home cooler. It even contains a proprietary additive to prevent mold, mildew, and algae. What could it be? Marc Mercier, owner of Rhino Shield of Michigan, says all this and more can be found in Rhino Shield ceramic coating, a novel product for home exteriors. Marc, who started his Rhino Shield business in 2008 from his garage with his wife Sheryl, explains that Rhino Shield
is not paint. It is a ceramic coating approximately 10 times thicker than ordinary exterior paint. The company behind the Rhino Shield product has been around for decades, but the coating became what it is today after a reformulation in 1998 for an episode of This Old House, using unique ceramics from 3M and high-grade resins from Dupont. Usually costing halfway between a professional paint job and new vinyl siding, Marc prides himself on their thorough preparation and application process, which is backed up by a 25-year warranty against cracking, chipping, or peeling. Marc’s team begins by making a careful inspection of the home, noting areas of damaged wood or other repairs to be made before applying Rhino Shield. Next, the home is carefully pressure washed, scraped, and caulked. The primer and finish coat are applied, followed by a final check and touch up. “People

Adventure doesn’t have to mean checking off your bucket list items! You can explore right at home by creating fresh new meals you haven’t tried before. Dig out that cookbook you bought but never used, try baking something challenging, or sample Lauren Lane’s suggestions for a fresh meal that celebrates all we love about spring. Bruschetta may be a familiar dish, but strawberries and goat or mascarpone cheese add a new twist. Paired with a fresh vegetable quiche, you have a meal that brings out the best of the season.
Spring Quiche I N G R E D IE N T S • 1 pie dough • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cups mixed vegetables, such as raw spinach, cooked broccoli, or asparagus • 7 large eggs, lightly beaten • 1 1/4 cups light cream • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs, such as parsley or thyme • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon fresh cracked pepper • 3/4 cup grated gruyere or white cheddar cheese • 1/4 cup grated ParmigianoReggiano cheese
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Transfer dough to a 9-inch pie plate and crimp edges. 3. Cover crust with parchment paper and fill with dried beans or rice to weigh down crust.

Sprinkle half of the cheeses into the crust, followed by the vegetables. Add remaining cheeses. 6. Pour egg mixture over the top and bake until set, about 35 minutes.
Strawberry Bruschetta INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •
1 pound strawberries, washed and sliced 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon olive oil Kosher salt 1 loaf Italian or French bread, cut into 12 slices 1 cup goat or mascarpone cheese, room temperature 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, basil, or mint leaves Balsamic vinegar or glaze Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS 1. Combine strawberries and sugar in a bowl and set aside. 2. Brush bread with olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt. 3. Preheat broiler. Place bread on a baking sheet. Broil a few inches from heat for 1 minute, then flip slices and broil opposite sides until golden brown. 4. Spread cheese on toasted bread. 5. Season strawberry mixture with salt, pepper, and herbs.
