LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Comforts of Home Home. So much contained in that little four-letter word. Home is our grounding. Our base. Our launchpad. It’s where we start and end each day. And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Author Wendy Wunder said, “The magic thing about home is that it feels good to leave, and it feels even better to come back.” As we thought about home, we wanted to highlight what makes it special to our readers. That of course includes the aesthetic and design, but most importantly— the people. This month we bring you some inspiration for making your home the place of your dreams. We feature a local designer making custom kitchens, an exciting way to enhance concrete floors, and more. In addition, we share how a local gallery can add an artistic touch to your home while helping to bring hope to children in need. We also have a selection of local spots to find creative touches for your home and garden. Every month, we hear from readers who keep this magazine for longer than just the month labeled on the cover. They say they hold onto it for months as coffee table art or an accessory in their home. We feel proud to create a resource that is valued in our community and strive every month to deliver the value you expect. Thanks for letting us be a part of your home. Happy March! ARTICLE BY AMY NIEZUR
“I wear many hats,” says Kate England, owner, along with her husband Ryan, of J.R. England, a local business specializing in high-quality gutter guards and gutter systems. Kate continues, “J.R. England is run by only my husband and myself (J.R. stands for Joel Ryan, Ryan’s full name).” On any given day, Kate is busy answering calls, doing estimates, ordering materials, and scheduling, while Ryan and his small team are in the field, completing jobs. “My husband is more introverted than me,” laughs Kate, “so mostly I am the one the customers remember. I always try to do a follow-up call when jobs are done and make sure the customers are happy.”
Marty Byrd
14 H OU SE CA LL | HOM E + DE S I GN
Happy customers are a priority for Kate. “I let customers know they can reach me by phone call, text, or email if they have any concerns. We take service calls very seriously.” To ensure timely, quality work, Kate ensures that Ryan’s focus can be on the job site. “We never subcontract jobs out,” says Kate. “We figure no one can do a better job than the owner himself. It’s our reputation on the line—our name is literally on the company.” At home, Kate and Ryan spend time with their three boys at their home in Clarkston. Their oldest son, Michael, has started going on jobs with his dad to begin to learn the trade. The younger boys, Damian and Hunter, tag along with mom to do estimates from time to time. “Hunter asks lots of questions on how I calculate the price!” says Kate. Rounding out the family are a menagerie of pets—dogs, cats, a bearded dragon, and mascot Marty Byrd, a dove rescued from a gutter being torn down.
Kate and Ryan offer gutter guards including GutterGlove, GutterGlove Pro, and Leaf Blaster Pro. “GutterGlove Pro is our most premium option,” says Kate. Both GutterGlove products offer a 40-year warranty and are made of stainless steel with a 30-micron mesh screen. The guards feature a raised pattern to allow better airflow and to lift leaves and debris away. A high-quality gutter guard system can save a lot of work, time, and money, as failure to maintain gutters can cause leaks, fascia rot, and damage to the house. Kate adds that J.R. England performs either a tune up and cleaning for existing gutters or installs new ones before adding the gutter guards, and that she and Ryan stand behind the work they do. “We really care about our business and our customers.” To schedule a free estimate, visit jrengland.com.

A Woman's Place is on the Job Site WENDY CLEMENTS OF ACCURATE CABINETRY REFLECTS ON A LIFE IN THE INDUSTRY

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HOME + DE S I GN
The legacy of Accurate Cabinetry started over 50 years ago with a passion for beautiful woodworking, fine cabinetry, and the satisfaction of helping others realize their renovation dreams for their home. With the love of family, it’s my mission to carry on that tradition of excellence and be a leading example to others as a woman in the industry, and a proud owner of my business.
From a young age, I was always on a job site and out in nature, getting into trouble for using my dad’s tools, nails, and leftover lumber to build my own oasis and letting my imagination go wild. Now, I get to do it for a living. With our family being in the business of designing and remodeling homes from the ground up, it’s no surprise that I ended up on the design side. Of the many aspects of what we do every day in the design world, I relish creativity, the people I meet, and the sense of accomplishment I get when clients call it a job well done. Designing kitchens is an incredible challenge and as a married mother of four, I love a challenge! If homeschooling my kids taught me anything, it’s to trust the process when refining your plans. We bring your ideas to life by making your dream kitchen a reality through our state-of-the-art 3D design programs.
With the help of our designers, we transform your space and the way you use it. We also specialize in designing bathrooms, heavenly closet spaces, mudrooms, bars, and vanities. We offer custom cabinetry with a tremendous selection of countertops and the best hardware. By putting your remodel in the hands of an experienced designer, you get numerous advantages over buying from a big box store. Not only are you supporting a small business in your local community, but you get personalized one-on-one attention. At Accurate Cabinetry, we take pride in guiding and supporting your project from start to finish with a strong commitment to design excellence and ongoing service while attending to every detail. A dream kitchen (or other space) does not have to be a dream, when together we can make it a reality. CONTINUED >

MARC MERCIER SHARES HOW TRUTECH CAN HELP YOUR CONCRETE FLOORS SHINE

H OW TO | HOM E SERVICES
Tr uTe c h Marc Mercier knows what it means to start small. “I started my company in May of 2008, in my garage,” he says, with his wife Sheryl as his partner. He added epoxy garage floors to his business in 2011, and by 2019 they had spun off a separate business, TruTech Concrete Coatings, focusing on a unique concrete coating made from a 100% solid polyuria and polyaspartic material. Unlike traditional epoxy coatings, polyurea better withstands abrasions, temperature changes, and heavy use, says Marc. “The product we use is very flexible. Over time, epoxy continues to cure and gets more brittle.” Additionally, TruTech’s coatings are slip-resistant, antimicrobial, non-porous, and easy to clean. TruTech’s concrete coatings can also be stylish, notes Marc. “We can match any color scheme, or even embed a logo in the floor.” Customers choose to coat garage floors most often, says Marc, but polyurea can be applied to any concrete floor. Basements, pool decks, and weight rooms are among the possibilities. “In a weight room, you can literally drop a barbell on it, it is that strong,” he adds. Most jobs can be completed in one day, instead of the 3-5 days typical of epoxy coatings. “We spend a lot of time on prepping, actually grinding the surface of the concrete instead of just a wash. We fill cracks, and then apply the base coat. Vinyl paint chips in the desired colors are sprinkled on top, and later a clear top coat is added to finish the job," says Marc. Marc has worked in home improvement his entire career, and that has rubbed off on his sons, two of whom worked with him. He also prides himself on creating a great team at TruTech. “We’ve found great success putting great people around us,” he notes, “and we love helping people get that curb appeal.”

THE SECRET ART OF DR. SEUSS Art Leaders Gallery Hosts Exhibit and Raises Funds for CARE House of Oakland County
Generations of readers have enjoyed the artwork of Dr. Seuss through his fanciful children’s books. However, not many are familiar with his Secret Art Collection. Virtually unknown to the general public, Dr. Seuss’ Secret Art Collection offers a glimpse into the mind-expanding drawings, paintings, and sculptures that Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, created at night for his own personal pleasure. He did not sell them during his lifetime, as he felt his career was in children’s books.
Dr. Seuss’ Secret Art Collection includes such unusual creations as his three-dimensional Unorthodox Taxidermy sculptures, with equally unusual names such as Carbonic Walrus, Two-Horned Drouberhannis, and Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast. Drawings and paintings include Martini Bird, Cat From the Wrong Side of the Tracks, Yawning Cat, and more. At Art Leaders Gallery in West Bloomfield, visitors during the month of March can view and acquire Estate-Authorized limited-edition artwork which have been adapted and reproduced from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original drawings, paintings, and sculptures as part of their Art of Dr. Seuss Rare Editions exhibition. To identify each work as an authorized limited edition by the Dr. Seuss Estate, each piece bears a posthumously printed or engraved Dr. Seuss signature. Works from Dr. Seuss’ beloved children’s books will be available as well. For those wishing to delve deeper, Art Leaders Gallery will host a free reception and Secret Art Q&A on Saturday, March 25 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Throughout the month of March, Art Leaders Gallery will also be supporting CARE House of Oakland County by selling tickets for a chance to win a Dr. Seuss framed limited-edition illustration. ARTICLE BY AMY NIEZUR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DR. SEUSS ENTERPRISES LP

In conjunction with the Art of Dr. Seuss Rare Editions exhibition, throughout the month of March, Art Leaders Gallery will also be supporting CARE House of Oakland County by selling tickets for a chance to win a Dr. Seuss framed limited-edition illustration. All proceeds from the drawing will benefit the work of CARE House. CARE House of Oakland County was established in 1977 to take a proactive approach to addressing the issues of child abuse and neglect. It began with the collaboration of law enforcement agencies, child protective services, the Junior League of Birmingham, and others, and continues its work in the spirit of community collaboration to this day. Programs offered by CARE House include providing court-appointed special advocates for children—community volunteers who work with and advocate for children in the foster care system. In 2020, 76 children in Oakland County benefitted from the help of a special advocate. In addition to human advocates, CARE House also offers canine advocates trained by Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester. These dogs provide support to children testifying in court. Beyond advocates, CARE House also offers programs in child abuse prevention, parenting support, intervention, and treatment.

5 Hot Trends
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY J.A. STENGER PHOTOGRAPHY
in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.
When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.
TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.
HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES
Brooke’s Pro Tip:
Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.
I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.
BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.
C O N T R A S T, C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.
