LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year!
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Joe Geagea | joe.geagea@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Amy Niezur | amy.niezur@citylifestyle.com
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectations that this year will be different. We approached this issue from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, longterm improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. When it comes to anything in life, whether it is business, finance, food, home, or personal health, it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle, it’s what you do MOST days—for better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times per year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the “sometimes” choices we make, it’s the “most of the time” choices. So plan the vacation AND try to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Bar Verona or Prime29. It’s not what you do some days, it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling, and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you. EAT R IGH T | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
The new year is here, and thoughts of improving your diet and getting into shape once again come into view. The effort, however, can feel daunting! Justin Hiller, former VP of Hiller’s Markets and previous Stewardship Administrator of Gleaner’s Community Food Bank, has something that can help. His fast-casual restaurant combines the Saladworks and Frutta Bowls franchises in one convenient location. Located at the Crosswinds Center in West Bloomfield, Justin offers a variety of quick, delicious options. “I’m excited to be able to offer fresh, healthy food to this community again,” says Justin. “The food service industry has played an integral role in my life and I have a passion for the retail food space.” Whether you are vegetarian or vegan, or prefer a Whole 30, Paleo, or Keto diet, Saladworks has developed menu items
to suit your fancy. Saladworks offers a selection of 12 chef-created signature salads, or guests can build their own using a base of green, grains, or both. A choice of 65+ fresh, flavorful ingredients allows for nearly unlimited customization. “Our ‘build your own’ salads are the most popular by far,” says Justin. “There are so many amazing options to choose from.” Salads can also be made into a wrap, if desired. Beyond salads, Saladworks offers a line of signature sandwiches, panini melts, soups, and a kid’s menu. The Frutta Bowls menu offers similar customization. Packed with vitamin-rich superfoods that are high in antioxidants, Frutta Bowls start with a base such as Greek yogurt or acai, and add granola, various fruit options, and toppings such as almond butter or chia seeds. Like Saladworks,
Frutta Bowls also offers a selection of signature bowls. Rounding out the menu are protein bites and smoothies. “It’s a healthy superfood smoothie base,” notes Justin. “I like what it brings to breakfast, lunch, a snack, or a meal replacement.” Justin’s passion for a healthy lifestyle extends to his own life as well. Justin is an avid cyclist and runner, and he and his wife, Laurie Hughet-Hiller, “love to take our kids on family runs in the double stroller.” After opening the first co-branded Saladworks and Frutta Bowls in the nation, Justin hopes to build on what he has started by opening additional locations across Michigan. “As someone who is committed to eating healthy and living an active lifestyle, the opportunity to offer the community two health-conscious dining options is extremely exciting and humbling.” CONTINUED >

MOLLY MACDONALD BRINGS HELP AND HOPE TO BREAST CANCER PATIENTS
G IV IN G BAC K | WEL L NESS
“Remember what Henry Ford said, ‘Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.’ I thought I could and I did,” says Molly MacDonald, Founder and CEO of Pink Fund, a nonprofit breast cancer charity headquartered in Bloomfield Hills. Unlike many organizations focused on breast cancer, Pink Fund does not raise money for research. “We also are not a mental and emotional support organization, although patients tell us just how much our financial support provides relief and hope,” notes Molly. Instead, Pink Fund aims to support breast cancer patients by easing the financial burdens that unfortunately accompany a diagnosis all too often. Pink Fund provides 90 to 180 days of non-medical financial assistance by making payments to a patient’s creditors for housing, transportation, utilities, and insurance, and to date has provided over $6.5 million in assistance. Considering that 50 percent of bankruptcies are the result of illness or illness-related job loss, this help can be life-changing.
Molly was inspired to start Pink Fund from her own experience with breast cancer. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring of 2005 at a time of job transition. I did not feel I could ethically begin the new job as planned without informing my new employers of my diagnosis. We all agreed it was not the best time to start a new job.” Unfortunately, this meant that Molly was unemployed, and unemployable, during the six months of treatment she needed for her cancer. “While my early-stage disease was unlikely to take my life,” says Molly, “it did take my livelihood.” Molly found herself without her income and with the addition of $1300 per month in COBRA insurance premiums. “Our family experienced what in 2013 was coined ‘financial toxicity’, a devastating side effect of cancer treatment where patients are forced to make impossible choices between things like paying the mortgage or paying for the medicine. Our home was threatened with foreclosure and the leaseholder on my automobile was calling every 58 days to ask if I was planning to make a payment or should they plan to repossess my vehicle. By August I was at risk for utility shut-offs and by September, when treatment was finished and friends stopped delivering dinner, I was forced to use a local food bank to help feed my family.” In addition to her own experience, while in treatment Molly met other working women with much more advanced and aggressive diseases who were facing long-term toxic treatments. “Aside from the side effects which made working impossible,” says Molly, “they were at risk for losing their jobs altogether as their FMLA benefits were not going to outlast their treatment protocol.” Molly heard these women express
Molly MacDonald, Founder and CEO of Pink Fund
thoughts of stopping treatment and returning to work to improve their financial situations, which would put them at risk for earlier mortality. “It was then that I asked my social worker about help for women like me and them. There was nothing of real significance to help,” adds Molly. “My quest to get help for myself became one to give help to others.” From this, Pink Fund was born. “My husband and I bootstrapped this organization into existence in 2006; in 2012 Ford Motor Company through Warriors in Pink took it as national. It all takes vision, patience, and timing.” Want to get involved? Here’s how to help. • Volunteer at Pink Fund’s monthly committee meetings or help to process files. Email grants@ thepinkfund.org for more information. • Raise money in your community through your place of business, school, or sports teams. • Get involved with Pink Fund’s annual fundraiser, Dancing for the Survivors, which was held in Detroit in October. • Host a dinner in your home or another small fundraising event. For more information, visit pinkfund.org.

New Year, New Look: Treat Your Gummy Smile with Crown Lengthening
Cosmetic crown lengthening improves a “gummy smile” by recontouring uneven gingival margins. Some may think their teeth are naturally small, but they are actually the proper size! They only appear shorter because excess gum tissue covers them. At Nemeth and Katranji Periodontics, we can improve your gummy smile by removing the excess tissue to expose more of the tooth structure.
Come and see what we can do for you!

Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. A meatless diet has been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals, and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.
You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant-eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian, which means you occasionally eat meat, but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat, but you can still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan, who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake— it is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet! TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether. 2. A plant-based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes, including ethnic meals that are meat-free and delicious. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant, including the stems and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets, and carrots, and use the stems from spinach.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE UP MEAT ENTIRELY...DO WHAT IS COMFORTABLE FOR YOU SO YOU WILL STICK WITH IT. 24
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. 5. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take B12 and possibly iron supplements. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Claudia Martin-Ayoade, is a Registered Dietitian, Writer and Public Speaker who is passionate about educating people on nutrition and addressing food insecurity.

LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.
BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.
MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.
SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops to provide practical footwear.

BEST FOOT FORWARD Yes, the weather outside is frightful, but the new year often inspires fresh starts and new beginnings. Whether you are a fitness fanatic or wishing to be, here’s our best tips for motivating yourself to get going on those resolutions.

Feeling in a rut? Rev up your fitness routine with something new. Beyond the typical “joining a gym”, new classes or activities can motivate and inspire you to get into shape or revive a lagging attitude. Aerial classes, dance, pilates, yoga, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), or martial arts could be the spark to get you going. Locally, check out Orangetheory in Farmington Hills, Yoga Six in West Bloomfield, or Warrior Way in Walled Lake.
Sometimes the element that is missing between your intentions and your actions is feeling good. Treat yourself to new workout apparel, shoes, or curate a fresh playlist that really gets you moving. Wearable fitness devices can provide the feedback you need to push yourself to the next level, or help you coordinate your healthy eating and workout goals. Stop by Gazelle Sports in Birmingham, Fleet Feet in West Bloomfield, or Athleta in Troy for what you need.
Just because it’s winter in Michigan, that doesn’t mean you need to keep your workouts indoors. Fresh air and sunlight do wonders for your mood and are a great antidote for feeling cooped up on gray, snowy days. Remember—it’s just a matter of wearing the right clothing! Get out for a walk, snowshoe through the park, or invest in a fat tire bike and laugh at the weather. Visit Marshbank Park, West Bloomfield Trail, or Kensington Metro Park in Milford for winter fitness fun.
