In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us who have helped us along in our journey can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. In our November issue, we bring you some ideas for making the holiday special—from recipes to share with friends and family to Turkey Trot races that bring the family together to do something healthy while supporting local nonprofits. One includes a canned food drive, so you can tangibly give back while creating fun family memories, while another supports the work of the Michigan Humane Society and the care of the horses at the Detroit Mounted Police Division. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make West Bloomfield the vibrant community that it is. The holiday season is upon us, and for many that means entertaining friends and family. This month, we celebrate with a selection of fresh, original mocktails to satisfy your guests who choose not to imbibe, featuring an array of fresh herbs and spices to set a festive mood—from rosemary and thyme to nutmeg. Not in the mood for mocktails? We have included some suggestions for ways to “spike things up” if you prefer.

Rosemary Pear Mocktail
ingredients: • • • • • •
1 cup cane sugar 1 cup water 3 sprigs fresh rosemary 5 tablespoons pear juice 1 teaspoon lemon or lime juice Sparkling water (to taste)
directions: To make rosemary simple syrup, combine sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and add rosemary to steep. Allow to cool completely. Remove rosemary. In a glass, add ice. Add pear juice, lemon or lime juice, 1 tablespoon rosemary simple syrup, and sparkling water. If desired, garnish with a sprig of rosemary and pear. Spike it up! Add 2/3 ounce of pear liqueur to each glass.

Spiced Eggnog ingredients: • 3 cups milk (or a mix of milk and cream, as desired) • ½ cup cane sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg • Cinnamon (to taste)
directions: In a shaker, add milk, sugar, vanilla, and spices. Shake vigorously until well-blended and foamy. Pour into glasses. Garnish as desired. Spike it up! Add ½ ounce each of brandy and spiced rum to each glass.
Grapefruit Thyme Mocktail ingredients: • • • • •
1 cup cane sugar 1 cup water 1/3 cup fresh thyme ½ cup fresh red grapefruit juice Sparkling water (to taste)
directions: To make thyme simple syrup, combine sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and add thyme to steep. Allow to cool completely. Remove thyme. Rim glass with sugar if desired. Fill glass with ice. Add 3 tablespoons thyme simple syrup, ½ cup grapefruit juice, and sparkling water. If desired, garnish with fresh thyme. Spike it up! Add 1 ounce of vodka to each glass.

The Traditional Table For this classic, traditional look, a plaid throw blanket stands in for a tablecloth to establish a festive base layer. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display.
The Fall Garden Party Table Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Fairmont Senior Living, an assisted living and memory care facility in Farmington Hills, is thankful and excited to announce a complete renovation of the community that is nearing completion, says Oren Jackson of Fairmont Senior Living. “It includes all-new paint in the common areas and corridors, new flooring and furnishings, and a 12-seat movie theatre and game room.” Daily activities have been enhanced by the recent upgrades. “We are adding a wider scope of different activities for our residents, including more outside of our community,” says Oren.

Three meals plus snacks are provided each day, and the meal service is also part of the changes at Fairmont Senior Living. Notes Oren, “Our dining experience has been upgraded and improved to include more varieties of meals and desserts.” The final addition that has the community excited is their new ED, Michele White, who has over 30 years of experience, says Oren. “She has already begun to add her own special touches. A holiday tradition in Detroit for 40 years, participants can choose distances ranging from 1 mile to 10K. A fun event where many of the participants dress in costume, the races are a great way to start off Thanksgiving Day right! Races begin at 7:30 AM on Thursday, November 23, followed by America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Race supports the Michigan Humane Society and the care of the horses at the Detroit Mounted Police Division.
Happening on Thanksgiving Day, The Mighty Gobbler in Troy at Lutheran Church of the Master offers a 1-mile run/walk and a 5K option, with races beginning at 8:30 AM. Make room for pie by getting out with the family and starting your holiday with some fresh air and exercise together, with finisher medals for all participants. The Mighty Gobbler offers an opportunity to give back by bringing donations of canned goods for Troy People Concerned.
Want to work off your holiday meal? Downtown Milford offers the Gobbler Gallop on Saturday, November 25, beginning at 8:00 AM. Races include a 1-mile and 4-mile option, or if you like, you can do both! The course offers a mix of downtown Milford streets and a section on the beautiful Milford Trail. Following the races is Milford’s annual Holiday Parade, with floats, bands, and even a visit from Santa Claus!
