One For the Guys

June 2022 PUBLISHER

Amy Niezur | amy.niezur@citylifestyle.com

An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contributions to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. We are also taking time to spotlight events and activities of interest to men in our community. Take a look and see what speaks to you! To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it. LOCAL ARTIST RODNEY DENNE GETS INSPIRED

“We paint because we have to.” These words, spoken by a co-worker years ago during a summer job at Harmony House in college, inspired Rodney Denne to pursue a career in art. The co-worker, Bob, was an artist himself, and Rodney describes him as “a great mentor.” As a child growing up in Clarkston, Rodney enjoyed drawing. His mother did ceramics, and creativity was part of his life. Later, Rodney joined the military in the U.S. Air Force, and during that time started drawing again. This time, he says, he became enamored of the “bohemian

Rodney Denne

ideology of being an artist.” From drawing, he bought his first canvases and started painting, an act which was initially surprising to his father, who wondered what he was doing. What he was doing led to a successful career as an artist. He sold his first painting at 26 years old, in only one day. Since then, he has continued this success, with his work currently represented at Art Leaders Gallery in West Bloomfield. His large scale, abstract contemporary paintings are highlighted at the gallery and are the focus of a book signing, artist talk and reception on May 21. Rodney’s work has been exhibited in fine art galleries and in private collections across the country and Europe, including Art Prize in Grand Rapids, the Kresge Foundation, and the Musee D’Art-Moderne in Paris. Rodney draws inspiration from studying other artists. He believes it is important to learn from others and from that, to develop your own ideas and style. “I am fascinated with other people’s art,” he says. Cy Twombly, Franz Klein, Bob Thompson, William de Kooning, and Mark Rothko have been particularly inspiring for him. Beyond painting, Rodney enjoys writing poetry and listening to jazz music. “I love jazz,“ he says. “It seems simple but it is truly complex.” Much like his artwork, there is more going on beneath the surface if you pay attention. What a person gets out of a piece of music, the written word, or art is really up the individual. “When you CONTINUED >

make a painting, it’s for the world. I want people to make it their own. I want them to find something new in it every day.” As for his own artwork, Rodney notes they take several forms. One group he refers to as “Exposed.” These feature layers of various hues on top of each other with abstract human forms and explore themes of mortality and immortality, the philosophic poet, and the muse. Inspired by the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, these paintings are bold, colorful, and give the viewer much to observe. “Contrast and Dialogue” are Rodney’s black and white paintings with limited color. These pieces are inspired by Willem de Kooning. With these pieces, Rodney explores shapes, scribbles and lines in a way that explores concepts of personality and emotion. Rodney notes that Jean-Michel Basquiat was once told, “Remember, your audience hasn’t even been born yet.” In Rodney’s case, it seems they have. Brandon McDaniel Shares his Martial Arts Journey

Martial arts can transform your life in three ways, says Brandon McDaniel, manager and instructor at Warrior Way Martial Arts in Walled Lake. “The physical part includes getting in shape and having the ability to defend oneself in a physical altercation. Secondly, practitioners benefit mentally. Our classes provide an opportunity for the students to check out of their daily routine and focus on themselves for an hour or two. Lastly is the social aspect of training. You will see the widest cross section of the population all on the same mat in pursuit of the goal of bettering themselves.” Brandon emphasizes the psychological benefits of training. “When you’re practicing the martial arts, it is hard to worry about the stressors in your life and for that brief training session, you get a mental break. Our students learn to deal with stress in a new way and how to be less reactive to things outside their control.” Warrior Way, founded in 1997 by owner Harvy Berman and his two partners, set Brandon on his path. "I have trained non-stop since 1999 and have had the good fortune of learning so much from Harvy. He is a great martial artist and has been a mentor to countless people.” Brandon first became interested in martial arts after watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship at age 17. Says Brandon, “Watching Royce Gracie showcase the

effectiveness of Gracie Jiu Jitsu in that event, I was inspired to learn his family’s art.” After some research, he landed at Warrior Way. Warrior Way specializes in in Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing. In Brandon’s opinion, these are the most practical martial arts for reality-based self-defense. Adds Bradon, “We are fortunate to have the most experienced instructors that know how to teach students who have a wide range of abilities.” For those curious about training in martial arts, Brandon offers this advice. “Make it part of your weekly routine. I believe that the reality-based martial arts that we teach here at Warrior Way will improve and enrich anyone’s life.” Brandon speaks from experience. “Martial arts have made such a positive impact on my personal life. I have spent the last 23 years engrained in the martial arts culture. It has certainly shaped the person I am today beyond measure. The most notable benefit is the relationships I have made with amazing people who I get to share the mat with every day!” Warrior Way 3100 Old Farm Ln Walled Lake, MI warriorway.com

35 YEARS OF CELEBRATING AUTOMOTIVE EXCELLENCE

24

AU TO C LU B | AU TO + M A RI NE

EyesOn DESIGN Initially, the idea was to have a car show in a small office parking lot as a fundraiser for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology in Grosse Pointe Park. Then the design vice-presidents at Chrysler, Ford and General Motors got involved. Now, more than three decades later, the event has grown into one of America’s top five car shows, according to USA Today, and “one of the best outdoor car events worldwide,” in the words of Car & Driver magazine. This year’s 35th annual EyesOn Design event resumes its traditional calendar date – Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19 – and will be held at its traditional site, the spacious grounds of the Ford House, overlooking Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Shores. Spread across the large lawn in front of the 60-room National Historic Landmark mansion, the event will showcase more than 150 of the best-looking vehicles of their eras in their classes. The theme for this year’s show is “Designed for Speed,” celebrating the beauty and design of racing cars through the decades. These range from early racers of the 1920s to Indianapolis 500 roadsters and classic NASCAR sedans, and from winning sports cars to drag and street racers. One category will display the evolution of the Ford GT, from its first version in 1963 through the 2017 production edition. Early

versions of the car are famed for winning the 24-hour Le Mans race in France four years in a row in the 1960s. Several Chevrolet Corvette racers that competed at Le Mans will also be shown, along with a one-of-a-kind Corvette, the first to sport a V8 engine in 1955. The theme for the show is captured in this year’s poster, an impressionistic rendering of a sleek blue 1964 Shelby Daytona Coupe. The car was designed by the legendary Peter Brock, who is this year’s Lifetime Design Achievement honoree. The show will display a group of Brockdesigned cars, including an exact replica of the poster car, the 1959 Corvette Stingray racer seen for the past two years in a Detroit Institute of Arts exhibit, a spectacular Triumph TR250KR racer, and others. The car show is the final event of the weekend’s activities, which include a Friday driving tour for enthusiasts on a winding route in southeastern Michigan and the Vision Honored event honoring Brock that evening at the M1 Concourse, a private test track and garage complex in Pontiac. Saturday, June 18 brings a design symposium at the GM Design Dome in Warren and an evening “meet-and-greet” with Brock and Corvette designers at the GM Heritage Center. Sunday also features an elegant Private Eyes brunch for designers, car owners, and enthusiasts.

The show honors its unique mission in another aspect – having a category of cars rated by visually-impaired judges wearing white gloves who select their winner by touch. The car show is 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Father’s Day. Show tickets are $35. Admission is free to active-duty military and kids under 12 with an adult. All other events are limited capacity and by reservation only. Visit eyesondesign.com for tickets or call 313.824.4710. The events are a fundraiser for the non-profit DIO, a part of Henry Ford Health’s Department of Ophthalmology.

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L

“I love you so much.” It’s one of Austin’s many remarkable and Instagrammable street murals but is also a love letter from locals and visitors alike who adore this “weird” and wonderful city in the South. The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!

Photography Nathan Fluellen

This month, our City Lifestyle family of travel enthusiasts are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Austin to introduce an exclusively curated guide to this lively destination paired with a GIVEAWAY* opportunity to win a 2-night trip for two, with round trip airfare from American Airlines! Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public.

Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. Austin’s slowcooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss. Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th f loor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu.
