The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is all around us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all. No matter what you celebrate, the year drawing to a close is a great time to look back on the past year and remember what is most important to you and your family. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer. We feature local businesses with services that can assist and inspire you, from a tempting meal to beautiful jewelry, or even help with last-minute shipping to get your gifts where they need to go. We also have places to find twinkling lights and holiday cheer, and recipes for fun kitchen crafts to do with little ones home from school—or even just for yourself. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy, and love. From his beginnings in the Los Angeles Jewelry District, Eddy Mirachian, better knows as PAVE, developed an interest in jewelry at a young age. Starting as a diamond setter over 30 years ago, he began designing unique pieces for several jewelry labels and private clients. In 1998, Eddy established his own company and began creating exclusive products for people throughout the fashion, music, entertainment, and sports industries. Today he can be found at his jewelry store, Pave Diamonds, located on Northwestern Highway in Southfield. Designing distinctive, bespoke jewelry pieces has always been a passion for Eddy. The creativity involved and the ability to make something that is beautiful and original excites him. Eddy finds inspiration in “the ability to create and design custom CONTINUED >

one-of-a-kind unique jewelry pieces for customers of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy.” Eddy’s love of creating doesn’t end at the jewelry bench, however. “As far back as I can remember I have always been building or designing,” he says. “Just recently I started a project restoring classic cars, which is my other passion.” At Pave Diamonds, says Eddy, there are none of the mass-market, cookie-cutter pieces you might find in other stores. “Pave Diamonds creates and manufactures all of its jewelry with no outsourcing. That way we can control the cost and quality and use customer input and feedback to create pieces they are going to enjoy for a lifetime,” he adds. “We are real jewelers,” notes Eddy proudly, “unlike other jewelry stores.” At Pave Diamonds, he continues, "we specialize in all custom jewelry, design, and diamond setting.” Pave’s selection includes items ranging from pendants and chains to rings, bracelets, and more. Besides his expertise, experience, and creativity, Eddy also strives for a warm, relaxed atmosphere in his store. He describes Pave Diamonds as a “friendly,

family atmosphere. If customers want to stop by and chat about jewelry or current events, we welcome that too.” Likewise, Eddy doesn’t like to pressure his customers, but is happy to share his interest and knowledge of diamonds and gold with those who stop in to visit. With the holidays coming, choosing a perfect gift can be difficult. Eddy believes his relaxed approach can help. “I like to have a conversation with a client to get to know them and their needs. According to that, I suggest different options,” he says. “I want customers to feel comfortable when they walk in, and that’s why I’m always ready to talk to them and get to know them. I believe in relationships more than transactions.” Speaking of relationships, Eddy also cherishes his with his family. “My wife and I have been married for 18 years,” says Eddy. “We have been blessed with two children that are teenagers now, and a four-yearold dog. I can’t imagine life without them.” Likewise, Eddy feels that after over 30 years in the jewelry business, the relationships with his clients have made them feel almost like a family to him as well.

festive homemade ornaments Bake Up Holiday Decorations with Simple Ingredients ARTICLE BY LEANN PARKER AND AMY NIEZUR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

LeAnn’s Snowflake Salt Dough Ornaments (makes about 12) Salt dough, or dough art as we refer to it in our family, is a simple yet beautiful way to adorn spaces around the holidays. Making salt dough ornaments is a holiday tradition that we have been doing since I was a kid in the ‘80s, but the process has been around even longer than that! Salt dough has made a comeback in recent years, and for good reason—it only requires three ingredients, and the festive end product will last for years to come. We still pull out the salt dough ornaments I made as a kid and place them on our tree each year. I love that old traditions can live throughout the decades as we find ways to reinvent them with current day trends. That is exactly what I did here with these lovely ornaments. I hope you follow along to make some yourself this holiday season. Supplies • rolling pin • cookie cutters • plastic or metal straw • cookie sheet • parchment paper Ingredients • 1 cup all-purpose flour • ½ cup salt • ½ cup water

• lettered stamps • acrylic paint and/or permanent markers • acrylic sealer • bakers’ twine

• 4 oz white acrylic paint (optional)

Instructions 1. Combine flour and salt. Add ¼ cup water and paint if desired to create a white dough. Stir to mix. If needed, slowly add more water until you reach a pizza dough consistency. Remove dough from the bowl and knead on a floured surface until all ingredients are fully incorporated. Add more flour if too sticky, add more water if too dry. 2. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough ¼ to ½ inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to create snowflake shapes. With straw, poke a hole at the top of each snowflake to allow a space to thread your twine after baking. 3. Place ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. Flip ornaments every 30 minutes for a faster bake.

4. Once cooled, add decorative touches with lettered stamps, acrylic paint, or permanent markers. Finally, spray one side of the ornament with acrylic sealer. Let dry, flip, and spray the other side. 5. Once dried completely, thread twine through the hole created before baking. Hang from your tree or add to your gift boxes as gift tags. For me, holidays mean the smell of cinnamon—I love it! I like this recipe because it is simple enough for children to make, and the fragrance is spicy and warm. Best of all, the cinnamon dough bakes at the same temperature and time as salt dough, so you can make a batch of each at the same time. Supplies • rolling pin • cookie cutters • plastic or metal straw • cookie sheet • parchment paper • twine or thin ribbon Ingredients • ¾ cup unsweetened applesauce • 2 bottles (each 2.37 oz) ground cinnamon Instructions 1. Combine applesauce and cinnamon. Mix well until a workable dough is formed. 2. To make ornaments, use a rolling pin to roll dough ¼ inch thick. Cut out desired shapes with cookie cutters. With straw, poke a hole at the top of each ornament for hanging. 3. Place ornaments on parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 hours until dry. 4. Thread twine or ribbon through holes and tie.

LYNN POMERLEAU SHARES SOLUTIONS AT THE UPS STORE

“While the line may be long, you will get the attention you need to handle your package or documents,” says Lynn Pomerleau, owner of the largest UPS Store in Michigan at 6311 Haggerty Rd in West Bloomfield. Lynn and her husband pride themselves on having a friendly atmosphere while providing services ranging from shipping and packaging to Amazon returns and 24-hour mailboxes with a street address instead of a post office box. “The new trend is businesses operating from home,” notes Lynn. At her store, customers can access computers, print, copy, or fax documents, and design and print marketing materials. Additionally, in January the store is adding a conference room for 10-12 people equipped with the latest technology for online meetings. Snacks or lunch can be catered in. Lynn and her husband decided to open their UPS store after considering ways to diversify their investments. “Fast food did not appeal to us,” says Lynn. “The best thing about The UPS Store franchise is all the wonderful people we have met. The customers have been amazing! They are so excited to have us open in their local area and love the new design that The UPS Store has created.” Outside of the store, Lynn and her husband of almost 30 years enjoy antique cars. “Our kids grew up going to car shows on the weekend,” she adds. Lynn also enjoys hiking, walking, and biking. "We love the holiday season because we get a chance to give back to the community in so many ways," says Lynn. Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
